    hmmm, probably flies high enough and is small and quiet enough to not be seen by troops with MANPADS, but screwed if there's radar and SAMs around. It'd be a hoot against pirates and sandal wearing badies. A truly stealth version would be an absolute nightmare for any enemy.

    The Reapers were starting to be tested with AIM9 Sidewinder missiles for air-to-air self defense. It should be tested with AIM120, AGM88 HARM, AIM260 missiles as well as all the SEAD and DEAD pods that the latest F-16s carry so that it can function fully in a contested air space. There's no reason it can't function like a top of the line manned ground attack fighter like the F-16.

    Personally, I think drones SHOULD have one or two missiles that can be fired backwards, in the event that they’re being chased by an enemy aircraft…. because that enemy aircraft has no flares at the front.

    • @christopherrobinson7541
      @christopherrobinson7541 3 месяца назад +1

      In order to fire a missile backwards the target must first be detected, then the drone has to lock-on the the target and then the missile has to acquire the target. This is difficult to do with a pusher propellor at the rear of the drone. This would require some sort of detection/tracking pod amounted under the wing, in addition to the missile to be fired backwards.

      It clearly isn't stealthy, particularly given its external ordnance. Drones likes this aren't particularly helpful in contested airspace, but this would have been perfect for lots of CAS in Afghanistan with a long loiter time and an effective weapons mix for "low risk" (to aircraft) targets - all without the cost (and risk) of a operating a more expensive, capable, manned aircraft.

      Old aircraft are often converted and used as targets, eg; QF4 which was the R/C version of the F4 Phantom.
      I was involved in the trails of the Skyflash missile (a UK upgrade to the Sparrow AIM7E). The missile does not have a warhead, but carries additional equipment in order to calculate the miss distance from the target. Unfortunately during the trials our missile was more of a hitile and we took out 4 QF4's. The USN were not pleased. Especially when we painted 4 kills on the side of our UK F4 that had fired the missile.

    You are dreaming. How much does one cost and how many can you produce in a month ? The cheap DJI drones easily converted to warfare , they can produce hundreds of thousands in a month , they can send swarms of tens of thousands in a single wave , that is the game changer. If you need a missile to shoot it down it then becomes very costly 100X , so in the end you run out of $. They have robo dogs , sharks , tanks , drones etc.

    Too expensive and too vulnerable to be cost-effective in peer-to-peer warfare. Against modern SAMs or even fighter jets these are just too costly of an asset to lose on the battlefield. For the $32 million cost of a single Mojave you can equip a swarm of relatively cheap single-purpose drones that together not only have a better chance to succeed in their mission but can survive it as well. Probably useful in asymmetric and air dominance scenario's only.

    Modern war in Ukraine shows that such "attacked" drones don't last long on the current battlefield.
    Ukraine lost their similar drones Bayraktar TB2 pretty fast.
    This could be the case somewhere in Afghanistan but the upcoming wars will be with Russia & China
