This actually looks really good. One of my only complaints with Slay the Spire is that, aesthetically, it’s... passable *at best,* so it’s nice to see a deck building roguelike with a lot more care put into its presentation.
They put a lot of care into the art for spire, I'm unsure what you're on about. Think you just stylistically dislike it or something. Personally prefer it to this game's shiny sheen and cartoon artstyle. This artstyle is 100% not "passable at best" though.
There are a lot of other roguelike deck builders that are really cool out there. Someone mentioned monster train but another one is Night of the full moon
Saw this game on the Nintendo channel recently, looked cool but probably wasn't gonna get it, but I'm glad RT is doing a playthrough because he may change my mind! (He was the reason I bought slay the spire which I now have 200+ hours in)
If you can get an upgrade for the town or something like that, that enables a card reward skip i believe this would make this game even better. At least from my perspective. But either way this game looks really cool! Can´t wait to play it when its released
I'm super excited for this game. This game is similiar to a game idea I have, but the way they implement the roguelite elements here is just so good. The charms are amazing.
I was in the mood for a new rougelike card game thing, and this /really/ caught my interest! Checked the demo out after this video and I'm so dang glad it runs well on switch. Excited for this to release in a couple days!
This game looks so adorable so far! All the little effects and sound cues are so satisfying. Ive never heard of the game before now, but I'll put it on the list!
I played this game at launch after seeing the Northernlion video and really enjoyed it, but stopped playing and shrugged it off after I beat it. Revisiting it recently, I can confidently say that this is a triumph of an indie game, and I don't say that lightly. All of its systems, interface, its depth vs its simplicity and the vibe is just perfect. The synergies are effortless and scale massively, but also feel earned and are never boring to obtain. And at the end, when your previous run becomes the next final boss - it's genius. I got the mobile version and every time I play it feels like I'm slowly making my way through a perfectly challenging sudoku.
This game seems so well polished! It's got an adorable clear art style, good base mechanics, and great detail on the small stuff like resistance not being complete immunity, card balance, etc. Definitely buying this when it comes out.
32:00 reading is not a strong suit of gamers, it seems, holy shit. The tooltip literally says reactions and not a single person i've found yet has caught on immediately, despite this being one of the most clear mechanics that it tells you but doesn't handhold you through.
would LOVE to see more of this game, it's really cute and looks super fun!! im usually not one for card games like this but i might just put this one on my wishlist!
This game looks soo good, I love how adorable and well made the art is. I love deckbuilders and can't wait to play this one when it comes out. Also love you RT, your videos always make me happy.
I played the demo a while back and enjoyed it, though was hoping for some more variety. With all the new cards and some changes it seems like it’s terrific, can’t wait to get it!
So I absolutely love this game so far, even more than your Hearthstone vids (which is surprising because your shenanigans in those are actually some of my favorites you’ve ever done) and I’m positively dying to see more of this on the channel. I do hope you keep playing this every once in awhile after launch ❤️❤️❤️
What a gorgeous game, I can't express how much I appreciate the art style INFORMING the game mechanics and visa versa. Those charms are a perfect example. They don't just "slot" or "attach". That would be representative of a mechanical art style at best, or a very aggressively lazy one that didnt mean anything and just visually represented game code interacting. Instead the charms kind jangle, and they tie up together when more than one is applied. That's what games are about. Giving a very firm but polite middle finger to EVERYTHING that isn't exactly what the dev's vision percieved. Looking just as unique as the human beings who concocted it
This video introduced me to Wildfrost and god I love this game! I am really looking forward to more updates to the game, especially more content as it holds a _warm_ place in my heart :D
This video inspired me to try Wildfrost and honestly I’m glad it did. It’s pretty fun. I just won on my 3rd run after getting a broken combo of a multi attacking hero (whose cooldown I reduced with a sun charm and damage I raised with another charm), a robot with a hammer that attacks every time an ally in the row attacks (which I gave a charm to that caused it to attack twice instead), and a Mobile Campfire. They mowed through everything in their path. Krunker especially got annihilated. Died after like 2 attack cycles, including its second phase. Yuki was also there, and while she wasn’t the main win condition, she still helped a lot. I also had Kernel with 20 HP, so he could tank a lot and give tons of Shell. (I really want to call Shell “Block” because of Slay the Spire but Block is a different effect in this more akin to STS’s Buffer.)
This looks like a lot of fun! I've been following one of the artists that worked on this game for a long time and I'm glad that it looks as fun as the art is nice. Thanks for the vid, I'll probably be picking this up now!
This game looks like its REALLY well balanced. The power scaling with combos is really hard to account for but it seems like the bosses are tuned for being this overpowered. It both feels like it would be a challenge while also feeling like it's easy, which is an indication of a good roguelike card game system. Bravo. I will definitely be picking this up.
Fun fact - Ice Dice has since been changed and now always hits one ally and one enemy, and with the new way enemy waves work it's not too difficult to avoid hitting an enemy with it, ;)
I loved watching you play this game so much!! The game's art is so adorable, but I loved watching you try out weird strategies (like soulbound) but somehow get to crazy good strategies! I'd absolutely watch more playthroughs of wildfrost if you feel like it
I really like strategy deckbuilders but I think this one falls into a trap it shouldn't that will scare new players away of effects on death that aren't listed anywhere. If my strategy is to go all in to nuke a boss and then that boss comes back to life or splits into two new bosses with 0 warning, that isn't good design and will end a run.
I KNEW ABOUT CHARMS STACKING!!!!!! I played the HELL out of the demo of this game because it just HOOKED me so well, and I remember putting multiple charms on the same card! I think the first time I did it I was disappointed because I regretted having the first charm, so it didn't go so well, hahaha. But yeah, I actually remembered this specifically because I remember how the charms hang as a group. It's the littlest design details (like Yuki's snowball!) that can be so memorable! I LOVE this game!
Soulbound is the kind of card that will instantly kill your hero if he is the random soulbound target. Maybe if it's paired with the dice your hero can block it? Other than that, you can't win. I feel like this was an oversight. Perhaps a condition that prevents the hero from being affected. Then again, the ability is just overpowered against bosses, so maybe the idea is you use it as an act of desparation, when you have no other option, because then you have a chance to come out okay.
this game feels like it has a lot of potential that's lost by a lot of design desicions which boil down to "be lucky or die". I get randomization is a way to keep things fresh, and the card game format sort of requires some amount by nature, but stuff like "this card, best case scenario, has a 1 in 6 chance of dooming your ENTIRE RUN by applying soulbound to the leader" and "this enemy makes it so you cannot control who your allies attack at all, and it's on the field with a combination of priority targets and things you really don't want to hit" isn't fresh or interesting, it's just frustrating
a lot of the steam reviews say the game is too hard, but i think this is the actual problem they're trying to call to attention. i'm not a card game expert, but to me, slay the spire feels like it works because it has fewer enemy effects and a more standard battle system, so it feels as though there is a lower chance of being screwed over by an effect you never got a card to counter- and hence, less rng. that's just how it feels to me, though.
From what I can see, this game is all about deck dynamics, combo stacking, and how well your attention span is. Especially concerning the sacrifice summoner deck because it can be extremely powerful in the right hands but you need exceptional planning to pull that off correctly.
Thanks again to Will (the game dev) for giving me early access to Wildfrost! I'm not sponsored in any capacity, but I want to support the game regardless as it's proper fun, and Will is a sound lad.
