I know Dan was largely being facetious about Ape Escape, but as a massive nerd I feel the need to point out that there's actually a really sweet reason for it being so prominent: It was one of Japan Studio's first flagship titles. Japan Studio was an in-house publishing arm that used to make a bunch of Playstation exclusives, often as a collaboration with other studios, but they were shut down in the ps4 days to help fund Concord (lol. lmao even). Team Asobi is what's left of what was formerly Japan Studio, so it makes sense that they would christen their first major game release with a stealth remake of their old studio's first big game. There are also a LOT of Japan Studio references in Astro Bot because of this. Some other Japan Studio cameos are Motor Toon Grand Prix, Parappa the Rapper, Wild Arms, Everybody's Golf, Devil Dice, Legend of Dragoon, Vib-Ribbon, Boku no Natsuyasumi, Dark Cloud, Mister Mosquito, Mad Maestro, Ico, Arc the Lad, Shadow of the Colossus, LocoRoco, Everybody's Tennis, Rogue Galaxy, Patapon, Demon Souls, Tokyo Jungle, Gravity Rush, Puppeteer, Knack, Bloodborne, The Last Guardian, Death Stranding, and Ghost of Tsushima. As someone who has been a hardcore Japan Studio fan since the ps3 days, the plot of Astro Bot being "the ps5 is falling apart and the only way to put it back together is by freeing a bunch of old playstation ips from prison" feels a bit more passive aggressive than I think most people realize. If sony hadn't shuttered Japan Studio, "the ps5 has no games" probably wouldn't have become a meme in the first place. I'm not even sure sony themselves realized how many games they were making. That being said though, I'm really glad the studio is finally getting their dues after all these years! Thanks to everyone who played Astro Bot for keeping the faith. If you want more astro bot but can't wait for a sequel, I'd highly recommend playing puppeteer for the ps3. It's a 2.5D platformer instead of a 3D one, but you can feel the bones of a lot of what astro bot would become in it. It's the closest thing you're gonna get to a spiritual prequel without playing the VR game.
so basically, its a sweet-n-fun, tongue-in-cheek way of telling the execs "hey maybe the PS5 would have more games if we didn't shutter the studios tehee >:D"
@@liz_violet a little bit. I’ve seen a lot of more cynical people call astro bot an ip graveyard, but I think it’s more accurate to call it a paramedic performing cpr. It strikes me as a strongly worded essay in video game form that exists to ask “can we please go back to what we were doing?” more than anything else
As someone who absolutely adores Puppeteer, I totally second the recommendation of it! It’s a fantastic and beautiful game with such an enjoyable premise that really deserves more love (Probably won’t happen, but i'd love to see Dan stream the game in full one day). This entire comment was really informative and cool to read, and I hope Team Asobi is able to get any sort of peace of mind or compensation for what happened with Japan Studio
If I remember right, wasn't Ape Escape also the first ps1 title to actually *require* the use of the analog sticks? As in, they'd been usable in games before then but entirely optional as alt movement controls or whatever, then Ape Escape came along and made them necessary in order to play the game. The game was genuinely instrumental in changing the way we played video games, it definitely deserves that prominence.
I noticed a bunch of people pressuring him to play a bunch of playstation games and felt kinda bad about it so I just wanted to say @RTGame on the off chance you’re reading this it wasn’t a suggestion that you specifically have to stream any of these games. I just happened to know a lot about the studio’s history and thought I’d say my piece about it. Sorry in advance if it came across that way.
i really hope this makes people realise that a company isn't just a singular person lmao. all of the people who developed this game have nothing in common with the higher ups at sony, and it's really annoying how people will just group an entire company into one entity they do the same for nintendo, and act like the game developers are just as bad as the legal team
I like how he makes the "John [insert game here]" joke on so many characters, except for Kratos when it was actually canonically confirmed that his full name is "John Kratos"

Funfact if you find 4 secret bots in Astro’s Playroom (a free game pre installed onto your PS5 that was mostly just supposed to be a tech demo to show off what the controller can do) they’ll join you in Astro Bot brining the total bots up to 304 also I love how they mostly used the PS5’s graphical potential to allow there to be like 500 random objects on the ground after beating a miniboss or something
There's something incredibly joyful in seeing just a bunch of physics stuff flying around instead of another attempt at escalating hyper realism that I'm so used to seeing from big budget studios.
For some reason I am completely enamored with the “very crass but extremely helpful uncle who pretends like he’s making everything worse while he fixes up your favorite toys” character
I was one of them. It might sound a bit arrogant (so I apologise if I gave off that impression), but I tried my best to keep him up to date. Hope that helped anyone curious about checking out these IPs.
There's probably a Sony Rep whose job is just to watch this video lol, like imagine you sign into your business meeting and your boss just goes "today I need you to watch a video by a popular youtuber and twitch streamer to find things to use for marketing of the game."
I imagine it's less about "find things to use for marketing" and more "we should actually look at this thing we're releasing/promoting." It's like having someone test coffee mugs at the factory to make sure they don't explode in the microwave because that's relatively easy to check.
Joker being on top of the cassino in the same pose as he was in p5 makes me KNOW that some other bots locations are references and I don't know what they are
I know the Fall Guy was in the location it's in because it's seems really similar to the theme of legacy season 6, the same season Fall Guys added an Astro Bot costume as a collab
Genuinely such a great game even without the nostalgia bait. Sure I am not immune to any media that has Klonoa in it but everything in this is simply charming. It feels... Like a game. Idk how else to explain it. It feels like a game. Most times, that's all you need really

I watched all 12+ hours of the recordings of the streams. Nothing has EVER captivated my attention like that AND made me come back for the condensed version before. Astro Bot is such a delightful game, and I loved watching RT specifically play it

I don't know a better complement to a game dev then "screw the required ad time im playing the whole thing" Also the fact rt doesn't know most of the cameos and still loves it just proves how good the game is. People could argue "nostalgia" but that would only work if you actually knew the references. This is just straight up a good game first and a nostalgia celebration second. Sony better not pull a microsoft and close down the studio (tango gameworks)
This entire time, I thought he was shouting "FUTURE" like that episode of Spongebob where Squidward has a mental breakdown after realizing he is indeed trapped in the future (where everything is chrome). In my defense, half the time it was near/related to something "futuristic" like holographic platforms in the void...putting aside the fact that's the aesthetic of the entire game.
It is genuinely so refreshing to see a game that's *essentially* a PlayStation ad be this polished and clearly have a lot of love and effort put into it. Love seeing that
In fairness, what are they advertising? The PS5? You already have one if you're playing the game, and most of the series shown in the game haven't had a new entry in years and many can't even be played on modern hardware.
@@stevenbobbybills First of all, they sponsored a bunch of youtubers and streamers to play it, so clearly that was meant to bring more people in and you can essentially call every character appearance an ad, since players might want to play the games that showed up and in turn spend more money AND time on PlayStation property. Hell, it made me want to revisit/start some of the games that made an appearance. For a known brand, exposure and nostalgia are definitely useful tools. Most of those games don't need to be playable on modern tech, if it just makes you Feel nice and warm to have your obscure childhood game be a part of this brand's history. That warmth is associated with PlayStation. They essentially highlight how much of your life might've been made better by their products. Also there is literally a brand logo on screen for most of the time. It's kind of the key component. Don't act like that wouldn't be seen as extremely tacky in many cases. If it were in a movie for example, people would riot. In Astro Bot's case, making PS products the essential part of the story comes off as cute and creative (especially since the bots have been introduced years ago and it's so fun to finally see something done with them), rather than just a brand placement. Someone else mentioned it in the comments but Astro Bot Feels Like A Game, which i think is definitely its defining feature and the reason why all this works so well.
@@stevenbobbybills They're advertising their own brand rather than anything specific. "Advert" is the wrong term really, it's more of a less-defined "marketing exercise" to reinforce existing positive associations.
@@vegladex if you have a PS5 and purchase Astro Bot, chances are you're already invested in the PlayStation brand to some extent, right? It feels a little weird to have this one called out for being a PlayStation brand advert (when most of the depicted brands haven't had a game on the PS5 either) when I never see this criticism go to Nintendo for integrating their other brands into their games as guest characters or cosmetics.
@@stevenbobbybills "Invested to some extent", not all the way. And perhaps people's brand loyalty has been slipping lately. In fact, calling back to games that people loved but can't play on this generation would refresh their appreciation of a franchise that they can't just experience again at the moment. It's not trying to get them to buy these games, it's trying to get people who played these games to remember how much they liked them, and to associate those positive memories with this new generation too. And this game has a whole lot more than "guest characters and cosmetics", the ultimate goal of rebuilding your "spaceship" is themed HEAVILY on the Playstation brand, and many, many elements of the game follow suit. There are entire bonus levels based upon the iconic aesthetics of EACH of Playstation's controller buttons! It has little identity of its own, with even the look of the bots themselves based upon PS5 branding style, crossed with Sackboy of course, a beloved PS mascot. To summarise: no, the game is not trying to sell anything to anybody new; it's trying to convince established fans of any of their IPs that continuing to support Sony is the right thing to do.
Oh my god they actually made a special level for Loco Roco. I used to play Loco Roco all the time when I was a kid. That and Patapon was my jam on the PSP. Didn’t expect them to still remember the franchise. Brought back so many memories

Vinny Vinesauce called this game "super Mario galaxy 3" and I have to agree. Aside from Bloodborne and FF7 remake, this is the most compelling reason I've seen to get a Playstation.
But this is actually so true. I am a Nintendo guy through-and-through, but for the first time,in my life ASTRO BOT made me consider "wait, am I missing something by not having a Playstation?"
Hmm, let's see. You spend the entire game attempting to repair a mothership. The world map is Galaxy 1. Individual levels are referred to as "Planets". The hub area gets more lively as you explore more of the galaxy. Most levels are based around a specific power-up you find in them, and get used again in later levels. There are shorter one-off levels with nothing but a small challenge. Octo-pump is the Blimp Fruit. Armadillo is (shamelessly) the Star Ball. Some levels have mini-bosses at the end of them, usually a hostile native to the planet. There are hidden ends to some levels. The Lightbulb is essentially the Glow Fruit. Elephant Pack is literally just the Cloud Flower (though admittedly expanded upon with using Honey and Ice). Walking across lava after cooling it down is akin to how you could skate over lava with the Ice Flower. Dealing damage to Lady Venomara by spin attacking the crystal rings is the exact same as how you deal damage to Gobblegut. Might be a stretch on this one, but Iron Ball Suit is kinda like the Rock Mushroom. Also a stretch, but the Penguin is similar to holding a shell underwater. And there are motion controls. A whole lot of motion controls. So, yeah, pretty much Super Mario Galaxy 3.
@@TheFirstCurse1 If you already own a PC like I do, then there are exactly 3 reasons: Astro Bot, Spider Man 2, and Bloodborne.

I absolutely loved the little, “he did in fact replay the level and get all the bots” text! No bots left behind!

There are a lot more reasons to get a PlayStation than "just Astro Bot, Bloodborne, and the Final Fantasy 7 Remake".

Oh Because This Would Be The First Time A Large RUclipsr Failed To Disclose Things?
You Have The Support Of Other Fans, But You Are Quite Gullible If You Think Anyone Is Immune To Bad Actions.
@EverTheFractal Maybe, Doesn't Change The Odd Coincidence Though.
I remember playing the demo for Astro Bot: Rescue Mission when I got my PSVR during lockdown, and it was honestly a joy, so it’s nice to see RT enjoyed this new game
sorry babe i have to cancel our date today. RTGame uploaded a 2 hour video
A real partner would come and watch it with you
gotta love how sony said they don't have enough IPs and astro bot breaks into the room with a game LITERALLY FILLED with IPs
I hadn’t smiled so much for the duration of a game’s scene as that last charge to battle in a long, long time.
Also I have to defend Ape Escape and Locoroco nepotism, Team Asobi are remnants from Japan Studio, they are allowed to have two worlds and ten apes! My siblings and I fondly remember seeing Locoroco on a PSP display when we visited America, and Kulche’s amazing theme… such a fond memory. Time to loop that song again after watching this!
Little did he know at 0:25
39:48 "BOI" lyric drops
1:39:26 that is Sol Badguy from Guilty Gear
PS5 HAS ONE GAME!
Same is true for Xbox, no real exclusives.
I'd much rather consoles have no exclusives than lots of them. More people being able to play games is always a good thing.
@@tortoiseoflegends4466 fair. I just had to make the joke
@@tortoiseoflegends4466 Completely agree games should be enjoyed by everyone not just on one console or another!
What about spider man 2?
This game looks so good but I can’t buy a PS5, that’s a problem with exclusive games.
This game feels like a loveletter
"last spotted in skylands" i can die happy now
There's going to be a video at some point in the future where Dan goes "Oh, I know that guy! He was in Astro Bot!"
RT, the Kirby gacha already took all our college and uni funds! You can't do this to us again!!!
1:47:57 I got an ad right at this second, which was immensely funny because it just looked like a cutaway from a gruesome death
this is what the Little Big Planet reboot could have been.
Reminder that LBP is over, and neither it nor Dreams will get PC ports, even though it would revitalize both communities and Sony has been way better with releasing their console exclusives on PC lately
Notice how the PS5 section of the spaceship fight at the end doesn't have any bots on it.
2:25 Yes, it can. Mine can drift on its own now, too
Me coming here after Astrobot won GOTY 2024
The PS5 finally got a good exclusive game! There’s actually a reason to buy it now!
hell yeah lets check the price of the new- OH MY GOD! AHHHHHHH
i mean gt- well the xbox is also there
I'm so confused why they keep porting every single exclusive to pc, and pretty quickly too. I'm pretty sure this one'll stay exclusive, but the rest fucking didn't, so who knows.
The Linkin Park song has finally found an answer.
1:20:36 I don't know if you'll ever see this, RT but that bot from the squares level that was 1/3 of your deaths at that point was from Dark Cloud 2. One of my favorite games growing up. Today, I really needed to see that. Thanks for your suffering, funny man!
