I can’t imagine putting in so much effort to make such a gorgeous and fun game and getting 57% positive reviews because people think it’s too difficult.
thats how it is these days. 1990: "dude come over by the weekend, to check out this insanely difficult nintendo game I just got. lets see who beats it quicker" 2023: "what, did i just lose in this game? i want my money back!!!"
I think it's still missing QOL things that a lot of games in the same field (tiny dev team, lots of brainwork, rng) have covered already. I'm thinkin Slice and Dice on this field i guess
Thing is, there needs to be a balance. It's all fine and dandy that there are some people who are having an easier time of it than others, whether that be because they have experience in the genre, or are more suited to the gameplay, but part a game needs to be able to attract new players as well. I think the game is great, but I do think it needs some balance adjustments. NL only really got to show off Act 1 in the video so it's hard to really show people what the complaints are about. Act 1 is actually fairly standard in terms of difficulty, its the jump to Act 2 that's turning people away. I think the main issue is pacing and a lack of agency in Act 1. Act 1 has only a few choices you can make before the boss and then you're immediately chucked into act 2 where the fights are a LOT more brutal and require much more mastery of the mechanics then Act 1. It's very easy to beat the act 1 boss only to immediately get bodied by the first fight in act 2. I think this is a result of the devs wanting the game to be difficult enough to warrant experienced players to want to keep playing it, but it means newer players get frustrated banging their head against the wall, especially because there are fights that counter certain decks HARD. While I don't think its impossible, and the Act 2 fights are more of a skill check then being unbalanced, I think this game could have really benefited from a similar system to ascension in StS. That way you have something for players to work towards, but you can give them a more gradual progression of difficulty rather then slamming them in the face with a sudden difficulty spike.
The game is gorgeous and a whole lot of fun, it actually saddens me to see the reviews be so negative.. Although I do agree with SOME of the sentiment expressed in the negative reviews, holistically I think the game is a solid 8/10. Hopefully after the next update we'll see some of the negative reviews flip 🙃
ive beaten the game (fr) in 24 hours and friends please give it a shot, the reviews are so wrong the game is so fun even losing is fun it may be a deckbuilder but i honestly think the game is more like trying to tune a rube goldberg machine in your favour its so so much fun
I think the problem is people thought its slay the spire like and game is nothing like sls. It's a card game but its like comparing fire emblem to final fantasy. Both are turn based but take different thinking to be good at.
Jupp! Took me a day to beat the final boss, have yet to beat myself though, was a pretty op build. It requires your attention, and thinking a few steps ahead, but it's not unbalanced or too hard. Sure some things can always be tweaked, but the core game is phenomenal imo.
One of my favorite deck builders for sure. Tried it after seeing NL play it. Game is tough at first but once you get mechanics down it's not too bad. Balance isn't an issue. Really a shame the reviews are negative, it's an excellent game. Very fun and unique mechanics, fantastic art, music and sound are well done. I'm frankly shocked at the reviews.
the game becomes gradually more fun after youve unlocked a bunch of shit, and i think whats actually kinda wack are the leaders, which are less interesting than most random allies and how some stuff is locked behind unrelated stuff (get 40 coins from gobling unlocks kill 10 enemies through shrooms) if it were 40 coins unlocks 100 coins id get it, but having already killed enemies through shrooms and only 5 runs later the game is offering a reward for me to do it is kind of a bummer
Got 3 clears thus far in 8 hours, it's reallllly not that hard. Requires a lot of thought but that's why it's so good- yet to have a fight where I didn't screw up from my own mistake or realising my deck wasn't good enough. That's what makes a good deckbuikder....I encourage those who enjoy it to vote positive on steam to help bump it up to at least 80% positive- it deserves it
I have been playing myself for the past couple days nearly nonstop. I love how cute this game is and the puzzle element of each battle! I ended up beating it once after many many attempts but I got better and better! Similar to my experience with Isaac back in the day! Looking forward to playing more today
"Move you in front, so you can survive" *End card pops up* Gotta love when that happens. But yeah, people are exaggerating about the difficulty. I don't often make to the end in roguelikes, but I've beaten two runs of this game within a few days of playing it. You really shouldn't play the coward's way this early on. Right now is when you should be experimenting, figuring out the mechanics as much as possible. That was my approach, too. Whenever I didn't know how something would work, I'd try it out, even if it would cost me the run.
The game is reasonably challenging and slightly unbalanced, but it has the much bigger issue of not giving the player any agency at all. Compared to StS, there's no pathing, no relics, no card upgrades, no events and overall much less ability to improve your deck before the final boss. Very little was added to replace these mechanics, and combined with a lack of ascensions, it's a pretty underwhelming package gameplay-wise. That said, i agree it should be a "very positive" on Steam, given that similar games have that rating.
