the only problem is that if you're going with a shiv build you are guaranteed to encounter the time eater as the 3rd boss who will end your run because he's the worst boss in the game

@@ketra1504 well, you can see at the start of act 3 what boss you get, so you have the entire act to grab poison, accuracy, or any high impact or scaling card.
Imagine being the guys at 20:21 though, you go to rob a guy, he becomes blurry and you and your friends are just filled with knifes.

The Silent is actually a girl surprisingly enough! This isn't quite apparent in her base design but (if you complete a particular achievement in the game), you unlock her beta card art and let's just say that fact becomes a lot more apparent in some of the beta art designs. (A lot of the other Beta arts in the game are still amazing though speaking as an absolute fan of this game)

rt's character is the equivalent of that scene in movies where they ask the main characters to remove their weapons and they just keep pulling daggers out of increasingly elaborate places

For those who weren't there for the stream, I think you should know that chat freaked out every time RT played the Survivor card, and they said things like "Nice!" and "Sick flip!" every time he played Backflip.

Spoiler alert, but even despite Dan's best efforts and ridiculous amounts of knives, The Spire couldn't be Slain, so feel free to sleep in peace, knowing that this landmark is still standing.

If RT does end up streaming Slay the Spire again, this would be a great reference. I imagine that specifically against Time Eater, RT throws out all of his options at Time Eater and his turn automatically ends when the boss is at 1HP. Then RT dies to Time Eater.
That just seems like such a perfect moment to quit and say "Wanna play Mario Sunshine?"
Some tips for those who may want to start playing this lovely game:
- You can enable Fast Mode in the settings, which speeds up the animations pretty dramatically.
- There's a total of 9 bosses, 3 in each act, and all of them perform better or worse against certain strategies. Experimentation is key!
- After beating the game as any character with certain stipulations that I won't spoil, you can unlock the beta art for that character's cards! The newest character even includes a bunch of art that was submitted by the community!
- The game has pretty extensive modding support. In particular, there's a massive expansion mod called "Downfall" that's a full rework of the game to play as the bosses and to essentially travel the Spire in reverse, fighting the playable characters as floor bosses.
- Slay the Spire has an Ascension system, where every time you beat the game, it will start to add stacking difficulty modifiers to your run. You're not obligated to go all the way up, but the Ascensions cap at Lvl. 20 for each character.

I think it's key to note some of the beta art is hilarious, especially on the Watcher.
With that deck I was 100% certain he would run into the Time Eater there. You *always* run into the time eater with shiv decks, it's the law...
I mean, that deck was broken enough to beat ascension 0 time eater for sure.

with all those powers i half expected the awakened one to do better...it almost felt like it should have considering he basically ignored the ritualists and let them stack str.

Not only is RT RIDICULOUSLY good at this game, but it’s nice to see a content creator take a brief moment to explain the game he’s playing. I’ve never seen gameplay of this game band it was nice to be able to have a head start on understanding what was going on thanks to RT’s little explanation

He's doing a fantastic job of explaining the game as he goes along, but to call him 'RIDICULOUSLY good' would be hyperbole in the extreme. He's not capitalizing on his Kunai bonus dexterity in the same turns he gets them (he casts his Blocks before he attacks, which is straight up wrong with Kunai) and he isn't prioritizing his offense properly on Ironclad to utilise his heal (visible in him messing up the first fight.) Basically the only reason he wins on Silent is that every single relic he received was god-tier, with the sole exception of Pantograph, which is still really good. His deck also likely loses straight up to Time Eater, one of 3 possible permutations of the last boss, which punishes low-value card spam decks.
For a player who is completely new, this would be good progress, but RT explained on his stream that he HAS played this game on his Switch before, making it impressive the other way around that he hasn't grasped many of these basics intuitively despite playing (presumably) 3-4 runs already before this stream.
That said, RT IS an absolute god at being able to keep his content hilarious even in an otherwise fast-paced, ostensibly 'not much to be said game'.

Even when this game was only just out, having a deck just built around shivs was fun as hell, glad to see it's only become better
tossing shivs and in general using loads of cards in one turn feels very satisfactory
Super fun until you get Time Eater as your third boss and he just tells you no. I was hoping that's who he'd get and have his deck just hard countered to oblivion.

Dan's second character would be INFURIATING to fight. He just keeps getting faster, dodging every, SINGLE strike, doing piddly-diddly with his own strikes, but throwing SO MANY of them with ever-increasing poison and getting so much more slippery every time he does that you you just keep dying and he JUST. WON'T. GET. HIT!

RT's deck really ended up being the like the doom guy. Zooming about at 60 miles an hour while flinging so many shivs at his enemies every turn he might as well be firing them out of a shotgun.

RT really went through the STS beginner pack, playing Ironclad just to keep dying then switching to silent for a god run
I'm pretty sure that's by design. The ironclad has lots of hp (more from burning blood) and high damage to pretty consistently get through act 1, but the synergies for him are actually not easy to see initially. On the other hand, silent has many cards that directly say "shiv" or "poison", making it VERY easy to find a strong synergy and get a good run. So a new player will have the ironclad's hp to brute force through the game while learning it, while actually learning the hook of the game with the silent.

@@ayaanmohammad6645 Oh, once you've beat act 3 once you unlock a fourth act, with another boss. That boss has an ability which deals damage to you every time you play a card.
RT can kind of nullify that with his defense whenever he plays a card, but the two kind of cancel eachother out and the boss itself deals heaps of damage on top of that effect.
I’m impressed with how quickly RT managed to get a win, that Silent deck was pretty busted.
I’ve found like every synergy for The Silent is broken as all fuck, leading to literally every run I’ve played with her being a victory (although I haven’t really played the game a lot tbf), def my favourite character for how absurdly powerful she is
Shield shiv+ envenom is hilarious, especially with snecko skull.
The real final boss is a pretty decent counter to it though, with its ability to deal damage every time you play a card.
@@tortoiseoflegends4466 not with afterimage, especially 2 and kunai or the fan. As even one afterimage offsets the damage from that for a few turns. The build rt had does it effectively permanently, especially when using the shield cards last to make more use of the kunai.
@@generalgarchomp333 on A20 you'd need 3 after images to block the damage for the whole fight, since the heart starts at beat of death 2 (beat of death being the buff the heart has that damages you) and on one of its buff turns it goes up to 3
The thing about the silent is that she has a shit starter deck. The most commonly recognized op character is actually the watcher with someone getting a 80% winrate with her on the highest difficulty (A20 heart)

Man, I've been playing this game in fast mode so long, I've forgotten what it's like without that option on.
But yeah, this game allows you to do some truly silly things, which is why I love it so much. My personal favorite would probably be the Ironclad combo of Corruption (skills cost 0 and exhaust) and the Dead Branch (when a card is exhausted, generate a random card). It results in a very "RANDOM BULLSHIT, GO!" sort of run.
i fucking hate dead branch so much every time i don't want it i get it that stupid piece of wood is the bane of my existence this is nothing against you i just hate that fucking branch
thats such a fun combo. One time i put it a corruption in the wall grabbed it as the silent with the dead branch and had silent shiv shenanigans
I like the battle with “The Champ” the most because I just imagine RT going and running up to this hulking Knight in nearly unbreakable armor with a dagger in hand, and then repeatedly trying to shive him in the chest only to have the blade break off. And then he just grabs another knife from his Resident Evil 4 Merchant cloak of wares to start going at him again.
I was really hoping for RT to just get punished by Time Wizard. Would've been the funniest thing to just get the hard counter to Shivs.
I feel like with how much block RT could gain, especially with scaling dexterity, it would have been fine as long as he played his cards right

@@actone4822 yeah, ascension 0 and ascension 20 are 2 entirely different games, I’m curious if RT will try and climb the ascensions, would be interesting to see him get better

Yeah it's super easy to kill yourself with the watcher because you thought you had lethal when you didn't.
If Dan managed to get the Silent to work, then hot damn is he gonna have a time and a half with the Defect. Had a run with the dude where his turn almost effectively never ended thanks to a bunch of Plasma cards and being able to draw more cards.

Man got an act 1 thread and needle - barricade deck and then a kunai - after image - blade dance deck on his first two games. Talk about a wild beginner's experience.
I hope he keeps playing and masters it, there are loads of mods for it and I wouldn't be surprised if there was an RT mod for it.
That being said I'm tempted to try and make one using his sound clips and references for items and cards.

hearing rt get excited over the things ive seen a million times made my day. i have 400 hours in this game and hearing him enjoy it for the first time takes me back. thankyou

The RT ninja run shows how well the block-heavy first runs *could* have worked, if he'd actually focused on block and not constantly bombed every chance he got it.
ive been playing this game for a few months now and im so sad that rt can just instantly win after like 5 tries.
I think his advanced pokemon expertise helps him in this type of strategy game
To be fair, he got pretty lucky with the multiple early after images, the hidden blade, and the kunai at the start (plus he got imo one of the easier 3rd floor bosses, the donut pair (without corpse explosion) and the time slug are a bit trickier to combo). But that luck is also a big part of the fun, since the combos are so satisfying, but I'd also be interested in seeing him try the ascensions though. Since beating the heart is the real challenge.

For boss relics, extra energy is always best, EXCEPT for ectoplasm, which stops you from gaining gold, and Runic dome, which stops you from seeing enemy intents.
-Busted crown might be bad for the first boss because from now on all card reward choices are reduced by 2 but once you got your deck mostly built it's free energy.
-Fusion hammer stops you from upgrading at campfires, which is definetely bad early on, but if you upgrade most of your core deck and get it at the end of act 2 it's no big deal. You may need to rest at act 3 anyways, and you might have gotten other relcs that give you other interactions with the campfire to compensate for that. Also there's the eggs.
-Cofee Dripper stops you from resting, but you can compensate for that by using your extra energy for defense.
-Cursed key is free enrgy and a visit to the shop every chest to remove the curse, no big deal.
-Philosopher stone makes enemies stronger, but again, you can compensate yith the extra energy.
-Sozu stops you from getting potions, which are an unreliable part of the run, to give you a reliable extra energy.
I just bought this game yesterday after watching the vod. I figured it’d be a great game to play when I’m at uni and need a break. Also, Dan your explanation of the game’s mechanics was wonderful :)
You should try the Downfall mod, too.....once you understand the base game. It gets, complicated.... It's fun, though.

If you liked this game, I recommend checking out Backpack Hero. It's very similiar to Slay The Spire, but instead of cards, you need to manage your inventory by placing the right items next to each other. It's a bit hard to explain, but the demo was really fun, and the actual game releases in Early Access this August!

Already know this is going to be one of those videos that I keep coming back to because it's unreasonably entertaining and feels way longer than it actually is
I like how under normal circumstances rt played really badly as well because he done block before the kunai buffs

That first build was the most entertaining for me personally
The idea of just being an impenetrable wall that occasionally hits back and throws bombs is so funny to me
The silent was my first character that I slew the spire with! I was using a terrifyingly similar deck just stacked with carry-over block, energy cards like outmaneuver, and then just hella poison lmao, I also had the card that deals 10 damage then another 10 if they’re poisoned and I got like 150 or so poison stacked onto the final boss. It was an incredible experience but now I’m trying with the other characters and struggling without my poison :’(
I teared up when he said "I am the slay the spire" truly an inspiring moment

Slay the Spire is great because it shows you what's gonna happen and I still trip over myself. Peak "the risk I took was calculated, but...."

I was just playing slay the spire fr the first time in about 3 months and immediately after I looked in my recommended and Dan was playing this. I am now the main character
I’m so glad RT is playing this game, it’s genuinely one of my favourites
"hey man, we heard you like knives, so we put knives in your knives, and gave you more knives, which are holding knifes with knives inside THEM as well"

I can't believe I just watched RT play a dex build. Truly, Dublin Spire brings out the worst in people.
2:19 drop kick is one of the most broken cards for that character. Get 2 of them and draw your entire deck into your hand through some means. Then you can infinite combo.
Yeah, kind of same to the Ironclad using corruption and barricade/keep the armour -15 artifact. You would think that eventually you'll run out of cards but they just keep coming. Also invulnerable is a good add, 30/40 armour with no cost. I don't remember the highest I got with that run but I think I did have over 200 at one point
Kunai & Shuriken + After Image + Shivs + Accuracy + Wrist Blade + Blur + Cheap Block + Finisher is a super strong combo
I am going to scream I am so happy that rt is posting a slay the spire video because this is legitimately one of my favorite games of the past decade. It is such fun to watch someone play
Shives was one of the best builds in the game. And then they buffed it.
It really wasn't. Certainly not on the hardest difficulty at least.
Put simply, Shivs get hard countered by Time Eater. And on the highest difficulty, in addition to an obscene number of other ways the game gets more difficult, *the chance you encounter Time Eater is doubled, to 2/3 of all runs.* So it's nowhere near as good in that context.

Watching him play card based roguelikes like this, it makes me wonder of he's ever tried Dicey Dungeons! It's a super fun game where all of your actions and how you use your equipment are dictated by the roll of some dice! It's one I highly recommend!
