  • Thursday, June 27, 2024: "Summer-summer-summerTIME!" I couldn't wait to return to my old stomping grounds today: the Chinatown district. Mott Street, off Worth Street, was my starting point for a mid-afternoon stroll, a search for bamboo hair sticks, and the purchase of savory baked buns (for a lunch snack) at hidden gem Mei Lai Wah.
Priced at only $1.85 each, the baked roast pork buns from Mei Lai Wah (Bayard Street, off Mott Street) are filled generously with BBQ pork as they were back in the day, when I'd buy a few in the morning and have one left to munch on after class at Sandra Cameron Dance Center on Lafayette Street (in Nolita).
On my next visit to Chinatown, or to Little Korea (near Herald Square), I would like to try Korean fried chicken. "You haven't had it yet?" some of you foodies may be asking. What can I say; I'm a late bloomer.🌸😊
Thank you for viewing my video.🪷

Great footage. From watching your footage I can imagine you doing a voiceover describing your moment in the city. Keep up the great work.

Thank you for that compliment and for your encouragement.
I dislike my voice, and especially get annoyed that it fluctuates depending on whether I'm indoors or outdoors, on the season and on my present mood. Therefore, at least for now, I limit using my voice on my channel to livestreams.🙂

I hope you do. They're well-known, have excellent turnover and price their food for their community in Chinatown. So I'm sending positive vibrations into the multiverse that they'lll be in business for many more generations.👍🏼😊

Yep, I understand the bao love thing. That place is tiny. There was quite the line-up (a great sign, of course) but a kiosk is available for customers who wish to use plastic. Service was speedy and kind.😊

I haven’t tried pork buns but they do sound delicious and would be a nice snack. The menu looked good too. 👍😊🇨🇦

It's funny: Back in the day, I don't recall the shop being famous outside of NYC's Chinatown community. But, man-oh-man is it now!😄 That's great, though. Just know that my description of doesn't do the place justive. I'll be visiting Chinatown several more times this year, and I'll shoot more videos of different streets, businesses and a few surprises. What will not be a surprise is footage of the shop's exterior to show the delightful photos of all the snacks on offer. Inside is crammed, so I wouldn't want my camera jammed in people's faces. lol ... I know that wouldn't please me any.😅 In fact, the only reason I didn't film the exterior last week was that there was quite a line on a narrow street (Bayard Street), and I'm sure that I would've pissed off a lot of people waiting in the sweltering heat.🥵 Last thing I would've wanted was a punched nose and, as a result, not being able to see the kiosk in front of me to order my beloved pork buns.😂 I'm not ashamed to admit that I purchased a box of 10. I ate two for a snack and froze the rest when I reached home that night. Four remain in my freezer.😋 Those savory buns are so friggin delicious!😛 Their interiors are a nice balance of sauce and tiny chunks of BBQ pork. Adding soy sauce, hoisin sauce, duck sauce or any other type of condiment really isn't necessary. Of course, everyone taste buds are different.
Whilst I was *trying* to take a delicate bite (hah!), a saucy morsel dropped onto my never-before-worn white peasant blouse. You know what I did? I lifted my blouse to my lips and sucked the meaty mixture into my mouth before it could fall in front of a pigeon that was speeding toward the bench.🤭 A seagull might have just swooped down and ripped away my blouse. 🪽👕🪽💨 🤣 I was very hungry, but I'd never experienced a primal dining moment in public before that. I was afraid to peer around me in case anyone was staring.😒 Of course, I desperately scrubbed out the stain with my handy-dandy travel-size laundry product.😁
I hope that I haven't tortured you more than I've just tortured myself by reminiscing that al fresco snack.
Damned delectable bao buns!🤪 I love bao buns so much that I purchased a copy of Bao in 2018 (many months before director Domee Shi's sweet film short [for Pixar] won an Oscar), and I view it frequently.
Thanks for checking out this video, especially as it captured my long-anticipated return to one of my top three neighborhoods in my ol' hometown of New York, New York ... where 🎶"The Bronx is up and the Battery's down."🎶😊
