GWR 813 & 7714 - Gems Of The Severn Valley Railway (2019)

In this video we take a look at the smaller stars of the Severn Valley Railway in the guise of former Great Western Railway 0-6-0 Saddle Tank locomotive '813' (formerly Port Talbot & Docks Railway) which is now well established as a firm favourite with enthusiasts and photographers. The other star is question is a GWR Collett 5700 class pannier tank which is seen on a much heavier load due to increased passenger numbers on the Severn Valley Railway since the line re-opened after it's annual shutdown for maintenance.

Pannier tanks, saddle tanks, and tender engines have such wonderful characteristics. No country in the world can equal the diversity and history of British railways. There are now over 500 preserved steam locomotives and an assortment of diesel locomotives. Many societies have recaptured that of days long past. It is not just enjoyable but a privilege to step back into my youth. The acrid smell of burning coal, steam, and hot oil are like a perfume that pervades the air. The sound and beat of steam as the train leaves the station is a poetry to the ear and with its increasing distance, a goodbye to those left behind.

Both of these tanks are favourites of mine and thank you, Liam, for this superb footage of both working hard. That's a wonderful echo following the long whistle at 02:20. I noticed the drone at 05:30; although it didn't detract from my enjoyment of your video, I wonder what the SVR policy is especially with the withdrawal of lineside passes and in any case I thought there was a strict code of practice for drone operation in close proximity to railways. What a wonderful pairing Liam, I remember 7714 working at Penallta Colliery in the Rhymney Valley in 1967, and she was in a deplorable state, and just look at her now.
