  • Hello everyone,
    I've finally got myself onto a steam locomotive for a video, and we've set the bar extremely high, with the Hudswell Clarke known as 813, which was visiting the East Anglian Railway Museum from the Severn Valley Railway for the Museums steam gala, and I was lucky enough to be trusted with the regulator.
    A massive thank you to the 813 Preservation Fund for allowing the locomotive to visit us, and for saving it in the first place.

    British inside piston stream locomotives look so clean and simple but obviously the price is being hard to lubricate.

      @@lmm I caught the Big Boy as it was pulling away from Spring, TX on a lunch break. Such a ghostly whistle as if it's screaming out from another time period. I've been in love with trains since I was 3 and seeing your content is so satisfying. Keep it up! Would love to see more steam in the future, and good luck on your personal loco restoration. It's awesome!

      In my opinion, the two most beautiful engines we ever built was the streamlined Coronation Class, and the Mighty Class 37.

    GWR locomotives are very interesting. Most of them like the 1366 and the 1400s look different from other engines but watching them work on the rails is definitely astonishing

    GWR whistles are the Greatest thing since the single wheeler! I may be from the US but I get an absolute feeling of amazement whenever I hear that salute!

    I have seen some videos of this serie and i just want to say: excellent work! Very nice video, entertaining and interesting!
    I also noticed that in the UK there are many "train interested people" compared to the rest of Europe. I really like the abundance of preserved railways operated by volounteers you have. In Italy we have many preserved locos (also electric ones England does not like :P ) and many beautiful scenarios but there is not so much culture, appreciation and hype around trains. I should have a tour of UK railways ASAP! Thank you for your work :)

      ​@@lmm Thats right, my Dad started on the LMS as a Loco cleaner and worked his way up to fireman, he used to tell me how miserable it was in the winter when working underneath between the frames, he attained the lofty height of 5' 7" lol

    The larger the engineering the more fun you have. What a stunning well restored engine, although as with most steam engines, the open sides to the foot plate always have me on edge that someone looses their footing and goes bye bye!!

      She's a cracking piece of kit, and so very well looked after.
      On most large engines you've got little doors that lock in place - but they operate 813 in the dark on the SVR! So you'd really have to watch your footing!

    Mainly due to the first model railway loco I owned as a child, I've admittedly always favoured panniers over saddle tanks but this video and wonderful little loco was a pure joy to see, thank you! Oh and well done on oiling her up, you'd literally not physically be able get me in the inner workings...

    What i don't like about GWR is that when GWR absorbed some seperate railways, nearly all engines were swindonized (except trojan and some others). But an interesting loco nontheless.

      In the big sheds which served larger engines, the cleaners where indeed boys!
      There where people who's job was just to prep locos! Must have been terrible!

      A bit late, but, there was a whole culture involving the railroad. It'd usually involve a family of young boys and men throughout the whole establishment, from the switch table to the oilers in the engine shed. Young men, in their teens usually, would start off as cleaners, following in a family member's footsteps, be it a dad, an uncle, a brother, etc.
      The boy would clean the engine top to bottom and be trained as a fireman in between cleaning if they enjoyed the idea of firing an engine, and, once certified, the young man would then become a fireman and work under an engineer (who was also once a fireman) who drove the locomotive, and then, if willing, receive a certification to become an engineer of a locomotive, this creating a cycle and culture of the railroad. The railroad from the perspective of a steam engine was an adventure, always a risky, dangerous, and daring business that took passion and skill, and, you either loved it or hated it, and everything you did became a muscle memory, even how you fed the fires of the locomotive, which was different from one loco to the next. Big, living, breathing machines that had personalities and needs that differentiated from one engine to the next.

      It's a bit tight in there.
      Alot of our larger locomotives have three cylinders, so you have to oil up the outside and then the middle motion!

      Crickey. I'm just glad all the locomotives at my local heritage society are 2 outside cylinder ones, except for one which isn't restored yet

      We've a load of different engines lined up!
      If it was back in the day and there was a prep team, and I just turned up as a driver to take it off shed, that would have been fantastic.
      It really is just a super piece of kit.
      I just wish I could have taken it on a longer run!

    American steam locomotives usually have the running gear on the outside of the drive-wheels, the mechanical ballet of rods and levers fascinated me as a child, and still does.

      The motion is a beautiful thing to watch as it goes round. It's very common over here to have it all inside the frames, which gives it a more graceful exterior, but means you've got to climb underneath to oil it all up which frankly is a massive pain.

      Most four wheeled industrial steam locos have the cylinders on the outside, then normally a big hole in the frames to get to the motion 😂

      Yeah, it's a cracking engine. I think it's going to Didcot for a bit now, it'll look super in their shed.
      We did laugh about the concept of doing that to my 48! That or intercity swallow livery 😂

      @@lmm It was actually running today double heading with 7714 but I guess that’s probably it until next year for it now. Hopefully it will run a bit more next year!
      It certainly is a very enjoyable little thing. And not too bad to work on apart from being the smallest team member I get the short straw for any work inside water tanks. Not the most fun tanks to go inside!

      @@SteveLlewellynbgr It's just fantastic. It's absolutely lovely. It's just really really nice. It's just such a fantastic loco. It's just so so nice. It's absolutely fantastic.
      East Anglian Railway Museum used to be called the Stour Valley Railway. Until they realised they didn't actually have a line, so they changed the name.
      Now they've got 500 yards of track which they trundle up and down on but that's about it.
      Only loco worth seeing is N7 0-6-2 tank, the last of class. The rest of them are are just a handful of industrials. Loco shown is just a visitor.

    Loved your review of 813 and felt your pain of lubricating between the frames. I wonder how many staff got stuck, injured or killed climbing in only for someone to move the reverser and the engine.
    Lucky for me Puffing Billy's NA locos the eccentric oilers have been modified from between the frames to beside the tank tops. When I am operating the Garret it seems like I am oiling two engines, but it rides smoother than the NAs.

      I hate to think. Be very easy to get hurt in there if someone wasn't paying attention.

      It's a cracking peace of kit - certainly one of my favourites to see at they valley too!
      Yes, I can't remember the diesel that is converted to be a Toby at the EARM, but they've converted a Henrietta to go with it!

      Yeap, it's a little diesel Shunter under the woodwork. Used on the railways Thomas the tank engine days.

    You should review D2779 at EARM its a beautiful shunter! Or even some of the other locos there, I noticed the Toby conversion as well, was in the cab quite recently of Toby, its a little 0-7-0 conversion, essentially a D2779 cab with a custom built Toby body! Love the videos Lawrie! Can't wait to start my volunteer work at EARM as well :)

    Your knowledge of steam locomotives is impressive. You're basically doing my dream job, but I can see I'd have a lot to learn. Unfortunately there's not much in the way of steam here in Northern British Columbia, so the closest I'll likely get is a steam car or maybe an old tractor. Still, interesting to watch. Good video.

      I've been volunteering on the footplate for over a decade now, it's not my job sadly.
      We've always got more to learn.. That is the problem for you guys, distance between places and getting to railways is an issue.

      Oliver is based on a 14xx, which is really quite different to 813.
      I'd really like a go on a 14xx.
      The toad is pretty much the same though.

    Brings back memories or the else at railway with the Peckett 2150 mechanical lubricator but still had oilpots inside the frames for the slide valves was an absolute arse on a Sunday morning lol

    I have her as my profile picture on Facebook when I saw her at the Severn Valley. And what you should do with a GWR loco is blow both whistles at the same time, that's really fun.

      The low pitched whistle was for the guard in the brake van, to give him instructions.

    amazing video of an amazing loco used to be at the east Somerset railway at one point but the Severn valley took it back for an overhaul I believe I think most people speak well of it.

      I just love the system of slapping the safety valve bonnet on standing back and going, yep, that's proper now. 😂
      There's a couple around that the GWR got their hands on. It really is just so lovely. The EARM did very well to be able to borrow it!

    Hi Lawrie, it is so good to see that a man can still get excited and connect with a machine like this. I am sure that this feeling was shared by the men of the footplate in days of yore.
    I have not seen bells on the engines, something so common on engines in the USA for crossings.
    In the US, the forward / reverse lever is referred to as the Johnson bar, what is it called there? Also, re that lever, I noticed that you were able to operate in the last notch or two before dead center. In the US, that is called the company notch for obvious reasons, any equivalent term there?       I love being on the footplate, and I'm so super proud to have the skillset to be able to drive locomotives.
      I think some tramway locos over here had bells, otherwise we didn't really have them.
      I had no idea that's what you called it! In the UK it's simply known as the 'reverser'
      The knotches are just known as knotches, with full forward or full backwards being putting the lever into maximum travel.

    44 tons and 17,000 lbs. of tractive effort makes this locomotive the standard gauge English equivalent of the J&L 58. Except for more room in the cab!

    I'd be worried that while I was straddling the main connecting rod that someone would decide the loco was in the way and be moved. I hope lock out - tag out proceedure s are practiced. Also have a question, is that interlocking building still functional?

      Firstly, I'm the driver, no one else is authorised to touch the controls - it also has a 'Not to be moved' board on the Loco, it may not be moved until the person who put the board on the Loco removes said board.
      The signal box? Yeah that works all the points and signals.

    We had her one year for polar express at Telford steam railway with 5619 I wasn’t part of the railway then but it sounded good going out of the station

    I lived not far from the Bowaters Paper Railway which I can still dimly remember its early days as the SKLR where this musuem's Jubilee worked very well for long years. You should try and get into a Lancashire boiler, snug is an understatement and don't make the mistake of taking lunch in with you cos you might have gotten in with a squeeze... couple pies later and you ain't getting out until nature has done its business hehe.

      Formerly known as Number 23, was an old sulzer shunter prior to it's conversion, does still get used on Thomas days and on occasions where needed for shunting purposes :)

      Having the right oil cans would help. This is why they made big oil cans with hoses and a gooseneck on the end so you can oil them from the pit.

    Great video. Love that green.
    It is a quiet engine but I still had trouble understanding you in the cab. Don't know if you had a microphone on or not.
    Why would they build it to where you have to crawl inside it like that? Craziness.
    All in all enjoyed the video. Good history and backstory.

    On Swedish locomotives the oil cups have a proper spring-loaded cap instead of a cork. You flick the cap open with the spout of the can. It ought to be an easy modification.

      Quite a few locos have that kind of oil pot, I assume with this it's just about keeping it authentic.

      As you might have been able to tell, I have a massive soft spot for steam locos too!! 813 is a wonderful example of a Swindonised industrial, and everything just works as it should! It's fantastic.

      @@lmm L.N.E.R., from (probably defective) memory. Of course, they all ended up in BR. My part of the family left the UK for Australia in 1968, but I do remember being on a steam train to Brighton around 1967. I have a picture, in a book about Anna Pavlova, which shows the ballerina on the steps of a loco driven by my grandad! My uncles made the TV when they retired, not too many sets of twins that were both train drivers!

    Oh, what a pain in the ass it must be to oil this locomotive I myself come from Germany and hardly know any locomotives that have the pistols inside with us everything is clean, easy to operate and to wait nothing against English locomotives, they are just a real feast for the eyes very difficult to wait as far as I know with best regards Florian S.
    PS. Nice Videos am a big fan thinks how you explain each locomotive and show how it is finished a big thank you at the point

    It would be interesting, if you ever get the chance, to compare 813 to a non-swindonised Hudswell Clarke loco, see if the Great Western improved the loco or if it was just great to begin with.

    I think this is one of the rare cases where I wish the railway HAD closed so that the society could get the track. I can't imagine it's too high traffic either. I'm not up to speed on where Network Rail would stand on running powers for smaller heritage societies; I know the NYMR runs to Whitby on mainline track regularly (or at least did last time I went), so I wonder if there were plans to have a service.

    How does the sight glass tell you the water level with so little water in there? And y does she have 2 whistles?

      Because that's the level of water in the boiler.

      Multiple whistles were more common than you might think. Horses react better to lower tones (sometimes referred to as 'hooters' - stop sniggering at the back) as fitted by Stanier and on MacLeod's Isle of Wight fleet, where a high pitched screech could easily startle them, with effects obvious to anyone familiar with horses.
      Then too, whistle signal codes were "a thing" back in the days before 2 way radio. Picture yourself as the signalman at some remote junction ... knowing what sort of train was coming in from which direction, or where it was bound was essential.
      Remember .... even today, stuff breaks down, so even working timetables are mere theory until a particular train actually turns up!!
