    Wearing a mask for any amount of time can be painful on the ears. These simple little fabric ear savers make wearing those necessary masks so much more comfortable. There's many way to make something similar but this is how I made mine. Adult - 2" x 6" Child - 2" x 5"
    Measurements:
    All pieces are cut the same size. Two pieces of cotton fabric or fabric of choice (main fabric). One piece of batting. You can also stabilizer one or both pieces of main fabric.

    Another thought: put another button or two along the ear saver. Gives some more adjust-ability. Especially as the elastic gets stretched out over time.
    Need to shorten it? Take left elastic, hook it over right button, right elastic over left. You could even twist the elastic before hooking around a button.

    I make a strip of them at a time. Backstitch at the beginning and end of each section. Leave like a 1/4” gap between each pieces end and starting another. Cut them apart then chain piece the ends. Turn them all right side out. Then chain stitch the gaps closed while doing the surface stitches all the way around. Sew on the buttons or Velcro. Dozens done at a time vs doing them one by one. Just an idea for people mass producing! (Ps Don’t try the batting on the bottom as it can easily snag in the feed dogs and can eat up that piece of batting if you don’t catch it quick enough.)

    You could interface one long strip and then sew (or serge) on the end seams, leaving a space to cut them apart. In that way you could make several from one strip. You could just skip a couple of inches on the long side of each one (back stitching as you went) so that you could turn the pieces.

      I’m sorry, I hadn’t thought about those with hearing aids. I don’t know anyone close to me that wears them. I imagine wearing a mask would be very annoying. I hope ear savers help.

    Make it with a velcro fastener one one side to make attachment easier. When mask is not in use the ear saver wont get lost. If worn for a short period of time the earsaver can hang down on one side ready for use if needed.

    You've I inspired me. I'm going to sew one of the buttons on one side of the mask so that it's actually a part of the mask and doesn't get lost.

      That's a novel idea and I like it. You could even skip the button entirely and just sew the ear saver to the mask elastic on one side, if you want to supply each of your masks with its own ear saver.

    Not something I've thought about making (unless I had a request of course) but it's a good idea anyway. I don't tie the elastic on my masks now - I just thread it through the channel and let the wearer decide where to tie it - I cut the length a bit longer to allow for their knot tying :)

    • @rsislandcrafts
      @rsislandcrafts  4 года назад +2

      I thought about not tying the elastics but I stopped making masks. For now at least.

    If needle won't go through run it carefully through your hair don't hit your scalp or put the needle in a cake of Ivory soap like we did when we used pins in diapers.

    Thanks, I was wondering how to make these. If you have 1 of those tomato and strawberry pin cushions the strawberry is for sharpening needles, etc. Looks like I need to go to the craft store now that they're open to get some stuff for making these.

    I think I'm gonna have to switch to making them squared like this. I have been making them w rounded ends. Dont mind sewing them that way, but my hand gets sore from clipping the curves. Thanks Robin!!!!

    • @rsislandcrafts
      @rsislandcrafts  4 года назад +1

      I love the round look because It reminds me of a barrette but they do take more time and effort. For myself I wouldn’t mind making a handful of rounded edge ones but If I were making dozens for others I would go with the square edges.

      We are finding it easy to quarantine bc we live 32miles from the nearest town. I am off work for the foreseeable future as I work for a mom n pop. So one mask each has been fine for us and we have plenty of time to wash them between trips. But I have made about 50 of the Olsen masks for friends and family who work jobs that have constant public contact. So now making them ear savers. A handful are done rounded. But me thinks the rest will be squared!!! I am making them from the leftover pieces from cutting the face shapes out, so they have fusible interface on both pieces. But are still fairly thin. Would you recommend I put batting in the rest of them?? I never have to wear my mask for more than an hour so I havent had to deal w sore ears yet.

    • @rsislandcrafts
      @rsislandcrafts  4 года назад +2

      I suggest making one with the interfacing and trying it out. That’s what I did with mine. I did not interface any of mine. I felt that the two fabrics on their own didn’t feel sturdy enough or comfortable. Maybe the double interfacing will be enough to keep the ear savers from feeling like It could twist.

    Hi Robin thank you for the idea but the extension could get lost in the washer and dryer easy no criticism intended maybe if they somehow could be attached to the mask just a thought have a safe day

    • @hume6900
      @hume6900 4 года назад +1

      Just Me, I think that would be fairly easy. I would just make a channel on each end of the ear saver, feed the elastic through during final construction phase and then feed it into the mask and everything is connected.

    • @trinam2503
      @trinam2503 4 года назад +6

      I put my masks and ear savers in a lingerie bag when washing.

    • @rsislandcrafts
      @rsislandcrafts  4 года назад +2

      I would wash mine by hand or TK had a great idea of using a lingerie bag. They need to be washed after each use just like the mask and if you only have one or two that could be daily. I don’t do laundry daily so I wash mine by hand.

    I really like your pad for the mask in back in the rest! I ve been a nursing RN and I never learn a surgeon note myself- I did sneakers ties for kids and me but i never it was a surgeon knot- I like the way you tied the front of knot into top of button - What size is button, by the way?

    • @rsislandcrafts
      @rsislandcrafts  4 года назад +1

      The button size will depend on your elastic width. The button needs to be wide enough to hold the elastic. 3/4” at the smallest. As I mentioned in the video a shank button can be used if the shank isn’t too high but It would need to be sewn on very securely.

    • @rsislandcrafts

      I also have asthma and struggle with anything across my face. I use my inhaler before I go out and I try to keep my mask time as short as possible. As soon as I’m clear of the store/door I let the mask hang from one ear. For me I find It easier to breath through my mouth with the mask on. Nobody can see that I’m walking around with my mouth a little open which is nice. I can’t use any stabilizer or flannel for my masks. I also keep my mask a little loose on my face. Not too much of course but just so that the fabric isn’t pressed against my face/mouth. Some people just aren’t able to wear a mask due to medical conditions. I hope you find a way to make mask wearing easier for yourself.

      @@rsislandcrafts maybe a different style would help. I think they're calling them 3D. Absolutely no flannel it's too hot and it holds moisture.

    • @susanmazzanti5643
      @susanmazzanti5643 4 года назад

      If you are make the masks with the front seam, you can add extra fabric in the middle so that it is looser over the end of the nose. Also the recommended masks for choirs has a lot more room over the mouth and nose, I think there are some RUclips tutorials on how to do these. It might look a little funny but it would stop the pressure across your face. I hope you find a good solution.

    when using an ear saver how much more ear elastic will be needed for the stretch?

    • @rsislandcrafts
      @rsislandcrafts  4 года назад +2

      It depends on the person and the size of the mask/ear saver. Generally speaking based on my mask video and ear saver video I would add 2” for the first one and then try It on to see how it fits. Better a bit loose than tight. The wearer can always add a little knot to the elastic if needed.

      I prefer one that is not quite that sharp only for my safety. I always stab myself no matter how careful I am. You can use whichever needle works for you.
