Hey Kat, thanks for checking out the video. I gave her that cut because she brought in a photo and wanted it. My main goal will always be making my client happy before anything else. I agree She could look great in longer hair too but I also like her in short hair.

She is a beautiful woman and is cute with short hair, however she looked younger with long hair. I think you should have given her a little more feminine cutesy haircut. I have long hair and this short hairstyle has an aging effect.

I’m glad that you added that qualifier to your statement on color. I made a very deliberate choice early on, never to cover my grey. In my 60s now, I’m very happy with my grey hair. Healthy, shiny, and cut in a sleek bob, it suits my style and personality! And I will never have to deal with the awkward transition from coloring to my natural grey. It would be great if more stylists would encourage and support their clients’ desire to rock natural grey/silver/white!
Naomi Alexander I appreciate your opinion for sure. And I would think the exact same thing, but I actually don’t recommend color to all of my clients and I don’t think it’s necessary for everyone. It’s a matter of a lot of different factors and in some cases color isn’t the best option. If we’re talking about color or no color from an aging perspective, there’s definitely a benefit to doing color.
Poor woman, I bet she was thinking to herself: I just wanted a trim! Her expressions after the cut was so upsetting. I can see how much she regretted and wanted to cry. Poor girl ...:(
Interesting take. She was actually very happy. She brought in a photo of what she wanted and that’s what we did. I appreciate you checking out the video though.
I always associate short hair on women with older ladies. All my friends and myself had long hair when I was growing up. The women around me always seemed to cut their hair short when they got to be 'women of a certain age'.
Hey Saskatoon, I don’t think you’re alone in that. I think there are a lot of folks out there that associate short hair with a certain age, there are also folks that feel the exact opposite. I think the important thing is to have the length of hair you feel most confident in, but still pay attention to the shape/style etc so it works best for you.
That would have been an problem considering she had a photo and wanted to cut it short. I agree she would also have looked great in longer hair as well as shorter hair.
Hi Justin, I think the cut is unflattering. You say that your client wanted it cut short. Maybe you could show yourself and the client having a discussion about her hair.
I like your tips however her hair cut is a little on the tomboy side and I believe it does make her look older to make her look younger it should have been more in a short wedgy style Bob that it has some longer movement on the sides even on just one side. To me that would have been more on trend and less boyish.
I watched to the end waiting for the styling which didn’t happen. I did not like it and would be surprised if your customer kept that style. Too severe.
When I turned 50, my stylist said I needed to lighten my normally dark brown hair because I’d be turning grey shortly, and doing this would help the transition. I let her do it, plus she cut my long hair short. I looked OLD. Since then, I have had no color put in, have a side part, and wear bangs. My hair has yet to turn grey and I’m 67. It is now below waist-length, and the comment I hear most often is how much people love my hair! I use no products, no heat, no anything. Wash, condition and let it air dry.
@@brendalancaster901 My hair is not Crystal Gayle length; just below the waist. Since I get such a wide variety of people, including both friends and strangers saying the same thing, I tend to believe them. And what exactly ARE the “rules” for hairstyles for women aged over 65?
Awesome I bet your hair looks stunning! I just turned 30 and I'm probably twice as grey as you haha! But I keep my natural silver hair and I honestly don't give two craos what other people think or tell me would be better, you know what looks good on yourself for you! And that's what matters :) my mom is 52 and she's got waist length hair and I think it's the most beautiful hair. I wish mine was like hers
I’ve been told most of my life that I resemble Goldie Hawn, but as I got to 50 I was frightened that I couldn’t pull off the longer hair so I made my hubby cry by having it cut in a LopBob , then a Bob then a layered Bob , great haircuts and I really suited layered bob but.....I LOOKED OLDER ...OLDER and no more GH comments . Thank goodness 18 months later Ive longer hair again, not as long as it was( it was middle of my back) I now have photos to remind me ..Everyone is different and sometimes a hairstyle can change more than just your looks , I felt older more sophisticated which for me was not good because it sort off made me act older, more grown up !
Her short hair made her look like all the other senior women. They all cut off their hair and look older and the same. Almost none of them style their short hair cute. I short, sassy cut would be better, or put her longer hair back on and give her bangs, maybe, and a side part. I’ve been a stylist for 45 years, so I’m that senior age. It would take a lot of work, but a video combined with short and sassy hair, or longer hair, in combination with make up and clothing fashion that shows the before and after. Fabulous 50’s RUclips guru does something like this but she’s not a stylist. I love your videos and you are a true artist! I don’t mean to be so critical, I’m just old enough to relate to this topic.
I wouldn't go short because of my face and body shape. I have slighlty broad shoulders "swimmers shoulders". I feel body shape/bone structure needs to be taken into account as well when cutting hair.
Well, while shorter is better for her face, it could have had some style and movement, certainly a little longer. This is the haircut my Aunt wore back in the sixties for far to many years. She lived in a small town and went to the nearby salon where the hairdressers were very limited with their skills and was twenty years behind the times. I do not want to be critical but this looks like a cheap, fast looking haircut from the salons (Hair Cuttery)that use to charge $11 per head ! I read an article a while back which stated the majority of women will not complain to their hairdresser for the disappointment, for fear they will do a worse job next time to get back for the complaint. She looks miserable and shows no joy from the experience. Also, you do not give her the chance to speak? However, you are a great salesman. Sorry, but this is just unacceptable or an attractive woman.
It always seems like once you hit a certain age as a woman, you have to join the short hair club. She looks great but could have gotten a youthful cut/style while keeping some length. Its not always about cutting the hair off.
I totally understand why you think that! I definitely made a mistake when putting this video together. I actually agree with you 100%. The fact that my client wanted to cut her hair short (she had a photo) was a total coincidence. Actually I have a video being released at 6:15 tomorrow morning I’d love to get your feedback on. :)
💥READ THIS FIRST💥 I need to clear something up about this video. When I made this I didn’t intend for it to send a message that at a certain age you needed to cut your hair short. I wanted to create a video, needed a model and had a friend who wanted a haircut and agreed to be in the video. She had a photo of the cut she wanted (which was what we did) and I figured I could cut her hair and explain my points regardless of what length the cut was. I apologize for the miscommunication on my end. Thanks for checking out the video.
Isn't it part of the stylist's job to say something like I'm not so sure that's the best cut for you when a client brings in a photo? Then point out why it might not be the best? As a stylist, I would have done a lot to dissuade this lady from getting this cut, which I can tell was obviously going to age her and discussed a few other styles which could be just as short but more attractive for her face.
I don't think she looked happy to start with, and the cut, I thought is aged her. Moving the part to the side cutting a little off would had been great.
@@justinhickox it is a beautiful cut, but as the stylist, shouldn't you have shown her how a chin length bob would look fab on her? If she is happy, you did your job and it is a great cut.
She looked younger and better with the longer, lighter hair. Also, darker hair infront of a dark shirt didn't work well. I couldn't see any details. Jmo.
She didn't look very happy afterwards, I know that you said her husband called later on and said that she did, but normally when you get a haircut you love, you're smiling at the least and you don't need your husband to speak for you! I also think that you've given her a haircut that just makes her look like someone that's given up, you've given her a convenient haircut, not a beautiful or youthful one. A longer style would have been more forgiving on her face.
Suzy Anderson in one place he said that her husband called him and another, that the husband messaged him, so there’s that. 😊 I have long, thick, curly Mediterranean hair. I’ve had lots of different styles and my husband has loved some. He never would call a stylist to thank her/him for cutting my hair. That’s just too bizarre to believe. No, she did not look happy at all. When I’m happy about a new style, I’m all smiling and shaking my hair around and dancing in the mirror. When I’m not happy, I have that same look on my face this this woman has. We all know how that facial expression feels. I bet Justin is the type of stylist that, when a client doesn’t like what he’s done, he blames her and mansplains why he is right and she is wrong.
After watching this I ran to check the comments. I was hoping I wasn’t the only one who thought the shorter cut aged her tremendously. There could have been a much cuter short style without the bubble back. I hate the two-tone on top and dark on the bottom and this emphasized her jawline. Something cute and spiky and edgy might have looked a little better, and I don’t think that the longhair did her much justice, but the longer hair was much better option over this particular cut! I hope she was happy with it and it suited her lifestyle and she is enjoying it. Perhaps a little different styling would make it look more fun and less carpool.
Hey! I can totally appreciate this. We’re all entitled to our own opinions. Thank you for responding in a constructive and mature manner even though you disagree with my video. To answer your last question/comment, she was totally happy with it, she actually had a photo of what she wanted and that’s what we did. Her husband even reached out to me a few days later to say how much she loved it, which made me happy too. Have a great weekend.
@@justinhickox you are a real professional. Thanks for your gentle reminder to think before typing MY opinion! Jeez! I need to just think first!! She was a beautiful lady before and after.. I am so happy it was what she wanted. None of us want to be criticized for our choices.. especially when it comes to our appearance I’ve spent years as a make up artist and I know better! Your work is beautiful and I love your videos. From now on I will just remember to be kind. I’ve learned that from you! Your reply was a true gentleman.
I absolutely agree with that! My point would simply be that the longer the hair is, the more limiting it is to being able to cut shape into which helps accentuate a persons face shape etc. I have plenty of clients that are older with longer hair and it looks great on them. It’s just a matter of “longer” vs “too long” for a particular person.
@Annette Sandoval Depends on the length. I think the longest for an older woman would be collar or chin length. Anything else drags the face down and makes a person look older. You need a length that gives you a face lift.
AZSinbad long hair with long, soft layering can look lovely on an older woman who wants length. I would have loved to see this woman in a bob: shorter in back and about shoulder length in front, with golden highlights. Is this what she wanted, or did she give you carte Blanche and left looking like that? Dude, read her face. She did not like it.
Vera W. Yes, I hate short hair, I’m sixty now and my still naturally brown hair is the longest it’s ever been. Short hair isn’t practical for me, I spend all winter wearing hats which flatten those cuts. I also live in a windy place, so being able to put it up or tie it back is essential.
Her hair was better longer. It just needed a style that looked better than parting it in the middle. The short hair did not suit her at all.Maybe next video if you wore a white shirt we could see the cut better.I couldn't see it very good against the black t shirt.
@@justinhickox I have to agree with many others about the haircut not being right for her. Fine from the front , but the way it sat at the crown. She is a pretty model & I liked her hair colour, perhaps a few lighter streaks. I watched your video on styles for round faces. Spot on for most round faces. I was born with lots of fine hair & low forehead. I dreamed of having a higher one & do now I am in my 60s with hair falling out. That is why I have a layered fringe/bang. Looking forward to more videos.
Narrelle Weir thank you for the feedback! I’m pretty open to recognizing when I screw up. The more I look at this cut, the more I feel it may have not been the best one for this particular video. This was a scenario of my client wanting short hair and me wanting to film a video. Looking at it now, there’s a lot of things (lighting included) that I could absolutely improve in and will be working on moving forward. Thank you for your considerate feedback.
The haircut itself is perfect...except that it looks like my mother's in 70's :) I don't like it , because it makes this particular model look less feminine ....perhaps could look better in a slightly different color or with some added highlights or melier to add some accent and lead attention away from the aging bottom part of her face?? Also, it certainly might look perfect on some other model...
Sorry but that’ s an old lady hair cut, even with the lovely styling. I’m 65 and this haircut is exactly the sort of style that women have been told they should have after a certain age - so it’s not about looking old, it’s about fitting into a style rule. So, how about if you do something different for the women who are old enough to not want to have this old lady’s haircut and would like to see what can be done with a center part and medium long hair that can look youthful and different from the style in your video which is so outdated for older women. Perhaps you aren’t old enough to remember when women were told that once they were over a certain age they shouldn’t leave their hair long - and thus a rule is created for no reason and without a recognition that women are different and many of us like our long hair . Perhaps that he cut in this video works for the women here, but how old is she. - if she’s not over 60 or so then perhaps she shouldn’t be used as the example of how to make older women look younger.
Hey! I actually agree with most everything you said. I did make a big mistake with this video. I stand behind the cut and the info I gave but my mistake was in the subject of the video and my filming app approach. In this case my model actually wanted short hair, she brought in a photo. I needed a model, and she wanted a haircut and was willing to be on film. I actually never thought about the implication that cutting her hair short would make towards the idea of long hair being wrong for any particular age group. I actually have a lot of clients from all age groups with Different lengths of hair. I truly don’t think a hair length is specific to an age, my only point with the comments about long hair was that the longer your hair is the harder it is to layer it in a way that is beneficial for any face shape or age. It’s just more dictating of how you cut the layers so it’s harder cut cut shape into hair. I do appreciate your well thought out and delivered feedback. Thanks for checking out my video!
It can be a bit awkward for some folks to be on camera. She loved the style. Her husband even messaged me the next day to say how much she loved it and how much he loved it. :). I can see why you’d think that though.
Bring back the old 70s shag. I loved that look it was so slick, I was in high school and my hair was so pretty hugging my face all different lengths all over it was ahead of its time.
Sugar Free that’s a very-popular look right now in Japan. Go on Pinterest and search for “modern shag cut” and you’ll see many! Don’t judge my hair by my avi. That was a few weeks ago after a half marathon. My hair is long and tied up there.
@@JaimeMesChiens thank you. I will go on Pinterest and look. I wouldn't judge your hair anyway. I'm sure it's lovely I looked at all the beautiful pictures the lovely styles. I have quite a bit of long hair but I think since I'm over 55 now I should probably have a short Shag like I did in high school. Your pictures are beautiful
The woman’s hair, which should be the focus, fades into the stylist’s black shirt. It would have been a better visual to have her hair pop against a lighter color worn by him. Also, I did not understand why the disruption of a guy eating pizza.
Hey! Actually it wasn’t a plug at all. I LOVE doing video and before this video I’d learned a new editing technique. I wanted to use it because the creativity of video makes me happy. I absolutely agree the acting sucks! Lol....I’m definitely not an actor, but I just wanted to have some fun, share a personal side of me with you all (I truly do love pizza) and that’s what I did. :)
Thank you for sharing this info. I personally think what makes women look older is dying their hair and wearing too much makeup. I know this probably does not make sense to most people, but I feel that by doing this, a severe contrast is created and a sort of desperation is illuminated. I think women that have beautiful gray hair and minimal to no makeup appear to age more gracefully, thus giving the impression that they are healthy and mentally stable. I also think that long hair, if styled correctly and well maintained is so beautiful on older women, especially when it's gray. Peace and Love to all!
I agree with all your comments on hair mistakes. I myself am older now and as much as I tried to grow my hair longer by having the stylist add layers and some highlights, it wasn’t the best look for me compared to my shorter cut now. Adding layers definitely adds volume to my hair, which is fine in texture but a lot of it, and highlights add an extra lovely dimension. Justin, show us some tips on bangs, which ones look best with the shorter styles and which ones to stay away from that will “add” to our age. Thanks!
I seriously think I like it better before the short cut. Perhaps if she styled it a little better it would have looked nicer. However, it looked okay as it was.
I’m 47 and I grew out my natural silver 4 years ago. Can you do an episode about natural salt and pepper hair? From care to styles to keep it looking younger and fresh. At some point, I will consider strategic lowlights but I’m not sure how to approach that. Thanks.
Hello, Justin. I am a 70 years youg follower and admirer.. I am Spanish, from Barcelona, and I wanted to tell you, that we, spanish women, never let our hair go grey. We always dye it, usually in a lighter colour.
Thank you so much! I so much appreciate that support. That’s very interesting, I always love learning about different cultures. Thank you for sharing that insight.
I'm 52 and my thick, naturally waving hair is all 1 length between my bra strap and my waist and have been debating on getting a MAJOR cut. Now, I second guessing it....🤔
Oh noooo! She looks older. I'm in my fifties with long hair and Everyone guesses me 10 to 15 years younger! I do, however, agree with styling our hair. Flat and frizzy hair is what ages us. Another tip is for us to tone down our highlights. I no longer have the level 10 or 11 hair color anymore. I opt for golden tones.
Good video, Justin, but may I suggest you wear a lighter t-shirt if the client has dark hair or dark shirt if the client is a blonde or light grey? I found it difficult the shape of her haircut. Thank you. 🇨🇦
Justin you are such a character! Your tip on this vid for short hair......ummmmm🤔 that hairstyle is very popular in our Retirement Homes Downunder NZ 😳 Thing is, for those of us chics over 60 we like to have our hairstyle disguising and softening our unforgiving chins 😉 but still keeping funky & on trend. Love your videos Justin & Thankyou!
Why is it that women over 40 have to have short hair???? I’ve had long hair ever since I was a kid and now at the age of 66 I wouldn’t think of cutting my hair. I couldn’t care less about those people who think I shouldn’t have long hair.
Hey Terri, I agree with you (I know it may not seem like that) here’s another video you may like with better insight for you... ruclips.net/video/LldZrexm7Rs/видео.html
Justin Hickox Thanks Justin! I watched the video and my hair actually did become more coarse over time. My solution? Hair extensions. They have covered up a multitude of sins.
Initially when her hair was in her face (just after you cut it...it was 'edgy') but after you styled it you made her look 20 years older. Sorry for the critique.
I have to agree to disagree. Shorter hair doesn’t mean more daily maintenance. Unless you’re comparing it to pulling longer hair back into a ponytail (which a lot of people do). Nothing wrong with that, just saying that would be one of the few scenarios that would see longer hair being lower maintenance than shorter.
Btw, there are some really rude people in this world. It just seems like they want to try and hurt someone. It really makes me sad for them. You can have your own opinions, just express them in a less offensive way. I personally try to live by this advice. IF YOU CAN BE ANYTHING, BE KIND.
I hear ya. I’m all about constructive criticism but unfortunately some folks aren’t very heavy on the constructive part! :) I appreciate the folks out there like yourself. Thank you.
I just found your videos and I would like to see some options for much older women with square faces. For instance, like me, I have thinning grey hair now that is completely unruly. It's frizzy it doesn't lay straight yet it's not exactly a curly hair either. I think it could be styled to be decent if it wasn't so unruly. At my age, I have no idea what to do with it. Don't know if coloring it is best or not, getting a flat iron or curling iron is best. Just lost. I really would rather spend as little ’daily’ time on it as possible. I would love to see a video that covers all of this that we much older women run into. Thank you so much!

Hi Justin, I think the cut is unflattering. You say that your client wanted it cut short. Maybe you could show yourself and the client having a discussion about her hair.
That went from late 40s to 60 fast. I found this old video while trying to decide whether or not to cut my hair. It was extremely helpful.
This cut did not do her any favors. I think a Goldie Hawn cut/style would have looked great!

They say they love it but they really don't. 67 is too old to have Crystal Gayle hair.
@@brendalancaster901 My hair is not Crystal Gayle length; just below the waist. Since I get such a wide variety of people, including both friends and strangers saying the same thing, I tend to believe them. And what exactly ARE the “rules” for hairstyles for women aged over 65?
@C.M. Bright Thank you!! I absolutely intend to do those things that make me happy! And, BTW, my hairdresser loves my “look”!
Interesting video. But I would prefer to see styles for longer hair suitable for the more mature person.
She looked better with longer hair,. Did not like hair cut.

She now looks like she’ll be going to the “beauty parlour” once-a-week for a shampoo/set.
Hideous cut!

3:47 - WHAAAT Is THIS? OMG, poor woman. :(
😂😂😂😂😂
The silhouette is not hood for her. I think she had longer hair to camouflage her chin and neck area. This shortness accentuates it and ages her.
Red this, Justin?
You should have disclosed this in the beginning of the video.
When cutting/styling a brunette, please wear a white shirt. I can’t tell where her dark hair stops and your black shirt begins.
he made her look older

racoonsister for sure
racoonsister she looks great
I think on a mature woman, the jawline from the side is important to consider. This hairdo do is an old lady do and shows flaws on her profile.
That is the first thing I thought!
I don't think she looked happy to start with, and the cut, I thought is aged her. Moving the part to the side cutting a little off would had been great.
She looks like she's going to cry
That hair put years on her. A chin length bob would have suited her much more.
In this situation she had a photo she wanted to cut it like, and that photo was short. She was happy so I was happy. :)
@@justinhickox it is a beautiful cut, but as the stylist, shouldn't you have shown her how a chin length bob would look fab on her? If she is happy, you did your job and it is a great cut.
She looked stunning with the long hair. Should have wash d , condition and dry. Maybe a few soft curles around the face would be lovely.
I agree she looked great with long hair as well. She had a photo and wanted to go short so that’s what we did.
Hello how are you doing 👋😀☺️☺️🙈
I have long, thick, curly Mediterranean hair.
Jvm
Your work is beautiful and I love your videos. From now on I will just remember to be kind. I’ve learned that from you! Your reply was a true gentleman.
The longer hair suited her better or even a bob would've been better. 👍
Long hair can be beautiful on older women.
@@JaimeMesChiens Exactly.

I liked her hair long…..she looked better!
So true, she look younger in her long hair.. By chopping off hair she is looking older..as her face features can be seen easily.
Ugh; all the same old tropes about being too old for long hair, and then the granny cut.
Vera W. Yes, I hate short hair, I’m sixty now and my still naturally brown hair is the longest it’s ever been. Short hair isn’t practical for me, I spend all winter wearing hats which flatten those cuts. I also live in a windy place, so being able to put it up or tie it back is essential.
Her overall looks better with longer hair.
She looks like a mom now, never go short
i love my short blond bob. It feels playful and way more movement than trying to grow my scraggy thin hair
I couldn’t agree more, I liked it better long and she looked younger
Her hair was better longer. It just needed a style that looked better than parting it in the middle. The short hair did not suit her at all.Maybe next video if you wore a white shirt we could see the cut better.I couldn't see it very good against the black t shirt.
I agree. I think she looked better and younger with the longer hair. Just needed some layers and shaping.

@@justinhickox you are welcome Justin. Hoping to see many more videos with ideas I can share😊
The haircut itself is perfect...except that it looks like my mother's in 70's :)
I don't like it , because it makes this particular model look less feminine ....perhaps could look better in a slightly different color or with some added highlights or melier to add some accent and lead attention away from the aging bottom part of her face??
Also, it certainly might look perfect on some other model...
She was looking younger before.
I actually have a lot of clients from all age groups with
Different lengths of hair.
She looked very sad :(
Amy Nardi Matthes don’t worry, she was very happy. :)
Tracey Edwards thank you Tracey and I absolutely agree 1000%!!!
Great cut! It pulls your eye up and shortens her face. Gives her chin more dimension.
She didn’t look happy with the end style
It can be a bit awkward for some folks to be on camera. She loved the style. Her husband even messaged me the next day to say how much she loved it and how much he loved it. :). I can see why you’d think that though.
I did not like her hair at all way too short made her look older
Shelia LaMie Agree.
She didn't look happy with the original style, anything was better than that
Why???? Why???! You cut her hair to short. It doesn’t look good on her IMHO

I would like to hear about blow drying at home. It always looks so good after a stylist does it, but hard to recreate it at home. Thank you!
I agree with you.
@@suzyque awww, thank you so much Suzyque! Most people never agree with me on anything. LOL! You've made my day!

Shorter hair, fewer options, more daily maintenance. I think your model looked “younger” with longer hair
I’ve short hair. Little or no maintenance.
I think that haircut made her face look fresher. Very nice👍
