    Thank you. Finally someone has made a detailed review on this issue. I get that the comparison charts and fancy graphs make more sense for a lot of people, but all I wanted to hear was a personal insight on the eye strain and fringing issue. I think you deserve a lot more views, especially for this video because it's a very debated topic. I immediately clicked on the subscribe button when you started talking about the text color fringing at desktop distance around 3:50

    Hey great test! I always found picture in LG panels more pleasant to the eyes. Maybe glossy woled settles the debate and brings peace to the world, but this one is top tier for me

    Thank you so much for this video! I originally bought the MSI 321 MPG UPX (QD-OLED, 4K, 240HZ) because I wanted a glossy screen and heard the colors were better. The day I started using it I was getting really bothered by the text fringing, it made text look...acidic? Despite it being a 4K screen and everyone saying that fringing wasn't an issue at that resolution if you weren't a "pixel peeper". I took a chance and tried ordering a W-OLED hoping that the text would look better and it honestly looks perfect. The colors also can pop just as hard once it's calibrated (to get that QD vibrancy, upping the saturation a tad works quite well)
    My only gripe is the matte coating gives a "covered in oil" grainy effect to some colors (especially white webpages), but I'd rather have that be the compromise over the fringing and flashy text.

      I was on the fence about QD vs W for the same reasons, leaning towards QD, but the fringing had me hesitating. I think your comment might have just made the decision for me. If only there was a glossy 32" 4k W-OLED...

    Thank you so much for helping me decide. After going to the computer store to see QD and WOLED side by side, I really could tell that the WOLED was much easier on the eyes especially in a bright room. I wanted to like the glossy QD since I also don't like matte screens, but your video made me feel confident in my choice to go WOLED with the LG.

      Did you not think to just get blackout curtains for your PC room? And then you can turn off ambient lights…

    • @IcarusMK22
      @IcarusMK22 Месяц назад +1

      @RiceCubeTech Since my PC room is also my home office, I have blinds to block the direct sun but not blackout curtains because it would be strange when I have clients over. Also I have a really long bay window with books and things on the shelf.
      But on second thought I bet the QDOLED would be just fine in my office compared to the bright computer store. I did notice the purplish-gray tint in the store compared to deeper blacks on the WOLED, but that didn't bother me as much as the reflections. It was hard for my eyes to focus.

    • @RiceCubeTech
      @RiceCubeTech Месяц назад

      @@IcarusMK22 for my black out curtains I literally just have a pinup that can be removed when I just want my normal blinds. They just cover the existing blinds when I need complete darkness.

    • @RiceCubeTech
      @RiceCubeTech Месяц назад +1

      @@IcarusMK22 as long as it’s not direct light shining on the display they’re not too bad. If there’s a lot of ambient light you’ll notice but black out curtains or just making sure the ambient light is not shining on the display itself should fix it.
      Then you can enjoy the superior color on QD OLED. But you’ll still have to worry about the eh pixel layout. If your eyes aren’t too sensitive to that it shouldn’t be a big deal

    I mean, hard to compare but in most scenes the WOLED seems to either be better tuned or have the better picture. PS: In general, the content on the WOLED looks sharper (less blurry), and more details are visible, but that might be related to how they get shipped and their default settings? I find this very noticeable in the scenes of 7:31+. Specially in the stills, when video is paused. At ~7:41 the water and waterfall, and distant rocks, or vegitation all look really bad on the QD.

    exactly what you said Sean, I also noticed same eye issues on my QD-Oled monitor shortly after coming from an asus ips monitor, I've never used optical glasses in my life and my eye sight is still pretty sharp at age 40. and it seems to me the more I use the qd-monitor, my eyes are getting worse I can feel it. It came to a point I thought something was wrong with my health, sour eyes could mean you are getting optical or diabeties and what not. I had the AW3423DWF for a while and the fringing never bothered me visually. I thought it looked fine. But about once a week I would end a workday with a massive migraine and dry eyes (I never struggled with either before then). I did research and thought it was OLED flicker that caused it, but I think it's actually the purple QD hue and the fringing that caused me a lot of issues.

    Love your videos! I recently picked up a Alienware AW3225QF. 32 inch qd-oled glossy with a slight curve. Haven't noticed any fringing and I'm going to do my best to not look for it now haha. The slight curve helps a surprising amount to reduce reflections and I like how it pulls the edges of the large 32 inches in just a bit. I do have a monitor light bar and that bleeds onto the top of the screen but it's easy enough to turn off if I want the best colors.
    My only real complaint is the horrible VRR flicker that is so common to OLED panels. I've been having to turn off G sync and set my refresh rate to 60hz to make silent hill 2 playable and not a flickering mess.

    what's your thought on the new Samsung G80SD? It's a QD-OLED with anti-glare coating so I wonder if the text fringing still persists. I also wonder if the purple tint is still visible on it when in bright environment because I always sit in bright room, whether it's natural or downlights.

      I just returned it. It doesn't really have the purple tint, but it looks dirty and hazy despite people saying the contrary about the coating. It's also not very bright for being a top tier monitor. I'm much happier with a 42" OLED tv as a monitor.

    EXC review very honest. My next buy is LG again to substitution for my IPS BLACK ultrafine 32. I recommend buy a calibrite HDR colorimeter to use LG Calibration Studio to see the difference when you use this tool, for better color mode, use 3D LUT format, V4, precise mode, take time but is accurate and work perfect in my Ultrafine

    Thank you for this video. I looked it up after I got an MSI qd oled and found the eye strain to be very disturbing. I saw the fringing but it didn’t bother me but i think it must have affected me anyway. Discomfort in my eye that I haven’t experienced before. Maybe not having so young eyes (they are 40 years after all) is a reason? Who knows. I got an asus strix woled instead and that monitor works just fine. But I must admit the color was noticeable better on the qr oled, but it doesn’t matter if you can’t look at it. :) Thanks!

    Hey Sean! I do notice my eyes get fatigued more for longer gaming sessions on my Alienware AW2725DF QD-OLED than any of my IPS or VA displays. I don't do any productivity work on my OLEDs due to fear of burn in, but haven't noticed extreme text fringing, even on my 1440p panel - I'd expect 4K to lessen some of that but apparently you can notice it there too.
    Do you think these OLED monitors get bright enough in SDR at ~250 nits? I don't like to use mine in brighter environments without HDR.
    Also, how is Auto HDR working for you on these for non-native HDR games? Are you using RTX HDR?

    • @TechWithSean
      @TechWithSean  2 месяца назад +1

      I think they’re totally useable in SDR unless you are in an unusually bright room. Auto HDR works good for me, don’t really mess with RTX HDR. It’s definitely more noticeable in some games, stuff like Dragon Quest XI, Rocket League and Fortnite that are super colorful have noticeably more pop to them, but in games with more subdued color palettes like Skyrim it isn’t as noticeable.

    Thanks for bringing up the topic of colour fringing. Note, however, that a WOLED display is not ideal at all for text clarity due to the non-standard RGB & W subpixel layout. You'd be better off with a panel that uses RGB only in a standard layout (unlike QD OLED which uses a non-standard layout).

Swapped my 21:9 Philips Evnia for 32” 4K LG and I couldn’t be happier. Natural colours, great blacks and absolutely no issues with purple blacks during day, also can play in well lighted room, which is better for my eyes.
