- Just a couple of topics for this episode of ModChat, but we're going big with a throwback to the original Xbox having a true breakthrough entrypoint in the form of the appropriately named ENDGAME. This works on all stock Dashboards, kernels, and can be launched directly from the Dashboard using only a storage device. No hotswapping, soldering, teardowns, or games needed! Show and tell is prevalent this episode as we walk through a setup of ENDGAME on a stock Xbox and show what it can be capable of. We also see a pretty awesome announcement showing the PlayStation Portal is now running Android apps natively. Finally, as a fun mod to cover, and old Fallout: New Vegas mod has been recovered which might have you rollin', rollin', rollin', rollin' with joy.

weird xbox modding tip: an old PSP put into usb storage mode works as a compatible drive. i had to use that when all my other flash drives were too modern.
Thanks for the tip. My cousin just gave me his old xbox and after I'm done cleaning it, I'll soft mod it.

You can connect your OG controller to your PC with an adapter and read the memory card and add the exploit files from there. This is how we used to softmod back in the day! We had to crack open our dongles and graft a USB end to the connector cause premade adapters weren't a thing then...
...or, you could. I haven't connected an OG controller to a PC in over a decade, so ymmv lol

@@ceninant Yep yep, though back then windows didn't have a native driver for the controller (XBCD FTW). IIRC the memory card bus acted as a usb hub and didn't need a driver

@@MrMario2011 nah I meant the breakaway part of the controller cable with the connector. You just open the casing, pull off the connector shield and then solder a male USB pigtail to the pads of the Xbox connector, matching the colors/pinout. Then just cut a notch in the connector casing and reassemble.
I made my first dongle from one of those weird apple puck mice from an iMac lol. Good times!
@@Sun-ut9gr I also still have one of those self Crafted adapters. Commercial adapters already existed when I started softmodding, but I made my own one out of a broken controller as I really didn't want to wait (that's still 10 years ago which makes me feel so old).

To anyone not wanting to buy a cheap USB fashdrive you can use a PSP lol, just make sure it's formatted by the xbox and your memory stick is empty. Or if swiveling scares ya it's a good option too!

Awesome! I've had an unmodded Xbox with a gutted disc drive sitting around for a while now. This would be perfect for giving it a second life with a new hard drive.
My first soft modded OG Xbox was done with a modded connector and a 512mb usb drive. It was flakie as hell, but was cool. It swivelled between working and not working. LOL Another great vid Mario.
That's how I did my second one! Using line connectors and wires I burned with a lighter 🤣
Man I didn’t realize how handy it would be to keep a swivel USB drive around, I think my smallest may be 2 or 4GB sticks.

I seriously miss the days of using physical memory cards. I've actually create a big bot/program that will automatically back up all my pc game saves and stores them on multiple cloud drives, it runs once every 24 hours just to be safe lol. It's fully functioning and works great atm, but now im just slowly having fun with it and going to make a fancy/pretty gui to use and stuff lol.
The OG Xbox has a warm, swivelin' place in my heart, and I love the fact that the modding community is still working on it. Recently the monster hard drive capability, and now a no-optical softmod (Soon).
The talent still in the community and coming out is huge!

Always keep a swivel USB in an old SmartXX Usb adaptor (The fancy one that looks like an original controller plug) in my Xbox toolkit. Heck, both were on my desk before watching this video.

That's awesome to see! Softmodding and og Xbox might now become as easy as softmodding a ps2.

I happened to get a swivel USB from a company that for free offered to backup my voicemails on my phone. I think Verizon contracted with them at some point in the early to mid aughts, but it was wild b/c that was like one of the only drives that work for my softmodded OG Xboxs, until my junior college gave me some more of the same swivel drives, but they were too big at 4GB. Love swivel drives, cheap and fantastic!

They sold usb to memory card adapter as well with action replay type programs for the og xbox. I lost the AR disk but kept the adapter it has always been my go to for og xboxes

When i modded my og xbox, i went through 7 usb drives! Yes, 7!! It is so picky, and the 1 usb drive that worked eventually, was the usb memory from a "007 James Bond Spy Pen" (it was advertised like this) that i got from a friend for very cheap, it had a section you could unscrew, and it contained a short, stubby 1gb usb drive, it worked! I was stunned! Of all the usb drives i have, this is the one that ended up working!
That's hilarious, the most fitting use was then if you used Agent Under Fire
it would be cool to see a soft nod for the 360 or atleast more cool things with it

I use a 2gb micro SD card and gameshark USB adapter on the OG Xbox.
When I originally modded my xbox I tried a swivel USB and it didn't work. I ended up using another disk.
I have a memory card with the gamesave on it and a copy of mechassault
The SWIVEL drive is a no go for me broski. THX for news & THX for the FNV mod, definitely gonna give that a go on a new save.
Here is the thing, if usb-c data transfer or otg can be enabled on the psportal: it might be worth slightly more than being a gimmick. Lets say aforementioned of what I said is feasible, with some basic soldering you could mod an sdcard into the psportal. If the price came down on the psportal, it might be a niche.
That's what I'm hoping for!

Just wondering if this exploit needs hardware media to run or if a drive can be connected with a catalog of .xbe files.

I was just thinking about getting a portal the other day, guess I should lol. I have a fully hard modded 360 with 12 TB of storage, so the Endgame thing doesn't interest me much, but cool to hear :)

I swiveled around and read up the docs for ENDGAME as soon as I heard the news the other day. Great job to the devs, XBOX modding has finally gotten to the point where anyone with a brain cell can do it!
Neat that the PSPortal as been hacked, but with 6GBs of storage might as well be useless unless someone finds a way to maybe BGA solder more storage or something. And even then why?
I do have a couple of those swivel drives but not sure if I like them that much and sadly none of which I had worked on an og xbox 😅 ended up rooting an old Android phone and using it to emulate an Xbox memory card. Yes. There exist or at least used to exist and android app for that. Unfortunately required root though so not very convenient for most people.
i managed to set this up with insignia setup and alt dashes already, including resigning the rocky5 softmod to run on it, works fine with no issue
edit: probably worth clarifying that i went about it myself, no one had posted anything yet and i wanted to see what i could get it to do, its feasible to run the system as idf it were modded while remaining stock, not thats i suggest it since you need to manually resign everything

Lower capacity USB drives isn't always the answer. Probably the easiest way to explain it though. Last year I soft modded my original xbox I got in 2005. I was thinking some 2gb drives I had would work. That are old PNY drives. However actually a 4gb sandisk cruiser was the only one I could get to show up. Just to note, those where drives I had laying around. Figured I'd try them all before buying some lower capacity ones like you recommend.
For sure, I've also had some drives just not work on certain consoles but work on others.

I made a PCB with an extra flash chip, re-wired Chip_Enable and Write_Enable to toggle-switches, and mounted it parallel with the existing xbox flash memory.
1 had stock ROM, the other was for other fun stuff. Ah, back in the beginning when just the .bin file was released.
Later I mounted an original SmartXX LPC modchip - so I guess my old (still working) XBOX could be called 'The Extreme Ultimate OG Xbox' if I install ENDGAME ;ø)

I'm talking about the 29F080 flash chip.
40 pin TSOP, on a self-designed PCB - with pads, that were then wired up and soldered onto the original chip.
It was a bit of work, as they had to be programmed (didn't have an adapter, so I made another TSOP-DIL PCB), but always a pleasure when: Booop, Whooop, Whirrr - Green blob :ø)
Did a number of those, then moved onto LPC's, as they were much easier.
Kind of the first PS2 modchips, especially on V3's. Ah, memories!

Well, I had one come back - a small solder ball had decided to jump in between two pins on the 29F080 in transit, shorting it. When removed with a tweezer, it booted right up.

Wouldn't be ideal for Xbox, and we don't know for the Portal.
I remember the first time I wanted to use a save game exploit on my Xbox so many years ago. I built my own USB adapter using a spare Xbox controller breakout cable I bought used from GameStop and spliced in a female USB cable from a USB extension cable. Ah good times. Also I still have a 128MB USB Flash Drive I got as a pre-order bonus for Singularity from GameStop.
That's how I built my first one! Awful quality, took 2 attempts at the build, but at least it worked?

When ever I need a crapy USB drive for hacking stuff I used the swivel drive a collage gave out for free might grab some more so I don't need to keep refromating it

What blows my mind is how not all xbox 360's can be hacked and the ones that can have to be hardmodded and yet Sony's latest console and even their useless streaming handheld can be softmodded.
Oh boy, I can't wait to buy a preloaded USB drive rather than buy a license for a file manager of questionable legality.
only thing ill add about those small cheap usb drives is hopefully something that doesnt need to be said.. dont use them for anything important they are cheap and crappy for a reason lol. good for modding but for anything important i wouldnt trust them.
Exactly! I will trust them with original Xbox game. Saves for a mod like this, but that's about it.
@@MrMario2011 we use them at work all the time for transferring programs from pc to the CNC machines, like the reasons stated before they sometimes break.. and if you drop them step on them then its a couple bucks for a replacement off of amazon.. and i think you can get 50 of them for 100$ or something so its not the end of the world

I pray for a softmod for the xbox 360, this new Endgame exploit is a step in the right direction.
It's a step in a completely different direction that in no way has anything to do with the 360.
The Xbox 360 already had a save game exploit early in its life that was quickly patched.

Unfortunately I doubt we will ever see any form of softmod for the Xbox 360 to run unsigned code unless another Hypervisor exploit is discovered. Although believe me, I would absolutely love to be proven wrong.

PlayStation portal still seems pointless to me you only have six gigs of onboard storage How much of that's already being used up by the OS and all the emulators is the real question you have like what 4 gigs of space for games unless you're just playing NES s NES and Genesis games This device is it's still pointless.
Here's to hoping expandable storage options come about!
