This is my absolute favorite console...I wish we had something similar happen with a modern console. I don't know if that OG xbox scene can ever truly be experienced again. When the floodgates blew open on this thing, it was like nothing seen before. I'm so happy to see that development has continued over the years on this little guy and that there have been a lot of really cool developments since then. Don't forget to remove your clock caps everyone! If you see an Xbox in the wild that hasn't been opened, snatch it up - if only to crack it open to remove that damn cap! Thank you for the video, the XBMC-Emustation downloader error is due to you building the source and being in the US. I have fixed this as of 5 mins ago, so there should be no issues building the source and the versioning being done correctly.
Yah, 3DS softmodding is kind of weird. It used to be easier to do. Just required an SD card but now you need DS flashcarts and stuff to do it on newer firmwares. Glad I did mine before I needed to bother with any of that crap.
I can't explain what's so fun about these old Xboxes. I still mess around with mine from time to time. Installed an SSD a couple months ago, and I can attest to the still-active community - they were there for me when I ran into some noobie problems. Great video as always.
Loved that machine! In 2005 I couldn't afford to build a HTPC, but the XBOX was just $150. I have owned many over the years. Eventually the slow ethernet speeds made me say goodbye, but it warms my heart to know that folks are still getting what they can out of this machine.
OG xbox is still my favourite modded console of all time. It just feels so good. Wii is pretty good too, you can get a wii with a broken disc drive and make it work ( with iso on usb) with just an sd card. I technically got mine and modded it for free using an sd card from an old camera.
After owning an Xbox and having it chipped when I was living overseas, and using it to this day without ever going through any challenges... I finally picked up a spare and Softmodded it following your tips. While there were some hiccups, it works like a charm! Thanks, now I just need to replace the HDD and the fan and it will be better than ever! Thanks, I really enjoy your videos!
Overseas ya say? This is a silly question, but once you mod the og Xbox in the same way that MVG did in the video, will it make your Xbox able to play other region games?
@@GoodlyPenguin good question... I only have 'backups' of out-of-region titles... I'm not sure if they were unlocked in the rom stage or not, but to my knowledge softmodding does remove region restrictions....
@@bobspence5322 it depends on what you're doing. A chimp could do the 5s soft mod on an OG box. Hard drive upgrades and mod chip soldering are a whole different deal. If you're willing to invest the time it's very rewarding, but if you just after the end product, then yeah Etsy consolemods.co is the way to go.
Found a £25 one in a pawn shop the other day and couldn't resist. Still got some games on the shelf from my old one and sorely tempted to give this a try at some point.
Coupla things I just gotta say: I was watching what the tech community did to help out Austin when his house burnt down, and you stepped up, and gave him a lil heads-up he was appreciated. Everything you guys did brought a manly tear to my eye. Second of it, I got 5 of these original XBoxes, mostly working, so any help in a soft-mod direction would be great, since the modchip scene seems to have died. And Austin was SO overwhelmed. What you guys did was LEGENDARY :)
i had a friend mod his in 2002.. i had no idea how! by now i mean anyone can but he had own band songs pics all loaded into the song lists everything custom just to play tony hawk.. lol was the beginnings of ... well looking back now that poor boy.. naive son of a bitch drown in his own phlegm and puke before age 30.
Still using mine for that very purpose! I bought mine back in 2002 and am still using it on a regular basis (play old games, play emulators, watch movies (from network, files on HDD and DVD). I did bought the infrared remote back then and always used the unit as DVD player (still am). I've installed the biggest IDE HDD I could find back then, that was a 250GB. Also, I have the fancy A/V module with 5:1 digital sound output which is still plugged in my old audio system. Although the raw capabilities are a world appart with it's successor, I can do so much with that original Xbox and so little with the Xbox 360 I also have. Yes, you can run Linux on that original Xbox, but 64MB RAM is kind of thight. For that matter any Rasberry Pi will be a better choice. As an emulator, what probably makes this a good system: you have pretty descent and robust controllers compared to all of those 50$-100$ retro minis. Biggest drawback would be power consumption, a bit of fan noise. I'm not going to mention the 4K issue since it's not really an issue as a an 8/16 bit emulator. I find amazing that I'm still using a 18 year old computer system on a regular basis. How many electronic products you have now will pass the 15 years mark? That's a testament to the build quality on the product, thanks Microsoft. Let's not forget about the homebrew community, without them I would have sold my unit long time ago.
Absolutely true. I've had one for 10 years plus. Fully loaded with classic console and arcade games. No HDMI, but looks great using component cable. I still like it best overall..better than raspberry pie
Just like the Commodore 64... The Computer system that wont die. I am a C64 kid, grew up playing on it , and I see games in 2021 being developed by Home Brewers. It makes me really love that system. I still have my old C64 and I kept it in pristine condition to this day :)
I'm only guessing but the reason why it performs so well despite being so old, is due to the fact it has a dedicated GPU that handles a lot that the CPU couldn't pull off by itself.
surely the best thing about having an xbox for emulation here in the UK is that you can have RGB scart on a CRT giving you a very nice arcade setup with those lovely scan lines :)
Sadly, there is no way for an OG Xbox to output a 240p video signal :/ You are limited to 480i with a scart so you can't play at native resolutions wih scanlines with emulators.
saly sysy ah that’s too bad, back in the day when I had a chipped Xbox I ran all the emulators and used a crt here in the UK it never occurred to me that it wasn’t the correct picture type etc, it’s only now I strive for that scanline look with crt etc, funny how we get hung up on image reproduction and forget to play the games haha, I’ll stick to getting a pi set up with scart then :)
@@JayRKID The best for 240p emulation is the Wii! Forget the Pi, it sucks, laggy crap. The Wii is almost lagless, and I would say 100% lag free when using a CRT, it is an amazing machine for 8 and 16 bit emulation.
nashismox3 oh really, that’s interesting, I have a wii set up with some hombrew but I do find it fiddly getting into emulators and having to use the wiimote is a choir, but will give it a propper look thanks
$8 🤷♂️, I switched the sticker prices lol. I honestly bought a original xbox and xbox 360 for dirt cheap at the thrift store. I already had a modded original xbox that had a bad DVD 📀 drive that couldn't read cds but can play isos from the 500 gb hard drive. So I got someone to swap disc drives for me and now it can read cds. 500 gb is not enough space but honestly original xbox only had a handful of games that were the absolute best that I enjoyed, so good enough for me.

@@formerlycringe I hear that, the last time I saw an OG Xbox at my local GoodWill with no cables, and really piss poor condition(looked like it had went threw a mug bath) they wanted $30 USD for it. I was like na not taking a chance on that, another time they had a big clear plastic tub full of random Nintendo Wii stuff(maybe a console with it, could not tell) and duck tape all around it with a marker label of $220 USD, and they now want $5 for common as dirt scratched to hell PS 2 games. All from the same location, I'm like WTF?!?!
@@formerlycringe Same here (for PS2 as well); also, it's slightly more than the stated $10 unless that usb->xbox adapter was included. The raspberry pi also is substantially faster. Retroarch on XBox (ruclips.net/video/fnwc7afBtIw/видео.html) could be better, as well as the other emulators (GBA emulator can't maintain 60 fps in even games like Metroid: Zero Mission). Now, if you want to play XBox games.. :) Definitely, Xbox with component looks great. A shame more games didn't support 720p. From that perspective, all the emulators that do work well are an added bonus. I'd go for a raspberry pi, a used pc, or a lot of other options though if emulation were the real focus.
The original xbox is my favorite system of all time. I loved the one I had and I wish I still had it. I had music on it and played my games. I never got mine modded but I did think about getting it done. Back then it wasn't as easy as it is now though.
I know this is 10 months late. But how did the 1tb HDD work on the Xbox? I know the HDD that came with the Xbox went with the MoBo. So modding that HAD to be fun. Hopefully all went well.
I remember doing this year back, I put in a 500gb hdd and installed coin ops which took ages to install because of the size. It was quality as I made my own USB cable for the initial softmod. I felt like I was on top of the world lol After it all installed I just was so amazed that everything ran flawless
I remember doing this very thing and then I decided to put a larger HD in my XBOX. That was a chore! You have to manage to unlock the original drive, copy files, use a special DVD to format the new drive, copy files to it and then lock the new drive. It was something like that but now I have 512 GB and tons of Emulation plus games. I now have thousands of games I can play, many I enjoyed as a kid and can no longer play as easily since the arcades aren't around. Plus my parents sold all my gaming consoles or my older brother stole them for his kids and then they sold them at a garage sale. I bout everyone of them with my money! No I'm obsessed with turning every console I still have or have purchased into emulation stations. I'm now working on a small form factor attached to the back of one of my monitors. Botocera is awesome! Thanks for the video!
I've got both. I would say the Wii is more user friendly (especially if like me, you lack the skills to really know what you're doing) but the Xbox is more powerful and I think the controller situation is better.
@@ReetinEntertainment depends on the country though. Brazil and Argentina are fucked. Colombia is a lot more friendly with tech exports, and although videogames have a 20% tax over its value, you can simply say it's a computer and pay no taxes. Shipping will probably be like 25 dollars or so due to the weight, if you get a fully functional xbox for 10-15 bucks, its still a nice deal.
I have used an Xbox for years. I was using it to watch movies using XBMC, to play original games and emulators. It's indeed still a fantastic retrogaming console and maybe the only one i'd keep. Found one for 5€ on a flea market, put a 500 gb HD + an aladdin chip inside. I don't need anything more to be happy :)
This is a very good console and emulation rocks on it. My main usage for it was xbmc although. But it's nowhere near to be seen for $10 here in Belgium. Prices vary from $30 to $50. Sometimes more.
This brings back memories. I don't remember how I obtained the run Linux mech assault Linux hack. But I had it on a regular xbox memory card. I used to charge $30 to soft mod an Xbox. I install evolution x dashboard I believe it was called. I gave the owner whatever "options" he wanted as long as it would fit in the left over 4.x GB room left. My own Xbox had a chameleon chip and a 160gb hdd. That thing was a work horse. The chip finally gave out 2-3 years ago. Those were the days!
Along time ago hard modded my Xbox with a 1tb HDD installed! The emulation is really solid for sure! Xbox or a retropie setup will be the best bet for a nice emu station! Nice vid!
I used to have a Sega and an XBOX and lately bought an 007 DVD box. It's so cool that you can do all that on an XBOX and I've actually replaced the harddrive and hardmodded it. It's basically the best DVD player which can also run games, yes it's chunky but I love the crystal look of my xbox.
Great video buddy I have 5 original xboxes I followed your video and it works awesome my buddy owns a used game store and has over a hundred original xboxes so now he's doing it and selling the for more money we both thank you for the help keep up the great videos 💯👍
I'm looking for some quality 3rd party original Xbox controllers. It's impossible to find brand new ones of Microsoft brand unless people are willing to pay $100+ from someone on Ebay.
Just needs a quick ass kicking by the Iceberg himself. "You're nothing but a punk, your daddy's a punk, and your momma's a bitch." And whaddya know, that did release on XBox!
I have owned and played the Xbox 360 and the One but never owned or played the Original Xbox. I found one the other day with a controller, power cord, and when I turned it on for the first time the console had a copy of Star Wars Battlefront II disc in the drive, all for $25 at a Goodwill. I had to order new component cables as I was unable to find any at the Goodwill it was at, I paid for $8 for them on Amazon. While I waited for them, I took the console apart to the board and cleaned it out and it was dusty as hell, it was so easy to take apart to be honest. I assembled it all together and waited till I got the cables, once I got them in the mail I hooked it all up and test it again and it worked like a clock! The only thing wrong with it is the DVD drive sticks but I have to replace the band on the gear that opens it which is pretty easy to fix and cheap. This console was built on August 23, 2003 according to the casing of the Xbox and for almost 18 years old it looks good! Now the only things left are to soft mod it, get the DVD expansion for it so I can play my DVD’s, build a game library for it, and try to get XLink on it or insignia’s software when it gets released. But I can’t wait to start playing it along side my PS1 & PS2.

Although it costs a fair amount more the nvidia shield is an amazing emulator box as well and media box. I have been nothing but impressed with both of mine.
THANK you so much for this, its june 2021 right now and i just modded a 1.6 XBOX using your video!, the only thing is with my 1.6 i had to change 5 capacitors by the power input to the motherboard, but i hear its a fault on the rev 1.6 boards and the way it was stored, i got mine out of a basement when helping someone move, they found it too bulky to take to their new place and just gave me the system, had to spend about 10 bucks on solder and new capacitors and 5 bucks on a copy of splinter cell, but still a great find, i have never had an XBOX before but i love it!
The first homebrew game on Atari 2600 was released in 1995, before DC was even announced. Not to mention the fact that the Dreamcast was much less popular than similar homebrew consoles at the time like the PSP.
@Wandy Wexler Weslon lol. Dreamcast is underated. Yes you heard this before but of course you won't agree I really mean it is when I say it. Also it's so sad that this system plays all games at 60 fps and many others after that can't keep it stable as that.
It's funny like how the Xbox bridged an emulation gap of two generations way before we thought that was even possible. Correct me if I'm wrong, but back then it used to be that if you were expecting to emulate something, you'd have to wait for the consoles to jump two generations so that they could be powerful enough to emulate what you were trying. Seeing an Xbox OG emulate PS1 and Nintendo 64 is still wizardry to me to this day.
For those who are copying over the XBMC folder and cannot find ".emulators " folder. In WinSCP, go to Options->Preferences->Panels->Show hidden files and select ok
Damn I remember when a friend and I modded an xbox like 15 years ago, we had to take out hard drive and connect another hard drive and a bunch of crazy shit. But we pretty much have every game ever for every system
pretty sure thats how I am going to have to do it since I can't find a usb drive it will read, but I also don't have a PC running on old enough hardware to hot swap IDE cables, could I maybe use a adapter to hot swap?
I'd say the Wii is the king. It's easier to mod, smaller form factor, cheaper and more readily available. Plus you get the bonus of native Gamecube support.
@@MrSGL21 there is a lightgun accessory that allows you to hold the wiimote like a gun. It's not as good as the real thing though. I guess if lightgun games are your thing, an xbox probably is the better choice (although you'll need a CRT TV to go with it - not ideal)
@@Mothgoth1 nope. i think the Wii struggles a bit with PS1 emulation so anything above that is likely to be a problem (with the exception of Gamecube and the N64 games covered by the virtual console). The first game they ever internally demoed on the original Xbox prototype circa 1999 was Tomb Raider running on the Bleem! emulator. The Xbox was born for emulation.

It shouldn't have really improved the speed of the hard drive. The problem is that the IDE connection limits at around 144 mbps (or something around there) so, you aren't going to see much of a speed increase. Now, if you had a Solid State drive you still might not notice a huge difference but, some load times might improve.
@@ReetinEntertainment Speed is probably not what they meant by improved. The process to convert an Xbox to use a SATA drive is a hassle and a half. Yet it is the right way to go since IDE drives are all obsolete now. And the answer is, no. The process is still the same and not improved at all.
I think the fact it has a mass market CPU and mass market GPU(some type of Geforce) are why it does so well even if it seems a bit old specs. Xbox was basically a PC meaning the people making these programs are coding for x86 and not any sort of unusual custom CPU like one might find in other consoles.
The Xbox was the most powerful piece of of hardware at the time. It's kind of sad Microsoft hasn't followed that trend unless you count the Xbox One X.
I don't even have to go more than a minute into your video to decide that I'm gonna upvote it. Xbox is the shit when it comes to emulation plus as you mentioned all the exclusive games. I still have mine since 2005. Still use it.

Oh my good god I've finally joined the modded xbox scene after nearly 18 years of wanting in. If it wasn't for the current global shortage of chips I'd have a bloomin open xenium modchip because I want to build program & flash it myself, although everything so far has been a bit of a steep learning curve as I've been out of the tech world for almost a decade now, jesus I didn't realise how hard stuff could be to re-learn, all of my coding from my college days, seems so much harder to get my head around now. But you know, your content has helped me out a lot even if it doesn't touch to heavily on technicalities. But it really is because of your chanel that I've even taken these steps, honestly I don't know why I didn't do this years ago, or even when the pandemic just shut everything down, I mean it was saving old N64 & gameboy game saves with those darnded battery powered saves that prompted me into this tech scene, but that all lead me here & to MrMario & JCRocky5. I also happen to have 2 other consoles with dead hard drives so as soon as I have these modchips put together & functioning I'll be replacing them & possibly turning 1 of them into a Debug or Dev console, although I'm not even sure at this point if the Developer console is possible, or if there's even a difference in their Bios or Dashboards. Anyway, cheeres for doing all your videos on the technical sides of so many devices, even if most of it's way over my head, I still really enjoy seeing into their undersides
Holy jizz that XBMC is an absolute beast, I did not expect to find such a profesional feeling system from the homebrew scene, this is really wierd, plaing Quake 3 on an xbox, feels so odd, I mean, as soon as I spotted it in the list, I only ever played it on the dreamcast, loved the fast paced gorefest it was, I haven't touched that game in nearly 15 years.

It's really not hard to softmod. Hdd upgrades are a bit more tricky, but totally worth it.
dont waste the time. i made one and it sucked. i bought one on etsy and it rocked. it takes way more than theyre saying.
I remmeber doing this back in high school and customizing the music, sound fx and background... Great console though

@@formerlycringe Same here (for PS2 as well); also, it's slightly more than the stated $10 unless that usb->xbox adapter was included. The raspberry pi also is substantially faster. Now, if you want to play XBox games.. :) Definitely, Xbox with component looks great. A shame more games didn't support 720p. I know this is 10 months late. But how did the 1tb HDD work on the Xbox? I know the HDD that came with the Xbox went with the MoBo. So modding that HAD to be fun. Hopefully all went well.

After it all installed I just was so amazed that everything ran flawless
Thank you for the great tutorial, I am now playing classic games on my OG XBOX.
I wish companies wouldn't abandon older consoles. Imagine what would be possible if the actual developers worked with the homebrew guys.

The dreamcast started the homebrew revolution***
S Grajeda i think revolution implies people used it
The first homebrew game on Atari 2600 was released in 1995, before DC was even announced. Not to mention the fact that the Dreamcast was much less popular than similar homebrew consoles at the time like the PSP.
the gitsy xbox is the mother of the modern day modding community due to its internal hdd system.
Dreamcast and xbox the real og kings!

@@MrSGL21 there is a lightgun accessory that allows you to hold the wiimote like a gun. It's not as good as the real thing though. I guess if lightgun games are your thing, an xbox probably is the better choice (although you'll need a CRT TV to go with it - not ideal)

Wow very cool mod, looks like it takes some time. I first played Halo on a friends Xbox in 2001 so i have good fond memories with the system.
i used ndure with hdd decrypt over *hotswapping* the ide. After that, i cloned my 8gb hdd to an 250gb. The classic xbox costs 50$ in eu.
Just seen a crystal one go for 15 euros

@@riekoche ahahha I bought mine for that exact price in Turkey... it was a lucky find and waay below the second hand market value
Great vid, as always!! Could you make a video on how to replace the OG Xbox's HD with a SSD ? And have it be more silent, in general ?
I’m sure you’ve already seen this vid by now, I just thought it was funny that this vid addressed your two questions specifically

This was the console that made me quit pc gaming. Endless possibilities, mods, homebrew, xbmc... just loved it. As an electronics enthausiast, I still get ram upgrade requests to date. I (still) just love to mod these.
HOW MUCH TO MOD ONE FOR ME?
Thankyou soo much. this front end was the missing link to my random emulator installs now it can look pro!

Just did a complete re-cap of 1.4 and 1.6 motherboards. The 1.6 boards tend to not power on at all with bad caps. The 1.4 boards will have all kinds of video issues. If you plan to buy and use a Pound cable with your Xbox I recommend a re-cap for best results.
