You should know that the last TT of a grand tour isn't the same as the ones in the first 10 days. It's all about how you arrive at the third week. It's seen 8n every single Giro or Tour. Even Chiappucci was capable to lose only a couple of minutes from Indurain in the last TT when he could lose 5 in the first one... You just love to title your videos 'DOPED' without really analysing cycling.

    • @cyclingstories

Yes. Pondenzana and Velo arrived very well.
Tonkov, who won 2 days after and been second one day earlier arrived very bad.
      That's a very good analysis.

Tonkov arrived second in Montecampione destroyed by Pantani. If there were 2 more kms he would have lost 5 minutes. A question for you, Was Tonkov doped? If so, why don't you make videos on less known doped cyclists as we all know that everyone was doped back then? As said Chiappucci used to lose much more time in the first TT. He's only an example. In the most clean TdF of the history, 1998, and it's not sarcasm, Pantani only lost just over 2 minutes in the last TT comparing to the 5 minutes in the second TT and arriving 3rd last in the prologue.

On an editorial note: While "mercatone" means "market" in Italian, it's still pronounced "mer-ca-toh-ne", not "market-oh-ne", and "GL" in Italian works like "LY" in English, so it's "mah-lyah rosa", not "mag-lee-ah rosa".

It is not inefficient in the purely aerodynamic sense, but it is uncomfortable because you put a lot of stress on your back, glutes an rear thigh muscles. You also cannot pedal along and therefore have to give up the position in corners to lift the inside pedal and it makes the bike hard to maneuver, since your arms are all stretched out. The latter two are why that position is so dangerous. After a near-crash I gave up using it, and most pros obviously for the very same reasons.

You desperately look for scandal without knowing anything of the sport. During late 90's all cyclists were doped with epo, it's not a secret, just check the performance they had on famous climbs, some records, like the alpe d'huez climb are still unbeaten after 25 yrs .

With all due respect, it's easy to trash talk a dead man. I've done more than my fair share of reading and investigating to still believe Marco was murdered for not "throwing" the race in '99. As an avid follower of mafia history I can clearly see a mob payback in his death. Marco was made a cycling god by the cycling world, then came the Armstrong era and the forced downfall of a legend who perhaps didn't play according to mob rules . . . If there was any real proof of his doping he'd be stripped of his tour win and most of his KOM records. Most pro cyclists have extraordinary physical attributes, like lung capacity, resting heart rate etc etc.

Pantani's name appearing in some scaly doctors papers to me doesn't prove that he doped, which perhaps he did, but why wasn't he DQ'd and his win and records removed like they did to Lance? I believe that ALL pro sportsman "dope" in some way or another, whether it be by taking epo or salbutamol (which Froome had a doctors prescription for, but perhaps abused a little) because of the amount of money involved. Speaking about Pantani's death one must be open to discuss the theory that he was set-up and then possibly murdered because it would change the whole narrative of being a drug addict who couldn't handle pressure or losing . . .

It s a pity you dont know much about Cycling...!
    1) Marco Velo is. a several times Italian tt Champion, and he game so many top exhibitions on tt during his career that i cannot believe you dont know
    2) Pantani was full of Epo, but tonkov was as well, and Zulle probably even more, so the point is: in the mountain Pantani should destroy them, being one of the best climbers ever (but this Is something you dont know, for you think that pantani's performances are comparable to riis' or armatrong's), but in the tt he shouldnt go fast: well...as everybody know in the last week cyclists Who are "fondisti" come out, and the way they recharege their body energy one day after the other is decisive. You have plenty of examples like this in the entire history of cycling. But I bet you are a youngster... Still you should know this...!
    3) youre taking examples of Mercatone Uno's cyclists during the tt to show they were all doped.... But gregari shoud dope every stage but the tt if they are smart, for in the tt they are useless to the captain!
    4) if you decide to ignote that in the last daya of a Grand Tour the most important thing is "fondo" and the recharging of energies (in which Pantani was number one, no matter what), you still have to explain why tonkov and otherswent only that fast, because we all know some of them were massively doped, tonkov being the first, working for a mapei team which had museeuw and others, and which did some astonishing exhibitions mostly at Roubaix...
So why didnt tonkov go faster than Pantani...?!? Wasnt him doped till his eyeballs?!?

      Oh yes...
      1) 3 Times. In 2000 against Daniele Contrini (xD), In 1999 to the SAME FORCONI of this vid with hematocrit high and teammate. In 1998, againts the amazing Gianluca Sironi. It's like he won against Filippo Ganna, right? Laughable.
      2) We didn't said "Anyone is doped but Pantani yes". No. We know a lot of pro riders were in the juice, of course, we talked about Zulle 7 days before this vid for example.
We could compare performances of Pantani vs Armstrong, why not? But not in this vid mate. Armstrong and Riis didn't appear in this vid. What are you talking about?
Yeah, of course. That's why Tonkov, much better time trialist than Pantani, in Mapei team (the same Mapei of 1996 Roubaix or the team who signed the Rominger prepared with Ferrari), who WON in Alpe de Pampeago and been second in Montecampione the same week and burned up Pantani in Trieste TT 7 days before Lugano's losed time with him without any mechanical problem or crash. Great theory the fondisti thing.
3)In TT a gregario is useless? LOL. You didn't know anything about history of cycling... read more, for example, about Luxembourg TT in 92 Tdf with De las Cuevas and Indurain. Or why Vaughters flew in Route du Sud 99 2 weeks after Tdf of Redemption hahaha...
      4) That's what made this performance of Mercatone's epic and legendary! Look at your comment full of bs! Talked about Velo (ok, good tt, not for been top 2 in a final tt of Giro in normal conditions but good tt) but not about Pondenzana! Didn't talk anything about Pantani's without helmet, flying in a "flat" TT! This is why we love cycling!
