Huge thanks to Brilliant for sponsoring this video!
This week, I sat down with two of my best friends and asked them, "What do I do that hurts my productivity?" Here's the result. Each of these five things is more subtle than the usual suspects - getting distracted by your phone, not sleeping enough, etc - but they can still prevent you from doing your best work.

    1. Perfectionism
    2. Organisation getting worse over time
    3. Taking inspiration from to many sources
    4. Thinking you are the exception to the rule
    5. Refusing to adapt to delays

The con about perfectionism applies to me as a musician. I was never able to finish compositions because I allways had this perfect idea of my pieces should sound. As a result I NEVER got better at composing. What saved me was my music teacher imposing DEADLINES for me to compose pieces that would be graded. As a result, I composed as best I could on a given time-frame, and that's what made me improve so much as a composer.

      jeremy murphy
Same, but with writing instead of music. I just need someone to kick my ass and say: „You have that finished by next Monday.“ and I‘ll be able to do great. But when there’s no directly imposed time limit, I‘ll get caught up in perfectionism and nothing is ever good enough, causing me to lose interest.

  • @MarkusJunnikkala

In regards to point 4, I think the opposite applies too. You have to embrace, and if possible, leverage your unique anomalies. I often find myself being way off the scale (for better or worse) with many things, and I try to adjust and push myself because I think I'm better off if I'm within the norm, only to find that it taxes me unnecessarily and ends up damaging my productivity. Now a big part of being efficient and effective for me is to trust the things I've confirmed to be true, where my strengths and weaknesses reside, and then operate within those parameters without apology or hesitation.

    • @TheShamansQuestion
      @TheShamansQuestion 6 лет назад +1

Yes, well said. I thought the same.
I think the answer is in moderating the beliefs accordingly. Be aware of one's strengths but also one's weaknesses. When he says thinking oneself to be the "exception" I think it's treated like an exception to everything, i.e. ignoring weaknesses and therefore unrealistic.

I totally agree on the Perfection point! It's really the same way with guitar and playing out life; if you sit in your room and practice and practice and practice without getting live experience, it's super hard to learn! However, going out any on stages and putting yourself out there to fail in front of better players will 10 times you're playing overnight. It's the same with any sort of content creation! Whether you are publishing once a day or once a week, just continuing to make the choice to ignore the desire for perfection, and just publishing the darn thing, will up your game in no time

  • @cdefgah4343
    @cdefgah4343 6 лет назад +1

Omg this video hits the spot totally for me. I really see me doing all these things exactly how you describe them, I'm such a perfectionist that I almost suffer from it because it's so difficult to get things done when I know it isn't perfect.
That really bothers me sometimes because there are times I spend DAYS on a single stupid task just to make it perfect and I'm totally unable to do other things instead.

  • @SteveHazel

bro you inspire me very single day..
I survived cancer twice while having half of my face amputated in the process.. a tumor destroyed my jaw and changed everything I once knew.. I decided to start my own channel to inspire others who feel ugly and not good enough for this world..I moved to Barcelona to build a new life. I want to show others that it's all about positivity and energy.. and that with the right mindset, you can overcome any mental or physical hurdle if u just learn to love yourself! positive energy trumps any physical shell! go check me out and subscribe if u want to help me reach my goal of helping others who lack self-love.. it would mean the world to me!!

Thank you for covering perfectionism. I"m actually going through therapy to lower my perfectionistic standards. There are many things that I'll over research (and because if it I never do it), never start (because I feel it won't be perfect), or quit prematurely (for the same reasons). Perfectionism can come in many forms and can be crippling. It's good to have standards, and high standards, but not detrimental ones or unattainable ones.

@4 I think people actually *can* do all the great things they want to do. BUT not all at once. Focus is only focus when it is directed at few things at a time. So in order to add more skills to oneself, one has to set priorities and be patient for things that are on the agenda later on.

    - Perfectionism: creating a lot of effective projects beats singular quality projects
    - Make time for decluttering organization systems
    - Avoid those who are distracting me from my goals
    - check Thomas Frank's warren buffet interest list video
    - Follow best practices (like in time management), have faith that they work with practice
    - "If there's a delay in work, where you are right now is your new starting point"

I would look at it as trying to establish a new habit of going long hours without checking your phone. Any habit takes some time to become second nature. Aim for small, doable goals and once you reach them, set the bar higher. For eg. if you can do one hour, aim for thirty more minutes for this week/month.

I struggle with perfectionism too, I procrastinate by fear of starting something and I spend a lot of time fixing it when it's started. I'm learning to finish things. What I think now is that I have to do something "good enough" to have feedbacks on it and I will get better with 'quantity' of things done!

In general dealing with this tends to be a matter of boiling it all down to the most important facets and evaluating how well you are taking care of all those elements to know where to focus to increase your net growth.

I love the thing about Perfectionism cause it really applies to how I try to get a perfect thing in one go and therefore take forever to finish something.

    No.5 - a revelation!
Refusal to acknowledge and adapt to delays in your work was such a "ah-ha" moment for me. Thanks Thomas and Mark!
I guess when it comes to any big project eg. a dissertation, it might be a good idea to leave some time aside to accommodate for all those little outliers and unforeseeable crises that are going to come up. We may not know such 'unknowns', but do know that there will always be some 'unknowns' when we embark on a project (and if not, then you can always spend that extra time reviewing or playing drunken mario kart)

Here's what I do to fight my perfectionism. When a work is about to be done, I ask myself "Is it 80% of what I could do?" (for a very important task, it's 90%) If something really bothers me, and quality of the thing would clearly suffer (70%), I rely on the feeling and fix the flaw. If my guts tell it's 80% or more, I publish it and move on to next project.

the 2 last ones are so me!!! always tell myself im an exception and can do double things per day and pull an all nighter and that is so not true lol. same with having delay and then expecting to do that and all the rest of my tasks the day after, of course by saying ill take no breaks and sleep less. which, more times then not just doesn't happen. thanks for putting a mirror and pumping motivation and productivity tips!

My productivity killer is my iPhone. Let me explain...
Back in 2008 I could take a poop in less than 5 minutes. Fast forward to 2018, it’s more like 5 hours. Lesson learned. Leave iPhone on counter when taking a poop in order to become more productive.

First, thank you for not wearing makeup in your videos; it's refreshing to see imperfections in an imperfect world.
Second, I would like to point out that while there are a great many online influences out there, it is possible to choose one path to go down, but get inspiration from lots of sources. I follow you, Mr. Vaynerchuk, Kerwin Rae, and a number of piano teachers, the best being Zach Evans. I'm not building a business, I'm learning an instrument, but a lot of inspiration can be applied across the board. I look forward to your next video.

This is a great video. I have a question about perfectionism and having deadlines. Do you create consequences for your own deadlines? Like I know for either work or school that you know what will happen if you don't do something but what do you do when your not answering to anyone on your own projects?

THANK YOU for this very useful video. I really relate to the "Perfectionism" problem. I have been working on launching a blog and delaying it continuously because I keep feeling like it still needs more work. I will try to follow your tip about making a strict schedule and following it even if I don't feel like it. Thanks!
