    1) forgive yourself for procastinaing previously
    2) redefine what success means
    3) remove distractions
    4) break down your project
    5) re frame tasks as input based
    6) start by writing things up

    • @abj136
      @abj136 5 лет назад +2

      I think 5 is misnamed. As described, TF says think about the task more in terms of putting in 20 minutes of effort rather than directly in terms of the outputs you are trying to achieve. I understand that focusing on getting the effort going is valuable. I don't understand the disregard of the outputs.
      But I don't feel this really is focusing on inputs. To me, reframing tasks as input-based automatically means to think about the task in terms of what information you need to collect to help you carry out the task more effectively. That is certainly a useful perspective as it takes you from an unknown (how exactly will I finish this big harry task) to a known (I can't finish this task without X, so let's focus on X). Perhaps this is what TF had in mind when he said Input-based, but if so, it wasn't clear to me when watching.

    • @GrumpyDerg
      @GrumpyDerg 5 лет назад +12

      @@abj136 Based on what he's talking about (the Pomodoro technique), I think he means instead of working UNTIL you produce a desired output (which can take an arbitrary amount of time - especially when you're just starting), set a timer and start working until you RECEIVE (not produce) an "interrupt" signal from the timer where you are allowed to pause whatever you're doing and take a break. You don't have to have anything produced yet - the "output" might not be ready yet, but you shifted from output-based to input (or interrupt)-based mode, so it doesn't matter that it's not ready yet.
      This should reduce the anxiety of starting a potentially long task that could last hours (if not days) and make that first step knowing you're not there to finish the task, but to spend 20 minutes on it, which is doable. The first step is usually the hardest.

    Thomas, with every video you post, you are curing me of my academia induced depression. Since I've started University, I have been more and more convinced every day that my failures were part of my identity, that I was not good enough and I had something missing. But then you post a very, very well documented video which explains my feelings as behaviours that I can change not as self-fulfilling prophecies I cannot escape. The media is overflowing with hyper-motivational content, but nothing compares to your realistic refreshing approach. Thank you and good luck with all your future plans! I hope the self-intervention is working.

      You will do it; if you didn't fail at tasks you wouldn't need an education, teachers deal out failure because we must. If you are in higher education you've proven your successes already, it is just the raising of the bar. So don't look at the distance you need to leap look at the difference in height since your last successful task. I'm 48 and have repetitive dreams about failing my degree which I passed really well 20 years or more since. I'm also terrified of students and other teachers, so I focus on learning and sharing worthwhile knowledge for the sake of a better world - even if I cheat the political curriculum at times, and I avoid my colleagues and retain my student character - my classes are always over subscribed as a result, and my colleagues probably feel more intimidated by me. I'm fortunate to have a likeminded boss. My nemesis is the length of student identity numbers and number dyslexia. We are all human.

    1. Forgive yourself for past procrastinations
    2. Redefine success for your situation (e.g. low on time)
    3. Remove potential short term distractions e.g Phone
    4. Break your task into smaller sub tasks so its easier to manage
    5. Work for short bursts at times e.g 20 minutes at a time then rest then repeat
    6. First set up your task e.g set up your tabs or set up that you work on
    Here you go or you can skip to the summary in the video 8:55

    Thanks senpai for this series. The last two weeks were the period in my life were I procrastinated the most, even if I had to finish something very very important to me, the presentation of the startup I am working to. The thing that made the difference to get out of there was having enough sleeptime at night again and meditate every morning. Having more energy allowed me to break the "big elephant" into smaller parts that I was finally able to eat, like we say here in Italy. Ironically in that time you produced these videos. Life always gives you what you need to satisfy your needs I guess. But we cannot realize it if we are asleep :)

    I'm currently working on writing my Masters thesis... and I'll tell you, number 6 was SO important for getting me started. Just outlining the parts of the theses and setting up the formatting so that publishing later would be easier has made the actual act of writing it go so much smoother. Setting up my reference manager (Mendeley is a lifesaver!!!!) was also immensely helpful.

I've picked up the Forest App and it has been my go to for whenever I need to get into that "Flow" state. What has also helped me is wearing my lab coat before I get into my Pomodoro session. Andrew Farrell Is this Homer’s “The Odyssey” you are referring to? If so, it should interest you to know that that epic poem was originally recited; it was spoken long before it was ever written (though there are several theories on this, so it’s a little debatable).
      *Edit* : I had not watched the end of the video before replying to your comment. I now know you were clearly referring to Homer’s “The Odyssey.” I think you also may have known that little information I included above. Nonetheless, “The Odyssey” is pretty great, though the quality depends on the translation (some translators are more competent and, depending on the translator, the epic will either be in prose or poetry). It’s sort of a matter of personal preference, but I’m sure the version on Audible will be just fine. Sorry for the unnecessary rambling, and enjoy the audiobook.

    Mr Frank thanks for making this procrastination- in-depth series video
    You have been doing a tremendous job in teaching misguided humans like me on how to live disciplined life. I'll be forever grateful to you but there is a problem i am facing for which i require your assistance. I am trying to get my master and i am trying to work super hard but everytime i sit to study i am unable to concentrate and sometimes i just dooze off. I hope you can provide any sort of guidance on this issue of mine.
    Please keep on uploading and may you blessed by karma for the action you are doing.

    I did some research and calculations and put it in a video a few days ago - it turns out that 5-hours a day procrastination (very common for most of us) equals a loss of $32,500 per year if you earn $25 per hour. If you were to make that money instead and invested it with a 7% return rate... it turns out you are wasting over $454,000 in 10 years and $6.5M in 40 years. Ouch!!! If you ever feel stressed out about money... you might want to do something about that.

      After struggling with doing many things in 24 hours , I felt that there is something like procrastination. But still did not clear between ' lost in focusing to do things' and 'procrastinate' Or these are same terms.

    The to-do list for misc. things is really good. I have had the same trouble of doing everything but the actual task too. Meditation has helped to put aside the upcoming thoughts or just automatically passing them to a list. I mean, all of the thoughts are not so important after all, but at least you have the list to put them on if they really are

    Great tips, Thomas. Basic human nature will always play a role in procrastination. The good news is that it is still doable to get out on the swamp of procrastination and improve your productivity.
