  • Sarah-Louise did not have an idyllic childhood; in fact it was far from it.
Her mother left her with her father when she was only three years old and then her father sent her off to an illegal foster family. While there she suffered extreme physical and mental abuse. It was only when the mother of that foster family died that Sarah-Louise was sent back to live with her father. Her own mother did eventually get back in touch to tell her she had two sisters however the relationship was not a stable one.
Sarah ‘bounced around in the system’ as she puts it eventually deciding to leave the area she grew up in to go and live with a friend. She did eventually find love and the father of her own daughters but that too ended up being a toxic relationship which she had to extract herself and her children from.
Thankfully Sarah-Louise has the will and determination to survive. She moved away again and has started a new life. Through eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy, she was able to explore her past and her thoughts and feelings towards what had happened. This also brought about her creative writing through poetry. Now Sarah-Louise is giving others a voice too by encouraging them to share their stories on her new facebook page called ‘Survivors stories’ it’s not only for those who have survived child abuse, domestic abuse and mental abuse but those who have survived other traumas in their life such as cancer and physical disabilities.
Watch the full episode to hear one of Sarah’s poems and her full story in her own words.
