- On December 9, 1965, A Charlie Brown Christmas aired on TV screens across America and instantly captured the hearts and ears of a generation. Bolstering the animated special, based on Charles M. Schulz’s immensely popular PEANUTS comic strip, was an engaging score from Bay Area jazz artist Vince Guaraldi, who brought characters like Charlie Brown, Lucy, and Snoopy to life through his evocative cues.
Working primarily with bassist Fred Marshall and drummer Jerry Granelli, Guaraldi paired inspired interpretations of traditional holiday fare (“O Tannenbaum,” “Hark, the Herald Angels Sing,” and “What Child Is This”) with original compositions, including the instantly recognizable “Linus and Lucy” theme, “Skating,” and “Christmas Time Is Here.” The latter song, available as both an instrumental and vocal track, featured young choral singers from St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in San Rafael, CA.
More than five decades later, the Emmy® and Peabody®-winning animated classic has spawned more than two dozen subsequent PEANUTS specials. Guaraldi’s soundtrack, meanwhile, has since become one of the best-selling jazz albums in history, second only to Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue, and regularly ranks among America’s top-selling holiday albums every December.

Listening to this, I'm 7 years old again. Me and my two younger brothers are in our pajamas and sitting on the floor in front of the TV watching It's a Charlie Brown Christmas. Meanwhile it's a cold, dark winter's night. But my family and I are sipping the best hot chocolate in the world, and we're all warm and cozy. That was 53 years ago... Both my parents have passed away, including my middle brother Mike.... Such bittersweet memories...😪

It was Vince's music that got me to like Jazz, lol. When I was a teen I thought, "Jazz sux" then I realized this was jazz thought "Oh, I guess I do like it".

This whole CD is killer. Sigh....! It not only takes me back, it takes me forward. It grants me strength, and a humor. It's inspiration seems to know no bounds.

Whenever I relisten the whole album I debate myself over which is my favorite piece. In the end I come to the conclusion that it doesn't matter, but when _What child is this_ begins, for that moment, I know it is my favorite one.
i get chills from this, i grew up with this charlie brown special and so did my mom. this music has impacted me, it’s very special and i do not have the words to describe the feeling it gives me.

Outside of the religious realm, Mr. Guaraldi sums up Christmas in ways with his music that other Christmas greats have tried to do over generations. My humble opinion, for all it is worth.

This takes me back to elementary school. This would constantly be playing around Christmas and thanksgiving season. I’ll never forget the many many years I spent having a Charlie Brown thanksgiving in my class or watching the Christmas episode. I wish I could go back

Better known to me as the 'Greensleeves' tune, but a beautiful interpretation.
there's another version on the soundtrack album aptly named greensleeves, it's very similar but has differences in the filling improvisations among other slight changes. just in case you hadn't seen

Just had a cheeseburger at a restaurant in Marin County. My friend airdrops me a picture of Vince Guaraldi. I go “who’s that?“. He goes: “he’s a famous pianist and did work on Peanuts”. I go - Vince Guaraldi? Yes! He then points over to the receptionist - who I’ve known for years - and says that’s her father. Got me out of my seat. He died when she was 16 years old. Blew me away! Gave her a hug. Tears, yes.

People keep saying that this is Greensleeves. I'll tell you the difference; this is Cocktail jazz and the Greensleeves version isn't. In other words, NOBODY compares Vince Guaraldi and his jazz trio to Greensleeves.

With this song supposedly being "What Child Is This", I don't see any correlation between this Gueraldi instrumental version and more traditional versions with the lyrics. Like the piano in particular, I don't see how it matches the typical tone and pitch changes of the vocals. It's messing with my head. Is it like a different Christmas song altogether that just happens to also use that title?

This is Cocktail Jazz. It's piano music used to play in the background of cocktail bars or fancy restaurants.

How great it was to hear Vince Guaraldi music on ABC channel 12 in Saginaw michigan. The 60s as a kid visionary mind of Christmas, I was so happy with joy. And today at 60 years old I'm reliving it again..Charlie Brown show was fun. Thanks for the years
What child is this?
I don't see how this is "What Child is This." Based on other versions of the Christmas track under that title for which there is vocals and lyrics that I've heard, I don't see how the piano reflects the exact same typical tone, pitch, and overall melody of the words, all unlike for "The Christmas Song." Furthermore, it sounds almost identical to "Greensleeves" on that same Charlie Brown Christmas album! So yeah. Overall I'm just very puzzled!
What Child Is This is the opening line of a hymn/carol that was set to the tune of Greensleeves.
As for not having the same tone, pitch and melody, that’s what jazz is. It’d be like saying that Johnny Costa doesn’t play Fred Rogers’ music right.
I’d suggest listening to Mozart’s variations on “Ah, vous dirais-je, Maman,” K265 (which is almost but not quite the same melody as Twinkle Twinkle, A B C D, and Baa Baa Black Sheep) which is quite diverse on the one hand, but still very easy for laypersons to detect the original in.
why are you over analyzing the composition? Are you a Jazz critic? Just enjoy the spirit that the composition brings.
