- On December 9, 1965, A Charlie Brown Christmas aired on TV screens across America and instantly captured the hearts and ears of a generation. Bolstering the animated special, based on Charles M. Schulz’s immensely popular PEANUTS comic strip, was an engaging score from Bay Area jazz artist Vince Guaraldi, who brought characters like Charlie Brown, Lucy, and Snoopy to life through his evocative cues.
Working primarily with bassist Fred Marshall and drummer Jerry Granelli, Guaraldi paired inspired interpretations of traditional holiday fare (“O Tannenbaum,” “Hark, the Herald Angels Sing,” and “What Child Is This”) with original compositions, including the instantly recognizable “Linus and Lucy” theme, “Skating,” and “Christmas Time Is Here.” The latter song, available as both an instrumental and vocal track, featured young choral singers from St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in San Rafael, CA.
More than five decades later, the Emmy® and Peabody®-winning animated classic has spawned more than two dozen subsequent PEANUTS specials. Guaraldi’s soundtrack, meanwhile, has since become one of the best-selling jazz albums in history, second only to Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue, and regularly ranks among America’s top-selling holiday albums every December.

I love how Vince Guaraldi could take an ancient folk tune/Christmas Carol and turn it into nice, cool, breezy smooth jazz. I've loved his music ever since the first Charlie Brown holiday special.
Greensleeves was written during the English renaissance but you’re right about how brilliantly Guaraldi transformed this Greensleeves into a jazz classic
@@jasonschwartzmanstein9661 Last year I uploaded Skating around my indoor wonderland, this year I should this.
I swear, Vince Guaraldi and his band (and the mighty power of jazz) could take the holiday songs you despise the most (everybody has at least a few that drive them up a wall) and make them into heart-stirring, all-time favorites in just a few bars.
Sean Wilkinson o
Sean Wilkinson absolutely correct!
well said.
Sean Wilkinson - Only A Master Can Do That.....And Make It So Easy....****Just LOVE His Phrasing!!! I listen to THIS - ALL YEAR LONG!!!! (I Don’t Even Celebrate Christmas......)
I think Vince had the right mixture of respect for the theme and a playful, friendly bop, some simple chords, to make the crossover into mainstream that makes a jazz recording accessible to those whodon't normally like the genre. Vaughn Williams saw something in this baroque folk theme that shifted from minor to major. We're fortunate the producers of the "Peanuts" specials help give Vince the exposure he deserves.
Vince Guaraldi plays with a smile in his soul. That's why I love him.
There it is.
Nothing encompasses his spirit more than this.
To me, Winter isn't anything specific, like holidays, or memories.
Winter is just, pure magic.
Every year, it does the exact same beautiful thing...
Transforming the world into magic.
The crisp air, every beautiful visual, every recounted thing,
it can be melancholy or absolute paradise.
Winter for some people may be chaotic and displeasing, what with the delays, and ice, and cold temperatures and all that..
But I hope to think that most people can pull back the veil, and see how it makes the world human again.
That's what Winter is to me.
And that's what Vince Guaraldi is to me.
My favorite Christmas album of all time, so relaxing.
Scott Gill me too man HANDS DOWN
Mine too. Just love hearing this, snug and warm on a snowy night.
it's that, "I'm in a mall and it's around Christmas" feeling I always get when hearing this song, classic!
Ironically I worked at a cell phone store in a mall in 1998. My manager played jazz music and A Charlie Brown Christmas and it was so refreshing.
Yes! Totally feels like it, timeless classic
Well it does make sense. This is Cocktail Jazz. It's background piano music you'd hear in cocktail bars, fancy restaurants, shopping centers, etc.
What you get when you combine an old, old English Christmas song and American jazz. Perfection.
Its actually an old Renaissance era love ballad "Greensleeves" that was only made into a Christmas song "Who's Child is This?" 150 or so years ago.
@@kindofsimplereally I know well both greensleeves and what child is this.
Watching snow fall as twilight descends...and listening to this piece.. sublime
R.I.P. Vince Guaraldi and Charles Schulz.
And Bill Melendez who directed all the Charlie Brown specials and did the voice of Snoopy. Don't forget our Bill.
@@heatherferreira4225 My error. R.I.P. Bill Melendez.
: (
Peter Robbins the original voice of Charlie Brown as well.😔🔔 × 10🎤🎹🌲🎅🏻🤶📺B.W.
Vince Guaraldi is such a great composer I could literally listen to his Christmas songs all year round and still won't get tired
Dillon DeBourg ikr
im listening to it now...in May! great song anytime of year!
Peak levels of serotonin when listening to this
Indeed
Best Christmas album ever. Period. No discussion. The end.
Absoeffinlutey! Great taste in music outta you! Kudos, and Merry next Christmas!
You spittin fax
Great music taste my dude
I concur.
@@eiforget I agree
Absolutely agree 100%
I don't even consider this a Christmas song. To me its a timeless jazz piece. Absolutely love that warm yet raw sound.
Agreed 2018 🙂
It’s also the music to “What Child is This”
@@nkley1 Yes it is.
It's the Song Whose Child is This . Lyrics added to the traditional song Greensleeves. Beautiful song
Just because the music's different, that doesn't mean it's not a Christmas song anymore. Like how Silent Night was originally written/sung in German, but it's still a Christmas song when we sing it in English.
Just knowing that this exists makes me extremely happy
I concur Stefan.!
Vince, thank you for reminding me what happiness from music feels like!
Me too
No Christmas season is complete without hearing this soundtrack.
You just know everything is going to be alright when your ears first start hearing his mellow music. Note to self: next time you have a tough life problem, just tune into Vince Guaraldi and all will be fine!
Yeah. ❤
This whole album was nothing short of amazing.!!!!
I wish i could live in a Thomas Kinkade painting and listen to Vince Guaraldi trio... Cue snow fall and sitting by the fireplace.
This man was literally born to play the piano!!
Oh yeah baby that’s the jam
This is so beautiful, so sublime, it moves me to tears. The older I get, the more special this song is to me. The holidays are not complete without this in the background. .....
As close to perfect as you can get.
Seriously, I don’t see how anyone could not love this. It’s just absolutely beautiful.
This is by far the best Christmas song I know of.
Vince just blew this one away. rest in peace sir
its summer and i'm listening to this
This album stays on my phone. Heck, this is my alarm.
Boyd Adkins IV im finna make it mine lol
This version is "THE" best! I love it...fantastic piece.
If I can't sleep I listen to this sometimes and fall asleep before I know it
Love Vince! Its Good Music 🎼🎹🎶 to fall asleep to. Its very soothing & relaxing😴
Christmas isn’t Christmas without this song
This is just sheer beauty. Vince Guaraldi was a musical genius, and wrote some great songs for the Peanuts specials. Even as a kid I’ve always appreciated the music that’s on the original Peanuts specials. So smooth and relaxing.
I. lOVE. YOU. vINCE. GUARALDI. ALWAYS. Merry. Christmas.
2019 still jamming to this all time classic 💗
2021 and I am too
The Trio...AND SNOW !!!
❤️
One of my favorite all time songs of Vince! Soo Loved his piano 🎹 style! He is greatly missed. Left us waay too soon. Lost a music genius.
My favorite holiday riff
Agree 100%!
Thank you, Vince Guaraldi, for helping me like jazz music, a genre that I originally wasn't a huge fan of
i learned how to play the original as a kid, this is so much nicer love it
I love somber Christmas music
Who is lighting the tree and listening to this classic? Me in 2021👍🏾❤
My favorite Christmas song.
Just Beautiful....
these songs help my plants thrive...
and put me in a familiar, comforting mood.. no matter the season..
#happyholidays
Remind me of a out door mall (it was like a little town), had those victorian-era lampost and stone pavement on the ground and had christmas light bulbs stretching in the huge walkway on the middle of the road with a slow moving trolley moving slowing in the distance, was snowing moderately (continuously), the clothe shops/chocolate shops (i.e. AE and the Rocky mountain company back then) lit up brightly. Of course the people and families with thick winter coats with shopping bags walking on the pavement and bustling around the mall to look for gifts to buy. All of this with Vince Guaraldi's soundtracks playing in the background (they had speakers across the mall, knew I recognize these songs when I was there).
i need to listen to this entire album once a day...just to stay regular.
It's that time of year again :D
Best. Xmas. Album. Ever!
festive & a beautiful piece of music
Awesome.😁🤗🎄🎄
I come here every year for comfort. This song, my paper crown and a frosty glass of brandy. Tree's in the corner glowing warmly, HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE☃️🎄🎉😎
its too bad that no one thought to film any of these christmas record recording sessions. it would have been great to watch these amazing musicians create such timeless music.
So agree - video of Vince and his trio(s) is/are scarce.
They released a deluxe version of the album this year with two CDs worth of alternate takes that include studio chatter between the musicians
i just googled what it would take to film something in 1965, im going to say the reason is because it costs more than they made in a year, plus they where musicians, not actors, no reason to have a state of art film going when you just wanna jam on the piano
Vince is a master
i'm listening to this soundtrack over and over again!!! i love it
What has happened to Christmas music!!!!!!
It’s a tragedy I literally cry about it because it breaks my heart that much.
Pieces like this is why Vince Guaraldi is and always be my FAVORITE! RIP my friend!
Superb taste in music brought me here ...
I can't wait till its the holiday season again.
Jay-Lan Halliburton Merry Christmas !🎄
My favourite Christmas song version... I miss that genius musician.
Many of you who have or know the CB Christmas album will already know the "What Child Is This" track and the "Greensleeves" track are the same melody, but each is treated quite differently by this trio.
This might sound crazy but hear me out, Whether its Christmas or not, this song will always be in my heart locked up for years and years, dancing around like a ballerina, full of happiness and joy, this song is a good song for Peanuts honestly.
Im back for another year : )
fantastic piece for christmas
It sends shivers down my spine !!!!!!
This has to be one of my favorites off this album! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
amazing rendition
That. Performance. Was. Amazing. Such soulful playing, lovingly dancing with this centuries-old and deservedly so melody. Beautiful!
When you think of Christmas music . This should be the first album that comes up. I know there is many but nothing as classical and authentic as this. ❤❤❤❤
My second favorite is the great pumpkin soundtrack this is my first
One of my favorite albums!!
Yes, my friend. Simply, yes.
Every year at Christmas my family listens to this album. Now, no matter what time of year, it always puts me in the Christmas spirit. I still haven’t gotten tired of it.
Thank you!!! 🎄❤️
the greatest musician of my childhood.
The reason I go to Michael's every year to look at the electronic Christmas village display
My dad hums the song all year round
Wow. Just wow.
Vince Guaraldi is so good
When I really need to concentrate at work, I put this soundtrack on and it gives such a relaxing atmosphere to complete my task(s).
Too good
Miss Christmas already
cool ..great song!!! sos grande Vince Guaraldi!!!!
perfect
perfect......
I dont think there is anyone else on this planet who can duplicate this musical icon that is Vince Guaraldi.
Outside of the religious realm, Mr. Guaraldi sums up Christmas in ways with his music that other Christmas greats have tried to do over generations. My humble opinion, for all it is worth.
Watching in June 2017
THE BEST CHRISTMAS ALBUM.
Fun Fact: Greensleeves is a song about unrequited love, a theme that really fits Lucy and Schroeder's relationship!
It's so relaxing song that make me forget to do a like in the video.
It's the only Christmas album you should own
An all time fave 👍
"Skating" & "Halloween Waltz" round out the top 2, this is 3 & oh x-mas tree & Hark the herald Angels sing. #Top5VGTrioXMas
Ember Ash I'll agreed with that!😎🍪

@@hogfan595 - Go HOGS, Go!!! And, you crochet too 💜✨
This actually sounds like "What child is this" which is also in the soundtrack
The thing that I’m mad about is that the only place you can get it is on Apple TV.I’m not paying for a classic that should be seen millions of people..
I leave this tune to a friend of ours.
I reccomend this to those who were not only divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived… but divorced, beheaded, LIVE!
Memories, Nice piano rendition however I use to play an acoustic guitar version, classically; I miss those days....
Who's listining in November 2016 ?
Cheiftain 19 Me!!! I can't believe tomorrow is Thanksgiving!
Cheiftain 19 Listening now. This album is what I look forward to every year
Cheiftain 19 me

Couple days left✝️🎄🎁..... PATRIOTSNATION
What is wrong with the 10 people who do not like this video?
I think because its not Greensleeves, in the sheet music it's named "What Child is This"
Joshua Davis-Walker It has both names
Joshua Davis-Walker "what child is this" is the christian rendition of this. its original title is greensleeves
Joshua Davis-Walker That's actually a different song
+Anthony Hamm Likely just trolls.
💚💚
What a shame that he died so young. Just think about what he could have accomplished if he lived longer.
Soo glad for what he did leave us. He wrote the theme to the This is Arbor Day Charlie Brown the day he passed away. His music was a Great Blessing to all who hear it even now 🎼🎹
