Vince Guaraldi Trio - O Tannenbaum

- On December 9, 1965, A Charlie Brown Christmas aired on TV screens across America and instantly captured the hearts and ears of a generation. Bolstering the animated special, based on Charles M. Schulz’s immensely popular PEANUTS comic strip, was an engaging score from Bay Area jazz artist Vince Guaraldi, who brought characters like Charlie Brown, Lucy, and Snoopy to life through his evocative cues.
Working primarily with bassist Fred Marshall and drummer Jerry Granelli, Guaraldi paired inspired interpretations of traditional holiday fare (“O Tannenbaum,” “Hark, the Herald Angels Sing,” and “What Child Is This”) with original compositions, including the instantly recognizable “Linus and Lucy” theme, “Skating,” and “Christmas Time Is Here.” The latter song, available as both an instrumental and vocal track, featured young choral singers from St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in San Rafael, CA.
More than five decades later, the Emmy® and Peabody®-winning animated classic has spawned more than two dozen subsequent PEANUTS specials. Guaraldi’s soundtrack, meanwhile, has since become one of the best-selling jazz albums in history, second only to Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue, and regularly ranks among America’s top-selling holiday albums every December.

The Charlie Brown specials were largely responsible for developing my love for classic jazz. Thank you, Vince Guaraldi! 😀👍
We should thank Charles Schultz also. He had a hand in every part of the Christmas special including the music. Schultz was a fan of jazz music.
Thank you @@georgetunstill2341 & @Erzahler for your cool comments--Vince also introduced me to jazz through all of the specials as well as through other artists like Muddy Waters, Manhattan Transfer, etc.
@@georgetunstill2341 Lee Mendelson hand picked Vince Guaraldi to do the music and he was glad to do it because he was a Peanuts fan. Seriously so many things came together to make such a classic batch of art. All the specials are great and I really love The Great Pumpkin Waltz maybe the most of all. Can't go wrong with any of his Peanuts work though really.
He died too young! What a genius!
Indeed he did @@d.vaughn8990 -- Vince Guaraldi was only 47 when he died on February 6, 1976. ;-(
Christmas wouldn't be the same without this great music.

The best ever
Oh Vince, we adore thee.
think you guys could do a piano tutorial of this? I wanna learn it lol
Lovvvve it !!!!!I can listen to it year around...
This not just average this is notch people..
Vince doesn't get nearly enough recognition for his incredible scores for the Peanuts specials and films. Everybody thought his score would never work but he proved them all wrong and showed why Charles Schultz had faith in him.
Can you tell us more? While I’ve known about Vince G since college, I’ve never heard any backstories about the soundtracks. Who thought it wouldn’t work? Please,we would love to hear more.
@@edlawrence6553 For the first Peanuts special (A Charlie Brown Christmas), there were a lot of things Charles Schultz pushed hard for that networks and studio executives thought would never work. Charles wanted actual kids to do the voices for all the Penauts characters (a tradition that continues to this day despite having to frequently recast the roles), wanted Vince to compose the soundtrack entirely on his own and most importantly wanted to include the true meaning of Christmas with the bible passage Linus quotes.
Charles Shultz wasn't actually responsible for Vince Guaraldi being hired....that was producer Lee Mendelson. ruclips.net/video/SkZu5H4Wb_M/видео.html
@@JCBro-yg8vd yeah I recall Schultz famously hated jazz
@@JCBro-yg8vd great for you! We, I love Charlie
This is what childhood sounds like.
The same with me. When I think of my childhood Christmases, this track and "Christmas Time is Here" from the same special are the first songs that come to mind. There's nothing better.
Same man, instead of classic Christmas music my family would play this every Christmas. I'm so glad they did.
Copy that!
@Colin Henderson as a 2000s kid, Vince, and Charlie Brown Christmas is extremely nostalgic to me. It was a tremendous part of my childhood.
Amen
No one has ever made a Christmas Carol swing like Vince Guaraldi. What a great jazz musician he was!
When it comes to Christmas jazz, Vince is the man. I hope the Good Lord Jesus won't mind the saints in heaven being able to listen to the archives of Vince. I'm pretty sure Vince arranged these sweet melodies with a heart of worship. 🙂

What a truly iconic line said by the beloved blockhead himself.

Whenever I hear this rendition of "Oh Christmas Tree" by Vince Guaraldi, I'm a kid again living at 6-B Civic Park Apartments in 1969. It's just not Christmas unless I hear this rendition. At Christmas time, we could hardly wait to see "A Charlie Brown Christmas
" on TV. I really miss those days.
I know exactly what you mean, brother.
@@ulyssesgrant2782 I first saw Charlie Brown Christmas sometime in the mid 90s and I totally agree with you. It is not Christmas until you hear this soundtrack and watch that special. I remember watching it every year with my family, along with the Rankin-Bass Rudolph special and How The Grinch Stole Christmas! Charlie Brown Christmas will never get old. Sure it may be a bit dated but that's what makes it special. I love the limited animation.
Wasn't this song on that one Christmas theater episode of the Boondocks?

Just love this style of jazz: the harmony, the rhythm, the improvising, and the Christmas nostalgia. Few things are this beautiful!
Did you know that the Charlie Brown Christmas special was rejected at first by CBS: they didn't like that amateur children were doing the voices, they didn't like the "anti-consumerism" theme of the plot -- and they didn't like the music.
They didn't know how much it would remain in people's hearts
And the religious part
They also wanted a laugh track, but Mendelson rejected that
They treated the special like what the kids did to Charlie Brown's tree... They criticized it...
I'm so glad that blew up in their faces when it became their most popular and classic show ever to the point where they're in huge trouble if they don't air it =)
My Grandma used to love this movie, so much, before she died. It brings tears to my eyes every time I hear this song.
+Noah Johnson I can easily relate to your pain...
Same thing. I am so sorry for your loss
Thank you guys :(
My condolences.
Noah Johnson you seem to be a good pianist as well. Upload your own version in her memory :)
The program itself has been a timeless classic and seasonal favourite since my father was a child. I truly hope they don't stop airing the re-runs every Christmas.
+RedBaronFilms1918 Are you kidding? CBS will never drop it. Ever. In fact, the 50th Anniversary Special will be this Monday featuring a host of special guests, including President Obama doing his best "teacher voice" impression.
Bill Bird
Oh wow, I'd want to see that!
+Bill Bird Thank you Bill! Didn't know that... I'm glad I'm not the only one that loves this classic. Happy holidays..
+Hector Griffin I enjoyed it immensely. If there is one complaint -- only one -- there was nobody over 35 on the show. I can't understand why the networks are so insistent on kids, kids, kids these days. Nothing against them, but I long for the days when older entertainers like Bing Crosby paired with newcomers like David Bowie for example. Even today it's done on a limited basis -- Lady Gaga paired with Tony Bennett. That show needed more of that. Just my opinion.
You mean ABC. And I enjoyed the 50th anniversary special last year. My favorite part was Kristin Chenoweth's rendition of Happiness
I don't care how stressed out I am or what time of the year it is. Vince Guaraldi can always put me in the Christmas spirit
Vince, you are so missed.❤❤❤❤. 🎄🎁🎀⛄🎄🎁⛄🎀🎄🎁⛄🎀🎄🎁⛄🎀
Dude this song reminds me of every Christmas when I was a child. We watched Charlie Brown every year. Sublime melancholy echoed for all of us now as adults. God bless Vince Guaraldi and Charles Schultz. God bless us all everyone!

And in 24!
I'm a sentimental old softie. This whole album takes me back to my childhood, when life (well, some of it) was soft and kind and gentle, especially around Christmas. This music is pure comfort for me. I.can sit in the dark and listen to this (sometimes with an extremely flammable beverage by my side) and the cat in my lap, and this music makes me feel warm and safe.
Thank you Vince, wherever you may be, for this lingering gift of comfort and joy.

What a smooth way of transitioning into the glorious season of Christmas.
Even though I spend Christmas alone most of my years because of my shit family, I still love that time of year and the joy that the music brings me.
My dude, I have a huge family that would be more than willing to accept you with open arms. There is no reason that you should spend Christmas alone. Holler at me, my dude
whats so adress mayne. i need some o dat turkie brotha.
There is nothing wrong with spending Christmas alone. Imagine forcing yourself to endure a time with people you cannot stand for the sake of tradition? That is far more alone, if you ask me. You are better people now that you are away from that negativity. And it's okay if it hurts - it really is. Because that means that you have a heart in you. It's more than what others can offer this world Keep being you, it's gotten you this far after all.

Actually, friend, I appreciate your attempt to call someone out. I was presenting a hypothetical situation. Perhaps I should have reworded it so there was no confusion? I was offering a word of encouragement. No I was not talking about myself but of others who I do know in such a situation. Please be careful about making assumptions like that.
Unfortunately the context of text does a disservice to tone. I had meant to only offer encouragement. But it seems it's gone a rougher path. I apologize.
The pairing of Guarldi’s melancholy jazz and Charlie Brown is perfection. They were made for one another and the Christmas special would not have achieved its iconic status without this combination.
In my opinion the first 35 seconds are some of the best sounds ever produced
Yes, magical🌲❤️
Agreed but I'd stretch it out a bit and say the first 1:10 are some of the best sounds ever produced. Its really magical stuff.
Such a relaxing catchy song, brings back memories of Christmas in the past.

Every score composed by Vince Guaraldi in "A Charlie Brown Christmas" is wonderful. This, along with the instrumental version of "Christmastime is Here" is probably my favorite score in the special. It's so relaxing, soothing and calm.

"Lights, please."
And there were in the same country shepherds abiding
in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them,
and the glory of the Lord shone round about them:
and they were sore afraid.
And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold,
I bring you good tidings of great joy,
which shall be to all people.
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour,
which is Christ the Lord.
And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe
wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the
heavenly host praising God, and saying,
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace,
good will toward men.
That's what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown...

Whoa momma 😳😳😳
How humanity has longingly hung onto the desperate grasp of the heartstrings of sacrifice. That's what I hear in Guaraldi's take on this most ancient of tunes, a depth of meaning and expression of the innermost reaches of the warmth of its simple chord progression, expanded into the massive creativity that only his jazz palate could let blossom. Highly recognizable, yet clearly a vast departure of what came before. Genius. What child is this?
Amen.

It’s 2022, I was born in 2002, and 2004 i was in Lebanon.
I cried as soon as this soundtrack started playing because i re experience and relive a happy memory where we it used to be my mom, my dad, my brother, our 3 cats and 2 dogs in front of the TV living room, watching Charlie Brown Christmas special. And it was simply the easier times. Before more fucked up family relationships and life struggles came to arise and became a part of my consciousness.
Which makes this comment all that more saddening to write. And that this will soon be a present moment that will become past as soon as you finish reading this “now comment”. The Charlie Brown specials, weee simply nostalgic af. ✨✨✨✨
Since last year’s October, my mom and I had to move into a new house to rent. Because our landlord was a jerk, very demanding for more money that then became unaffordable for my mom to pay rent. So yeah. We had all pur furniture moved to a new house in the same country: Lebanon. So life was different and it was so sad to say goodbye to pur house. Seeing it get very emptied. I took pictures of each of the rooms before they were all emptied. As memory and to write about it all in my future autobiography.❤✨✨✨

Vince, your music is woven into American culture like a heartbeat into life-ever-present, essential, and felt by all, from the youngest to the oldest, bringing joy and warmth with every note. I can't listen without my toes tapping the floor. Somehow, your music ignites a kinetic symphony within me, starting with a subtle toe-tap that cascades upward to my hips. Even while seated, my torso slowly begins to sway, shoulders roll back and forth, and head begins to bob ever so slightly, until I am in an irrepressible seated dance-an expression of the joy bestowed by your piano and brush drum, transforming me into a living, breathing instrument of your infectious rhythms.
