The captain actually had some knowledge of microbursts. He knew they were in a microburst. Cant fault the captain he did everything he could
All three of the pilots had been trained for it. It was a crosswind that made it fatal.
@@Powerranger-le4up Delta 191. Thw pilots apart from the captain knew that the fuck they were flyng into
How do you know this?
@@Powerranger-le4up how do you know this? This is more than just a crosswind. They said they didn’t know much about these
How do you know that
I was a teacher who lived near DFW when the Delta 191 crash occurred; I was also on the regular blood donor list for Dallas County. It was nearly the end of summer break, and I remember distinctly that I was standing in our backyard that day, watching the black clouds rolling around and thinking, "This is weird weather. I bet a lot of planes are going to get backed up for a while." Then, I heard our phone ringing inside the house, and when I went inside (the era of landlines hanging on the kitchen wall with a long cord), it was the blood calling me in for an emergency donation. I hopped in my car and started racing to the center, and when I turned on the car radio and heard the news, I knew why they were calling-gave my pint that day, I hope to God it helped someone.
You saved a life with that blood I am sure of it... thank you for valiant effort miss It's nice to hear a another good thing that came from the crash 😊
Who know blood which should be alarming can be something to save for
@@jackthorton10 Thanks for your appreciation-I am 65 and have donated 6 gallons since I was 30. I always pray it will get to whom needs it. Best wishes-
@@debmoadd
I think you performed a service comparable to military personnel.
I salute you and all other donors (of course, the people handling the donations and administering them should get an applause too).
@@stevemc01 Thank you! I'm 65 years old and just hit the 6 gallon mark for donations. I so appreciate your comments-
That british airway Flight 9 is a very unique case. I watch the episode. The smoke was from a nearby volcano eruption in Indonesia and it seem the plane entered an area filled with volcano smoke. They made it back, do not worry. Everyone survived. They were on the way to australia.
yeah i knew that and im british
It needed resurfaced and cleaned.
@@Maven0666 the entire airframe was sandblasted, unclogging the engines cost more expensive than buying a new engine
@@waone28 Exactly
Correct and it’s good now they have volcanic eruptions on radars😀😀
It’s always a relief when a survivor or the captain gets interviewed
lol

Ikkk
For those wondering. At 21:45 the crew had entered a cloud of volcanic ash that had come from Mount Galunggung. It entered and started to clog the engines. Causing them to shut down.
I saw this story on RUclips, but thank you for the information.
I came to the comments to find out this exact thing. Why the video didn't explain, I don't know. But thank you!
Oh cool
@@11Whovian it’s from a show called air disasters
The title says bad weather plane crashes but BA 9 made a safe emergency landing they did fly into bad weather though but were able to get back to Jakarta.
Spending Christmas day watching plane crashes, good times.
EDIT: Merry Christmas everyone
Yes im watching them too
Same here
TacticalBinbag merry Christmas
Pan am 103 crashed(blown up) a few days before Christmas, very sad.
RIP Jerry Chandler (1948-2019). He was one of the best -- and among the most knowledgeable -- aviation reporters in the industry He's absolutely right when he says, "if there is one crash ... that made things safer, because we learned from it, it was Delta 191." It had the biggest impact on airline safety in at least a decade.
Of course it's also true that we can, and should, learn from every crash -- no matter how big or small -- as long as we have the resources to figure out what went wrong and, if possible, how to prevent if from happening again.
CDC:dont travel this christmas.
Smithsonian: here's plane crashes all month lol

I like how they all wore the belts at the same time. Pro mode on
That flight crew is actually legendary. They tackled those unknown circumstances and made some really good decisions. The engines came back and they landed in Jakarta.
Delta 191 was preceded 10 years earlier by another microburst crash-Eastern 66 at JFK Airport in New York (not sure if this program has ever outlined that crash). Those two crashes led to wind shear detection on planes and at airports.
As far as I'm aware, Eastern 66 hasn't been referenced or mentioned in any Mayday episodes.
Well, Merry Christmas to you too, Smithsonian. Guess I'll reconsider flying this Christmas, since you insist. lol
Yep, top of my feed! Clearly Smithsonian are full of the Christmas cheer!!!
Im literally flying next week :')
@@Nikhil9707 I did the same thing a couple years ago, binged a bunch of these before a flight I had to Hong Kong, didn't bother me one bit, thankfully😜😇
Ah, 2020, the year that an Iranian missile shot a Ukrainian passager plane, killing over 200 people with no survivors. Thanks for reminding me...
@@shawndouglass2939 flying is safer than riding a car but if u get caught up chances of survival is very low 😭
All of these crashes caused incredible pain . Peace to the survivors. we must learn from these accidents and ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure in many cases.
I still remember that day when Air Florida flight 90 accident happened. It was right in front of my eyes. It was horrible to see it. I always pray God to keep the passengers soul in peace. Really I can not forget the tragedy.
Really sad that the German investigators somewhat cherry-picked the evidence to make it appear that ice on the wings had caused the crash of BEA 609, and then afterwards refused to admit that they made a mistake and continued to blame the Captain. Even after the British PM had exonerated the Captain of any responsibility, the German investigators still held that he was responsible and the airline never re-hired the Captain.
So sad that his life was cut short by a heart attack a few years after 😥
Stuff like this happens all the time. Watch the video "first Medal of Honor ever recorded". The US Navy Seals tried to prevent USAF Seargent Chapman from receiving the Medal of Honor, because it would mean admitting that Navy Seals left a man behind and didn't help him. Just out of pure Ego.
Same for British Airways Flight 009.
The 747 managed to make it out with no casualties, and landed safely at Jakarta.
The investigation kept going. They found out it was slush on the runway. Physics.

Flowers of Manchester ♥️ never forgotten never will. #GGMU
The problem here is that BA9 didn't crash at all, it was beautifully landed by amazing pilots from a very respectable airline.
They had to include it cause it’s called MayDay. Not air crash investigation. A volcano is not safe to fly through and they do affect weather.
Yeah..but is it bad I thought the blue stuff was pretty
These are like trailers without any clear endings. I’m outta here
These *are* just 8 trailers in a compilation, I believe many or if not all can be found on their main or subsidiary channels in their individual form.
Right behind ya!
This isnt an Airport.... no need to announce your departure
British Air Flight 9 actually survived the incident. Every single person survived. One of the passengers even wrote a book on the incident, and eventually married a fellow passenger who was seated in front of her. That's so insane and so cool.
Thank you for the information. I was going to Google it.
Between these videos and all the car crash videos.. I've decided to just stay home..forever.
I'd be more afraid of driving than flying. they make programmes about the 1 plane that crashes, not about the 100s that land fine. you're still extremely unlikely to ever find yourself in a plane crash, whereas I've already been in 5 car crashes, 3 of which could have been fatal!
I love watching videos of thunderstorms and then I listen to music I like like delta parole or metallica! Nothing better and more relaxing like that!
These videos are super addicting someone help 😭😭😭

Australian flyers when it comes to snow and ice: whats that?
I can confirm that I'm Australian and I have never seen snow or ice before
@@GoodnightFromHim Oof man that sucks, i used to live in tasmania and got to go and see the snow for a bit but now im in the heat up north in qld
It's odd that Australia doesn't get cold weather despite being so close to the south Pole.
I'm not an expert on this or Australian to know why, so can anyone explain this please? Thank you.
@@aliencyborg3660 I used to live in Tasmania and we got snow ontop of some mountains but now im in QLD i haven't seen snow or felt that cold since Canberra, It's because Australia spans so far from the south pole that it has a tropical climate up north and a more wet and cold climate down south past Coffs Harbour and Canberra

Never been this quick, since I was born.
Just in time for all the Christmas flights this year!!! Merry Christmas all :)
May god rest all the souls of the people who died in these plane crashes.i send my condolences to their families and friends.xx
If you're going to do these kinds of videos with the details like you do, PLEASE include the cause of crash in each one!
You're only leaving people confused because you end it and then go immediately onto to the next scenario and people think they're still watching the one before!
This is the dumbest way to present a compilation.
A lot of people agree with you-and you're right, a little narrative flow from one episode to another would have helped.
I agree
Although I do agree with you, I think the goal of the channel is to get you to either pay for the season or at least the episode. 🤷🏼♀️ But a teensy bit of information would've gone a long way with this choppy compilation.
first off its a teaser you have to pay for the full videos on amazon
Agree. They didn’t do continental 1713 right. It goes from the plane being ready to take off then right to the next. Very confusing!
Of these 8, British Air Flight 9 is the only one I know of that DIDN'T crash.
Harry Gregg, the goalkeeper of Manchester United, just passed away within this past year, on 2-16-20.

i love that guy that says WAY UP
Damn 191 might not have been bad if he was 40 feet to the right.
It looks like the people that where in the back survived it just broke off
Gotta love the narrator's voice
He has a *DEEP* voice
I was near the Florida Flight 90 crash. I watched them pull the survivors out. Very sad.
In "Icy Wings: Arrow Air Flight 1285", there's more to it than that. They'd de-iced without letting Tower know, then moved into a take-off spot without Tower approval. The flight waited another 20-25 min until they were cleared to take off, but by then they had even more ice since the weather was so bad.
That atc controller has some drip
I suggest going on a plane on a day with good weather, or perhaps if ur going far a week or more for a safer flight
That delta 191 captain saw that microburst coming you can tell by the way he said your gonna loose it all of a sudden
Sometimes Mistakes are lessons learned too late
Anyone start binging these types of videos lately?
Yup but now hella scared to go on a plane now 🥺😭
In February 1991 I was coming back from Then West Germany and landing there at Dallas Fort Worth airport the plane as we came closer to the airport dropped 10 maybe 15 feet. First thing I thought was here is another flight 191. We landed ok but man made my heart stop for a second. Last time I flew on a plane was 1996 and haven't flown since. Haven't needed to be anywhere farther than I can drive, plus to damn expensive.
is it out of fear? stopping after a bad experience can often harden the bad memory and lead to fear. the whole getting back on the saddle thing
On the first one , are the fuel tanks near the runway ? , if so WHY?
Coming from Africa or Europe if you're running out of fuel you have to go to Gander!!!
It's a refueling stop but it's also an emergency landing spot for both Europe and Africa.
Atlanta day when we were running out of food coming from the Canary Islands: unbelievable
Headwinds.
Hey what happened to the flight with seroiuse emergency,, headed towards Australia with the engines flamed out..?
Who all are survived are very lucky
Some dead
Suggestion how about Planes that crashed due to mechanical error
It’s so sad that the first officer got killed by a guy that has anger issues, the first officer could had such a nice life but it just got took away by a no life, I’m so angry 😡

Mentour gives a full rendition of it. Be patient.
They shoud like make a "No building zone" Around the runway so if theres any plane that cant made to the runway they can land at the grass and not hit a building
For some cities, if that rule was made, there would be no runway because its already too developed, most airports are built AFTER the city is already developed
@@Alb410 ooohhh...well now i feel stupid sorry
24:10 RIP Manchester United Players
Volcanic ash is by far the worst thing you could possibly fly through. It sandblasts the paint off, scratches the cockpit windshield, damages compressor blades, and, worst of all, melts and turns to goop as it passes through the combustion stage of the engines only to re-solidify and jam the engine shaft, causing engines that ingest it to fail. That was why European airspace was grounded in 2010 when Eyjafallajökull blew, but it was Speedbird 9 that taught us this lesson.
Well, I think you have to add *"Sriwijaya Air"* into your compilation.

There isn’t an Air Crash Investigation episode on that yet so they can’t
@@royal__twistt12cringealert91 the fact that this show is still on the air baffles me, because this series has been on since 2003 with 20 seasons.
@@jupitersmoon3033 It's not really that crazy of a fact.
1. This show animates the crashes so people find it interesting almost automatically
2. There will always be plane crashes meaning there will always be something to investigate and talk about hence infinite content
Smithsonian, it's Christmas. Still watching it though.

Hehehehe
To clear it up, you should not be scared to fly, your chances to crash is 1 in 12 million
I dunno if that’s true but that does calm me down a little tiny bit

Okay only if the flight crew had some cameras to get that light show on tape
They were flying through volcanic ash I think- pretty sure I saw that episode before. Yeah- would be cool to see what they saw huh? I bet they were terrified- I would've been. I think I would've been looking for a way out of it but, I don't think they really had time to do that before problems started.
So the caused of North Link Flight 5719 is Pilot error but FROM captain not first officer.
3:26 That’s actually not too bad with that kind of crash!!! HOLY CRAP!!!!!!!!
Disjointed video -- some of the stories don't have a proper ending, then suddenly another accident story is started.
Fun fact: BA009 didnt crash, they made it to the airport and got all the engines working again.
If I'm not mistaken the Gander crash was due to unclaimed weight on the plane, not weather.
Both were factors.
Both. There was ice on the wings too. Caused a stall. Loss of lift.
At the family Christmas party while on the couch watching this on Christmas.
Weird lol merry Christmas everyone.
I'm a day late but Merry Christmas to you also Chris😜😇
So, what was that blue glow and how did it all end? This whole video is disjointed.
It was volcanic ash, and the engines inhaled that dusted and fried them
The video was disjointed because it was a compilation of different episodes/crashes caused by weather conditions.
The plane landed safely .. The engines were back again once they left the ashes .. 😇
@@gregoriusbayuaji7962 thank you!

On this plane were Don Estridge, an American computer engineer who led development of the original IBM Personal Computer (PC), and thus is known as the "father of the PC revolution". His decisions dramatically changed the computer industry, resulting in a vast increase in sales of personal computers, thus creating an entire industry of hardware manufacturers of IBM PCs. Steve Jobs offered Estridge a multimillion-dollar job as president of Apple Computer but he declined. Estridge and wife Mary Ann were killed in the crash of Delta Air Lines Flight 191 at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport on August 2, 1985. He was 48 years old. The Estridges were survived by their four daughters. At the time of his death, IBM ESD, which included the development and manufacturing of the IBM PC, PC DOS, PC LAN and TopView, had nearly 10,000 employees and had sold over a million PCs.

When that British flight 7 episode was playing every time they interviewed someone i whould allways see "Da flight Bob" instead of "BA flight 009"
Is sick how you bring us to the end of the chair/bed only to move to the next planestance
I remember the flight 191 crash.
A lot of people dont remember that before this crash we had never heard of wind shear.
New Yorkers had heard of it because of Eastern Airlines flight 66 which crashed just short of JFK runway 22L a decade earlier (killing 113 of 124 on board). With those two flights and Pan Am 739 in New Orleans, wind shear detection on planes and on the ground near airports became commonplace.
Hopefully the actors in these Smithsonian videos are keeping their regular jobs.
Yeah. The writers should keep their day jobs too.
Of course the best thing to have at the end of a runway is tree lines, fences, buildings or, even better, fuel tanks. What could possibly go wrong ? Why not clear the ends of runways for another 1000 meters just for a relatively smooth landing or take off overshoot ?
21:45
The plane looks like it just entered Hyperspace all of a sudden.
I came to the comments looking for this
Damn I was just as confused as they were...
Nice
does anyone know what happened to the 747 flight?
Which flight was on intro?
191 is a flight curse: Delta - DFW, American - Chicago, Comair- Lexington, KY. And of course 911.
(Note: Comair was Flight 5191 because it used four flight numbers).
I m wondering if the planes were burned then how the recordings have been saved?
Pull your nose up to 25 degrees add full power to the mechanical stops leave gear and flaps where they were until you are safe of ground clutter congratulations you just saved your life. Better yet stay out of Thunderstorms altogether.

aircraft can't get more speed on the B1 stage can't get lift should have emergency catapult for the aircraft hook like they do on a carrier is that possible??
Had that tank not been there, delta 191 would’ve probably been ok.
True :(
It had already bounced onto the freeway north of the airport (killing a driver, and the person in the car behind later committed suicide). So it was damaged before hitting the tank.
