Supply and demand. Right now there are very few honest, high-quality handymen/craftsmen. If you are an honest, high-quality handyman/craftsman, charge a huge premium, you will get it.

This whole discussion reminds me of story a friend told me. He said he was working at Blockbuster Video in college and the girl he was dating quit to go back to McDonald’s. The supervisor made this snide remark about her flipping burgers as though that wasn’t a real job and that Blockbuster was some great career choice. That Blockbuster Video is long gone and yet McDonalds is still around.

Maybe its my imagination, but as the caller got off the phone, after Dave said he was proud of him, it seemed like he was choked up or teared up a bit. It was probably refreshing for him to hear encouragement instead of guilt.

OMG! That's so true! Working for a company is the same as working for yourself except you have only one customer. Personally, I'd like to diversify.

I get this too, except my issue is going on as I'm building my skills. I keep hearing things like "That's a huge risk" "You shouldn't do it" etc. I'm not gonna list them all here cause this would ramble on forever. Now I'm in my 30's so I'm a little late to the game but I'm not letting that stop me, and I'm obviously not going to jump ship from my regular job until I get the money rolling in. But I think this whole thing comes from the fact that the average American is used to the same old worn out routine of getting up and working for some boss you hate in some soul crushing job where you moving up is based on how many a$$ you kiss. Scraping and crawling for crumbs, feeling miserable all the while. This kid is smarter than i was at 25, so he can go out and get his. He should use all the negativity he receives as fuel to the fire and be even more determined to be successful. I would say "jam his success down their throats'" but that's not exactly mature, just laugh your way to the bank kid.

I've always hated the term "get a real job" a job is a Job anyway you slice it, whether it has paid benefits or not. If you get paid to do something, it's a job. Don't tell me to get a real job just because I don't work for a big corporate company. I think being and independent contractor is great.

I don't see the issues either. It should be noted his previous employer paid him half what he is making now maybe because he didn't have the same experience at the time.

Do Yourself a favor too! Live like you did on that old salary and save half as long as YOU can! We lived on between 1/4 and 1/2 of my husband's salary and we bought a house and paid it off fast and got two new cars ( for the warranties ). As for now we're all set!

I got laid off by a big company just because I was over 40, easy button anyone, and so did a lot of others. I work for private employers now and I love it. Stay out of that corporate world man, it's not any good.

The caller is running into misconceptions by people around him. Has he told them he’s making twice as much as he did with his previous employer?
1994 was the only year that I had my solo lawn service full time. I remember one day in church people congratulating me and talking to me like I was rich and making a lot of money. Truth was that I was barely keeping up with my bills even with a $300 a month apartment and an inexpensive storage garage for my lawn equipment. I think I told at least one of the people congratulating me “no, I’m barely keeping up with my bills as I have lots of competition in this town”. I moved away the next year.

The problem with working for a company is that they dictate all of the terms. When you work for yourself, you dictate the terms. I made as much on a side job as I did on my 40 hour a week job with a company, so had double income. Eventually, I decided to work solely for myself. It wasn't until I got older and didn't want to work so hard, that I went back to working part time for a company (on my terms) and part time on my side job. I think everyone should have what they call a side hustle or a home based business of some sort, especially for the tax benefits.
