  • The goal was to improve upon my previous attempt ( • Aluminium Etching with... ) when etching aluminium and in this case brass too.
The process was very similar, but I used a different toner transfer paper with the same printer. After the print was done I sanded and pre-etched the metals with ferric chloride (FeCl3). Once the pre-etching was complete I cleaned everything and used a 3D printer mat to transfer the mask. Since the mask wasn't fully transferred on every spot, I used a permanent marker and some nail polish to cover the exposed areas. Finally I etched the two metals and sanded the result down with different grits.
If you want to replicate my results, please be very careful, follow the safety precautions of each of the chemicals used and do so at your own risk. Here are the links to the most important things I used:

Cool! You can also fill in the etched areas with nail polish and scrape away the excess with an old credit card

I tried aluminum etching last night and after 2 minutes it started bubbling and got real thick I got scared. Will it explode on me. It never etched as I took out my metal after 3 mins. So it’s the aluminum that causes this reaction.

Nicely produced clip. Photo-resist will give far superior results. The color and foaming of the Ferric Chloride lead me to think you've added some nitric acid to it.

Can I do this with silver?

A bit over complicated I'd say. There are much better ways applying photo resist. And yes I do photo etching.

Ferric chloride is used as a coagulant in wastewater processes

why did you etch the plates before putting on the design?

The idea was to make the surface rougher so that the toner would stick better...

Did the idea work? I am just starting to try this. I had good luck with printing on label sheets with the labels removed and then ironing the page onto the brass sheet.

It would have worked better with some Al DiMeola!
