Nice video Can you tell me ,can i do the same etching with electricity and salt water on aluminum like yours ??? And can you tell me how many times I can use the same ferric chloride??? Thank you
So you are yanking the aluminum plate out of the ferric chloride bath every minute because it gets hot from the reaction. You are cooling the thing in cold water and scrubbing the left over gunk with a toothbrush, then repeating the process. I was wondering if this method is suitable for delicate intaglio etching on aluminum that is much thinner. Guess I will see. My only worry is the asphaltum resist I am using might fail if temp is an issue. Wondering if some good old enamel lacquer might do the trick instead.
what is that stencil you are using? how did you get it made? It sticks to metals really well or what? I am trying to do that same thing and the only solution i came up with is to get some vinyl and a vinyl cutter...
Would you be able to use a 3d print as a resist in order to save material? Or maybe wood. Not sure if it will eat through it. Trying to etch .25 inch stainless steel using the salt water electro etching method. Thanks.
.. one of the best time lapse vids i hv come across & of coz the OMG a fantastic etching work .. could hv added sub for info of the processes .. neway, tQ.
Awesome video, thank you!!! One question I have as I'm trying to figure out the best way to do a project similar to yours is what materials are you using to create the transfer? Also it looks like your using simple packing tape on the back to prevent etching?
7 лет назад+6
To transfer the image I use "transfer foil for vinyl cut graphics" But I'm not sure if this is the exact translation. I have a foil from graphic studio where I let cut out the stickers. For covering the back side you can use any tape. It is there purely to seal the surface is not etched.
Could you suggest me a video of making good and effective ferric chloride because I think my ferric chloride is not working well because it's not giving texture every where and not giving same texture as your gives .... kindly suggest me good video for making ferric chloride ...

Hi . I made it out of duralumin. I don't know the alloy designation, I found it in the scrap. This procedure will work with any aluminum alloy. Yes the sign can be used outdoors. Similarly, I made name badges for the doorbell.
So I tried this today with a small 32mm diameter aluminium disc that was 2mm thick. I cleaned it with acetone first then sat it in ferric chloride but it didn't seem to bubble like that and doesn't seem to have done much. What have I done wrong.
6 лет назад+2
Hi . Did you use pure aluminum or anodized? If the surface of the aluminum is anodised it is not possible to etching.
Matěj Novák I thought it was just pure aluminium but maybe it did have a coating of some kind on it. I never sanded over it first as I thought it was just clean aluminium. Maybe next time I will try that first. It has etched it a little bit but it took all day and didn't look close to the effect you got with yours. My ferric chloride says 40% is that strong enough.
6 лет назад+1
Yes it is possible that there was some coating on aluminum. The etching of pure aluminum takes place quite quickly. The chloride concentration you use is good. Try clean aluminum and it will work.
hlo dear your video is so nice. but i have 1 question with you and my question is Can we reuse ferric chloride? if we can so how many time we can use? please help me dear i want to start this work I hope you rply me as soon as possible thnks dear

Hi . This is not what we can say in general. When etching smaller items, chloride can be used several times. When etching bigger items, life is shortened.
Hi, I tried on aluminum but it took almost 10 min for 0.30mm dip etching. What should be concentration of FECL3? What’s etching process for Stainless Steel of different grades?
6 лет назад+1
Hello . 0.3 mm in 10 minutes is normal. I do not know the concentration of ferric chloride, I buy the finished mixed solution. For etching stainless steel try Electrolysis. Batteries and salt water. But I do not know if it will work I did not try it.
@@a4ajit I etch stainless steel all the time with ferric chloride. Same process this guy used. I cut a stencil and put the ferric chloride on there anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes. Then I put baking soda on it to stop the reaction and then wash it with water. I don't paint mine after though.
you rock Matej! can you help me with some details: how long did you leave it in ferric chloride?, why did you rinse it several times?, what paint did you use? and what solution did you use for cleaning the paint from the untouched surfaces?
7 лет назад+10
Thanks pleased me your interest. I let it etch 30-60 seconds. Then it rinse with clean water. Rinse with it due cooling because heat is generated during etching. And on the surface of iron settles, it will remove tooth brush so that the etched surface was not bumps. I am using plain color spray paint. To remove color using water sandpaper, grit 280.
Was this piece of aluminum anodized? Also would ferric chloride affect the results if I used a vinyl stencil? I am wanting to do the chrome strips on the side of my truck but im not sure if it will work and Its hard to find intact aluminum pieces for a 73 shortbed f100

Sorry i'm late. aluminum must be clean. If aluminum is anodized it will not work. The chloride template does not affect the template. However, care should be taken for temperature and thin or sharp shapes. They tend to peel off.
What is ferric chloride used for in the house hold?
7 лет назад
Occasionally etching printed circuit boards. Ferric chloride that can not be used for copper etching is used for etching aluminum.
7 лет назад+2
I'm sorry I probably wrote it vaguely. I use the same iron chloride for both copper and aluminum. Ferric chloride is capable of etching a certain amount of copper, and then copper is incapable of etching. This (used) ferric chloride is then used for etching aluminum.
Tanx a lot for information.Just one more question, how long time i need for this deep?
7 лет назад
Time etching can not say exactly. Heat is created during etching. Larger etched surface creates more heat. And the warmed etching bath. How bath has higher temperature by the aluminum etches faster. Etch 30 seconds to 1 minute after the aluminum plate put into cold water to cool, tooth brush gently clean the etched surface and give another etch. Repeat this process until etched surface will have the desired depth. I repeated this about 6 times me to get to the depth of 0.15 mm.
How thick is your alumin sheet, and how many times you can use the same ferric chloride solution???
7 лет назад+1
The minimum thickness of the aluminum plate is about 1 cm. I used a 2mm thick plate. I can not say how many times the same solution can be used. It always depends on how large the surface you are etching. Logo JD what is in the video could be etched about 5 times.
Sound of fast forwarding is terrible. I recommend cutting the audio out or do some explanation of what you’re doing and the products you use. This is not really a tutorial as much it is you showing off what you can do. Nice job though on the sign.
The title doesn't say it's a tutorial although that's what I was looking for. Still found this helpful although it would be useful to have details of the chemicals involved.
Aluminum must not be immersed in ferric chloride for too long. Otherwise, it will overheat and bath starts to foam. Aluminum immerse in chloride for a maximum of 30s. Then rinse in cold water and immerse again in chloride. Repeat it until the pattern is etched deep enough.
t was then that happened because I'm looking for a way to make a deep solder in the metal, I got the copper and the brass but I wanted something even deeper, I saw some techniques with salt and vinegar using 12v batter and pile too, thank you.

ferric chloride? did you dip it in water and baking soda to stop the process before you re-etch?
To cool down and stop etching. Soak the aluminum plate only into clean water . I do not use baking powder.

should i heat the chloride ? because it changed the color only , what can i do ???
No . Do not heat ferric chloride. Etching would take place very quickly. Chloride should have room temperature. The etching heats itself
