  • BUT I USE FOOD TO NUMB - LIFE AFTER DIETS PODCAST EPISODE 80
This week Sarah and Stef are talking about using food as a way to numb. The conversation turns to:
Numbing via eating and numbing via restriction
Do binges make us “not feel” or feel more?
Stef’s recollection of numbing in London circa 2000
The feeling that tomorrow it will be different.
Connection to break the numbing cycle
Somatic practices, embodiment, checking in with the body
Difficulty with empty time, in the gaps of life
Numbing doesn’t exist in a vacuum; food can numb AND do other things like provide comfort, soothe boredom, etc
    Low level existential blah
How did Stef & Sarah stop needing to numb?

Appreciate the time you both take to help people dive deeper into what's behind our behaviors to aid us in the healing process. I have been on both ends of numbing. I have numbed with food and I have numbed with restriction. Numbing for me would be an escape from dealing with processing life and reality or my thoughts about myself, didn't want to process. Restriction caused a reprieve from lack of self confidence I think and not having to deal with underlying self doubt or dislike. The funny thing is, I spent my younger years dealing with some bingeing and using food to escape from early on in life and then from a young adult to and older adult (40s now) I have been in restriction for decades realizing that all along I may have transferred some of the same insecurities to a different problem! For a year and almost a half I have for the first time implemented intuitive eating. I have been dealing with weight gain, trusting my body, letting go, learning to enjoy who I am and not controlling my appearance etc... Thankfully I no longer binge, I have found freedom from that but my current wrestling has been getting away from restrictions and I think I'm growing. I no longer need to 'control' the girl who binged or restricted, it's time for me to just be! ☺️Thank you two so much for your work❤️
