    Addictive. Not only because of his wonderful rendition of the aria, but also because of her top-notch acting. It's like a visual counterpoint to his masterful singing, making it even more enjoyable. Look at it from any standpoint, nothing can be added to - or taken from - this masterpiece to make it more charming than it is.

    • @fancifulfilly
      @fancifulfilly 4 года назад +32

      Mozart's music speaks more than words could ever express. Therein lies both the comic, and the tragic, as well as the poignantly heart rending. One would have to be tone deaf to rely on the "text" of the libretto to gather its intent. And similarly, to miss it. That said, Lorenzo Da Ponte was a genius in his own right. His interpretation of the second French play in Beaumarchais's "Figaro" trilogy is quite different, but it was a good call for Da Ponte and Mozart to steer away from the tragic aspects and keep it light-hearted. There was no shortage of tragic opera as it was.

    ******
    You won't go any more, amorous butterfly,
    Fluttering around inside night and day
    Disturbing the sleep of beauties,
    A little Narcissus and Adonis of love.
    You won't have those fine feathers any more,
    That light and jaunty hat,
    That hair, that shining aspect,
    That womanish red color [in your face]!
    Among soldiers, by Bacchus!
    A huge moustache, a little knapsack,
    Gun on your back, sword at your side,
    Your neck straight, your nose exposed,
    A big helmet, or a big turban,
    A lot of honour, very little pay.
    And in place of the dance
    A march through the mud.
    Over mountains, through valleys,
    With snow, and heat-stroke,
    To the music of trumpets,
    Of bombards, and of cannons,
    Which, at every boom,
    Will make bullets whistle past your ear.
    Cherubino, go to victory!
    To military glory!

      @Leonardo's Truth Sometimes it's hard to remember that she is playing a young man. That is the tradition of "trouser roles", which has been done since Handel's time. Suspending belief to accept a woman playing a young man is no different than believing people fall in love in 15 seconds or sing after being stabbed and dying. But, Leonardo, thank you for being sensitive to the fact that so many women are assaulted and this should not be made light of.

      Ma la vogliamo dire una parola sull'autore dei versi Lorenzo Da Ponte. Ha creato con mirabile naturalezza uno schema sonoro ricco di allitterazioni e consonanze che danno vita a un movimento continuo e circolare sul quale s'innesta la musica di Mozart. Da Ponte trasfigura le parole di Beaumarchais con quadri lampeggianti: l'effeminato damerino frequentatore delle alcove e delle anticamere signoril (che ben conosceva il poeta)i; poi guerra faticosa, il fango,, i colpi di fucile, di cannone; finendo con la parodia della gloria militare salutata dal clamore delle trombe. Parodia perfetta del gran secolo che muore, alla vigilia della rivoluzione Figaro l'eroe del secolo futuro celebra l'epitaffio del Settecento.

      Un Figaro immenso sia per la voce nonché la sua capacità di attore , da notare il cambio della preposizione nel finale che può permetterselo in quanto lui. Peccato che nel film di Losley non abbia espresso le sue capacità recitative, forse anche su imposizione del regista, ma tant'é vero che il suo don Giovanni era inespressivo troppo teso meno giocoso.

      @thomasborgsmidt9801 6 лет назад

      Figaro depend so much on Susanna. A Cecilia Bartoli can steal any scene with her eyebrows. Bryn Tervel is good though. In that opera Rosina is the mysterious one: Why does she put up with that oaf: Almaviva?

  • @fancifulfilly
    @fancifulfilly 4 года назад +6

    Frederica Von Stade was a marvelous Cherubino. This particular piece, with its march tempo and Figaro's light hearted delivery gives the impression that Cherubino will be a soldier for awhile in the Count's army and eventually go back to civilian life. Mozart never even hints at the tragedy that will befall him in the sequel play, because he wanted "Figaro" to be a comic opera. Alas, Cherubino never got to enjoy civilian life again. Cherubino was about 14 in "Figaro", and had a huge crush on Contessa Rosina. In the 3rd play of Beaumarchais's trilogy, (La Mere Coupable), events take a turn for the tragic when Cherubino's passion for Rosina turned out to be way more than a crush, and his devotion and attentiveness become a comfort to the beautiful Rosina, who is continuously betrayed by her philandering, no-count, Count. 2 years later, Cherubino fathers Rosina's son, and the rotter of a count sends him off to battle again, only this time he never returns. The onetime dandy, pretty boy, and "amorous butterfly", becomes a proper soldier, but then is killed in the Count's service at the tender age of 16, and the grieving Rosina has only his son to console her in her sorrow.
    This scene is still comical, but it's never quite the same after reading about Cherubino's eventual fate.
