James Avery is so underrated. Man he was ahead of his time. Oroku Saki, Jim Rhodes during season 1 of Iron Man the Animated Series, The crossover with Spider-Man The Animated Series reprising his role as Jim Rhodes, then Jim Rhodes meeting future Jim Rhodes in season 1 of Fresh Prince of Bel Air with Don Cheadle were just memorable.
Like Peter Cullen is to Optimus Prime, Frank Welker to Megatron, Sean Schemmel to Goku, Kevin Conroy to Batman, Mark Hammil to Joker and the list goes on and on. James Avery will always be the true voice of the Shredder.
It's amazing who you listen to as a kid and then make a connection to them. Like: "OMG! That guy voiced that guy?!" RIP James Avery. Part of everybody's childhood. :( :'(
RIP James Avery You played a big part in our childhood...kids of the 80s and 90s. I'll always remember you as The Shredder and Uncle Phil. Shredder was so intimidating as a villain even though the show was a cartoon. As kids, we were easily influenced...and it was definitely a positive influence. God bless.
I miss him. He and Tony Jay had such awesome rich voices. Thankfully, we still have Keith David, Kevin Michael Richardson, Jim Cummings, and Rob Paulsen.
@ David and Shiirow Especially that time when Will and Carlton get arrested. You can hear the Shredder in him come out when he lays into the deputies. O_o
Obviously Uncle Phil and the Shredder are iconic, but he did a spot-on impression of the Junk Yard Dog on Hulk Hogan's Rock N' Wrestling. If I didn't know he was the voice actor, I would have assume he was the JYD himself.
James Avery is favorite actor I watch him on tv in the fresh prince of bel air who play as Uncle Phil and that was the first I saw him in person on tv he was the master of voice acting career he play the voices of Junk Yard Dog, James Rhode aka War Machine and The Shredder. He did a great job for playing those characters. It already been 5 years since James Avery pass away in 2013. Rest in Peace James Avery thank for the memories you give us we all love you and we all gonna miss you. R.I.P. Uncle Phil.
James Avery was a man of man talents but his iconic role of Uncle Phill from The Fresh Prince Of Belair has made him a household name. R.I.P to the incredibly talented James Avery.
I grew up watching TMNT and Fresh Prince, and I didn't make the connection till a few years ago that Uncle Phil was Shredder! My mind was so blown lol.

When I found out that James Avery provided the voice of Shredder on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, I was like well it's no wonder that Uncle Phil was strict with Will. One other thing, James Avery also provided the voice of the Judge Ghost on the episode of The Real Ghostbusters titled Jailbusters.
Such a spot on impression of the junkyard dog almost thought it was actually JYD himself lol. RIP James Avery/Uncle Phil such a talented man both live action and animation.

Wow, just saw a post on FB about him being the shredder, had to look it up. Woah so many different feelings happening right now. TMNT, Gargoyles and The Real Ghostbusters, Spiderman
Yeah he was no Billy West or Dan ( Homer Simpson etc) as far as versatility , he was more like Joe Di Magio , but his character voice and variations of it worked well for the characters he portrayed.
I remember watching Ninja Turtles & Fresh Prince around the same time when I was young & had no idea of the connection. What a brilliant & underrated actor!!
I grew up on 80's TMNT as a kid. After all these years, I had no idea the guy who played uncle phil, Voiced one of the greatest villains in TMNT. I learned that it was him through an old nostalgia critic episode. RIP James avery. No one made a better shredder than you!
I used to get hyped up over Shredders voice when watching the animated series.......tried imitating his voice and it wore out my larynx after about 5 seconds........😄
James Avery was also the acting voice of Pro Wrestling cartoon JYD Junkyard Dog from "Hulk Hogan's Rock 'n Wrestling" on CBS Ch. 2 back in 🗽 when I was 4 as a 🇭🇹n-🇺🇸n autistic wrestling fan.

James Avery can never be replaced as Shredder.

I agree, but Kevin Michael Richardson wasn't half-bad though
I watched fresh prince and the best tmnt imo. And I never connected the dots. 🤪
@@charlespennie3621 Kevin is definitely the guy to carry James Avery's legacy.

I didn't know James/Uncle Phil voiced more than one character (other than Shredder).
I am surprised Reginald/Carl Winslow didn't voice any characters.
Don't forget about Turbo from Rambo.
@Albert Schiesser And has a short temper.
I had NO idea this man was such a prolific voice actor. I was today years old when I learned that he played Shredder. 🤯
@Marco Castillo She who?
@Marco Castillo Oh cool. What character?
@Marco Castillo Wow, awesome. Thanks for the trivia.
I’m 44 and love the turtles and never knew he was shredder

Lisa Ortiz as Lina Inverse.
I didn't know Uncle Phil had that many VA roles under his belt. Clearly I haven't been paying enough attention...
GrandmasterDevo 3:47 fist of the north star, wow.
I grew up with this mans voice lol
He did a lot of things, he was a stage actor as well
His two biggest roles were the voice of Shredder from "TMNT (1987)" and Judge Phillip Banks a.k.a. Uncle Phil from "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air".
Me too ✋
It's amazing who you listen to as a kid and then make a connection to them. Like: "OMG! That guy voiced that guy?!"

RIP James. You were a good dad with Will and you did a good job on “TMNT” doing the voice of “Shredder”. We will never forget you 🙏
His voice is so powerful
Well he did a very distinctive voice of the Shredder, not very much of a strong Japanese accent but still sounds dark and evil voice!
I had no idea Uncle Phil was in so many animated classics, especially Gargoyles. In the name of the Fresh Prince, YOU THE MAN UNCLE PHIL!
New Year’s Eve was the day he died when he suffered from surgery in Glendale, California, USA at the age of 68
