Josh Lopez that really sucked the day I found out that James Avery died. I'm not joking when I say this. I was shocked when I heard it on the news. I couldn't believe that it was true, that it actually happened. Not to take anything away from the rest of the cast, but James brought the best in everyone in the show that it couldn't been done any better by anybody else. I gasped to be honest. But this type of gasp is the one where you feel like you've been hit really hard in the chest and it's the worst thing someone could ever say to you. I was focused more on the look of hurt in Uncle Phil's face.

Only a true father would disregard his own feelings and do anything to protect his "son" even after his son off right rejects him and tells him "You are not my father" to his face and still give him a loving embrace in the sight of his severe anger, confusion, suffering, and tears. Even if this tragic emotions came from being naive. Uncle Phil was like a father to all of us growing up in the 90s. This is how you know that this was one of the best shows ever. Because it taught real values, conveyed real messages, it didn't feed us brain candy and keep us occupied, it made us pay attention. At the end of the day, this wasn't even really a TV show, it was an experience that most of us learned from and could relate to. We didn't feel like we were sitting on a couch watching a show, we felt like we were part of the Banks family. That's something you rarely find, if not never, in these days. Everything is so vapid now, nothing has any real substance or core values to it anymore.
Uncle Phil is a good example of how a person can be successful and cultured and still remember where they came from and what it took to get there. He wasn’t ashamed of being well off and reaping the benefits of his hard work, but he also acknowledged that there were others who didn’t have the opportunities that he had or the success he had, and he was willing to help and pay it forward. There are too many people who either think success is a moral failing and think someone who has succeeded has lost their roots, but there are also far too many who are well off and successful and take that as a barometer of how good a person they are and they rest on their laurels. My dad is a lot like uncle Phil and so was his dad. We’re white but they came from hard circumstances and they worked hard to make good for the next generation. My dad became successful but never stopped teaching me how important it was to use what you’ve earned and what was given to you to pay it forward and help others. That’s why I’ve always liked uncle Phil because he always tried to teach his kids the same lessons my dad taught me.

I was the same way in the Air Force. I learned more about how to be a leader from Captain Picard, and Colonel Potter, than the Air Force ever taught me. The shows may be fiction, but they're written by real people, and feature real lessons. If you only look for them.
James Avery was superb! The hurt expression he emoted when Will yelled at him that he wasn't his father and the love he showed when Will asked why his father didn't want him were 2 of my favorite scenes. Nobody could have done it any better.
The look on Phil’s face when Will screams; “you’re not my father!” Without saying a word he gets the message of “that’s not how i look at it. I’ve seen you as my son this whole time and that’ll never stop.” His eyes look so hurt and upset. Not quite angry, but almost angry. Brilliant actor portraying a phenomenal character. I love Uncle Phil.
This man (and the writers) made this character so iconic NOBODY could've ever done the role other than him and NOBODY will replace him in that role, referring to this drama reboot they're trying to do. None of the cast can be replaced or outdone in their roles because what this show had was lightening in a bottle. We don't get really great and iconic shows like this anymore.

Uncle Phil was truly an American original that can never be repeated or duplicated. He was a true father figure to those who starred on that show and those of us fans that tuned in every week to watch him. R.I.P. UNCLE PHIL MISSED AND LOVED BY THE WORLD
Well that's true he isn't going about that in the best manner possible. However, that's what makes this such a great episode, everyone is acting very real. You can see why they're all behaving the way that they do, and everything works.
Scenes like this are why Uncle Phil was such a fantastic character. Expecting accountability but showing absolute forgiveness and support. Very well done.
I really want to watch that episode, mainly because it shows both sides of that whole issue. Because as much as some people try to deny it, Adebola shows exactly how there *are* black people who *choose* to not let go of the past and move on, and that such black people are clearly part of the problem with problems when it comes to racial relations. Because what people like her don't realize is that when they *choose* to hold onto their resentment and *choose* to hate white people for whatever happened to them in the past, they're no better than a KKK member, but at least the KKK member would be more open and honest about being racist. I just think that everyone *needs* to just move past the stupid racial crap and let it all go, instead of allowing idiots to keep any of that crap alive.

Such a versatile actor. My favourite scene in this is when he looks at Vivienne through the mirror, telling her all the little ways in which he loves her. Encouraging her to see herself through his eyes. James Avery put his guts into Uncle Phil: his passion, determination and voice the desire we all have, the desire for equality. I remember him vividly in this show, and as the ever sarcastic villain Shredder in the Ninja Turtles. Even in 2020, it's difficult to believe that he's gone.
The hardest thing is having your kid ask you why their daddy doesn't want them :( My sons' birthfather left my kids and I to be with another woman. It hurt my heart to see my kids hurting and having to listen to them cry for him hurt even more. Now they're 9 and 11. They haven't seen him since they were babies nor has he made an effort to see them, call or send anything for their birthdays. They call my husband their dad because he has been there and took over the responsibility as their dad and he's all my youngest son knows as his dad. Anyone can lay down and have a baby but it takes a real man to raise them.
The average human isnt qualified to raise a kid even parents who are always in their kids life some kids would be better off if they were not. If you needed surgery would you want someone either unqualified or who doesnt want to do your surgery to perform surgery on you? It is an outdated concept their father could be doing the best for them not being there the only thing he should be required to do is pay half of their basic survival.
Real men earn the title Daddy. Uncle Phil was a wonderful example of a real man. I hope lots of young men learned how to work hard and protect what truly matter, from watching TV dads like Uncle Phil
In the end, the only thing a man can truly have is his family. In this I feel that I have been fortunate beyond measure as I see so much of my mother and father in Uncle Phil. They did their best to make me a good person. I never rolled around with gangs. I never used drugs. I never stayed out late, or got drunk. Thanks to them I stayed out of trouble...mostly. But when I didn’t, they punished me accordingly and ALWAYS made it stick. But most of all, they were always there for me. Every time. Thanks mom and dad.

I live in Glendale a few blocks away from the place where he passed away, and a few weeks before, I ran into him giving him a simple hello, and he reciprocated in kind. I didn't even know it was him until his passing a few weeks later. Right now, I wished i could've said to him, "You're the best father figure anyone could ask for." Thanks, Uncle Phil. As someone who grew up without a father and watched this show when it was originally aired, I always dreamed of having Uncle Phil as my dad. I learned more watching him on TV than I could have from anyone else!
I remember that but I didn't watch DS9 at the time, at least not as a fan. Years later sometime after the reboot came out I watched it and the other trek series' and DS9 is my favorite.

That whole "How come he don't want me" exchange still gives me chills. The fact that you can see James Avery breaking as Will is shouting is just heartbreaking. This was something that hit on a personal level, not just the characters.

1:35 my partner and I were having a conversation the other day about me needing to accept help sometimes. It's hard for me to accept help because I spent so many years believing help was just a transaction. Since someone helped me that meant I owed them. We ended up talking for hours about true help is done out of kindness and wanting other people to succeed at whatever their goal is. And we ended up talking about this exact moment because Uncle Phil explained it so perfectly
They changed the character was the problem the 2nd one did not come off like she would start a fight herself if she was pissed off enough and the first one certainly would of. The hate people have for the 2nd one is unfair due to the writers doing that to her unless they didnt think she could act well enough to do it.

Without saying a word he gets the message of “that’s not how i look at it. I’ve seen you as my son this whole time and that’ll never stop.” His eyes look so hurt and upset. Not quite angry, but almost angry. Brilliant actor portraying a phenomenal character. I love Uncle Phil.
That one facial expression proves how incredible his acting was.
His eyes show anger, but the hurt overtook it.
This man (and the writers) made this character so iconic NOBODY could've ever done the role other than him and NOBODY will replace him in that role, referring to this drama reboot they're trying to do. None of the cast can be replaced or outdone in their roles because what this show had was lightening in a bottle. We don't get really great and iconic shows like this anymore.

I really want to watch that episode, mainly because it shows both sides of that whole issue.
Because as much as some people try to deny it, Adebola shows exactly how there *are* black people who *choose* to not let go of the past and move on, and that such black people are clearly part of the problem with problems when it comes to racial relations.
Because what people like her don't realize is that when they *choose* to hold onto their resentment and *choose* to hate white people for whatever happened to them in the past, they're no better than a KKK member, but at least the KKK member would be more open and honest about being racist.

Such a versatile actor. My favourite scene in this is when he looks at Vivienne through the mirror, telling her all the little ways in which he loves her. Encouraging her to see herself through his eyes. James Avery put his guts into Uncle Phil: his passion, determination and voice the desire we all have, the desire for equality. I remember him vividly in this show, and as the ever sarcastic villain Shredder in the Ninja Turtles. Even in 2020, it's difficult to believe that he's gone.

The hardest thing is having your kid ask you why their daddy doesn't want them :( My sons' birthfather left my kids and I to be with another woman. It hurt my heart to see my kids hurting and having to listen to them cry for him hurt even more. Now they're 9 and 11. They haven't seen him since they were babies nor has he made an effort to see them, call or send anything for their birthdays. They call my husband their dad because he has been there and took over the responsibility as their dad and he's all my youngest son knows as his dad. Anyone can lay down and have a baby but it takes a real man to raise them.
The average human isnt qualified to raise a kid even parents who are always in their kids life some kids would be better off if they were not.
If you needed surgery would you want someone either unqualified or who doesnt want to do your surgery to perform surgery on you?
It is an outdated concept their father could be doing the best for them not being there the only thing he should be required to do is pay half of their basic survival.

In the end, the only thing a man can truly have is his family. In this I feel that I have been fortunate beyond measure as I see so much of my mother and father in Uncle Phil.
They did their best to make me a good person. I never rolled around with gangs. I never used drugs. I never stayed out late, or got drunk. Thanks to them I stayed out of trouble...mostly. But when I didn’t, they punished me accordingly and ALWAYS made it stick. But most of all, they were always there for me. Every time. Thanks mom and dad.

Uncle Phil was one of the greatest characters written, wise, strong and patient and loving . RIP James Avery.
I live in Glendale a few blocks away from the place where he passed away, and a few weeks before, I ran into him giving him a simple hello, and he reciprocated in kind. I didn't even know it was him until his passing a few weeks later. Right now, I wished i could've said to him, "You're the best father figure anyone could ask for." Thanks, Uncle Phil. For my childhood.

That whole "How come he don't want me" exchange still gives me chills. The fact that you can see James Avery breaking as Will is shouting is just heartbreaking. This was something that hit on a personal level, not just the characters.

Uncle phil showed what true family values mean beyond immediate Family. Something this generation really has lost unfortunately. Bring back more shows with great values and morals.
I wish this show would get the same amount of respect as Seinfeld and Friends. While those shows are great, Fresh Prince was special, because despite being a sitcom, it portrayed real issues.

I was fortunate enough to have a great father who would do anything for me. I think I speak for everyone who's in that same boat that James Avery played his role perfectly. Always providing and looking out for his family. When he needed to be real with his kids, he was. Wish they still had a show like this on TV.
This was the show that molded me into having the morals and values I have when it comes to discrimination. I dont tolerate it and I thank uncle Phil for teaching me that. If I could go back to childhood and rewatch the whole series like I did i would.

1:35 my partner and I were having a conversation the other day about me needing to accept help sometimes. It's hard for me to accept help because I spent so many years believing help was just a transaction. Since someone helped me that meant I owed them. We ended up talking for hours about true help is done out of kindness and wanting other people to succeed at whatever their goal is. And we ended up talking about this exact moment because Uncle Phil explained it so perfectly

The first one could become angry and violent and was there even one scene where the 2nd one had lines like that? The first one wouldnt put up with shit she didnt like while the 2nd one seemed nicer and could put up with shit she she didnt like more easily than the first one.
It is like to a much less degree comparing the character of Carlton with the character of C-Note and expecting them to behave the same way.
You would be really let down by that if you expected that.
