    This album is one banger after another. All killer, no filler! Even though I'm a Diamond Dave guy when it comes to VH, there's no denying that Sammy rocketed them into the stratosphere in a way that DLR never could've. For anyone who was around at the time, 5150 carries a lot of special memories. It was definitely *the* album of that summer. Thanks for the reaction, guys!

    • @paulrodriguez3795

      Love Sammy but “rocketed them into the stratosphere in a way that DLR never could’ve”???? What are you smoking?? Here’s the list of their top five selling albums…I think Diamond Dave would take exception to your naive statement!
      1. 1984 (‘84)
      2. Van Halen (‘78)
      3. 5150 (‘86)
      4. Van Halen II (‘79)
      5. Diver Down (‘82)

    • @jackiewilliams4854
      @jackiewilliams4854 Год назад +3

      5150 is certainly a good album BUT when you listen to Atomic Punk or MeanStreet just to name a couple of songs VH were already in the stratosphere. The Hagar era is just a different sound and imo doesn’t hold up to the DLR catalogue. Not even close.

    • @TripletDad3
      @TripletDad3 Год назад +3

      @Paul Rodriguez I know exactly what he's saying. VH never had a #1 album with DLR. Concerts sold out in days or hours.
      The albums with Sammy ALL rocketed to #1 or debuted a #1. Concerts sold out in minutes, and you better camp out at the ticket window at least the night beore if you wanted tickets.
      The DLR version made more rock classic songz, but the Sammy version made more songs that appealed to a much larger audience.

    Super stoked that you recognized the drumming of Alex Van Halen. Everyone knows Eddie but seems to forget Alex. One of the most under rated drummers of all time. Let us not leave out Michael Anthony on base either. His base riffs set an unnoticed tone to all Van Halen music. All around greats and justifies why they are a timeless favorite.

    This was the first single released from their 1986 album 5150, with Sammy Hagar as the lead singer. Eddie played a mix of synth and guitar on this song, and it's reflected throughout the album. Partial reason why it went to number one on the Billboard rock charts. The sound and energy changed, and it was good, for them and for us the listeners. Listen to Best of Both Worlds next y'all!

      You could already hear Eddie going in this direction on the 1984 album. Like you said Roth and the band kinda keep it to a minimum on that one though.
      I love the straight up hard rock sound of the first two albums. The groovy sound of Fair Warning. And I also like the more commercial sounds of the Hagar era. It's all good to me.

      I remember when this was released...I liked it well enough...I was looking forward to hearing Sammy front my favorite band...but it was not the same. It was not Panama. It was not Hot for Teacher...much less Unchained or Cradle will Rock or Aint Talkin Bout Love...or..take your pick. Sammy was/ is a better singer, but not as clever or appealing as DLR. I always felt 5150 ended one band and started another..."Im walking, dont need no ride, no explanation, just wasting time...is the type of lyric that drew me to VH as a youth..or "Nobody rules these streets at nights but me"...Sammy was good , but never captured the angst of DLR... But I do love Sammy...and he can still sing, DLR can not. ..peace Brother

    I love the fact that you guys enjoy so many songs from my era. I grew up in the '60s and worked as a "Car Hop," much like American Graffiti. Although that kind of romanticized it. Believe me, waiting on teenagers was horrible. No tips and each of them tried to act more obnoxious than the car next to them. I was one of the "poor" kids and had to work summers to buy school clothes. I helped my sister get a job at the Drive-In when she couldn't find a job. I guess, I was slightly obnoxious because I was trying to help her the first week. I had worked there two summers and felt I wanted to be helpful. She finally got fed up with my "help," and we argued. The cook turned us into the owner. I got a call from "Jeannie" the owner and asked to come over to meet with her. I thought, "Oh great, I helped get my sister get this job, and now I am going to be fired". I met with Jeannie, and she suggested that my sister and I not worked together. She asked me if I wanted to work in her Coffee Shop instead. Again, I immediately thought I was being punished unjustly. Now, I was not going to be with the other teenagers. "What a drag"!!! However, she offered me a little wage increase, and I reluctantly accepted. I showed up at the Coffee Shop the next day, and what a surprise. I waited on adults who had deeper pockets. Made what seemed like a fortune in tips and didn't have to put up with obnoxious teens. Never looked back.
    I have a song I thought you might be interested in playing. Do you know who Kathy Mattea is? She did a song called "Knee Deep in a River and Dying of Thirst." Very insightful song. I think your fans will love it. If you love the piano, you will love this song. I think is from the '80s but it was right when I started feeling nostalgic regarding the '60s. I believe this woman doesn't get the recognition she deserves.

    This song always gives me goosebumps, simply because it reminds me of the first time I heard it on the jukebox in a pub I regularly frequented, one Saturday afternoon in 1986. Weird how a memory can be cemented on one single occasion that's nothing special in particular, but it stuck with me for some reason because it, 'fitted', so well. Every time I've heard it since it takes me back to that occasion.

    If this doesn't bring back some banging memories of my graduation summer....boy did I cruise the streets on my 65 Mustang and blast this song with my best friend. I think we were the only girls in town who partied harder than the guys....LOL!!! I LOVED my rock and roll and one of the best features of my car was the Pioneer stereo system..with JVC speakers...front...back and in both doors. I played it with ALOT of bass and this was one of the best sounding songs with alot of bass. Van Halen was a BEAST!!! And EVH was the GOAT!!!

    In all fairness, y'all should do a reaction to Live Without a Net! It is the first tour that Sammy did with Van Halen. It's the concert that featured the Eruption solo everyone reacts to. You will be blown away by the energy and music in it. To see these songs performed live without any autotune and editing is unbelievable. If you only want songs from it, I suggest 5151, Best of Both Worlds, and Summer Nights. There are several more. Oh, and definitely check out Ain't Talking Bout Love on there.

    I was living in Fresno, CA when Van Halen were doing their For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge tour. I tried to get a ticket, but they sold out almost instantly. Faster than anyone else had sold out at that point, even Elvis. Apparently the guys were very appreciative, because they added a second show a day or two later.
    When the second show tickets went on sale, I went down to the record store (the Ticketmaster outlet) to buy one, and the line was around the building. No ticket for me, it seemed. To cheer myself up I went to the bookstore to buy a new book. As I was opening the door I looked down and there was a little Ticketmaster sticker next to the door. I go in, and it's quiet. Nobody there except the clerk. "Umm... do you sell concert tickets?" "Yes." "Do you have any Van Halen tickets?" "Yes." "...Can I buy one?" "Yes." Still bemused, I walked out with my shiny ticket.
    At the show, the band was awesome. But something unexpected... there were a lot of camera booms. Turns out they'd been filming and recording for a live DVD/CD. They said it was the end of the tour, and all that was left was Cabo, which wasn't a "work concert" for them, and they still hadn't quite got the footage they wanted. So the show I was at ended up being a large part of their live album.
    One of the best overall concert experiences of my life. The only bands I've seen that did better live shows were Blue Oyster Cult, Sabaton, and Nightwish.

    Love Walks In, live from New Haven CT in 1986, Eddie stayed on keyboards and Sammy played lead guitar. In my mind, this shows the evolution of Van Halen with Roth being a great rock band to Hagar and becoming a Supergroup. The band was unchained from the limits they had under the first six albums.

    Looking back, it was smart to get Hagar as the new frontman...Now they had 2 guitarists that could both shred, so Eddie could jump over on keyboards whenever he liked knowing Sammy would keep the riff chugging. So they were able to expand thier sound, and it was all good.

    Sammy had a long career way before he joined Van Halen. He's been rockin since the early 70's. The first band I remember hearing him in was Montrose. Then a great solo carrer then joined VH. Sammy's the Man! I've seen almost every tour of his since the 80's. I would have been to his earlier ones if I had been old enough to drive! Whenever he's in town(or close enough) I'm there! Those 2 songs go together like Foreplay always gets played with Long Time. We Will Rock You always comes before We Are the Champions. Heartbreaker always gets played with Livin' Lovin' Maid. Everyone who lived through the 70s and 80s knows this.

The guitarist Nuno wanted to play it for Eddie but he didn't think it was quite ready. By the time it was he passed away. Check the song out is called " Rise"

Eddie was incredible, Michael Anthony unreal voice and bass and Alex’s phenomenal drum playing!! Crazy good!

    I remember this song very fondly. Everyone thought Van Halen was done without David Lee Roth. But I had hope, since I was already a fan of the "Red Rocker" Sammy Hagar. Then one day, I heard the dj on the radio say they were about to play the debut of Van Halen's first single with Sammy as the lead singer. That opening thump-thump-thump felt like my heartbeat and when Eddie came in with that riff, I knew the band was going to be just fine. Roth was good, but I'm a huge Van Hagar fan.

    I remember the first time I listened to this after buying the brand new album on cassette. I don’t think I had heard any of the singles yet - maybe this one, if any - but I listened on my new Sony Walkman, and the first song on the album, “Good Enough,” is a blistering rock track that blew me away that first time! I cranked it up!!! And I ended up getting some really good mileage from that whole tape over the next few years. Just an awesome follow up to 1984 and a great introduction to Sammy and the new direction the band was taking!

    "Van Halen" is with David. When Sammy took the helm we called them "Van Hagar." Both versions of the band are awesome in their own ways. Sammy Hagar is still rocking, but poor Roth can't sing anymore judging by his live performance during their last tour with him (I saw it at Shoreline Amphitheater in the south S.F. bay area).
