i really like the discipline of japanese culture, and your right about how they like to keep to themselves. i was on a peace walk in the states with japanese buddhist monks and other young japanese youth and they were not use to me giving them hugs and embraces, it was a very american thing they said but in japan they do not do that.. one of the young japanese buddhist monks said he thinks its actually a very good trait.. haha Japan has a lot of amazing things i admire from them.. especially the manga/anime culture.. for me personally growing up with it.. here in the states.. when i was really down and out and suicidal growing up as a kid.. as silly as it sounds.. a anime/manga called One Piece, the creator/author/mangaka "Eiichiro Oda" his story he has created saved my life growing up suicidal.. it helped guided me during my youth.. it sort of became like a bible to me.. to help me keep going, and help me build a moral compass and a sense of compassion and also to help me understand everything happens for a reason.. and taught me to have a open mind to everything, to open my mind to the world around me.. to seek the truth in things.. to fight/live for freedom.. to inspire me to chase my dreams.. haha well that's just my 2 cents.. and can go, on and on, forever about one piece lol.. i am just amazed, how far the story/show has come.. because never thought it would become so popular now, because when i got into the story and show in the states, it was not loved at all in the states, more hated, for no apparent reason, from my experience growing up.. people made fun of me for it.. including my siblings.. now people are starting to love it. now more popular/mainstream people on social media are showing their love for the show, and now One Piece having it's very Successful Live Action show on Netflix, that is worked very closely with the creator himself ( and is very loved by many fans including myself) .. i'm just so happy and proud of how far One Piece has come.. and has never stopped getting better.. the creator is Truly a Genius.. in the end, i know now that not everyone that is a fan of something will take it as i did.. One Piece to me, showed me to always search for the meaning of things and messages of things, and do my best to apply life lessons / moral teachings / and good profound messages to my life .. and live it.. and lead it by example.. the best i can.. i'm not perfect.. i don't claim to be.. i am that i am.. i just feel movies and stories are fun too , but not only just fun.. it can be educational.. not just to watch things for entertainment.. hehe but i know.. in the end.. everyone is different.. everyone is on their own path.. on their own individual spiritual journeys.. and thats okay too haha peace my friend. peace be with you always. ❤🙏😇
Thank you for another great topic! Like you, I lived and worked in Japan for a few years. Your observations were spot on. But as you know, there's many other facets of Japanese culture and society that make it very unique. Korea is another country with it's own unique culture, very different from Japan. A point I would like to make is that for all the incredible modern advances made by places like Japan and Korea, I would much rather live in the Philippines. And it's not just because of Visa or financial issues either. As you mentioned, the stress level in countries like Japan is extremely high. And it's easy to become isolated and depressed, even if you're Japanese. In contrast, in the Philippines, you have the ease of day to day living because of the pervasive use of the English language, and the natural friendliness of the Filipino people, so it's much easier to do something like strike up a conversation! That's why there's also many Japanese and Koreans moving to the Philippines! Interestingly, many of these are women! They feel in the Philippines they can be much more free and independent outside of the rigid social constraints of their home countries.
Thanks for interesting well articulated video Stephen. Always been interested in Japan watching lots on RUclips. Great you had the experience, cheers Deborah 😊
"You never mentioned When" you worked / lived there .. I was Sta there, in the US Navy 85-87' and traveled all over .. Kyoto & Nara are amazing / historic .. I went back a few times as a Merchant Seaman 99' - 2005 .. I miss all the Customs / Formalities you learn .. "Very Strange" and Fascinating Country (culture / people) ..
Very interesting, yes I'd like to hear your experience of Korea afterwards too. It may not be perfect but the high safety of Japan is very appealing. I think vending machines have disappeared from Britain and we all know why.
I should take my Wife and baby boys to Japan solely for the lack of noise haha…. I live in Lapu Lapu and even being in a high end subdivision the noise is unreasonably excessive. I once asked my wife if she could move anywhere where would you go.. She said anywhere the hell out of the Philippines as she doesn’t care for the noise and other inconveniences . Myself I enjoy living here FAR more than in the west so that’s my scale of measurement. I wonder what the cost of living is presently. About 3k plus usd monthly is my income and I spend only two thirds of it living here. Thanks for sharing your interesting journey. Take care…
Having two babies we are home most of the time and i don’t drink alcohol so that alone saves a lot hahaha. We live a comfortable life on 2k. Money matters are always so subjective so what works for one won’t work for all. I know some expats here that live on less than, significantly less, and appear content.
As usual, love your content, but when are you going to get to the fishing/boating stuff? Not to compare you to the queen of Philippine vloggers, but the "P" recently did a trip with her father that went over really well. In reading the comments, I see that there were a lot of others interested in fishing as well (me included). As a Louisiana/Florida guy I NEED to know about fishing (its "in the blood") but info is hard to find. Hell, if I ever get there, I may start my own channel specifically on that topic. In the meantime though, I'd love to hear more about it, even if you can't show me a boat or water. What kind of fish are there? Are there regulations? Are there tackle shops? What does a boat cost? I have a billion questions.
Subscribed. Very interesting video. I've always been interested in Japan, but I have also heard it is a very closed society. A single guy like me won't automatically find some pretty Japanese girlfriend, I understand it's a very involved process. But the peaceful safe tidy and organized society is very appealing to me. I understand the introverted lifestyle as I used to be extremely introverted but I understood the need for change and so I reinvented myself. So I think I would be okay for a significant visit
Japan is very clean and safe and a beautiful country but don't expect to get much jnterest from the women, especially compared to the Philippines. The women can be very cold and timid in my opinion. Not all of them of course, but I find most won't show much interest or emotion. Think it's a cultural thing. Deffo go over and experience it but for an introvert I think Japan would be very difficult. Even an extrovert probably won't get much back.
Steven, I just want to ask you this. I am a Filipina, I just want to ask if I can work or do online teaching in one of the companies you were mentioning in your previous video.? Thank you.
So I've heard the exchange rate is very favorable to the dollar at 163 yen per USD. But I see hotel rates online that are very exorbitant. How much did it cost for you to live in Osaka per month approximately? Use whatever currency you like it's easy for me to convert.
Hello there, The apartment didn't cost me anything as the company paid this cost for me, But i believe at that time the rent was around $400 per month. My overall expensive with living cost was very cheap to be honest. All in was less that $80 per week
Im just throwing out a theory here, how many of those suicides are actually suicides? If its very common for people to take there own lives there, it would be perfect cover for a serial killer, and no death there would arouse suspician. Heck, he'd even be called ' The Hangman ', hmmmmm me thinks there's a book idea 🤔
I've read somewhere that some of the suicides in Japan before were just a cover for the murders committed by the Yakuza. The Yakuza would force a person they wanted to kill to commit suicide by threatening to kill their loved ones if they didn't commit suicide.
@@FLand-vw4hf I was on vacation with my Filipina wife and her Filipina friend for a week and this song kept being played on the radio and they loved it and sang to it for days I would laugh at them. Then I told them what it was about, and they laughed even more and sang their hearts out. lol
I have been told that Japan is a very expensive country to live in and one the most racist countries they believe in preserving their own race at all costs e.g. must live there for a period before obtaining employment speak Japanese to obtain citizenship and several other conditions is this correct? if not what is their policy on "foreigners" I would like to know thanks
I think it depends on where you are staying. In Osaka it was okay and i didn't feel any racism towards me. But i did sometimes feel i wasn't 100% welcome
What's wrong with wanting to preserve the indigenous peoples? Multiculturalism does not work, it creates ghettos and racial tensions. Western Europe is suffering from it's open door policy. In the UK , in most cities, the indigenous people have become a minority. We've already had riots due to racial tensions, and it will only get worse in the UK, as Muslims are trying to take over the country and introduce Islamic Sharia law.
It is expensive but I don't think they're racist. The population is something like 98% natives but I don't think that's a bad thing. The country is very safe and clean. What do you think would happen if they opened up the floodgates and let everyone in? Their beautiful, clean country would be ruined just like the UK, France, Germany etc.

It's definitely a lot quieter in Japan. The cost of living can be quite expensive there depending on the place you live in.
