I think what l love the most about Bob was that he was completely unfettered and totally unencumbered by a false and overblown sense of ego. If he saw a painting that he thought was even better than he could do (imagine that), he would freely and happily admit it, and was absolutely delighted by it. Not only did he not feel in the least bit threatened by it, he would sing the praises of whoever rendered it and actually encourage them to keep painting and getting even better and better. This is truly the measure of a big person, a generous heart, and a grand soul.
Sounds like the exact opposite of many art teachers I've had. An art professor I had in college would infamously never give out As. No student was ever capable of producing any art that what possible of an A. One time I earned a B+, only because he liked the quality of paper I used on a project and not because of any of the actual work that I did. So many art teachers an all levels turn their noses up at Bob in particular, criticizing his methods, saying things like, "all he does is teach people to copy him", etc. I feel like most art teachers can learn from him, in not being so harsh. More people should be encouraged to art as a creative outlet. The world would be a nicer, kinder, more beautiful place.
@@rare80 I think that too many art teachers have a very high opinion of themselves but are actually bitter because they never reached the level that they had hoped for. That can have a negative, everlasting, effect on those they are supposed to be teaching. I loved art when I was a kid and was excited to take my first art class in 7th grade. My art teacher was horrible, constantly criticizing all the girls in the class and constantly praising the boys. I can’t remember, exactly, all the mean things she said to me but it effected me enough that I never took another art class. Bob’s show started when I was in high school and I would watch him every Saturday. I spent my entire life(I’m 54 now) wishing I could oil paint but never daring to try it. After a LOT of pushing and encouragement from my husband, I started painting a few months ago. I’m actually pretty good! I learned from watching Bob’s videos. I love doing it and it brings me peace. I regret that I let one horrible teacher discourage me. I wish I’d had a teacher like Bob Ross. He’s never negative. He’s full of joy and encourages people to paint. He was a truly special man.
