First come, first serve! I have a high capacity D2 water basin, brown, that someone just gave me! Only one I’ve ever seen in my 34 years in rainbow! Talking about rainbows, my favorite model is the D3! Plenty powerful, smooth and quiet. Just don’t try to open it up for service/repairs. It’s a royal pain!
The chocolate brown D2's were sold in 1979 only. For a short time in 1980, the D2A was made (it was just the D2 but with the motor assembly from its eventual successor, the D3A), and was thus also chocolate brown. The D3A officially replaced the D2(A) in April 1980, carrying over the optional R-1024 power nozzle through September of that year.
The metal brush roll is the 1st-gen Vibra-Groomer, originally introduced in 1972 for the uprights and in 1977 for the canisters. The part # is 53409 for the 1st-gen and #534122 for the 2nd-gen Vibra-Groomer II. I recommend the VG1 on the fact that the higher-up Sanitaire uprights also used it.
The montgomery wards power nozzle has a metal brush roll under it. All the other ones are a dark brown with a red plastic or white plastic beater bar and then the black brush part
Great vid--I like your style and your collection--and, of course "Gunnar" was the star! Fyi, here's a list of Rainbow cleaners I pulled from vacuumland.org (posted by KirbyClassicIII):Canisters:D = 1955 to 1960; D1 = 1961 to 1973 ("D1" is an internal designator I prefer to distinguish the 1961 model D from the original 1955 version that was the first product of Rexair to bear the Rainbow marque); D2 = 1974 to 1979 (was first model to use a commonly-available power nozzle; in this case the PN, model R-1024, was made by Eureka); D2A = First half 1980; D3 = Second half 1980; to 1985 (was the first all-plastic model; also, in March 1981, Rexair replaces the Eureka-made R-1024 power nozzle with an in-house design, model R-1650) D4 = 1986 to 1990; Power Nozzles: Model R-1024 = 1974 to 1981 (models D2, D2A and D3A); Model R-1650 = 1981 to 1985 (models D3A, D3C); Model R-2800 = 1986 to 1990 (models D4A, D4C?); PN-2E (1998 to present)
@danno180 I wonder which of your Eureka-made R-1024 power nozzles has the Vibra-Groomer I metal brushroll underneath them? Especially, the 1979-80 period models with the striped decals?
DrF, you can get a replacement pan on eBay. I haven't tried seeing if the different year pans are interchangeable but they should be before the E series anyway
Definitely a nice collection, Rainbows are definitely one of my favorite machines as a collector. Sometime you definitely should find a 2 speed e Series, EXTREMELY powerful and smooth running vacuums. Did Casey end up getting the water pan latch on his D4 fixed?
I have two D2 Rainbows. The oldest one my mother bought new in '72, and I just used it today. The newer one I use downstairs. Will the new water pans fit the D2? Both vacs are sharing the same water pan, and I need a replacement pan.

He had a problem with a D3 latch that he switched out with my D3 as I bought a new set for my D3. He has been a big help to me with my Rainbow Vacs
