My mom had one of these from the time I was born (1973) until her death a couple of years ago. While she said she did buy the base canister from the in- home salesman, Rainbow had a tent every year at the county fair. That's where she separately bought the power head. The setup was identical to what you have here. She had the metal chrome dome, and the white woodgrain power head. The worst part of a Rainbow is constantly replacing the hoses. You'd yank on the hose to get the canister to follow you, and that would eventually rip the hose. Then, it'd have duct tape on it for a month or two, until she could get it to a shop and have the hose replaced. Since we had a cat, and I was a lot more allergic than I am today, the water bath was a great hypoallergenic option before that was even a word used much. Cool unit, and great price.

I especially love the D3 models, since my grandmother and aunt had D3c's when I was little. Too bad they were short lived since my uncle didn't know how to properly care for them.

Wow, watching this video is a real blast from the past. This was the very first model our family got back in the very late 77''. Vacuuming became so fun, exciting and cool because I was a kid in the 4th grade and our brand new vacuum looked like that robot in the most coolest space movie ever, at that time "Star Wars". We were using R2D2 to vacuum the house.

From 1955 to 1961 they had the Gold Dome model D, then from 1961 to 1974 the had the D2 that didn't have the PN. Late 1974 to April 1980 they had the D2A that used Eureka's PN's. They went to all plastic with the D3 to prevent rusting and corrosion. I have a D3C from 1982 in my collection. The D3 is also the first machine that introduced the Aquamate Carpet Washer.

      Correction:
1974-1975: D2 had the R1024 powerhead by Eureka, which had a two-wire receptacle.
      1975-1979: D2 changed the R1024 powerhead from a two-wire receptacle to a three-wire receptacle.
Early 1980: D2A, which combined the future D3's motor unit with the D2's body.
Summer 1980: D3A, which carried over the R1024 powerhead
      Fall 1980: R1024 powerhead replaced by Rexair's in-house R1650.

The first Rainbow I used was this model. It had a beater bar that had housing that matched the body. It was a friend’s that bought it new. It sold me on the Rexair Rainbow vacuums. I bought a 1985/1986 D3C that’s still with me and is fully operational. It only required one service when the plastic beater bar cracked. I’ve since bought one of the 2018 Rainbows after the carpet cleaner attachment for the D3C failed and was unrepairable. They clean so well and there’s no dirt ejected back into the air!

Thanks for the info, it taught us a few things about our model. We purchased a model like this from a friends yard sale for $50 in 1997, barely used. It came with the power nozzle (which is brown), and all attachments including the carpet cleaner and a small cleaning brush. It ran strong for about 4 years which we then had the motor replaced. Since then we had to replace the bowl (cracked by a penny, then latter a nail), trolley base (crashed into by one of the kids), and one of the hoses. All in all we spent $400 in repairs over the years. Money well spent IMO. Raising 2 boys it got a lot of heavy use! I don't use it for everyday cleaning now, mostly for deep cleaning and freshening the air when needed. I still love this vacuum cleaner and will not part with it.
I am curious however if the model name and it's shape was the inspiration for a certain Droid in Star Wars ;D.

I always wanted a Rainbow after it was first demonstrated to me in the 70's. I was a newlywed and we couldn't afford it. I ran across one (with most attachments) for $25 (at Habitat for Humanity) and could NOT believe my luck! I LOVE it and I hate vacuuming because I've never found a vacuum that seemed to do much of anything except frustrate me.
I have only one low pile rug but I wanted to get a power head to use on it. I've been struggling to use the low pile attachment with the wet hose to vacuum that rug.
Would I be smart to get a power head for my D2? I saw one on Ebay but it didn't include the white hose nor the connecting electric cord from the top of the power head metal sections to the body of the D2. What do you advise?

    • @graysonsvacsandmowers5426
      @graysonsvacsandmowers5426  Год назад

As long as you have the provision on the motor that allows for the powerhead hookup, then you should be good to go. Just be sure you use the R1024 style power head since that one has the proper connection for the D2.

I don't know, but if you can get what you need to run this vacuum you would be a fool to upgrade to kirby, or pig, or whatever newer gadget out there.. Even a newer rainbow is a downgrade.. this thing sucks (LITERALLY) all the crap out of your living space and carpeting and traps it in water.. no chemicals needed.. Society has come to rely too much on chems for clean.. This is the real reason younger people are so allergic to everything.. I am 50, we played in the dirt, we were allowed to grow into children before getting so many vax's.. WE played in and ate dirt and whatever was in said dirt as babies and toddlers.. lol

Will someone PLEASE tell me why in HELL you would want to go dragging a bucket of nasty mud and wet hair all over your house? Then have to disassemble the 100 lb beast and wrangle it to the sink or wherever to dump the mess out? Then have to clean out whatever you dumped into. Then fill it up AGAIN and reassemble it. Only to do it all over again!!!??? WTF!?
