    After dreaming about owning a car like this for many years I bought an RT this past summer. I looked at Mustangs and Camaros but the Challenger stood out. Excellent performance, handling & comfort. Absolutely a joy to drive. Extra HP when you need it, good cornering and good braking. Pretty good on gas if you take it easy.
    Once consideration was winter driving. Good winter tires on a 20" rim were expensive ($2K) but needed for a Canadian winter. Some people I spoke with thought I was nuts to drive it in the winter but it's winter-ready: good clearance, good weight ratios, paddle-shifting for down-gearing, traction control, ABS, heated seats & mirrors, block heater & remote start. Have driven it through a couple of snowstorms and weeks of below minus 10C without any problems. It's as good as any of the past vehicles I have owned but needed a little practice to get used to rear-wheel drive. See few Mustangs or Camaros on the road this winter.

    I was very surprised to hear that the Hyundai Genesis Coupe and the 370Z is considered competition for the Challenger R/T. He must be talking about the base model Challenger.

    • @danielc9635
      @danielc9635 8 лет назад +2

      +wildstar43 I think he's probably talking about the $30k-$40k price bracket. 370z starts at "technically" just under $30k, which is close enough to where Challenger R/T starts ($32,000ish) to say it's in the same price bracket.

    • @timmypstyle
      @timmypstyle 3 года назад +3

      A 370Z actually is close in performance. They have less power but are lighter. So they keep up with the muscle cars better than you would think.

      I bought a 2015 8spd challenger R/T back in 2017 and love it. It is just a weekend car so no rain or snow. I am 6'5" tall and with the seat all the way back a slight leaning of the seat back, I literally cannot fit the thickness of my hand in between the seats. There is literally maybe an inch of space. It is a very roomy car tho. The 8spd auto definitely makes the car enjoyable and their 23mpg highway number is way off as I get about 29mpgs at 65mpg and 26mpgs at 75mph. It is actually the most fuel efficient vehicle I've ever owned and I've had 14. Out of those 14, I had a 4 cylinder truck, 2 V6 trucks, 4 V8 trucks, 1 V6 van, 4 V6 cars and 2 V8 cars.

      How are you liking your Challenger RT? I ask because I just bought a 2017 yellow and black Dodge Challenger RT+P. I have driven nothing but American muscle/pony cars my entire life. I have always been a GM guy until very recently. I actually parked my 2012 SS Camaro for my new Challenger as it was time and it got absolutely abysmal gas mileage (18 mpg if I was lucky on the highway). In the two weeks I have owned my Challenger I have gotten the exhaust done, Demon Chip Tune, and a cold air intake. I did this because mainly 375 hp just wasn't enough. I can't believe how cheap it was to upgrade the car and the types of gains I'm getting for chump change is staggering. The gas mileage on these cars (as long as you keep your foot out of them) is the stuff of legends for a muscle car. I'm hitting 28-29 mpg easy.

    • @timmypstyle
      @timmypstyle 2 года назад

      @@Sinn0100 still love mine. Ive had my 15 since 2017 and have only put 12k miles on it. No mods yet except a resonator delete and racing stripes of my own design. I traded a 14 ram in for it and had a custom tune, ported and polished throttle body, vararam ram-air intake, and muffler delete. For a truck, it was a beast, but my challenger is quicker still.

    Those two "cons" aren't really things that would turn people away. it's a heavy muscle car with a v8. and it's a coupe like all muscle cars. poor to fair gas mileage, rear seat accessibility, and legroom should automatically be expected

    Great video, Dave. I actually bought this same exact car a few weeks ago. My 3 year old boy can't get enough of it and has watched this video probably 100 times. He even tries to imitate you and does a "pretend" version using his power wheels jeep. I started up my car the other day and he said, "dripping with power!" Seriously! He's a trip... Anyway, keep up the good work. I really like your approach to your videos. At the very least, it convinced me to buy the black-red RT 6 speed!

    I bought my white R/T with 6 speed manual in Nov '12 as a retirement present to myself. It is my "toy" and I have an '03 Trailblazer for mundane use. Living in the country, my R/T is going at least 25 miles roundtrip and sees very little stop & go, city driving. It averages 20-22 mpg overall and gets 33 mpg cruising at 55 mph, 28 mpg @ 65 mph and 27 mpg @ 70 mph. I don't thrash, trash, or abuse mine. I don't race anyone either. I did that in the old days and my R/T is a fun to drive car that doesn't carry any kind of insurance penalty, doesn't get tickets, etc. But, make no mistake about it. It's capable of getting you in all the trouble you want to get in, and more, if you insist!

    About the whole Challenger/Charger mistakes - I sell these for a living. One of my Challenger customers just bought a Charger AWD for his wife. Even he referred to his Challenger as a Charger. Easy mistake to make. BTW R/T top speed is 145-150 governed, SRT 180+ not governed. (in Germany, of course). Thanks for the video guys, you nailed it and great presentation from Samantha Rice!

    Compared to the Mustang, and Camaro, Interior room is probably the best between all. And it's the most accessible rear seat of the 3. And the R/T is rated at 25 highway with the automatic. Not sure what the manual is. But should be the same. My pap has a 09 R/T Classic and it's a very sharp, stylish, fast and powerful car. Love it!

    I just bought a '13 RT and your vid helped me make my decision to get it over the Camaro or Mustang. I have always been a Chevy guy so the Challenger had to do a lot for me to get it over the Camaro. Now the only thing I have to figure out is mine is Black like the one you tested but no hood to fender stripe. I bought the red stripe and a couple of my friends say to leave it as is and some say to put it on, So I keep looking at the one in this video and still haven't put the stripe on yet.

    You're the first person, even among the many camaro owners I've met and compared notes with at the car shows I attend to think the current camaro looks like a previous generation, but I guess it's all in the eye of the beholder.
    Insurance costs on the Vette are high, but they are on the ZL1 as well because of their classification by the insurance companies. My SRT8 actually costs less to ensure than my 4WD Suburban which had me laughing, but not complaining either.

    Only in Canada. In the U.S., you can get Chally RTs for 1-3k less than Mustangs and especially Camaros. And they don't "feel" slower because of the 400+ torque - it only matters if you race, in which case you're modding anyway.

    To Summer Summich: your wrote of, "Respect the true muscle cars of ye old'e" printed me to respond. 1st - Obviously, the manufacturers do or the Camaro and Challenger would still be on the shelf. I'm happy Chevy bright back the Camaro, but they missed the mark on design of the 1968 everyone dreams of owning. I can't keep up with Ford's changes on the Mustang. Their 2015 version is alien. The rebirth of the Challenger has the old true die hard Mopar people elated with the body design. We have some issues with handling, but we won't give up the retro look for something that does not scream Challenger from just seeing it. As far as respect for the old. Trust me. We not only respect the b old muscle cars, we'd all love to have one. A 1971 Challenger R/T with Mopar Track Pack went for almost $300,000 at Barrett Jackson in Scottsdale. Most are in the six figure range restored. We are attempting to find a 70' Duster or Demon to restore with our son. If he doesn't work on it, he doesn't get to drive it. Do, please don't ever think everyone doesn't respect the old cars that came before. Most of us just can't afford them. Try finding an old 'Cuda for under $70k. You'll need another $75k-$100k.

    I love it when people buy a performance based car, and they worry about fuel economy. It's got back seats, but they really aren't meant to be used unless you're yelling; "boss, it's d plane!" (Fantasy Island reference).
    The Challenger is what it is, a current version of the 60's "Pony Car". It looks great, but needs a few things like a serious gear in the rear end. My 2-cents.

    yeah if they were trying to charge 56k my guess is they had already done a bunch of "dealer addons" to the car. I have seen sticker prices for 2013 SRT8s hit 53k with every option under the kitchen sink. The base SRT8 price is a little over 44k. The base for the ZL1 is 56k, but that's understandable with the SC and upgrades components to handle it.

    Hands down, this is the best retro looking car to hit the streets. My car is 2010 Challenger with a V6. The car get's all kinds of praises for it's looks. Let's get real folks. This is the Mopar! Mopar rules!

    man...I've been thinking for the entire year which muscle car to buy at my 21st birthday on this December!!!!!!. I like the chevy camaro but the dodge challenger got my attention since came out in 2009. and now that I have good credit and a good job im getting the Challenger R/T PLUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;)

    No argument on that point, but some of the other guys were making inaccurate statements. Back in the day Ford was really under powered and Mopar never did build a decent trans. The Camaro needed a frame to stiffen it up. Lots of rear windows were popped out due to body flex. I've had several Fords and they are a real headache to work on. I've got a whole drawer in my Kennedy for tools that are Ford only. I've always been a GM man, even before I worked for them. (33 1/2 years)

    BTW the MDS doesn't come on the stick models, with auto trans the 5.7 V8 can push over 30 on the highway. Running 65 on the 2 lanes my buddies 300C gets 33 MPG. A local customer (pools) gets 26 MPG in town with an AWD 300C with 5.7. So there is no real reason for the v6 other than money

    I love the Challenger in every which way except for 1 thing. THe door notches are set for big parking lots so expect to be dinging other cars. The Mustang notches are made for smaller parking lots preventing you from dining them. This alone made me get the Mustang.

    @nismofury - Yes, the mpg's are pretty low but that's not why someone buys this vehicle :-) Sure is fun to drive none-the-less. Thank you for your feedback.

    I hate it when they do reviews on two door cars....Its a two door...Most two door cars are a pain to get into the back seat and a little less on rear leg room....

  • @Sky1
    @Sky1 11 лет назад

    They missed the biggest screw up with this car. With the back seat folded down you need to move the front seats up so much that it is nearly impossible to drive. This is because they did not make the rear seat headrests removable or pivot.

    good review. plenty of srt videos out there, so highlighting the r/t is appreciated. burn out was okay ... i figured you gave it enough gas to move out instead of just wanting to create a cloud of smoke... surprised by gas mileage = especially being the same as the srt8. that makes me think they should be able to do better with the smaller hemi in the r/t. camaros are nice, but more cartoonish looking. mustangs are nice, but everyone has one. the challenger has the attitude.

    Wow, people are really on your balls about you calling it a Charger. Personally I think this is a great review. Most reviews have too much background noise and sometimes you can't even hear the person speaking or even the car. This one has great audio and video. Also, It has convinced me to go with the R/T. Thanks for the vid!

    Mr. Erickson, I'm not sure how tall you are, but do you think that someone 6'6" could fit in this car? I don't have the convenience of test driving one for a year though since I'm overseas.

    Well at first I was thinking SS but then I immediately jumpped to ZL1. What do you want to compare SS to SRT8? or ZL1 to SRT8?
    I went to a Dodge Dealership in Fredricksburg last year where I got to test drive an SRT8. I remember taking a passing glance at the price where it read 56,xxx. I cant remember the last three numbers.

    I'm a big Chevy fan, but I'd take a challenger over a Camaro any day. Challenger has more seating space inside, better MPG, better suspension, better handling, and more horsies. :D

    Yes finally a modern muscle car, that looks like a muscle car. I was hell bent on getting a mustang, but I think I think I might change my mind. These modern "muscle" cars, look like sports cars. These looks like an actual muscle car.

    I think the next major refresh of the model will shrink it down some and address the weight issue. They are going to have to address it's fuel consumption to. Mustang is lighter, faster, just as powerful, and manages to avoid a gas tax entirely. Something not even Camaro can boast.

    Not sure how this was a negative review. He brought a Dodge "sales expert" to talk it up. The only negatives were the leg room and gas mileage. Which if you know cars any 2 door muscle car will pretty much be the same. Until now with the 2014 corvette getting 29mpg hwy. I am not a fan of dodge, but this is a nice car. Great review Dave.
