A Kafka trap is a fallacy where if someone denies being x it is taken as evidence that the person is x since someone who is x would deny being x. The name is derived from the novel The Trial by the Czech writer Franz Kafka.
Collecting millions of dollars from this apparently life-defining social issue, charging $35,000 an hour? Why isn't she donating all of the proceeds to the cause? She's perpetuating whiteness by being overly successful. I showed this to our Rabbi, and he said she already has enough money without the revenue from this. It's the whitest thing she could've done... 20 years ago we were reading Harry Potter. Now we're giving HR reps undue credibility just because no one wants to be called racist.

    • @leezaslofsky4438

So your objection to her perspective is that she (to the best of your knowledge) does not donate the proceeds of her lectures to "the cause"?
This is the kind of sleazy trick white racists love to use. Change the subject, attack the speaker personally, and deny that calling someone racist is ever accurate.

It's not a kafka trap. It's a phenomenon exclusive to whites. Minorities are not "kafka trapped". You're so trapped in whiteness you didn't consider that, therefore validating her point.

This has nothing to do with Kafka, despite your lamentable attempt to display some erudition by evoking his name.
She has written a book, based on her research and reflection, and on interactions with others who share her concerns. Her book may be a dud, or it may be useful, In any case, she is obliged by contract with the publisher to promote the book and its thesis. No doubt, after some substantial time working on it,she is grateful for the chance t discuss it in public.
What is so terrible about that? 20 years a go people in your age cohort may have read Harry Potter. But I can assure you that even way back then, there was a lot of discussion, writing, lecturing, etc about racism in America.
You may not remember those Old Days, but there was a Black guy who ran for President on the slogan (Yes We Can!). The rest of the slogan was implied rather than spoken out loud. It was "Elect a Black Man President".
Maybe your circle of friends paid no attention to that, and thought is was no big deal that America, after about 220 years, finally had a real opportunity to put a Black American in the White House. Or maybe they thought that once Obama was elected, the entire problem of racism in the US was now resolved, and there was no point in mentioning it any more.
If that is how you are thinking about this, then I have news for you: racism didn't just disappear when Obama got elected. There was an immediate, powerful backlash that led to the takeover of Congress by the T-Party fanatics (Obama: "I got shellacked"), and later to the vicious, openly racist white supremacy crusade of D. J. "Birther" Trump. This has now developed into the New Redemption movement aimed at "taking America back" and "Make America White Again" (though of course a token Negro like Ben Carson is welcome to sit, quiet as a mouse, at the table with the white folks).
Redemption: look it up. It was a sorry, disgraceful violent episode in American history which is now being reenacted by racist scum like DeSanctis and of course Trump, who are determined to shut down the whole discussion of racism except to make the spurious claim that it is the victims of racism who are the racists, not the beneficiaries of racism.
Your "ignorance" is not convincing, any more than DeSanctis is believable when he worries about the "hurt feelings" of white children who are told that racism is a problem in America, and that they, as whites, join a long procession of generations of white people who have benefited from the oppression of their fellow Americans who are Black, not because they choose to do so, but because American society is structured that way..

Like, a 4 Point Plan to Get Rid of Racism in Just a Few Years?
Racism can only be overcome confronting it, facing up to its various effects on people's lives, and taking action to remedy those effects in a spirit of partnership.
IN refusing to confront it and explore its effects in our society and on individuals in our society, we uphold and strengthen racism. By denying its nature as a social structure, we strengthen it. By pretending that racism is just a left wing hobbyhorse and that everything is just fine in America, we uphold and empower racism.
That's what you and many other commenters here are doing: angrily refusing to face the reality of American racism, to understand its real nature, and to do something other than be polite to the next Black person you meet.
It makes you angry to be told that you live in a racist society, and that anger is the strongest barrier to changing over to a non-racist society.

"I'm always polite to Negroes, so how can I be a racist?" "Racists are bad people who say nasty things to Negroes, and even do bad things to them. I'm so glad I'm not like that!"
American society is racist, as its results have shown for the past few centuries. But many white Americans are pleasant to Blacks they encounter. Both of these facts can be true at the same time.

“…a positive white identity is an impossible goal. White identity is inherently racist; white people do not exist outside the system of white supremacy.” From White Fragility: Why It’s So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism, by Robin DiAngelo, p. 149.

    • @leezaslofsky4438
      @leezaslofsky4438 2 года назад +8

"Whiteness" is only important in relation to other "colours". Once you are considered "white", you acquire privilege in American society.
Whiteness can be awarded to some people who were previously considered non-white.
Italian immigrants to the US were not considered "white", but "olive skinned" "Latins".
Jewish immigrants were originally considered non-white. Instead, they were "oriental", "Semites", deeply marked by their origins in the deserts of the Middle East, etc.
This taxonomy was in force until WWII made it necessary for the armed forces to draft men from more diverse backgrounds than previously. The military had to reform its habits to make the new recruits comfortable by treating them as whites.
Of course this was not carried so far as to treat Black Americans as "white". They were segregated and given menial assignments (in most cases), as it was thought -- probably rightly -- that white personnel would resist treating blacks as equals, or, if blacks won promotion, obeying them.
Truman integrated the armed forces several years after the war. This sparked a major revolt by the Southern Democrats, who formed their own party and ran Strom Thurmond, a racist senator, against Truman in 1948 (the "Dixiecrats" carried 4 states in the Deep South and 40 electoral votes).
Currently, "white" includes all people of European ancestry, including Italians, Jews, Eastern Europeans (formerly "Polacks" and "Hunkies").
"White" does not include Latinos, though this is in a process of change, in which "white Latinos" are considered "white" if they are culturally Americanized, but not if they still maintain their original culture. The "whitest" are accepted first, and then, over time, like the Italians and Jews, the whole group is accepted as "white".
This process of "whitening" people originally considered non-white does NOT apply to Blacks, unless they "pass" as white due to their light skin and "white" features. (Lena Horne, the singer, was told she would have a more successful career if she "passed", but she refused).
This the "escalator" effect that, over generations, turns non-white immigrants' descendants into "whites" does NOT apply to Black Americans, They are permanently barred from whiteness, which means they are permanently consigned to the bottom of the racial hierarchy in America.
The fact that many black Americans have achieved success in many areas of American life has NOT led to their being considered "white". If they are successful it is as blacks, and their success is used to justify white supremacy because it is not 100% exclusive, but allows for some blacks to succeed.
Due to the long tradition of oppressing blacks, many white Americans define their "whiteness" as, first and foremost, being non black. The common understanding is that anyone with "a touch of the tarbrush" -- any black ancestry -- is black, not white, even if their ancestry is mostly white.
The existence of millions of Americans whose ancestry includes white people -- such as the descendants of white slave owners who raped black women -- a common practice -- and whose skin colour is not very "black" -- are considered black in America.
The categories used in some countries, in which people were defined by the number of their black or white ancestors -- mulattos, quadroons, octoroons, griffes, sacatras, etc --was not much used in America. A person is "black" if she has any black ancestors.
Alexandre Dumas, author of The Three Musketeers and other works, was one quarter black, born in what is now Haiti, he was a "quadroon". In America he would have been considered black, his status either slave or freedman.
The great Russian poet Pushkin was one eighth black (an octoroon). The African American registry website calls him a "Black Russian". That is how he would have been viewed in America. In Russia he was proud of his African heritage, but was considered white.
This "whiteness" is a fluctuating thing, in some periods more restricted, in others more widely distributed; in some places narrowly defined, in others broadly defined. It is possible to become white after having been non-white; it is possible to be defined as black after having been considered white (as with the African American Registry's view of Pushkin).
In America, the boundaries of whiteness tend to expand over time, but NOT to include blacks, who are forever non white. Since white people are privileged in America, occupying the highest rung on the racial ladder, expanding whiteness has been one of the ways in which "democracy" has expanded over time.
The absolute refusal to expand "whiteness" to include black Americans is the foundation of America's racial hierarchy, just as slavery was the foundation of Southern society.
After the abolition of slavery, Southerners found ways of maintaining white supremacy without reestablishing slavery as a legal status.
After the abolition of Jim Crow legislation, Americans found ways of maintaining white supremacy without using legal segregation and Black Codes.
America "modernized" white supremacy, using more "modern" ways to justify it (including denying it), and inventing policies and practices to uphold it while using seemingly unrelated reasons to justify it.
Thus, America has created a system of mass incarceration that is larger than those of the next 10 countries combined, and has filled it disproportionately with black Americans, largely by using drug laws that have had little effect on widespread drug use in America, but have made it possible to incarcerate millions of black people, disenfranchise them as "felons" (in some states), and supervise them using the parole system.
Thus it is that while America's population is 13% black; 34% of its prisoners are black, and many more blacks are under parole supervision, and millions are denied the right to vote.
This "modernized" white supremacy is visible in almost every area of American life, from the economy, education, housing, culture, health, life expectancy, and the rest.
Unlike slavery or Jim Crow, "modern" white supremacy is largely upheld by pretending it doesn't exist. The slave owners used to spread propaganda about the good conditions provided to slaves; white leaders in the South used t praise the "Southern way of life" in which the races had come to a friendly understanding that "each race had its place" and accepted that arrangement willingly.
Denial of white supremacy is today's version of those myths. That denial is upheld by the "discomfort" expressed by whites who refuse to discuss white supremacy; who are outraged when it is suggested that white supremacy exists, when white privilege is mentioned, when black people demonstrate or criticize white supremacy, etc.
The modern version of white supremacy is still based on violence, on discrimination, on repression, on sabotage of black economic and other opportunities, and health care arrangements that sabotage the health and life expectancy of black Americans.
In other words, while often less crude than the old Jim Crow, with its lynchings, whippings, etc, modern white supremacy is just as lethal, just as hypocritical, just as unfair and undemocratic as Jim Crow was.

Maybe we don’t want to talk about racism because we know that we’re always gonna be the subject and aren’t allowed to bring any contradicting opinions to defend ourselves. Basically, we are forced to accept being vilified for nothing that we’ve done as individuals and are forced to endlessly strive for an unreachable moral goal. I mean, there’s really no motivation to NOT be racist. In fact, there’s more motivation TO be racist simply because we’re being the subject of it, in spite of how members other communities of color are being racist against each other.

How come Cornell West isn’t offensive like Robin DiAngelo? And Cornell is Black. Robin is full of someone who I don’t understand as am I wondering is she is meaning to be full of animosity towards White people? Because my family has French ancestry. I have the same ancestry as Ted Bundy and someone said don’t be like him. It’s childish. I felt upset and after he said that, I said he was a racist. But relieved to know, I recently been told that I look like an Ashkenazi Jew. Cause I am 49% Ashkenazi Jew. But feel like I look a little like Ted Bundy. And I called the man a racist. And to call a French descent person Ted Bundy, you are asking for it. And someone called me verbally abusive. So since Robin used the word racist a lot, she is verbally abusive a lot. And we had the Holocaust. I believe that the man who said Ted Bundy. I don’t know what he is and I don’t care. Because I am not racist. In a way, I look beautiful. Childish. Maybe I should have said childish instead. And Robin DiAngelo is verbally abusive. And she thinks she is so right. And my family is colorful with white, black, and Japanese. That my sister adopted a biracial baby. And my cousin married a Japanese lady. And the word racist doesn’t seem to fit. That I was living in an apartment complex with the majority Latino. But I moved out because I didn’t like the infestation and the water being turned off. And it would be nice if they lived where I do now. I am not an exception. But this woman, I descended from a biracial marriage. There was depression in my family. We have a great work ethic. My grandfather hired lots of black people because his produce market was in Washington D.C. This Robin is rambling. Anyone can accuse white people as racists. We all know about slavery. Robin is Catholic and I was raised Jewish. So there you have it. And it’s possible that my great great great grandmother was a slave. So Robin frustrates me because she is full of assumptions. That my hair is blonde, but it has nothing to do with my identity. I recently saw a photograph of my cousin, John Illgen. He was dark. Of course he was. He has a Native American great great grandmother. And I don’t believe Robin DiAngelo understands that some of us white people are mixed. But since I have light hair, people keep on reminding me about that. It’s weird. I have filled out an anti racist book. It wasn’t offensive. It means you aren’t racist. Just be anti racist. I am like my jaw is dropping when Robin DiAngelo said Native American. My great grandfather was Catholic. My dad was a dark white person. Olive complected. And did great. Successful, smart, but he made me angry. My mom, part Native American. DNA showed Native American DNA in my family. But we think like white people and some of us are republicans and voted for Donald Trump. I don’t think Donald Trump is racist. I called two people a racist because they were abusive first. If you call me a racist, I will call you a racist.

Racism is "systemic" because EVERYONE is racist. Everyone carries the primitive tribal drive inside. But unlike DiAngelo, I believe the way to route around this primitive instinct IS in fact the concept of individualism. The very concept that she preaches against as "oppressive". Collectivism only encourages the primitive tribal drive and only individualism and policies to ensure individualism and equality of opportunity have any effect at all on the original sin of being born a flawed human with tribal drive.

I submit to you that you don't know what you're talking about. What evidence do you have that ALL humans are racist?
Maybe you are a primitive tribal person but most people are not. White racism, which is the variety that is the problem in the US, arose from slavery. Before the Slave Trade took off in the 17th century, people didn't pay much attention to "race". The concern was far more focused on religion -- Catholic or Protestant? Jewish or Christian? Muslim or Christian?
individualism is nice, but unfortunately we humans are "social animals", as Aristotle said, and we can only survive by mutual support. Yes, there are examples of men who have made lots of money by being "rugged individualists', but they depend on the rest of us to admire that (usually fake) quality and to pay them the money they need to live their oh so individual lifestyles.
Individualism has been a complete flop when it comes to dealing with social problems: at most it is used as an escape hatch for "individualists' who can't be bothered to worry about their fellow humans.
If you think that simply deciding to define everybody as an individual, paying no attention to his or her social connections, will solve racism, you are a damn fool.

The problem with white fragility is that it says that the entire society is racist. And that every single aspect of society that creates unequal outcomes must be racist. And then it categorizes white people in a certain way which basically implies that those characteristics aren’t in any other group. It’s essentially racism packed in an anti-racism package. If it was just about exploring all of our biases and assumptions and stereotypes I would be all for it. But it asks you to accept her worldview with no evidence that it’s so, in order to be a true alley. It’s cult like thinking. Then it has this brilliant cohesive maneuver where if you reject what she is sayin then that is only because your supporting the patriarchy. Someone questioning her is proof of the racist society. So it’s set up just like a religion where you have to believe it all or your against it. And it’s unfalsifiable.
Racism exists. But outside of changing laws what can you do about someone’s thoughts?
I would say is there a system in place that effects black people negatively.the drug war is a huge part of it . But also welfare incentives single motherhood and Father absence. How bout charter schools and school choice instead of the failed public school system? There have been laws in place that hurt. But so long as we don’t see how the democrats and republicans both have done things that together create the problem, then we don’t solve the problems curatively and then robin dangelo and the socialist end up tarring society down because no one fixed the problems curatively and just let them fester for years...

@@DarkAngel2512 American history is dominated by the race issue. Race is decisive in almost every area of American life, from the economy and jobs, to health, to the military, to politics and everything else.
You try not to look at that, you try to find excuses to deny it, you pretend it's all in the past", etc. By doing so you prove her point: White Americans benefit by a racial pecking order in which they almost always come out of top-- without even noticing.
Yes, there are some white people who do their best to fight racism -- di Angelo is one of them. and there are millions of others. But somehow, white supremacy still exists and is decisive in almost every area of American life.
      You want some stats?
The average white family has 10 times the wealth of the average black family.
The black population is about 13% of the total.
The US Senate has 3 black members (3%). This is the highest proportion in US history.
Of Fortune 500 CEOs, over 90% are white men. The other 10% are shared by women and non-whites.
Unemployment among blacks is ALWAYS much higher than among whites.
American prisons hold more inmates than the next ten countries COMBINED. Of these, 32% are black; 29% are white, the rest are Latino and others. Blacks are 13% of the US population. Whites are 61.6%. Others are 25%.
How is it that black Americans are so woefully under represented among the rich and powerful, and so over represented among the poor and the imprisoned?
Racists will tell you that just shows how black Americans are dumb, lazy and prone to crime. And white people are smart, hard working and law abiding. In other words, America is a just society where everybody gets what they deserve.
More honest observers -- like di Angelo -- will tell you that these (and many other) statistics are those of a racist society in which people's lives are decided largely by what race they belong to, independently of their abilities and work.
Racists know or sense this, and they rely on their white privilege to give them a boost in all areas of life. Many feel that they need white privilege just to keep going. They are determined to hold on to that privilege, and if that means overthrowing democracy, civil war, and police brutality, so be it.
Many white people regard this as contrary to American ideals. BUT they cannot help benefiting from white privilege, which is ingrained in every aspect of American life. So they, as whites, have an average of 10 times the wealth of blacks. They, as whites, have a better shot at economic success, a lower risk of going to jail, better health, better housing, more political clout, and longer lives than black Americans.
In order get rid of racism, whites must face up to this gross inequality, based on race privilege. That is what di Angelo is saying.
And she is pointing out that one of the main barriers to overcoming racism is the refusal of white people -- the ones who have the power in America -- even to talk about this.
They use all kinds of excuses, change the subject when the topic arises, find minor things to dispute, and dismiss the whole subject when they find them.
That is what you have done. Instead of looking at the substance of her lecture, you manage to find a "mistake" (not all whites are equally racist) and then dismiss everything else she says as "pseudo science", i.e. bullshit.
That is one way of displaying "white fragility". It is just as effective as when a racist says "that's all bullshit", or another racist says "you're a communist". These are all ways of saying "I don't feel comfortable talking about racism in America."
And that is the most effective way to uphold white privilege and racism: just shut up about it, raise trivial issues, deny, deny, deny.

@@DarkAngel2512 In America, racism shapes society in ways that are much more deeply rooted than in the UK.
Jamaicans and Africans are different national or regional groups, not "ethnic" groups.
The key difference is the role of slavery in American history. In the UK, it was an institution in some colonies, not in the British Isles. It took a lot of hard work for people like Wilberforce to get slavery abolished in the Empire, but in the US it took a Civil War in which over 600,000 people died.
In Britain there was discrimination against non-whites, and in the colonies there was a caste system with whites at the top of the racial hierarchy. But this involved only a small fraction of the British people.
In America slavery was the foundation of the Southern economy and had a big influence on the Northern economy too. Most Southerners based their identity, their political views, their economic activity, and many other aspects of their lives on their place in the racial hierarchy.
The Civil War put an official end to slavery, but Southern whites, with Northern support, soon forced Blacks into a position not very different from slavery, which, under the name "Jim Crow" lasted until the 1960s officially, and still exists today, "modernized" but very real.
Your "argument", besides being irrelevant to the American experience, is just another way of trying to change the subject so we're not discussing racism any more, but some material about the UK.
That is exactly the kind of maneuver di Angelo is talking about when she refers to 'white fragility". Deny, quibble, change the subject, avoid discussing racism in America and thereby perpetuate racism in America.
