I saw a video of him improvising on piano a combination of Kansas tunes, and it was really cool how he put it all together in a very spontaneous way. He really put a fresh perspective on those tunes, putting some of his own ideas into them. That's a sign of a great composer, and new Kansas music is about great writing, not just playing.

I admire Tom as both a player and a human being, I learned about him (like many) when he toured with Yes and have followed him ever since. Very down to earth, around my age, a fellow keyboard player, just someone to look up to. Fabulous musician, he has some solo material out there that's great.

    Hi John,
One of my all time bands. Love progressive rock and Kansas is one of the supreme bands excelling in that genre. I have all of their albums. I enjoyed the Prelude Implicit and from all
accounts the Absence of Presence is in the same vein. I ordered Absence and counting the days. The music, the title and artwork are so fitting for 2020.
Is this Kansas, absolutely. No doubt in my mind. With the multi layered music and many band members helping in the production and composing and Ronnie's voice is so good and are performing songs that were not able to with some founding members. A band that evolves and maintains the legacy and carries the flag..... is evolving and thriving.
A band that only plays their old hits.... could be a tribute band in and out of itself... in some cases.
God bless and thanks for honoring this great band and album,
    Tino

Deep Purple's latest album "Whoosh" has three members (at least from the mark 2 lineup). I agree if the members are comfortable with their own direction, the only thing in my opinion that is a must for Kansas to maintain is that they were always known for their stellar musicianship.

I know he is a very talented keyboardist. There is no doubt about that. But there is something very special about the first 4-7 albums Kansas put out.. The feel... Because they had all spent years IN Kansas.. the state... there was the feel of desperation.. of being in the middle of nowhere... He needs to live in Dodge City or Great Bend... live there for a couple of years... experience the great plains.. You get to know what the People of the Southwind is all about...

I am a BIG Kansas fan. I have seen them numerous times (only to be exceeded by the times I have seen Rush), so more than a dozen times for certain. And, living here in Atlanta, have met Steve Walsh numerous times. One memorable Kansas concert was on March 30th, 1981 in Ann Arbor, MI. The same day Reagan was shot. This was their Monolith tour. Steve Walsh was electric on that tour. However...
Here is what I did. I listened to the new album to see how they sounded. I will be totally frank here, it took 3-4 times for me to adjust to Tom Brislin's voice. After my 4th listen of the album in its entirety, I said to myself, "Tom is really good". I liked his take on the classic Kansas songs and he has the vocal chops to hit a certain octave range on many songs, as well as singing great harmonies.
The new album motivated me to purchase tickets for the March 20, 2022 show in Athens, GA. I am looking forward to seeing this lineup!

Saw Kansas last year. They played all of Point of No Return. Amazing show. Is it about the music or the individual playing it? We all love our favorite band members, and there are some philosophical arguments to suggest no, it isn't Kansas, but they are keeping the music alive--and that's what's important!

Still on the fence hearing him sings the classics. But having said that. I sat down and listened to "The Prelude Implicit" when it came out. Their first album with Ronnie. It's a damn good album!! Has all the elements that made Kansas famous. Shame radio is so stagnant now. That it didn't get airplay. Because it deserves a chance. I didn't know about this new album and will listen to it now!

This nonsense cracks me up. Does anyone complain that the London Philharmonic doesn’t have the same players as it did 40 years ago? It’s Kansas. I get the argument about who the composers are, but if they are putting out quality music in the same vein (and I believe they are), then it’s Kansas. I agree with Phil Ehart - I’d like to see the band continue on with its vision after all of the original members have retired, the music deserves to live on, and I hope they continue releasing new music.

Close, but no cigar. This is a great album but doesn't really capture the Kansas feel. The violin is featured more than any Kansas album. There was always a unique blend and subtle quality with Robbie's playing. You just can't replace the songwriting of Kerry Livgren. Such a uniquely recognizable sound and melody. Unfair to compare this version of Kansas to the original. It's like comparing the new touring version of the Temptations to the original. Those vocal tones and harmonies can't be duplicated. But this is still a great album.

It's kind of like a tribute band to me. The same as I feel about the current iteration of Yes. They sound like Kansas but it's not the people that made us like the original material. It's musicians mimicking the idiosyncrasies of previous members. I much rather them forget about all that. Become a different band alltogether and do their own thing. Be themselves and create something new without having to sound like Kansas. However, being called Kansas gives them a established fanbase without starting from ground zero.

The band is fine, but through the years of evolution, I can't find anything similar to the original 6 members of the 70s. I saw the band and they are impressive, but there was something much more organic with the original band. The technology (to me) has ruined the overall sound of the band (on record) to a point of compressed to death sound. It is VERY difficult to enjoy the songs because the records and CDs NOW do not breath. (This is the same thing that has happened to YES). For the first time I bought the first album in 1974, I had to pass on the new live release. The newest studio album is much too distracting with the compression to enjoy. Would be wonderful to see this band record their next studio album like they did in the beginning. Analog and earthy.. Much too slick now. NOT KANSAS.... (and of course, no one could write material for KANSAS like Livgren, and no one can bring the vocals like Robby and and Steve. Kerry hasn't had a band or team that have accomplished what he did with the 6 members at the beginning, and Steve is retired, and Robby has passed on. It's just not the same)
