I remember being pumped to play it when it released. Paid $60 just to play for a half hour and then go back to Sims 3. Didn’t go back to the Sims 4 until the toddler update in 2017!
same thing for me and all I did was make Sims in the Sims 4 because that's all it had on Sims 3 if even that at all because the lack of swatches was severe...

I WAS SO DISSAPOINTED because when sims 3 came out in 2009 and I got it very quick after release and it just did not compare. It has come a long ways since 2014!
If I remember correctly there was a limited object placement on other object (ex a flower on the table) and they added more later on because ppl complained about not fitting a lot of clutter or something
yeah I'm pretty sure those slots on the bar came with the as recent of an update as placing things on the toilet (and all those other new slots on things) but maybe there was slots but surely not that many as in this video

reusing the same rugs throughout a small-medium sized build is such a pet peeve for me now that i have so many packs, but seriously back then you had such limited options that it was a necessary sacrifice. i cant imagine going back simsie is stronger than me lol
A lot of older suburban homes had a ton of hallways. Open concept was a later thing. Honestly, there's so many rl houses that have stuff we would hate to do in the sims, lol.
i REALLY want a sims house that’s like the house I grew up in in the 90s. it was built in the 1920s and i have so much nostalgia for the cozy hallways and rooms lol. open concept has me agoraphobic these days
I wasn't playing at launch cuz the Mac launch took them like a year 😂😭 it's a shame knowing how rushed this game's development was but it's very impressive what the team has been able to add on to their existing base code over the years, especially considering TS4 was originally supposed to be an online multiplayer game
I don't know how Kayla remembers what came out in the original base game and what was added even a little bit later 😵💫 I guess it's just from building using the same small amount of items over and over again!
Also to be fair, this game is legit her job. She knows it more than the average person would be expected to because she’s legitimately a professional at the sims 4 lol
I remember the update that allowed us to stack windows and I remember watching simsie’s video covering it. I didn’t even realize I had been subscribed/played that long
I’ll never forget when I tried to play The Sims 4 the first time around 2015 and was mortified by how lacking it felt. No toddlers, no pools, and build mode scared me. I think I tried to play for around a week before I gave up and went back to playing The Sims 2 until around 2020 when I finally gave The Sims 4 another chance 😂
there are definitely some nice QOL and CAS/gender/sexuality features that Sims 2 doesn’t have that i would really miss, but it truly had so much heart. the game was designed so thoughtfully, so much time and effort went into the details to make it feel alive. it truly felt like a labor of love
I first got TS3 a few months before TS4 released. I considered waiting and getting TS4 upon release instead. This makes me so, so glad I didn’t. I got ~6 good years with TS3 and by the time I got TS4 it had so much more content.

the way i had the game since 2014 but didnt start playing until seasons was released and even then i only played for like an hour every once in a while .. i was still heavily playing sims 3 until at least 2020 when i finally started to trickle over into the sims 4.. mind you ive continuesly watched simmers play it religiously throughout the years especially cause my sims tubers all stopped playing sims 3 all together (like james formerly known as the sims supply) so i have always been up to date with the game but just didn't care for it for myself.. it lacked
So crazy I decided to randomly watch James Turner’s video this afternoon about playing sims 4 from 2014 which he posted 5 years ago. It’s been in my watch list for years. What a coincidence you’d post this the day I decide to watch that
Lots and lots of swatches were added, and textures, items, many windows and doors, careers, terrain manipulation, pillared foundations, the best lights, hidden objects, event stuff, live edit objects, and a lot more. I bought the game soon after it came out, but didn’t play till some time after they added pools.
i remember being so excited back in 2014, getting the game literally the day it came out. opening the game. the immense disappointment. and then i went back to ts3 and didnt touch ts4 again until 2017 LMAO. and i only went to ts4 bc ts3 stopped working for me. luckily, ts4 has grown on me
We got Sims 4 when it first came out, played it an hour then then didn't touch it for 8 years it was so bad. The really annoying part was we had all the sims 3 packs but the computer died and when we tried to reinstall on the new one the app had "lost" most of the packs we owned and we needed to rebuy them. That was one of the last games I've bought when it first comes out. I just assume any new releases are broke on launch and wait and see if they bother to fix it, then buy once it works better.
Sometimes you can download previous builds of games without it forcing updates! It would be really interesting to try downloading an earlier game build
i'm so nostalgic for this! i remember having so much fun as a kid playing this way in 2015 - somehow. though i also had city living and get together(best sims 4 worlds imo!). it's crazy to compare the old, blocky 2014 furniture to what we got recently...
My build mode brain is honestly still trained to the doors and windows being locked. I'll build a 5 tile wide house thinking "oh I can fit three windows here!" even tho I can center any number of windows now 😂
To be fair when it released, i was just amazed by the graphics and how it looks so much better than the previous sims. I’m a sucker for good graphics so i was seated for some basic gameplay lmao
The fact that lilsimsie can do starter home under 5K these days and her "base game build" 2014 edition is 86K is actually the wildest thing from this video to me XD
I remember even when I think it was Eco lifestyle? came out, when we could alt place and half tile place doors and windows, and place widows above each other. It felt revolutionary.
I've been playing the Sims 4 since I think its release year, but I bought the CD after the ghost and pool patch were already out, I think. It's seen a lot of improvement over the years but tbh I miss some things, especially the old font and pack covers, the old menu and some features from the old UI that were less cluttered and chaotic than now.
I started playing in June of 22', I had friends who had been playing for much longer, and this deff vid puts everything in perspective haha, love how far the game has come since release! good job on the build Kayla!
Got the sims for my 10th birthday back in 2016 and haven't really gone a week without playing and it's so easy to forget how lacking the game used to be and how exited I was at every update

P.S. I’m pretty sure the rug at 18:58 wasn’t in the game in 2024, or at least not that swatch
To me, playing the sims 3 in lauch was the most crazy experience, than for sims 4. because the world was now open, we had bikes, we could travel with the sim, it felt so much more real, I was in love with sims 3
I remember my sister bought it in 2014 and she let me try it out, safe to say that I didn't start playing until there was at least the toddler update... Because before that was just uncomfortable to play
Omg the pic for this Video! 😱 The colourless world i remember this, and the worlds were so empty! The garden in willow creek with a food stand wasnt there. It was nothingness! 🙈
Man, it's wild to see how far The Sims has come! 🤯 I think playing it like it's 2014 really shows just how creative we all had to be back then. Can't believe we survived with so few options! 😂✨ Maybe we should all try to recreate our first-ever Sims builds for fun? 🏡💖
This reminds me of when I first played this game! I used to be so amazed at the carpets and the fact that you could layer them! All of my houses had so many carpets lmao
LILSIMSIE!! I am a huge fan! You are so creative and kind, keep doing those fundraisers!! I recently hurt my knee really bad, and I couldn't do anything for a long time but your videos kept my spirit up! Thank you so much!!❤ Your cats are sooo cute! I have a build challenge idea for you! You have to build a house that looks as similar to the rooms catalog as you can, it is your choice if you want to do a limited packs, or base game build as well as no pack limits!! I REALLY hope you do this build challenge, I have been wanting to tell you this for sooo long!!! Bye!!
I still furnish like this for like 95% of the build, and then scoot things ever so slightly into place at the end. It's because toddlers will come up to you and trap you in a corner while they chat, until you die. I need to have plenty of exit strategies.
I refused to buy the Sims 4 until there were toddlers, pools, and ghosts, and even then I waited about a year after those came out before buying it on sale for $5
As much as im glad we have the customization we have now, part of me is so nostalgic for this weirdly spaced build style! It has the same vibes as the early sims games. Huge rooms with spaced out furniture so the sims dont glitch. I like it
Do you have any builds saved from 2014? Because it would be so cool to see a makeover of a really old house with everything the game is capable of now.
I still do some of this stuff despite the update. I grew up with sims 2 so my mind is "locked in the grid". For example I rarelly scoop furniture, and I always leave at least one tile space between objects. I dont trust sims can pass between half tile space lol.
i played the sims in 2018 with just the base game and cats and dogs and i would only play in that one starter house in brindleton bay and be so confused by the hit boxes because i didn’t know cheats
I have been playing ts4 2014 (Patch 5) for about 2 weeks now and honestly I like it more then 2024 in a few ways (NOT WHEN MAKING SIMS OR BUILDING. ITS BAD)
I remember I begged for this game when it came out and then the next year for my birthday I was able to get it. I was only able to play for a short time because it crashed out on me and I wasn't able to open it any more after that. I don't have anything to play it on but I've been watching sims videos since like 2012 lol.
Kayla! I’m a fan of yours since last year!!! I have a challenge for you! I call it “THE ULTIMATE CHALLENGE”(base game only, no bb.moveobjects, 1st color swatch only, 20k simoleons and for a family of 5 only) hope you do the challenge lots of love from Philippines!!! ❤️
I played the sims 4 for like 5 minutes when it first released and immediately went back to sims 2. Then one day I saw a sims youtuber playing it and I was like, wow this game looks so much better and started playing it again. I think that was like 2019.
i was (semi) lucky to start playing christmas of 2014 so at least i had pools ghosts the better lighting and the build buy cheats...but oh my god the lack of items and swatches was a STRUGGLE. and ill never forgive them for the old foundation system the new system is one of the absolute best upgrades in the game
i paid over $70 for the deluxe cd. i played the game for HOURS every single day. never got bored. it was the first ting i did when i woke up and the last thing i did when i fell asleep. now that the game is more developed than ever and i have 30gb of cc, i rarely play the game and when i do it's for a few hours at a time. somehow an incomplete junk game was more fun to me than a somewhat incomplete junk game
I know it’s not relevant when it comes to the build mode but remember how I couldn’t get used to the new loading screen and the new look of the plumbite…
You are so right! When it first came out it felt like a downgrade from Sims 3. In fact I played Sims 3 for years giving up on Sims 4 altogether but then I discovered your RUclips channel and decided to give Sims 4 a second chance. And now I love it thanks to you! Love your content ❤
I remember the release Regardless of how bad the launch was i was ENAMORED with the game bc back then i was 13 and had no genuine criteria to what i found good
It’s been a long since I started playing sims start to play sims 1 and 3 in my old brother laptop in 2012 and i actually start playing sims 4 in 2018/9 and DANG I WAS NOT AS LONG A GO AND YET STILL INCREDIBLY LACKY
I will never forget watching one of Vixella first sims 4 let’s plays and seeing her age up a bassinet baby and it turned into a full grown child 😭😭
i have a memory of aging up one of my sims' babies into a child before the toddler update, it's so uncanny😭 why did ea think that was okay💀

This reminds me of when i look back on my old build and i cringe at the lack of decor 😅
Watching this makes me want to go build on my old/first favorite willow creek lot using all the items I remember loving when I first played the game 😂
Bye!!
Sure it needs updating, but unironically I do really like this build! Might download this one and play with it!
All your builds are amazing lilsimsie and the landscape it 100 time better then what I would do
"Maybe this thing comes in blue suburban?" -lilimsie 2024. That makes me laugh. As if blue suburban is a swatch haha
WARNING: 16:25 lilsimsie caught saying "what the f word???" (GRAPHIC CONTENT) 😱😱
I remember opening the game and seeing the white neighborhood screen and no pool tool and being devastated
i played the sims in 2018 with just the base game and cats and dogs and i would only play in that one starter house in brindleton bay and be so confused by the hit boxes because i didn’t know cheats
I bought the “deluxe” version for $80 in 2015 😢😢😢
and basically all you got extra were some animal hats...
yeah 😭😭
You know what really makes this remind me of an early simsie build? The two chess tables. Classic.
i only started playing when the base game went free; this is facinating. very glad for all the updates
okay, dan needs to export these videos at higher bitrate 😲😲😬😬
Remembering sims 4 pewdiepie first time playing it.
it was.. chaotic sometimes.
Would love to see you take this house and make it with the current game!
I feel like now you should renovate it to how you would build it without these limitations for a comparison ❤
i like your sweater like a lot it’s so cute
I have been playing ts4 2014 (Patch 5) for about 2 weeks now and honestly I like it more then 2024 in a few ways (NOT WHEN MAKING SIMS OR BUILDING. ITS BAD)
I remember I begged for this game when it came out and then the next year for my birthday I was able to get it. I was only able to play for a short time because it crashed out on me and I wasn't able to open it any more after that. I don't have anything to play it on but I've been watching sims videos since like 2012 lol.
I refused to buy Sims4 at launch because I didn't want to regress from sims3
Just for the record, I think this looks really nice considering the limitations. Especially the landscaping. 😊 That was fun.
It would be cool to see a 2024 renovation of this build!
I played the sims 4 for like 5 minutes when it first released and immediately went back to sims 2. Then one day I saw a sims youtuber playing it and I was like, wow this game looks so much better and started playing it again. I think that was like 2019.
this is what building in sims freeplay feels like.
i was so excited when dantdm played the sims 4! his release of that series got me into the sims
This just brought memory of my 15 year old self when my ma bought it for me for my birthday lol
so glad i didn't start paying until this year
i was (semi) lucky to start playing christmas of 2014 so at least i had pools ghosts the better lighting and the build buy cheats...but oh my god the lack of items and swatches was a STRUGGLE. and ill never forgive them for the old foundation system the new system is one of the absolute best upgrades in the game
i paid over $70 for the deluxe cd. i played the game for HOURS every single day. never got bored. it was the first ting i did when i woke up and the last thing i did when i fell asleep.
now that the game is more developed than ever and i have 30gb of cc, i rarely play the game and when i do it's for a few hours at a time.
somehow an incomplete junk game was more fun to me than a somewhat incomplete junk game
I know it’s not relevant when it comes to the build mode but remember how I couldn’t get used to the new loading screen and the new look of the plumbite…
oh my godd i remember that😭 i thought it looked so tacky
right 😭😭 i HATED it
You are so right! When it first came out it felt like a downgrade from Sims 3. In fact I played Sims 3 for years giving up on Sims 4 altogether but then I discovered your RUclips channel and decided to give Sims 4 a second chance. And now I love it thanks to you! Love your content ❤
this was such a fun throwback!!
I can’t believe the game lacked so many basic functions at release … I got it in 2018 so fortunately I didn’t experience much of this
I'd love to see you renovate this house the way you would do it now, with all of the packs you want etc.
You should go back and give this house a 2024 makeover!
I remember the release
Regardless of how bad the launch was i was ENAMORED with the game bc back then i was 13 and had no genuine criteria to what i found good
This game is wildly different now than when it was first released back in ye olde 2014, which I think is an awesome thing, quite honestly
Enjoyed every second vid! You nailed it!
It’s been a long since I started playing sims start to play sims 1 and 3 in my old brother laptop in 2012 and i actually start playing sims 4 in 2018/9 and DANG I WAS NOT AS LONG A GO AND YET STILL INCREDIBLY LACKY
You forgot the “pool” aka the fountain
