Secretariat is my #1 race horse. Nobody is as good as him. I love him like my own life. And I still remember the time when I first saw him run. . .what a thrill. My heart just skips a beat once he gets the lead by 3/4 lengths. I am SOO glad that producers are making a movie about him, he deserves it as much as anybody.
Secretariat gives me goosebumps every time i watch him run. He looks so powerful and strong it kinda gives you hope and confidence that you can do anything. I
Oh how I remember this day so well ... way back in October 1973. My family and I (was a kid back then) went to Woodbine for Big Red's final race. The track was SO unbelievably crowded, the weather was cold, raining, windy, nasty. But it was worth it to see Secretariat win his final race. None of us were disappointed, it will be in our memories forever. The buzz-on at Woodbine that day was unbelievable.... everyone in the track was in a good mood, very excited and upbeat to Big Red.

I wonder how the Canadiens felt when Secretariat blazed by their super horse Kennedy Road like he was standing still? Classic moment when the announcer says "Here he comes and he's all yours" before he crosses the finish line. I was 8 when Secretariat retired and my grandmother told me to take a good look at him because I'll never see another one like him! How correct she was!
Just a couple of comments in response to some of the things said by others. First, I read somewhere that his stride covered 25 feet. Second, although he only ran a couple of races on the turf, his trainer said he ran even better on grass than dirt. And finally, Turcotte said that riding him was the easiest of any other horse he rode. I prefer to think that after this race Secretariat just sprouted wings and flew away to Heaven where he runs today.

I was 13 when I watched all of the TC races as well as this one on TV. Nothing personified hard work and the drive to win like this superstar of superstars. Secretariat's trainer Lucien Laurin and jockey Ron Turcotte were Canadians and so it is very fitting that his final race was run on Canadian soil. Too bad Ron didn't get the opportunity to ride. Nevertheless those Canadian ties made Canadians very proud. Allowing Secretariat to be showcased in Canada for his final race was a classy decision by Penny. She should be granted honorary Canadian citizenship.

I was there on this day. My parents made the drive up from Buffalo. I was only 13 so I honestly don't remember much. I just feel fortunate that I saw his last race in person. Love your videos CF. Can't wait for the movie this fall.

I am the proud owner of a Secretariat great grandson. His race name is Apres Midi...but we call him Kelso :) Woodbine, Tbred, May 23, Race 4 My horse is number 8....races just as good as his great grandpappy :)
I think it's fun that Secretariat won this race with Eddie Maple onboard and had the blanket of roses with the Canadian Maple leaf thrown over his shoulders. :)
I think I have watched everything on the web about the magnificent horse! I am in awe of him I was too young to remember him in his prime but wow, he was the 'man'!!
I don't know why but I am still in love with this guy, 54 yrs old now and saw him at Woodbine , his last race, I was 15....remember what I was wearing and remeber it was a rainy Sunday in Toronto.....I am now reading the book by Bill Nack, had a ticket for years and can't find it however I do have to tell you he was something special....There has to be a reason I still think of him..........Good Good Boy!!
The part I love is when he is coming out of the far turn into the stretch. Huge puffs of steam leaves his nostrils,he looked like a big red train. That image is what I see when I think of this dude. Also Eddie Maple didn't need to use his syick,but he must have caught up with awe riding this incredible red horse.

Kennedy ROAD was the 2 year old champion in Canada he was the best there & yet secretariat play with them even with his bad legs there are many champions in their own time WAR ADMIRAL,NOTHERN DANCER,AFFIRME ALSO HAD THEIR OWN QUALITIES IN THEIR TIME BUt none had what sec.had the gift that only was given the immortals like secretariat he ran from 5 to a 1& 1/2 miles in any kind of surf in todays racing world there none comparable to him even if they made hybrid secretariat would have smoken them too people do not realize even today that secretariat was no ordinary horse frankel & other EUROPEAN horses they just don't get it because they never saw sec.when I was at Belmont I did not bet I was there to see something that I would never see again in my life time or in any other time those who were lucky to see greatness know what am talking about for he belong to us even for a shot period of time.after all what is left but memories .

She became a jockey in 1969, winning the Paumonok Handicap at Aqueduct in 1973 riding North Sea. She became the first woman to win a major race in the USA. At 5' 7", she was taller and heavier than most jockeys. She retired from racing in 1980. That same year, she married actor Fred Astaire. She was 45 years his junior. She remained married to Astaire until his death in 1987.

someone said Riva ridge did not exist well here is the proof 1969 to 1985 , Secretariat, ridden by Turcotte, defeated Riva Ridge, ridden by Eddie Maple. During their careers both horses wore the blue and white checkers of Meadow Stable.
How strange to see Robyn Smith as most Americans knew her as Mrs.Fred Astaire. Robyne Smith was born Melody Dawn Miller. Her biological father deserted her and her mother at her birth. Her mother was 17 when she was born. Melody's mother was declared mentally unstable and Melody was placed in a foster home. She was adopted and renamed Caroline Smith.
Boy, that Penny Tweedy -- she is as forminable as her horse. It's a fairly dull film (except for that sportwriter's coat -- did he steal it off his sleeping niece?), but she has the sharpest thing to say before the race, and manages at all times to avoid cliché. What a dame!
I think the powers behind American horse racing were what... resentful? of the Turcotte's achievements w/ Secretariat. Other jockeys are fm other countries, but U.S. always looked upon Canada as our little "brother" or less than U.S. They gave Laffit Pincay the award in 1973 (can't think of name at the moment, Eclipse?) bcse he was 1st to win $4Mill, instead of to Turcotte/Secretariat for winning TC after 25 yrs, and the WAY S did it, in each race. Bill Nack made scathing comment on this.
What couldn't this horse do? My God! He won on off tracks, dirt and turf and not just beating a bunch of nags. He beat Champions on their surface and was only a 3 year old when he did it.

The horse is magic in motion. Had we never had Secretariat as a yardstick to measure greatness, we would not know what greatness is.
