I'm not even interested in horse racing, but have always been fascinated by Secretariat. When there is a once in a century talent, it's impossible not to be awed by it. Even a casual observer like me can appreciate the beauty of his performances.

My 4 young daughters, and I, visited Secretariat twice in the mid 80's. No photographs, or video, could never show what an amazing, magnificent, horse he was. They even put my youngest daughter on his back. She was then 3 years old, and at 43, she still remembers that today.

I was at Belmont in June of 73 when he went into the far turn running like a "tremendous machine". The Sham fans were out in mass to root him home. They had Puerto Rican Steel Bands there and the place was pulsating with anticipation. The movie shows a battle in the backstretch but that was for effect. In fact. Secretariat disposed of Sham early in the duel down the backstretch. I can still remember Turcotte looking over at the teletimer board to see what the fractions were as he roared down the final 1/8th mile. Secretariat was phenomenal but in recent times my favorite is Afleet Alex who should have been a triple crown winner.. He got caught in traffic in the derby, was practically knocked off his feet in the Preakness and regained his feet with his ears pinned to win anyway (the interference was way greater than that by the horse who was disqualified a couple years ago). His win in the Belmont was pretty darn impressive.
Alex was a little guy but his intelligence was obvious… calm and collected before and after the race.
