GALERIES LAFAYETTE BERLIN: LANG LANG AND BERLIN, A TRUE LOVE STORY
Lang Lang on the 19th of January 2015 in Berlin. A great event, a world premiere. The launch of his fragrances, a worldwide exclusivity with a prestigious partner: Galeries Lafayette Berlin.
Working closely with the French company "Art in A Bottle", the genius artist has created a magic world, where perfume and music, yin and yang, women and men are connected by a fantastic harmony in a unique moment to share his emotions through two amazing fragrances, one for HER, and another for HIM.
Two amazing olfactive compositions orchestrated in three movements like a piece of music: a fresh and spicy opening, a jasmin heart as a chorus, and a splendid woody finale.
Two masterpieces as personal gifts from the artist, subtly encapsulated in a beautiful bottle, scarved like a piano, in soft curves, like the flow of his music. A total new approach to the fragrance world.

It's nothing but breathtaking. Lang Lang, this orchestra, the conductor Mr. Rattle. I'm 26 and love Rachmaninoff since I could discover this incredible heritage by the movie 'Shine'.
I was 21 back then and went to Sofia, Bulgaria, to live and work there in social work. 2016/17 was a special snowy and freezing cold winter. You can't imagine the feeling of listening to THIS and walking through the snowy pavements of Sofia, which can be very nostalgic and romantic on evenings. The architecture, the language, the evening restaurants, the huge boulevards.
In other ocasions, such as during daytime, Sofia reminds one of much uglier realities of poverty, poor economy, abused surroundings and untreated pavements. But those can be found in every city, if searched. Yet I want to highlight the addictive experience of bulgarian style.

This is a wonderful Piano Concerto by the great Sergei Vasilyevich Rachmaninoff (1873 - 1943) who had to leave his beloved Russia behind after the upheaval of the Revolution of 1917. All his music is so soulful, full of the Russian spirit. I also love his orchestral works and pieces such as the Midnight Vespers. One of my favourite composers and I think there are a few recordings of the great man himself recorded towards the end of his 70 year life. Lang Lang plays this beautifully I think, he really gets it. It is not a schmalzy performance at all. Thanks for posting this gem for us all to enjoy.

Earlier, when I listened to Rachmaninoff's second concert, I was terribly angry that some of the audience coughed in the pauses. Only then did I realize that it was they who were struggling to hold back their tears and stifle their sobs. And it's not that the music is minor or depressive. On the contrary, it is like a May storm, cleanses the soul and causes tears of joy and delight.

I couldn't agree more. When you hear younger pianists play this they tend to rush through it. This is played with a clear passion and understanding of the the majesty of the piece.

The first movement was just epic, it leaves me speechless. I know that some might be sensitive about clapping between movements, but I think for such a great piece with such a passionate ending, more importantly, the two movements are not really closely connected, the performers wouldn't mind some applause to acknowledge their efforts. Just personal opinion.

well when you are truly awed to the deep down of your soul, you forget to clap or remark or shout. you become frozen when you encounter absoluteness of something, be it beauty or cruelty. so greater respect through silence than clapping.

    Rachmaninoff.
What did this wonderful and talented person hear and see in his life
That he could create such absolute beauty
    In sound
That makes you want to 'Oh God'
Almost weeping in ecstasy as each note caresses your ears and heart
And as usual Lang Lang intensifies the sound
In a way that Rachmaninoff would have always aimed for

To elizabethmaemmann: You're smitten, to put it mildly, with this well-played (and VERY thoroughly acted out) performance, but do you have any idea, any idea at ALL, how many (perhaps close to a hundred) superb interpretations of this popular concerto have been offered to the public? Lang's performance being described as 'one of its kind' - - well, I'm not sure how to respond to such a remark, except to say that his wide selection of embarrassing 'faces' and physical 'gestures' can definitely deserve to be called 'one of a kind.' I would earnestly hope that after Lang's light begins to dim (and it will!), another such flamboyant, audience-obsessed pianist won't appear from the holy clouds above.

    • @richardvolpe7664

Well, YOU look at those facial espressions! Do you think other pianists should try to follow suit by "working their faces" as much as their fingers? Do you also think that unless they "make with the faces", there'd be little chance for any feeling to come through? Of course, it should be said that Lang wants you to gaze lovingly at his pretty face. You think he's rehearsed his mannerisms for nothing?
