Grew up in the NYC area '60's and '70's. Every neighborhood had a few unique family-owned pizza places. Just insanely great food. Each one that shuts down is a loss to a community.

Same for me, except I grew up in the 70s and 80s. I lived in Sheepshead Bay and while we had plenty of mom and pop spots all over the place, places like Connie's Pizzeria which I just learned recently closed down as well and Mei Mei's Chinese (which is still open AFAIK) are just huge losses to the community.

The oldest diner in San Antonio, "Earl Abel's" was an incredible place with a lot of history. They closed after being bought out of the location for an offer that could not be refused to build a sky rise. They reopened in a new location, but the charm was lost. The food is the same, but there was something about the original building. It was pure class before.

Let's be honest the younger generation isn't going for this. They would rather take a selfie with their Pizza for the gram than wake up at 5:00am and start mixing dough. Plus the pizzeria used to be the neighborhood gathering place, now despite it being romantized, people are eating all types of different foods (sushi, take out, etc.) so the Pizzeria might not have the social significance as before. Times change.

Owner describes the place and the experience as “great” yet closing the shop after 50+ years instead of letting an employee take the reins or selling to an interested party makes zero sense. Same thing with Lenny’s Pizza in Bensonhurst last year. That place was used in Saturday Night Fever. An institution now gone forever. Like that customer mentions, places like this close and nothing can take its place… gone forever. Understandable when owners are sick and want to move on but this is a profitable business that doesn’t need to shut down imo.

@@el_duderino_man Not sure if you follow these classic pizzeria closings in NYC but they never reopen. I've watched hundreds close over the past 25 years, can't recall one that reopened in a different location. The owners seem like they're old and ready to get out of the game. My point is this is a profitable business. Closing down businesses that make money makes zero sense as we're living in volitile times for startups. 70% restaurants close in the first year.

As someone who worked for a very busy independent gas station for 23 years this brings back memories. The owner was 85 (rip) and wasn't even at the store, but made the decision to close it. Everyone there worked there for years. They litterally just closed it and it wasn't listed for sale till he died months later by his kids. We were done wrong. There was no reason to close it. We ran it without him there for years. Ill never forget the day my mom texted me that information.

The also-rans try to improve with "custom pies" and fancy ingredients, but they never, EVER, come close to a plain slice of New York's finest !!! Oh, and it's a SLICE of pizza, not a cut, and it's a PIE !!!! Some places say "We're not a bakery, we don't serve pies." Well......BUNK TO THAT !!!!!

It’s sad to see them go just like Lenny‘s closed. Almost a year ago but they closed for the same reason. They were getting older and working six and seven days a week. All those hours are not easy and at least they’re doing it for the right reason to spend more time with the family. Owning your own business takes a lot of sacrifice. The only thing I wonder is, would they not be able to put people in place and just work part time. They would make less money, but they would still have some money coming in and not lose the place altogether, unless if someone offered them a real nice penny for the property something I think happen with Lenny. I’m not sure but I think someone came in wanted the property for medical buildings and who knows if somebody paid them some big bucks it was worth it to leave again that is just something I heard it may not be true, but I don’t know why else you would give up and not have someone else run it for you and I know you can never trust somebody as much but with today’s cameras and technology it’s not like back in the days.
