Agreed, I said the same on the state dishes video he did, if you know you know. Additionally, CT is going to have a smaller sample size than the other larger cities, so may not get as many votes overall due to that reason.
You can actually find really good pizza in most medium to large cities. New Haven has excellent pizza but not the best. NYC pizza (and food in general) is the best because they have the highest standards.

Hey Josh, love your videos. Last year I took my family on scotts pizza tour and our favorite was Linustri as well. Scott is amazing and knows everything about pizza and gave me a tour of many pizza shops around New York City and I also got to sit down and talk with the owner of Luigi's. He is the nicest man ever and I love his family's story, I am so glad you got to meet them both. When Scott took us to Lindustri he ordered us a Burrata pizza and it was the best thing ever. He showed me the inside and knew everyone very well. What amazed me about Lindustri was the air tight room that they use to keep the dough the right temperature while making it. In the end he took us to a Nutella pizza place which i told myself i was too full but ended up eating 3 slices and Scott let me take over for a bit to make the pizzas. Overall a 10/10 experience would try again, and I am glad you got to experience as well. Keep up the amazing work.
You can only have food that is 9/10. That last point is dictated by external factors. - How hungry you are - How much crave for salt does your body have - How hydrated are you - What mood are you in? - Are you in love? - The feelings you have from the current environment that you are eating in.
Shout out to Scott! I went on one of his tours and it was absolutely one of the best things I have done in NYC. Perfect combo of history, science, charm, and (of course) great NY pizza!
now we need the opposite spectrum, Joshua tried every Frozen Pizza, and then tries to make the best version of a frozen pizza that still tastes amazing but can be stored in the freezer

Like there are certain cars that are objectively worse if you measure the car on a horsepower per dollar scale. That's not a terribly relevant scale for most people though. Also usually the "best" pizza shop in any given city doesn't necessarily represent the breadth and width of what's actually available for that style of pizza even if it's the most talked about. Sure it's one way to do it. There's a lot more generally though, and limiting it to that is necessary to scope the video appropriately, but doesn't make for a good real comparison with any meaning. Top 5 at least would probably be needed to get some variation and see kind of what's available in that style. I get the need to limit it for time, it just feels... clickbaity? This pizza is phenomenal. The crust, the sauce, the chew. It's absolutely perfect. This pizza also gave humanity limitless energy, solved world hunger, and cured cancer and all other diseases. I give it a solid 6.9 ! Joshua Weissmann, probably.

It's a travesty that New Haven didn't make the cut... There are 3 pizza places there that are regularly voted best in the country. Would have loved to see what you thought of Modern's pie, that's my personal favorite.
I'm from New Haven and grew up eating their pizza, which is excellent. That being said, there are others located in surrounding towns( East Haven, West Haven, North Haven, Wallingford,& Hamden) that are just as good or better. I think it's all a matter of preference as well as who happens to be making the pizza at the time you're there. So many variables..

NH is just the epicenter of that, but yeah most places in CT are pretty damn good and I agree there are places in greater New Haven County that I like better than 2 of the big 3 in New Haven.... Modern will always be my favorite, but CT in general has some killer pie
As a Chicagoan Lou Malnati's is special from the sausage puck. Personally don't go there if I don't get the puck. I by FAR prefer the Chicago tavern specifically from Aurelio's
Lou Malnati’s is close to flavorless and no offense but offense, for people with no taste buds or that like little to no seasoning. There are so many places that are FAR better. Pequads, Beggars… I’ll even take Giordano’s over them.
Feel like New Haven was done dirty in this video - no surprise that big cities won with how you selected restaurants based on # of people recommending them. With that methodology, it's actually impressive New Haven was even mentioned given how small it and CT even is. Either way I don't agree with your list, Lucali's is one of the best pizza's i've had and Luigi's is pretty mid compared to NH and other NY pies. Also Lou Malnati's is a huge chain around Chicago, they have something like 50+ restaurants so that score is highly dependent on which one you go to
Very accurate about Lou's. It kills me when they go to a suburb branch (yes, I live in the suburbs). Still good, but not iconic like the original downtown.
100% on Lou Malnati's. Last time I went to Chicago, I got carryout from one of the chain locations and it was fucking disgusting! It had a greasy water slick floating on the top of the pie and it smelled like the cheese had spoiled. Thankfully I got to go to Pequod's before I left town and had a MUCH better deep-dish experience there.
To be fair, even for most around Chicago, deep dish is a once in a while treat. The other classic pizza in the area has a thin crisp crust, often cut into squares (if you don't like the extra crisp edge pieces, leave them for those who do).
That fan interaction is how every fan interaction should be. That person was so respectful. I only hope they would have maintained that respect if the answer had been "no" too.
It's hilarious to watch Joshua casually making the rounds to some of the most legendary pizza spots, only to treat them like they're decent Little Caesars that you should get on the go, but only if you're really hungry.

Don't do culinary school. Don't know where you're at in life or how old you are, but culinary wages don't offset the cost. You're starting off with debt you don't need. You'll learn a lot just entering the work force if you're intentional about the restaurants you're applying at and know which cuisines you want to learn first. Back of house is so volatile and pay is so poor to average that you'll move up quickly if you stay the course. If someone else is footing the bill and you don't have to pay it back, good for you -- go ahead. But I used to work as a cook and am constantly surrounded by culinary professionals who regret schooling and struggle to pay it back on a cook's wages.

From what I understand, many high end restaurants and patissere won't even consider someone without professional culinary training too. Fair point about the debt load, that is significant and something to be weighed up. Seems like best of both worlds might be a bit of both, part time study and working in a kitchen alongside that. Whether that is viable I have no idea
@@micah1754 In the kitchen world, cooking school is seen as a path rich kids take, or those hoping to hop the line. Some misguided souls think they can get hired as chefs upon graduation. The skills translate, but none of the cadence or culture of the job does. You still start at the bottom of the bottom, as a prep or line cook at an inconsequential station, making pennies paying off debt. Even worse for you if you're subsidized by your parents once you're in the work force. What I'm telling them is that they can get straight to cooking without all of that debt. 6mos at a good restaurant, starting with prep work. Then go work at a great one. Or a a world class one.

Considering a NYC pizza place (Una Pizza Napoletana) took the #2 spot of the 50 best pizza places in the World (8 other spots in the 50 also go to America pizza places) as ranked by Sicilians in Naples; I'd say that pizza in American has already earned that "seat at the culinary table".
Considering italian americans pumped up italian cuisine almost to the point of people romanticising over italian food is something not a lot of people realise and italians from Italy take it for granted. There wouldn’t be pizza without america and hollywood.

PEQUODS. My favorite Chicago pizza. And it’s what I think is proper deep dish, not the upside down cheese casserole that everyone gets up in arms about. The cheese and topping are above the sauce, where they belong, and they’re cooked in a deep dish pan that’s been seasoned for decades with the best caramelized cheese crust out there. (Admittedly, it might be close to Detroit style) That said, NY pizza is the shit, I’d probably go for that if i had both options readily available.
I think he was expecting a New York style pizza for every single one along with the flavour profile. I personally like the Detroit style over the New York style. If you're judging every pizza by how closely they resemble the structure, taste, and profile of a New York style pizza then New York style will come out on top.
Pequods is my favorite deep dish 'Za but I wouldn't consider it "proper" since Burt came out with that version ages after the original Chicago deep dish in the 40s. I like Pizzeria Uno and Due for that og title.

We ended up going back to Sally's, but I have to say, I do sort of feel like that was a missed opportunity. The upshot though is that it started a tradition of annual pizza vacation, and we are on a mission to try every regional style of pizza!

As an NYC resident and NY pizza devotee, I've got to say I really, truly love deep dish pizza too. But it's HEAVY and can only tolerate it in mild doses. Way too intense!
Lou's is crispy on the outside, but the rest is like crumbly, stale Wonderbread. High gluten winter wheat makes a much better crust than all-purpose cake flour does. I'll make them at home in a century old cast iron pan, but with dough from my neighborhood pizza shop for a ridiculously good deep-dish.
I always I love seeing Detroit-style pizza getting the attention it deserves. I wish you had the chance to explore more of Michigan's incredible pizza scene though. I agree with you. I’m a New Haven native. However, I think the reality is that Josh is not a born and raised pizza lover - or what he ate growing up was super different from a New Haven/New York style. He rates these so low, it clearly is not his thing. He made an episode about the best food from each state and he absolutely SHAT on Frank Pepe’s. I’ve ignored Josh’s pizza opinion since then. I think he like more American Basic style like Papa John’s or something with the thicker crush, tangier sauce, and all that kinda over-exaggeration
I love Josh's videos, but everything I've learned about him has taught me that his salt tolerance is a little higher than most of us. I believe this is why he's constantly wanting a saltier crust, and calling most fast food bland.

@Manchupacabra it originated in Chicago. The difference around the rest of the U.S. is they use wheat flour dough. In Chicago we use part corn meal and use corn oil instead of olive oil.

As a european, seeing the prices of some of these pizza places combined with the apparent need to tip like 20% at least on top seems absolutely insane
As an American, it's insane to me too.
Tip is usually for delivery or dine in and optional if carry out with a tip jar 20% is more then usual as people tip from 14-15% or more depending on the person a good pizza shouldn’t cost more then 15-20 bucks tbf people don’t need to tip for pickup too
Yeah, its no wonder American poverty is at an all time high... is not uncommon to see a $35 price tag for a pizza, if you include tax n tip, you end up paying $50 for something marginally better than a chain pie.
Then here you are in Sweden and seeing a $14 pizza, thinking that its the most expensive pizza you've seen. A regular pizza here is about $10-12 ish@@NotSureIfSrs_x

- How hungry you are
- How much crave for salt does your body have
- How hydrated are you
- What mood are you in?
- Are you in love?
- The feelings you have from the current environment that you are eating in.

100% on Lou Malnati's. Last time I went to Chicago, I got carryout from one of the chain locations and it was fucking disgusting! Thankfully I got to go to Pequod's before I left town and had a MUCH better deep-dish experience there.
Doing a pizza review like this is absolutely the reason why I never take you seriously as a chef
To be fair, even for most around Chicago, deep dish is a once in a while treat. The other classic pizza in the area has a thin crisp crust, often cut into squares (if you don't like the extra crisp edge pieces, leave them for those who do).

The skills translate, but none of the cadence or culture of the job does. Even worse for you if you're subsidized by your parents once you're in the work force.
What I'm telling them is that they can get straight to cooking without all of that debt. 6mos at a good restaurant, starting with prep work. Then go work at a great one. Or a a world class one.

@@st_420 “explains” is being pretty generous. He explains how he’s gonna rate it but not out of what and compared to anything. I and other just think it’s wild for someone to rate something, say only good things about it, and give it a 6-7 out of 10. That’s like watching your favorite film of all time, zero flaws it’s a masterpiece to you, giving it a solid 5 out of 10. Weird as hell
I took my family in a Scott's Pizza Tour when we were in NYC. Such a great way to experience many different pizza places without all the leg work. Also did a Chicago pizza tour too. Awesome episode Josh & Scott making me want to visit NYC again just for the pizza 🍕😊.

When it comes to Chicago Pizza, you're better off with thin crust or tavern-style pizza. Places like Vito and Nick's, Palermo's, Phil's, or Gino's East are the places to try. For other styles, George's, Pequod's, Milly's, Aurelio's or Giordano's are excellent choices.
Vitttoooossss, classic spot, cheap and great.
EXACTLY!!!
Im thinking the same thing. We don’t even eat deep dish like that
Tavern style is the way to go. You can tell Joshua prefers NY style, surprised he didn't even include New Haven style. Personally, I don't need to fold my pizza (I'm not doing laundry) or want to worry about toppings flopping into my lap, so NY style is not my thing.
That's why he should stop having "Votes" they are terrible
Gotta tell ya again, if you get to Brazil anytime, try São Paulo pizza (ask for locals for good joints). Avoid the bizarre toppings and go straight for margueritas, and make a tour like this one.
Josh was so gracious when the fan interrupted the taste of his first slice of NY pizza-so kind and generous with his time. Made my mama & teacher heart swell. His mama raised him right. ❤
It's cool that he did, but nobody owes you their time. I'm this case he was literally advertising his presence with that ridiculous car, so you could call it a public appearance, but in normal daily life, he doesn't owe anyone his time. I don't blame any celebrities who don't do fan interactions when out in the wild.
Hmmm this is honestly one of the best things I've ever eaten. I can't say enough about the taste, the texture, the ingredients & how it's call came together. Honestly, I will remember where I was when I first tasted this. I'll rate it a 5.2.
That "burn" from the excess flour is intentional. It actually pairs really well with the tomato sauce if its done well and not too much of it
I like Joshua's honesty.. 😂😂 Great video!
The disrespect to New Haven is INSANE. Josh owes us a dedicated video to just their pizza based on the disrespect from last video and this one. Specifically Zenelis on Wooster
Well how do you think the people in Philadelphia feel 😂about
@@gullreefclub No disrespect but Philly aint in anyones top 5 lmao. There are 3 meccas of pizza in the US. New York, Chicago and New Haven, sometimes Jersey sneaks in but their just New Yorks younger brother so they just get grouped in lmao

As a New Yorker, can confirm New Haven pizza is part of the conversation now
Not even bothering to watch the video if he’s not standing in line at Peppe’s
First time seeing your videos. Good stuff Josh.
I did this in New York a few years back. Went to 30 pizza shops in one day, most boroughs thoughout even took the boat even to Staten Island. Plain cheese slice from each. Joe's slice was 1 of my bottom 3, the best of the 30 slices was Bleecker Street Pizza.
Is that the same as John's of Bleecker?
You’re an expert then, as far as I’m concerned. Question for you: I compared the John’s pizza at bleeker street with the chain John’s pizza and I was more impressed with the chain John’s pizza. The best was either at the theater district or at Columbus circle. Your thoughts? More moist.
Thanks for this video. Impossible to capture"the best pizza" out of 2000+ options and for millions of personal preferences but you all did a great job. I know you highlighted Scott in you video, but a link "below" for his web page would have been good for everyone. Next time I'm in NYC, I'll try to book a tour with him. Have agreat new year
Don't waste your time. NYC pizza is hype which is showed down the throat of tourists. There is a trend of "gourmet" hipster joints that sell you decent pies at 2x the cost of what they should cost. NYC pizza is a cheap slice sold on a bus stop and should be priced as one. It's bs cheese made with restaurant Depot purchased flour. It's good when it's cheap. Try good pizza, it's at New Heaven CT. Original Pepe's hands down beats all NYC pizzerias.
@jamesdean1283 Last I checked, New Haven didn't have John's of Bleeker and Luigis. Nothing in Connecticut tops New Yorks best.
@@smileytlj23By mentioning John's shows you are quite lacking in pizza iq. It's a decent joint and is not a true NYC pizza. A cheap first date place for a nearby student on a budget that became a hyped up tourist trap. It's just ok, nothing memorable unless you are stuck in Manhattan. Louigis, rip-off. A basic slice, turned off by the freaking oven somehow made into a classic. A hipster revival bs. DiFara, sh'*t neighborhood with highly overpriced pizza...ha ha
If you do come to New Haven, Sally's, Modern, Pepe's White Clam, and BAR's mashed-potato bacon are the ones to get. People sleep on BAR pizza but bacon-mash has been becoming very popular over the past 10 years in CT.
Check out One6Three. Killer mashed potato pie there
ya the entire world knows that
When my friends and I learned that New Haven had their own style of pizza, we had to try it so took a ~9 hour road trip. We of course went to the big 3, and had room in the itinerary for one more; we had every intention of trying BAR. But after a series of inconveniences, we found ourselves back near Sally's, and had to ask ourselves the question "will we be more sad to have never tried BAR, or more sad to never have Sally's again?"
We ended up going back to Sally's, but I have to say, I do sort of feel like that was a missed opportunity.
The upshot though is that it started a tradition of annual pizza vacation, and we are on a mission to try every regional style of pizza!
I had a baked potato with all the fixings slice in Arizona 👍
I've lived here (NYC) my entire life. I couldnt tell you whats better. the pizza, the bagels, the beef patties or the chopped cheese. ALL are perfect here.

Props to Josh getting his recognition out in the wild. Well deserved. Amazing content.
To reiterate what others have correctly pointed out: Connecticut is where it's at, and everyone knows it. Not visiting New Haven is a huge oversight.
Also, Lombardi's on Spring st. deserves some attention. It's the oldest pizzeria in America, and still one of the best.
Chicago area native here: Deep Dish is solid, but its very heavy and its not something you want more than once or twice in a year. A good tavern style pizza is what you grab when your having people over or going to the bar.
Lou's is supposed to be crispy on the edge and bottom. He missed the entire point of the Buttercrust. The best part IS THE CRUST.
I ate deep dish once 3 years ago. And that was it for me. Never again. Lol. Too filling
Bianchis in Ottawa. Thank me later
The right thing to do is go to New Haven and try their pizza .. the viewers are counting on you 🙂
I always I love seeing Detroit-style pizza getting the attention it deserves. I wish you had the chance to explore more of Michigan's incredible pizza scene though. Buddy’s has its place in history, but in my opinion, it’s not the best representation of what Detroit has to offer. There are so many spots that do it better now. Niki’s Pizza, Loui’s, Pie Sci, Grandma Bob’s, and Shield’s are just a few of the amazing options. Please consider a Michigan pizza tour part two. I think you’d love diving deeper into our pizza scene!
I've been following your content for years now, and I'm glad to see you are keeping your content consistent from episode to episode. Glad to watch, and keep them hungry.

Look he spent two minutes in two other cities and then dicked his way around NYC. He has no skill except buying an Escalade and wrapping his face on the side.
I wonder what Scott the pizza expert would have rated the places. It would have ben fun to see a side by side list.
11:50 I believe pizza is just a vehicle for eating oregano! The more the better, and only fresh thyme matches it. And for an interesting bit of trivia; when tomatoes are planted next to oregano, they taste better. Seriously!
I love that Scott is touting the virtue of the NY pizza scene while rocking the hat of a spot from my hometown, Portland! Mad respect!

@@bribnkr13 So true!

Im really glad Scott was on this episode, love him. Was super happy to see Lucali here too, despite your low rating of it.
I love Josh's videos, but everything I've learned about him has taught me that his salt tolerance is a little higher than most of us. I believe this is why he's constantly wanting a saltier crust, and calling most fast food bland.
I got your "An Unapologetic Cookbook" for Christmas. I made the pesto gnocci today, absolutely loved it, can't wait to try out more recipes, thank you!

I'm so sad it wasn't tavern style instead of Chicago deep dish. every Chicago suburb has a dozen tavern style place and they all rock.
Tavern style is by far our best 🤌🏽
Believe it or not, the rest of the country also has thin crust pizza.
When he said deep dish from Chicago I immediately said "who tf voted for that over tavern/pub style"
@Manchupacabra it originated in Chicago. The difference around the rest of the U.S. is they use wheat flour dough. In Chicago we use part corn meal and use corn oil instead of olive oil.
