"This is a damn near f***ing perfect pizza. I'm going to give this a solid, powerful, standing 7.0" - Joshua Weissman

The guy has the worst and most inconsistent ratings. Josh just has too high standards.
@@oneblacksunreal, normal person can give 10/10 to a pizza hut
@@oneblacksun no. because realistically 10/10 would mean its better than anything in existance as you cant go higher than that. 5 if the middle of the scale, so it roughly means average, and average is good, nothing remarkable, but still basic good that youll still eat. thats very logical. if 7 is bad, wtf is 1.

Not going to New Haven is criminal, it deserves it's own video.
Agreed, I said the same on the state dishes video he did, if you know you know. Additionally, CT is going to have a smaller sample size than the other larger cities, so may not get as many votes overall due to that reason.
right waste of video
You can actually find really good pizza in most medium to large cities. New Haven has excellent pizza but not the best. NYC pizza (and food in general) is the best because they have the highest standards.

Best pizza in the world if you like your pizza burnt to a cinder.
Hey Josh, love your videos. Last year I took my family on scotts pizza tour and our favorite was Linustri as well. Scott is amazing and knows everything about pizza and gave me a tour of many pizza shops around New York City and I also got to sit down and talk with the owner of Luigi's. He is the nicest man ever and I love his family's story, I am so glad you got to meet them both. When Scott took us to Lindustri he ordered us a Burrata pizza and it was the best thing ever. He showed me the inside and knew everyone very well. What amazed me about Lindustri was the air tight room that they use to keep the dough the right temperature while making it. In the end he took us to a Nutella pizza place which i told myself i was too full but ended up eating 3 slices and Scott let me take over for a bit to make the pizzas. Overall a 10/10 experience would try again, and I am glad you got to experience as well. Keep up the amazing work.
Chicago deep dish is for tourists, the locals eat a bar style with weird rectangular slices.

@@Johnny1iq To each his own - but I had Chicago deep dish and it's my least favourite style pizza by a long shot. I really like detroit style BUT my favourite has to be the Neapolitan wood-fired pizza. But yeah, NY pizza is the best American pizza. I really prefer the traditional, rustic style found in Italy.
I agree with your statement.

@@shambooki4224 No, not square pizza, they have a round thin pizza they cut in rectangles and call it a pub pizza I believe, it's been probably twenty years since my last visit. It was a wild town and a fun time.
As a european, seeing the prices of some of these pizza places combined with the apparent need to tip like 20% at least on top seems absolutely insane
As an American, it's insane to me too.
Tip is usually for delivery or dine in and optional if carry out with a tip jar 20% is more then usual as people tip from 14-15% or more depending on the person a good pizza shouldn’t cost more then 15-20 bucks tbf people don’t need to tip for pickup too
Yeah, its no wonder American poverty is at an all time high... is not uncommon to see a $35 price tag for a pizza, if you include tax n tip, you end up paying $50 for something marginally better than a chain pie.
Then here you are in Sweden and seeing a $14 pizza, thinking that its the most expensive pizza you've seen. A regular pizza here is about $10-12 ish@@NotSureIfSrs_x

@@yuhyuh8171 I mean like you're not wrong. But I feel like he judges a lot of these without the context of the level of venue, intention. and what/who they intend to target.
Like there are certain cars that are objectively worse if you measure the car on a horsepower per dollar scale. That's not a terribly relevant scale for most people though.
Also usually the "best" pizza shop in any given city doesn't necessarily represent the breadth and width of what's actually available for that style of pizza even if it's the most talked about. Sure it's one way to do it. There's a lot more generally though, and limiting it to that is necessary to scope the video appropriately, but doesn't make for a good real comparison with any meaning. Top 5 at least would probably be needed to get some variation and see kind of what's available in that style.
I get the need to limit it for time, it just feels... clickbaity? I think that's the best way to put it. Kind of veering into tik tok attention video territory.
If you went to Pequods instead of Lou’s in Chicago your entire second half would have been filmed in Chicago
Lou’s is like the Pizza Hut of Deep Dish
Pequods is worse than Lou’s. Deep dish is the Pizza Hut of pizza. Chicago thin crust is the best pizza on planet earth. Deep dish is designed to keep tourists away from the local joints with actual good pizza
From Harlem and the South BX- Patsy's Pizza is the #1 spot for me and I always reccomend people go there whenever theyre in the city!!!
Josh the kinda guy to make his own pizza and say its better than everything else in America because he's a chef😆
Well that would make sense because he has the skill to dial in to his exact subjectivity.
@paulriccio5333 absolutely correct. I'm one of the best cooks I know, because I'm cooking to exactly what i want the taste to be.
I never have too much or too little of a flavor. Impossible to do for general public cooking.
The ego is real with him.
@@cyber_crypto Its not about ego... Its about personal preference. Mass cooking for the public you dont dial in tastes that only you like, but home cooks always like their food more because after years of taste you know what you want.

This dude let youtube views convince him that he's one of the best chefs in the world. It's laughable honestly.
Feel like New Haven was done dirty in this video - no surprise that big cities won with how you selected restaurants based on # of people recommending them. With that methodology, it's actually impressive New Haven was even mentioned given how small it and CT even is. Either way I don't agree with your list, Lucali's is one of the best pizza's i've had and Luigi's is pretty mid compared to NH and other NY pies. Also Lou Malnati's is a huge chain around Chicago, they have something like 50+ restaurants so that score is highly dependent on which one you go to
Very accurate about Lou's. It kills me when they go to a suburb branch (yes, I live in the suburbs). Still good, but not iconic like the original downtown.
NH is night and day better
This guy is literally mad that numbers matter. Imagine being like that.
new haven sucks
100% on Lou Malnati's. Last time I went to Chicago, I got carryout from one of the chain locations and it was fucking disgusting! It had a greasy water slick floating on the top of the pie and it smelled like the cheese had spoiled. Thankfully I got to go to Pequod's before I left town and had a MUCH better deep-dish experience there.
One of the best shows about good food, good resting... This episode is a solid 10.
Joe’s pizza in lower manhattan is fantastic! ( I used to live in NYC) Now retired living in a Sicilian village, I can walk 3 minutes and get some of the best pizza I’ve ever eaten.
It's a travesty that New Haven didn't make the cut... There are 3 pizza places there that are regularly voted best in the country. Would have loved to see what you thought of Modern's pie, that's my personal favorite.
Sally's fresh tomato basil pie is top tier!
I'm from New Haven and grew up eating their pizza, which is excellent. That being said, there are others located in surrounding towns( East Haven, West Haven, North Haven, Wallingford,& Hamden) that are just as good or better. I think it's all a matter of preference as well as who happens to be making the pizza at the time you're there. So many variables..
@@carmelaburrone5029 to clarify when I say "New Haven" I really just mean CT... NH is just the epicenter of that, but yeah most places in CT are pretty damn good and I agree there are places in greater New Haven County that I like better than 2 of the big 3 in New Haven.... Definitely agree with Scott on the cheese pizza as the true test. I'm a lifetime CT native and have tried dozens, if not hundreds of pizzerias in my life and every single time I try a new one I always order a plain cheese pizza (or maybe even a plain tomato pie)., no matter what else I get
A couple years ago my wife asked me "why do you always order a plain pizza when we try a new place?" I said "Simple. Because if you can't do a basic pie right then I have no interest in seeing how that could be made up for or masked by using toppings". She gets it now 🙂
That’s the most boring thing to do-I would never pay that much for basically bread with tomato sauce! Toppings can’t hide a bad crust, that’s impossible! If people like a pepperoni pizza they should order the pepperoni pizza at every location…
its refresing that you are honest with your reviews - appreciate that
He’s not honest at all. His whole brand that he is trying to sell is that you can make better food at home. While that may be the case, you usually need thousands of dollars of equipment which he has access to. This brand he’s trying to sell makes it that he has to put down everything he eats that isn’t made by himself. He’s egotistical and annoying
To be fair, even for most around Chicago, deep dish is a once in a while treat. The other classic pizza in the area has a thin crisp crust, often cut into squares (if you don't like the extra crisp edge pieces, leave them for those who do).
Palermo's was always my favorite...
Aurelio's Pizza though way beter than deep dish
Beggar's is decent, also.

Lou Malnati's sausage and pepperoni deep dish pizza is Chicago's best deep dish pizza. There's a lot of people that don't like deep dish.
As a Chicagoan Lou Malnati's is special from the sausage puck. Personally don't go there if I don't get the puck. I by FAR prefer the Chicago tavern specifically from Aurelio's
I prefer the wood fired Italian pizza.
@@chetleonard169 Like the way pizza is made in Italy?
Lou Malnati’s is close to flavorless and no offense but offense, for people with no taste buds or that like little to no seasoning. There are so many places that are FAR better. Pequads, Beggars… I’ll even take Giordano’s over them.
Gotta come across the border from Detroit to Windsor. We have a massive Italian population and what makes Windsor pizza so unique is we use shredded pepperoni which allows for better coverage and out cheese is made locally by a company called Galati and most places will have cornmeal on the bottom for a nice texture and crunch. Also something about Windsor pizza is the heavy use of canned mushrooms (which has a historical context with the lack of availability of fresh back in the day) but people found out canned mushrooms hold up better against high heat needed to cook pizza versus the fresh counter part.
As an F1 fan the Template Josh use to rank the pizzas reminds me HEAVILY of F1 since they use a similar template for standings and stuff.

PEQUODS. My favorite Chicago pizza. And it’s what I think is proper deep dish, not the upside down cheese casserole that everyone gets up in arms about. The cheese and topping are above the sauce, where they belong, and they’re cooked in a deep dish pan that’s been seasoned for decades with the best caramelized cheese crust out there. (Admittedly, it might be close to Detroit style) That said, NY pizza is the shit, I’d probably go for that if i had both options readily available.
Everything you said is the right answer.
I think he was expecting a New York style pizza for every single one along with the flavour profile. I personally like the Detroit style over the New York style.
If you're judging every pizza by how closely they resemble the structure, taste, and profile of a New York style pizza then New York style will come out on top.
Pequods is my favorite deep dish 'Za but I wouldn't consider it "proper" since Burt came out with that version ages after the original Chicago deep dish in the 40s. I like Pizzeria Uno and Due for that og title.
Bro! Came here to say this. Best deep dish pizza, hands down.
All of this is the truth. I like Lou's but I get Pequod's and Burt's way more.
IMO the winner of this challenge also looked the most appetizing. I love traditional NY style pie but I do prefer the modern styles and Neapolitan.
As someone who grew up eating non thin crust pizzas... i have never liked the thin crust version of pizza anywhere. U have the ingredient flavors but the bread layer is just crispy or hard like u cut out leather from a buffalo (exaggerated..). In the end I taste overpowered flavors that dont sync with the bread/pizza dough in it.. the thick pizza dough lets the juices and flavors sink into it.

Don't do culinary school. Don't know where you're at in life or how old you are, but culinary wages don't offset the cost. You're starting off with debt you don't need. You'll learn a lot just entering the work force if you're intentional about the restaurants you're applying at and know which cuisines you want to learn first. Back of house is so volatile and pay is so poor to average that you'll move up quickly if you stay the course. If someone else is footing the bill and you don't have to pay it back, good for you -- go ahead. But I used to work as a cook and am constantly surrounded by culinary professionals who regret schooling and struggle to pay it back on a cook's wages.
Don’t go to culinary school. You will learn much more online

It seems like people can do quite well getting into internships and that kind of thing through culinary school if they knuckle down. From what I understand, many high end restaurants and patissere won't even consider someone without professional culinary training too. Fair point about the debt load, that is significant and something to be weighed up.
Seems like best of both worlds might be a bit of both, part time study and working in a kitchen alongside that. Whether that is viable I have no idea
@@micah1754 In the kitchen world, cooking school is seen as a path rich kids take, or those hoping to hop the line. Some misguided souls think they can get hired as chefs upon graduation. The skills translate, but none of the cadence or culture of the job does. You still start at the bottom of the bottom, as a prep or line cook at an inconsequential station, making pennies paying off debt. Even worse for you if you're subsidized by your parents once you're in the work force.
What I'm telling them is that they can get straight to cooking without all of that debt. 6mos at a good restaurant, starting with prep work. Then go work at a great one. Or a a world class one.

He's horrible at reviewing food, his chicken sandwich video is proof that he doesn't even know what he's doing. He got the premium chicken sandwich at every fast food restaurant, then went to McDonald's and got a McChicken... Like bro, you know good and damn well you just wanted to give McDonald's a shitty score by purposefully getting their most inferior chicken sandwich.

Arinell's in Berkeley makes a great foldable NY-style marinara pizza. Then down the street people line down the block for an unconventional different nightly pizza at the Cheeeseboard Collective
Josh, the next time you’re in Detroit, make sure to hit up Supino’s, Belle Isle Pizza, and Michigan & Trumbull. They ride on more than nostalgia (respect to Buddy’s).
"I tried the best pizzas in NYC and half assed Detroit and Chicago" should be the title of this Weiner festival
FR. I'm tired of people sucking off NYC pizza like it's the greatest food ever created. It's good, but to me, comparing different pizza styles is like comparing apples to oranges. They all have their own redeeming qualities.
I took my family in a Scott's Pizza Tour when we were in NYC. Such a great way to experience many different pizza places without all the leg work. Also did a Chicago pizza tour too. Awesome episode Josh & Scott making me want to visit NYC again just for the pizza 🍕😊.
The bus tour will get you to a borough outside Manhattan and Scott does them and he’s quite knowledgeable about NYC pizza. But the walking tours are not done by Scott and at $65 to walk to three places within relatively close proximity to eat three slices you can do it yourself and save $50. And choose the places you want too.
Yeah, we did the bus tour. 😊
scott wiener the type of guy to order overcooked pizza just to complain its too hot and not good enough while paying one dollar for it
Which borough did you go to? The bus tour used to start from Lombardi’s in SoHo and would often go up to The Bronx. Now it starts from the Seaport I think from Keste pizza but I haven’t gone since it moved and the Seaport is very inconvenient for me. I’m guessing he takes you to Brooklyn or Queens now. Statan Island has pizza too. The forgotten borough. 😀
@@frankfurter7260 I only remember we went to Lombardi, Patrizio's, and J&V. I'm not sure which part of the city those were located, it was a few years back now.
"Yoo-hoo Josh!" was so sweet
I absolutely love Chicago pizza. I’m in California, but have had a few pizzas in Chicago and they were breathtaking. I can say the same for Detroit, New York, etc. I think of it like this: I love a raised donut, and I love a cake donut. If I’m craving a cake donut, a glaze raise won’t cut it, and vice versa. So with pizza, if I’m thinking thin, crispy crust and I find a Chicago style, I’m going to be disappointed, but only in the realm of satisfying EXACTLY what I was craving; that doesn’t mean Chicago style is inferior. Sometimes a Detroit pizza is what I’m craving and any other style is still a great experience, but doesn’t scratch the itch. I tend toward a New York style (or as close as we can get in CA), but the other styles have their own well-deserved and equally undeniable carvings in the Mt. Rushmore of pizza styles.
If you do come to New Haven, Sally's, Modern, Pepe's White Clam, and BAR's mashed-potato bacon are the ones to get. People sleep on BAR pizza but bacon-mash has been becoming very popular over the past 10 years in CT.
Check out One6Three. Killer mashed potato pie there
ya the entire world knows that
When my friends and I learned that New Haven had their own style of pizza, we had to try it so took a ~9 hour road trip. We of course went to the big 3, and had room in the itinerary for one more; we had every intention of trying BAR. But after a series of inconveniences, we found ourselves back near Sally's, and had to ask ourselves the question "will we be more sad to have never tried BAR, or more sad to never have Sally's again?"
We ended up going back to Sally's, but I have to say, I do sort of feel like that was a missed opportunity.
The upshot though is that it started a tradition of annual pizza vacation, and we are on a mission to try every regional style of pizza!
I love how Josh made it look like other styles of pizza had any chance at all against NY style.

Nah I've had a lot of the pizza's he has tried and he's just wrong a lot. I knew he was not to be trusted when he gave Bocci Club in Buffalo somewhere in the 7's which is the worst score I have ever scene. I went to college in Buffalo that pizza is absolute garbage, a solid 5.1. All my friends stopped listening to him after that. Joshua is giving low ratings, but his rankings are pretty spot on here in my and my friends experience.
Dave is a fucking fraud, and that goes for everything he’s done in life.
Since pizza style is a preference and you are going to all three cities, you might as well find the best of each style. Individually, which is the best Chicago, Detroit and then New York style pizza?
Considering a NYC pizza place (Una Pizza Napoletana) took the #2 spot of the 50 best pizza places in the World (8 other spots in the 50 also go to America pizza places) as ranked by Sicilians in Naples; I'd say that pizza in American has already earned that "seat at the culinary table".
NYC pizza is simple amazing lol
Una pizza napoletana actually serves Neapolitan style pizza so I wouldn't actually count that as american pizza
The name litterally means "A neapolitan pizza"
Considering italian americans pumped up italian cuisine almost to the point of people romanticising over italian food is something not a lot of people realise and italians from Italy take it for granted.
There wouldn’t be pizza without america and hollywood.
Between nyc and new haven you can get the best pizza. It's crazy how fast it goes downhill as you go further away.
Josh was so gracious when the fan interrupted the taste of his first slice of NY pizza-so kind and generous with his time. Made my mama & teacher heart swell. His mama raised him right. ❤
It's cool that he did, but nobody owes you their time. I'm this case he was literally advertising his presence with that ridiculous car, so you could call it a public appearance, but in normal daily life, he doesn't owe anyone his time. I don't blame any celebrities who don't do fan interactions when out in the wild.

I don't ever plan on visiting NYC, but if I did, it would be for the food in Little Italy. Being of Sicilian heritage, it has a special endearment to me.

New York style pizza looks like the default character in an RPG game before you add any of the good armor or weapons. Just "Yeah here is the least amount of investment and you can fix it later."
When it comes to Chicago Pizza, you're better off with thin crust or tavern-style pizza. Places like Vito and Nick's, Palermo's, Phil's, or Gino's East are the places to try. For other styles, George's, Pequod's, Milly's, Aurelio's or Giordano's are excellent choices.

Don't waste your time. NYC pizza is hype which is showed down the throat of tourists. There is a trend of "gourmet" hipster joints that sell you decent pies at 2x the cost of what they should cost. NYC pizza is a cheap slice sold on a bus stop and should be priced as one. It's bs cheese made with restaurant Depot purchased flour. It's good when it's cheap. Try good pizza, it's at New Heaven CT. Original Pepe's hands down beats all NYC pizzerias.
@jamesdean1283 Last I checked, New Haven didn't have John's of Bleeker and Luigis. Nothing in Connecticut tops New Yorks best.
@@smileytlj23By mentioning John's shows you are quite lacking in pizza iq. It's a decent joint and is not a true NYC pizza. A cheap first date place for a nearby student on a budget that became a hyped up tourist trap. It's just ok, nothing memorable unless you are stuck in Manhattan. Louigis, rip-off. A basic slice, turned off by the freaking oven somehow made into a classic. A hipster revival bs. DiFara, sh'*t neighborhood with highly overpriced pizza...ha ha
