This year has been tough on everyone. The idea for this song just kind of popped into my head while watching the news a few weeks ago so I decided to follow the inspiration - it turned out pretty nice I think. I dedicate it to all of you who struggled or lost someone or something this year.
I hope it brings you a little comfort and I wish you all a peaceful & brighter 2021.

I broke up with my fiancé to her methamphetamine addiction, my first dog passed away she was 16 years old, I lost my job with Corvette because of covid. But I get up every day at 5 am go to work welding and working on large equipment, no matter what this year threw at me. I will still stand up, nothing can hold me down.
Standing strong when everything is falling to pieces around you... It's good to have a hero like that in these times. It gives hope that others can do the same.

I didn't realize how long the year had been till I saw this video. Because for some reason, I was convinced at this point that Kobe, the Beirut explosion, the protests in Hong Kong and Belarus and the Australian wildfire were last year but no, they were all this year. Hell, the Beirut explosion wasn't even 6 months ago yet it still feels like it was over a year ago.
Yeah, this year has truly been a dreadful slog from one bad event to another.
From the most awful wildfires in Australia and -Califirenia- California, to freak outs over potential invasive species (Murder hornets) and freak outs over potential war with Iran, to a global pandemic and shutdown, protests that turned to race riots, non related protests in Hong Kong and Belarus, the devastation in Lebanon and much much more.
It truly has been one of the worst years in living memory. Rest in hell 2020, you will not be missed
To be fair, Australian wildfires are an unfortunately annual thing. Though the 2019/2020 one was the worst.

My trial of fire is about to start again, I'm about to go work in an emergency hospital ward... New years eve is one of the busiest days of the year, the fireworks needs no explanation that there is a lot of gore, blood and the smell of powder.

This popping up for me now after 2023 is insanely fitting. In 2023 I lost my brother, a friend, 2 uncles and shed more tears than I think I have in any other year of my life. I didn't even know this song existed before, but I think I found it exactly when I needed to. Thank you Gavin. I know this wasn't made specifically for me, or for 2023 at all, but it feels right to hear it now
Seeing the bush fire footage puts it into perspective how much has gone wrong this year, I still remember the fear of having to evacuate and the weeks my coworker was out fighting the fires.

Damn this year was indeed long for me.
This was the year where i finally said no to my abusive parents and moved out.
This was the year i met my first girlfriend. Granted it only lasted a few months but ive learned alot that i'll take with me to future relationships.
This was the year i finally turned 18. What a feeling that was. In a blink of a second, i lived on my own, got my first real job, and am now working towards a drivers licence and getting my grades up for university.
This was the year where in such a short time, i had to change and develop so much as a person.
I dare say, that even though this year sucked so hard for the world, it was the most important in my life.

First of all, “dystopian.” Second of all, Deus Ex and near future sci-fi has always extrapolated on past and present problems and projected them into the future. MD was specifically aiming at the South African apartheid system with its “mechanical apartheid.” Something it caught flak for.
So calling that game prophetic is only true if one doesn’t know the past. Humanity’s problems are not new things.
The big difference is that in a cyberpunk setting, corporations producing vials of stuff and injecting people with it would be a bad thing. Today, it is the hope of things returning to normal.

It's not even close to having been 24 hours since this was uploaded. But this is already so incredibly underrated.
It feels like a love letter to those who survived this year and an Anthem to those who didn't. I can leave 2020 with a smile at least.
It has been exactly 1 year and this song still resonates.
When the clock strikes 12 tonight, there's gonna be people who want to pretend that all the lingering problems of this year have magically disappeared.
That's fine for them, more power to 'em.
But if you still need time to recuperate from events that affected you, that's fine too.

I love this.. not just because it symbolises this year. But every year. Every year of our lives. But these images awoke of the new an sudden dark times of our recent age. The lyrics could of been more precise, relating to the virus etc. But i am very glad you did not do that, As it would lose it's amazing unique touch..

I am glad as well that the lyrics don't go into only one specific direction. The video shows it, too. All the media is full of news about the virus, but many people forget about all the other things, including catastrophes, people also had to struggle with this year. Plus, like you said, it keeps the song timeless.

Just in the US alone, the majority of the population won't be vaccinated until at *least* late summer, and with the stubborn, stupid "but my freedoms!" crowd, Covid will hang on for probably a few years to come until it's finally globally eradicated like smallpox was in the 80s (and there *is* US legal precedent for *forcing* people to be vaccinated against their will, just in case push finally comes to shove). Be grateful, you could've been one of the many victims of this disease. Sure, its not as bad as many other things, but that doesn't mean its not bad. People have been sitting at home alone, and getting mental health issues, and many who've lost their own families and stuff like that. The world doesn't revolve around you and your country. You're an inhabitant of the planet first of all and not the other way round. You are human first, then you are a westerner or easterner or whatever country you live in. Your house may have been bombed, yes, and many may have died in your country, yes, but that doesn't negate the mental suffering that thousands and thousand of people have went through this year. Tell me, if someone locked you in prison wouldn't you wanna go out and see your friends? Wouldn't you wanna go visit a swimming pool or attend a party? You would feel yourself slowly descending into a dark pit of madness and despair and even the smallest of things like a party or a swimming pool starts to matter. Now imagine if I came and told you that you don't have it as bad as some other people, would that negate your disparity? Would that pull you out of that dark pit you've fallen into?
Again, mate, sure maybe you have it bad, but the world doesn't revolve around you. Stop all this Easterner and Westerner thing. You are human first, then you are the resident of the your country.

As a fellow introvert...it's kind of embarrassing how little my daily life changed after the Plague hit.
I completely forgot about that explosion. How messed up must a year be for you to forget that an explosion destroyed a sizable chunk of a city?
It's been a long few years... we all thought 2020 would be the worst of it, but then the war in Ukraine, and the strife and chaos...
I'm 20 now, I never had a senior prom because of Covid, and my college experience has been intertwined with it all... makes me think about the 1919 flu, and all the people who survived the war only to die then...
Even worse: the veterans who survived the end of the First World War in Europe...only to then bring the second strain of influenza home with them, spreading it through all of those ticker-tape parades and heroes' welcomes.

Thanks for this, Gavin. It’s not as encouraging as something like Amnesia, but it feels like there’s a light at the end of the tunnel.
Not to disparage anyone else’s horrible year, but my year was extremely long. I lost my grandma on May 31, 2020, a few weeks after her 81st birthday. Gram was more like a mother to me than my actual mother, so her death hit me really hard. June onwards was a march through literal hell. But I made it. It's been almost a year since I had evacuate due to the Aussie bushfires. I was lucky, I didn't lose my home or friends or family and could return more quickly than other areas but it could have easily gone different. Some days the smoke was so bad on some days that you're eyes would sting and every breath would be a little harder than the previous one.
Thanks for what you do Gav, your music certainly brought me welcome relief through this absolutely crap year. May the future bring better things and may these troubles fade into history.

2020 has been hard, but it also gave my girlfriend and me the most beautiful thing we ever had. And it's only six more weeks until our son has finished his first year on this planet. Everyone out there, stay strong.
