Dude!!! You actually have a real comic with your cover on it!! That’s totally awesome and you’re like meh no biggie. I’d be over the moon. That’s so cool
The one thing with the Neal Adams cover...the man at the time was 75 years old. And there's no longer any 'art director's to have guys submit layouts, maybe 2 or 3 quick sketches to pick the best composition. But here, Neal was getting up there in age. You can see he could still draw, but it's the layout. Not so much the skill, but the composition.
Yeah, alot of the time if you see a 'stinker' is the deadline rush. People fall behind, or you get sick in the middle of the deadline. Gotta' rush to make it and get your voucher in to get paid. Comic deadlines, monthly deadlines are unforgiving. An editor sometimes might've scheduled something in, etc. They don't seem to do inventory stories anymore too from what I understand? I could be wrong. Meaning a standalone commissioned story, could be out of continuity but not affect the ongoing storyline, all work paid (writer, artist, etc.) ready to go to fill in if the lead artist gets behind and can help get things back on track.
Gotta say i loved your original submission for gargoyles. I can't believe disney said women can't be in danger on the cover. That's insane as females are just as capable of being in danger as men
I met Neal Adams once and he signed my Superman 233. I heard he didn’t like the cover and I asked him why. He said the right leg is too long and now I can’t unsee it. He also said Bob Kane was an asshole. R.I.P. Neal.
That Jae Lee Savage Namor cover screams “90’s Extreme!!” But, yeah, you got to cut him some slack for being his cover. He really has come a long way and is an accomplished artist.
As Thanos said, balance is necessary for the universe to maintain order, and Frank Miller totally knew that and used the Wolverine cover to balance out how good his The Dark Knight Returns cover was.
It’s funny you bring up that Green Lantern 20, because I just red that issue not too long ago for the first time and ya that cover stood out me too! It was just so different from the other covers that I had to look twice at. But does that mean it did its job of making it more memorable than the other issues??
James, your gargoyle cover is pretty darn cool looking! Be proud of it. If those previous images you showed before it are yours, wow man! They looked like they could be some kind of dark alternate dimension. Perhaps an antihero trapped in a forbidden place that he has to escape from.
Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Universe Presents The Atom. The way he drew Superman…doesn’t look like he’s flying. It’s like he’s doing a rock ‘n roll power stance in midair. The anatomy is off and overly exaggerated.
I actually went out of my way to get a "worst" cover. It was the Frank Miller variant cover of DK The Master Race with wonder woman with the child on her back. James you mentioned it in a video of worst variant covers. So obscure and bad, it actually intrigued me to own a cover so weird, lol. As always, great video and research James!
I think a lot of the 1990s issues stem from the popularity of artists like Liefeld who were terrible with proportions. Some others might be the fault of the inkers.
James, I never liked Gargoyles the show or comic but bought 2 on claim sales and had you sign one to my son because I thought your art was great. It’s a graceful thing to do placing yourself as #1 but how did Liefeld dodge the list? Also if you’re talking codpieces, Uncanny 266 is a horror show.
No Cardy, Infantino or Steranko? Of course not! Those guys never dropped the ball. And neither did you, James! Your cover is great and powerful and very eye dancing!
Awesome video! Thanks for sharing the artist’s good work before the bad. Everyone lays an egg every now and then. Would love to hear more about how you were able to get to do a Marvel cover! Tell us more of the story!
I think you’re being hard on yourself. I really dig your cover. Plus it’s your first ever cover. Compared to the Jae Lee one you knocked it out the park lol
Have you showed off any of your art on RUclips before? This is the first I’ve seen it in one of your videos and some of those pieces were amazing. Please share some more!
That Thor cover makes Thor look like an 80s movie reject. Is that a Syracuse University hat? I lived in Syracuse for many years starting with my Recruiting Battalion assignment. Attended their IVMF course. Enjoyed a few Syracuse Orange basketball games. Even got to do our Battalion PT in their arena.
Maybe it just because im an amatour artist, but i like your Gargoyle cover that they used. It has a 90s vibe to it, with its anatomy and works because the original series is from that time. :D Btw another great Bad Covers video. I like how you try to be nuanced and point out if it was an early artwork by an artist or the style for the time. Also it is so clear you love comics. It just flows naturally from you. Dunno if that last part makes sense.
I kept looking at The Hulk on that Champions cover. And the more I looked at it, the stranger it got. You can see his entire trunk, all the way down to his waistband, then you can see like half of his back at the same time. Weird! As a sidenote, I inked for Marvel and Dark Horse for many years, and I inked several of Ramos' covers for Marvel West Coast (don't ask!). One was supposed to feature Devil Dinosaur, but all he did was draw Godzilla! Man, those things were fun!!
May be a hot take, but I absolutely despise the cover of Marvel Spotlight #5. Ghost Rider is in my top 3, but that cover completely turns me away from the comic as a whole. Steve Ditko has definitely done better work.
As a huge Jae Lee fan I even love these old Namor covers. Granted, they are nowhere near the level of artistry he eventually achieved, but you gotta start somewhere!
That Namor cover has "The Savage" added above "Namor" at the top, so I think the point was to do an off-model Namor. Also: "Disney says a woman can't be in distress on the cover"--More ridiculous social engineering from the company that has done more to damage girls' mental health than anyone.
Didn't know you were an artist...For the gargolyes cover.. .the lighting is good and it works overall. Think you are a bit hard on yourself. We are our worst critics at times. 💯👍
Much to your surprise?? Your cover would’ve been accepted regardless cause Nick Berucci watches your channel while he counts his Cover A-Z variants money 😂 😆
I won't say he's in the same class as some of the other's mentioned on the list but HOW did the Rob Liefeld 1996 Captain America #1 not make this list?????
Dude!!! You actually have a real comic with your cover on it!! That’s totally awesome and you’re like meh no biggie. I’d be over the moon. That’s so cool

But here, Neal was getting up there in age. You can see he could still draw, but it's the layout. Not so much the skill, but the composition.
Your rejected cover was great! Thanks for sharing more of your art. Also, your cover selections were spot on
Appreciate that!
Yeah, alot of the time if you see a 'stinker' is the deadline rush.
People fall behind, or you get sick in the middle of the deadline.

Just want to say that I love these types of videos, thanks for taking the time to put these lists together 😊
Gotta say i loved your original submission for gargoyles. I can't believe disney said women can't be in danger on the cover. That's insane as females are just as capable of being in danger as men
The original was so much better. I love the smoke and the layout. UGH
Also was that not the plot for the comic book? o_O
Being a teen of the 90s I have to say, we never called them ugly covers, we just call them "covers" 'cause most of them were ugly anyway.
lol - I don't even remember them as ugly or good looking
I met Neal Adams once and he signed my Superman 233. I heard he didn’t like the cover and I asked him why. He said the right leg is too long and now I can’t unsee it. He also said Bob Kane was an asshole. R.I.P. Neal.
You can put any John Cassaday cover from the past 7 years or so on this list
That Jae Lee Savage Namor cover screams “90’s Extreme!!” But, yeah, you got to cut him some slack for being his cover. He really has come a long way and is an accomplished artist.
Superrrrrrrr 90s
I LOVE that you included examples of their better covers!
You handled this subject, classy. You pointed out flaws and emphasize the strengths.
Frank Miller’s recent Wolverine cover. So bad.
lol facts
@@MintHunterComicsI bought this because it’s so ugly!!
Miller and JR JR both do a lot of trash covers now.
As Thanos said, balance is necessary for the universe to maintain order, and Frank Miller totally knew that and used the Wolverine cover to balance out how good his The Dark Knight Returns cover was.
As often as I watch your content I didn't know you produced a cover for Gargoyles
Frank Miller post 2000s
Yup...just quit now frank.
Not wrong
Post 2000s Miller could easily have 10 himself
@natl9953 the last 10 he's done could make the list 😂
@@ellenacarroll863 i may be the minority but I don't like any Frank Miller covers
Love these videos aren't just about buying and selling comics but about the joys and blunders. Keep it up dude
Appreciate that!
It’s funny you bring up that Green Lantern 20, because I just red that issue not too long ago for the first time and ya that cover stood out me too! It was just so different from the other covers that I had to look twice at.
But does that mean it did its job of making it more memorable than the other issues??
Maybe that’s what makes it memorable!
Great for you to get a published cover!
Love to see your next covers.
Thanks man, I'm hoping to do a lot more of them!
Love the dead pan delivery. You seem to have a very natural sense of humor. Also you move things along. First time viewer but definitely not the last
A horrible 1st appearance cover that pops in my mind is Avengers Annual #10 .. 1st appearance of Rogue and Madelyn Pryor. The layout is just bad!
Now do crappy artists that stumbled upon creating a masterpiece
😂
Please do a part 2 of these. You are a talented artist.
oof! That Gambit is rough...very cool that you got to do a cover though! Very exciting
I never knew you did a cover, I actually have your cover. Awesome!
Sick!
I actually went out of my way to get a "worst" cover. It was the Frank Miller variant cover of DK The Master Race with wonder woman with the child on her back. James you mentioned it in a video of worst variant covers. So obscure and bad, it actually intrigued me to own a cover so weird, lol.

I’m still hunting for this in 9.8!
@CBs_Bill_from_Montana that is what I got, took awhile to find one! Good luck hunting it down!
I think a lot of the 1990s issues stem from the popularity of artists like Liefeld who were terrible with proportions. Some others might be the fault of the inkers.
Agreed
I'm stealing that "Looks like he's been tazed in the balls" line.
Hahaha
No John Byrne? Checkout that first Wondergirl cover….
I don’t think he had any true stinkers
Wonder Woman 105. I agree, not Byrne’s finest hour.
This is such a fun topic. That Broderick cover has always disgusted me. I'm usually a fan of him too. I'd add almost any Ditko Spider-man cover.
"Meth Head Variant" FKN LOL Well done James, Well Done
If I could find that gargoyles cover in Montreal it would be added to my PC
I liked your Gargoyles cover when you announced it last year.
Proud owner of a Gargoyles #5 signed by the artist himself 🎨 😂😂🔥
No Cardy, Infantino or Steranko? Of course not! Those guys never dropped the ball. And neither did you, James! Your cover is great and powerful and very eye dancing!
great video. i actually picked up a few copies of your Gargoyles cover.
I’m so sorry. But thank you. I will do better I promise
great video glad to see you growing the channel
I remember your video of ugly covers. Good thing you didn't go out and buy all of these only to be stuck trying to move them at your claim sale.
Romita jr has a huge list.
I like his simpler style!
Your first cover is good. I would have picked that up
Your cover is awesome! Cheers 🍻
loved your first gargoyles cover the dr and lady was great
Broderick's GL cover is so bad it's hilarious. I love Kilowog's face!
Awesome video! Thanks for sharing the artist’s good work before the bad. Everyone lays an egg every now and then. Would love to hear more about how you were able to get to do a Marvel cover! Tell us more of the story!
Glad you liked it! Maybe in a future vid!
Very cool to see your art!
I need one of your Gargoyles cover man. Thats still awesome to get published
I got a few left!
@ im gonna need one in the next pile i have for sure 👍🏻
I think you’re being hard on yourself. I really dig your cover. Plus it’s your first ever cover. Compared to the Jae Lee one you knocked it out the park lol
I'm thinking I might pan out to collect some of these bad covers since no one else is
Hey why not!
That Thor cover is a perfect fit for any Manowar album :P
I also need that GL 20 in a 9.8. Great video!
Big Broderick fan, got that GL 20 and kept checking, “did Pat do this?”
I think Ditko cover on 1st Kraven appearance is a stinker
I like your first cover. Hopefully you do more in the future!
Love you show. Keep it up
Have you showed off any of your art on RUclips before? This is the first I’ve seen it in one of your videos and some of those pieces were amazing. Please share some more!

That recent Miller Wolverine
YEP

The late great John Cassaday's X-Force #50 cover
Didn’t know that one!
Wow! 90s art!
That Gambit cover reminds me of Stuart from the Big Bang Theory.
Lol
Man, that Balent Catwoman cover is haunting
Unfortunately John Cassidy’s recent X-men cover was lambasted everywhere.
That thing is comedy gold
Nice artwork on your own cover
That’s awesome you drew a covet
I kept looking at The Hulk on that Champions cover. And the more I looked at it, the stranger it got. I suspect deadlines may have something to do with it
I'm sure they did
I've always wanted that King Shark statue. How much you get it for?
Super cool! Now I’m hunting your Gargoyles cover!
May be a hot take, but I absolutely despise the cover of Marvel Spotlight #5. Ghost Rider is in my top 3, but that cover completely turns me away from the comic as a whole. Steve Ditko has definitely done better work.
That is a hot take!
You missed recent Frank Miller
As a huge Jae Lee fan I even love these old Namor covers. Granted, they are nowhere near the level of artistry he eventually achieved, but you gotta start somewhere!
Adams work was hard to like for the last Approx. decade. Otherwise amazing. Frank Miller has fallen even farther and his current stuff is just sad.
Gambit's weakness is folding sheets.
That Neal Adams cover is something else lol but legendary artist still.
I like both of your images you showed. The rejected one & the one they went with. I wish I could draw, but I'm better at writing.
If I take my glasses off, your Gargoyles cover somewhat resembles the one by Lucio Parrillo!
Gargoyles 5 will now show up on Key Collector's Trending 20...
Good list. I did not know any of these😮
That’s how it goes sometimes - even the greats miss the mark sometimes!
That Namor cover has "The Savage" added above "Namor" at the top, so I think the point was to do an off-model Namor. Also: "Disney says a woman can't be in distress on the cover"--More ridiculous social engineering from the company that has done more to damage girls' mental health than anyone.
I noticed an issue of either Batman or Detective Comics with a variant cover by the wonderful Michael Golden. It was rubbish, I hope he’s okay! 😼
Didn't know you were an artist...For the gargolyes cover.. .the lighting is good and it works overall. Think you are a bit hard on yourself. We are our worst critics at times. 💯👍
I am. While I appreciate the compliment I realllyyyyy don’t like that cover. I think it’s a stink show lol
George Perez’s cover to Superman #1 from the New 52. Check out the hands. They look weird.
Mint how bout a video of best artist for each character
Youre a published artist. Pretty Cool!
Much to your surprise?? Your cover would’ve been accepted regardless cause Nick Berucci watches your channel while he counts his Cover A-Z variants money 😂 😆
Awesome idea for a video!
Glad you like it!
Thanks for giving us a treat on this one 😄😄😄😄
Happy to do it! 😊
Solid list 👏🏼 Last entry isn’t warranted tho 👊🏼
Fun video!
Who is your favorite artist of all time and which book?
I won't say he's in the same class as some of the other's mentioned on the list but HOW did the Rob Liefeld 1996 Captain America #1 not make this list?????
Did not know you were an artist.
Yep!
I was going to point out Frank Miller as source for these but it starting to feel like beating a dead horse
I thought Berni Wrightson drew the cover to Batman 241.
I did wonder where Frank Miller was. Crazy just how poor some of his covers have been.😅
His new covers are so rough that I sort of love them haha
@@MintHunterComicsI agree!!
That Gambit looks like the actor Ewen Bremmer. The actor that played the sniper in Wonder Woman.
lol
I LOVE King Kirby.
But no way it's a terrible cover. Just a 'meh' cover.
It's rough!!!
