I lost Sam too on my first playthrough, but for me we were just besties while Sarah was my wife. But hearing Cora yell "I hate you" was really hurtful still.
I've been waiting for this one! You handled it better than I thought you would, actually. The first time I played this quest, I was so devastated to lose Sarah that I re-loaded an earlier save, and honestly, I kind of regret doing that. I think it would have felt more genuine to play it out like it happened, rather than change history. Plus, I think that something that happens in a later quest would have been much more impactful if I had.
having married her, my guy threw himself into exploring and not going to the wake. jumped into NG to find out what it was and was happy to move on to another NG+1.
When Vladimir asks for repairs at the Eye the die is cast. The game separates the two NPCs with most affinity to you between the two locations. One of them will die whatever you do. In my first playthrough it was also Sam. Leaving Cora without a father was a hard blow and I took a day's break from the game before attending the memorial service. Loss is loss and I think this will be difficult for those who have lost someone in real life. Loss gets compounded and a lot of previous emotions can emerge. Dealing with death is a part of life and in the end we all have to carry on. This game teaches some hard lessons, but it is just a game.
Honestly, you took this A LOT better than I did. When i lost Sam and Cora told me she hated me...man tears...so many man tears 😂. But this honestly made the game so much better to me since i now had a personal take in all of this: vengeance
Having played through this mission, I knew what was going to happen and was wondering how it would play out for you. The timing couldn't been worse for you at all. I was like aww she finally got together with Sam, and then you had the tiff immediately. Then I realized what your next quest was. I was thinking it will be OK, she will rush to save Sam in The Eye. Then I saw you stay back and defend the Lodge and then it became like watching a train wreck in slow motion. Keep heart, if you play New Game + you can change your decisions and keep Sam or anyone else alive. BTW, I would recommend at least starting a New Game +. I think it is the best, and most interesting NG+ I have ever seen.
The game puts the 2 companions that you spend the most time with in the balance for you to choose one, so my advice would be choose the least one you like and develop your relationship with them to the friends level so you sacrifice them for the one you love, as one must die , the spot you must go back to is the point before the going to fix the eye mission , and a a small but good spoiler, you can save all and no one would die in the NG+ later , but not the first run unfortunately
Oh.. Miranda. I, too, thought about you running into this scenario the first time I played it. Although, for me, it was Barrett. It's going to be OK. From a story point of view, I think it's Sam more often than not because of consequences later on. Drink heavily, pour one out for Sam, and journey onwards. You have some great events coming up, and we all look forward to watching your journey. You have a kind and beautiful heart. It's sad to see it hurt so.
Well that was one massive 180 for Sam, at one moment he praised Miranda to high heaven, the next critisising the actions taken during the Crimson Fleat. I heard relationships were tough, but never knew how sudden things could change. haha
Yeah, killing the person you care about the most was always the plan, but they did give you the option to go to The Eye and attempt to save everyone. You just made the other choice. My love interest was Sarah, but it honestly worked out because I didn't really like her that much after awhile and wanted to be with Andreja more anyway lol. Keep playing the main story. You'll really like it.
Whoever you're closest to stays on the Eye, if you go there straight away they live, and someone in the Lodge dies. I was married to Sarah, and she died on the eye when I did exactly what you did. I considered going back in the saves, but honestly the story feels more impactful if you don't.
Sorry, but the game just puts your beloved one in danger. What killed Sam was _your_ decision to stay at the Lodge instead of hurrying to the Eye. You're welcome :)
Ahhhhh man, rough go Miranda. I think I must have been about 100 hours in, and You can bet your life the moment Sal said my Andreja was injured on the Eye, i dropped everything and Grav-jumped there to rescue her lol. But well done to the writers, I never expected to get sucker-punched coming back to the lodge to find (no spoilers i guess) my OTHER best friend murdered on the floor. Hit me good. Beth games don't usually succeed at this sort of thing so it's refreshing to see tbh! Not as intense as cyberpunk's but it's sure miles ahead of the characters in say, Skyrim or Fallout 4 haha. Hope you've since found the resolve to carry on with the game, don't worry, it's worth it.
Miranda, I hope you made a save before playing Paying the High Price mission. If you did, you can still change the fate for Sam. 1:05:18 - the game forces you to choose between the 2 companions that your character is closest with. Okay, does anyone else hear in their heads after the Scow incident, Captain Petrov talking to another captain, "I don't know what you heard, but, I still have plenty of salvage. The pirates were only after one thing... a chunk of metal."

That was a really sad line of events 😞 At least I got to travel a little more with my husband Sam, before he died. But still, I was seriously considering loading an older save. I didn't though.
When you said that you have a suspicion that the game would kill the character that you were closest to, you're more right than you think. Its a choice between the two closest. One in the lodge and the other in the eye, you'll save the one that you go to. One always dies, you can only save everyone in ng+.
Sara died on my first play through and Barret was sent with me to get the artifact from the collector and I saw dating Ajia. There are a few out comes depending on choices.
1:10:34....My First Round of this game , It was Barrett that was killed.. 2nd round it was Sarah Morgan... This is the first time , I've seen Sam , Kick the bucket in the game.

SPOILER: For what it's worth, you could have saved Sam. As for the big argument and being disliked, if only you had not supported the Crimson Fleet ... is this Karma for your evil actions? As to how this is coded within the game - The two NPCs with the highest affinity rating are selected for this story line. One goes to the eye; one goes to the lodge. There are 3 possible outcomes. Two result in the death of one of the NPCs, while the 3rd option (only available in NG+) lets everyone live. Now that you know what happens, on a first playthrough what you could do is go back to an earlier save, raise up the affinity of whichever NPC you dislike the most, and then let them die. Yeah, that mission really sucks. It is indeed whomever you're closest to dies on The Eye if you stay at the Lodge, but if you go, then the second closest person to you stays at the Lodge and dies (would have been Sarah for you). I was romancing Andreja and she was the one who died. And a bit of a spoiler here, but one I think you should be prepared for: There's a memorial mission for the one who died coming up next (after waiting five in-game days). I don't know what happens if you don't attend, I assume other Constellation members will be upset, but attending is pretty rough. I will say, there is still a lot to experience in the main questline, so don't give up.
Those faction quest are not completely over yet. i just found out that if your do a full mission board in your Ryujin office you will get a new mission from the CEO herself. Same with the Freestar Ranger quest line if you do enough of the mission board missions you will get a new mission of sorts from a contact not a board.
I had just married Sarah a bit before continuing the main quest and she died on the eye. I thought doing what she would do would be the best course of action and stayed at the Lodge. It may just be a game, but I’m not gonna lie, I was not ok for a few days after! I kind of went AWOL for a bit out of anger, but I accepted it and moved on! Amazing how even just a game can hit you in the feels.
Someone did research on this and it turns out the two people with whom you have the most affinity with, are the two people who you’re choosing between. Had you gone to The Eye, Samuel would have been saved but at the expense of your next highest affinity companion. It’s a lose-lose really. I also echo what someone else said about not going back to an older save. Not that I think you would have done anyway.
Don't go back. There were 2 paths, different but similar. You chose 1 and not the other. Even if Sam survives, he will still be hurt by your actions with The Fleet. He is, at his heart, a man of Law and Justice. You, with your pirating ways, simply are not meant for such lawful and good people that make up Constellation. There are people of the Fleet that may follow you. There are places in every major city where potential Crew may be found. "Tis better to have Loved and Lost, than not to have Loved at all."
I had the same problem my first run. But, I could not stand to see little Cora hate me.. in my case I had to turn back the clock. I lost Barret instead on the 2nd run but anyway I hate (with all manner of hate) that Bethesda put this very dark, darkness in an otherwise beautiful game. I now miss Barret's quips so much. But I still get to see Sam and Cora interact and listening to them makes me smile :)
Honestly i was shocked at the decision to hold at the lodge haha. But i suppose it's a perfectly reasonable decision, kudos to bethesda for taking the kid gloves off though. I was expecting to be able to fly over and save the others with no issue the first time i did it haha.
@@Musabreafter many years of Wanda content I’ve learnt to expect the unexpected so I wasn’t massively surprised she held at the lodge which is why I was looking forward to this episode so much. For me though as soon as the game said stay or go to the eye I started yelling to my screen “peace out Constellation, have fun with the artifacts, Sarah (my space wife) needs me” lolol
@@spud371 hahaaaa, legit 😄. The whole 'terrorist attack' style get-away through the well was pretty damn cool. I had no idea if i was helping trying to slow down the hunter or not, was so chaotic. And sarah bought it on my run as i went to save andreja, and id already married sarah in my 1st game (didnt get far with that one tho), and was generally very fond of her being around, especially on my crew, it made me sad 😆 .
@@Musabre Taking the kid gloves off would be that going to the Eye means almost everyone at the Lodge dies AND you permanently lose the artifacts and get a "Constellation's mission to collect the Artifacts has failed, but you can keep playing if you want" pop-up message. I miss Morrowind sometimes. It did not coddle you when you fucked up.
@@Tantalus010 No that's taking the kid gloves off, kicking you out into the cold and locking the door behind you lol. That needs a more extreme phrase to describe it haha.
As I understand it, somebody has to die on this one, and it must be either Sam, Sarah, Andreja, or Barrett. Furthermore, 1: Whichever location you do NOT defend, that's where somebody dies, and 2: It will always be the one at that location with whom you had the closest relationship. Apparently, the game wants it to hurt.
The Crimson fleet has missioin boards too but since i went the good route and helped sysdef i don't think i have acess to those boards anymore. I can always go back to the Key and see if they have any. I just Hijacked my 1st starborn ship today. Not mucdh cargo space and not mods. but it really brings up different dialog with people and the systems when you enter them.
So technically it's actually about who you choose or who you would've chosen, it's not about the attachment you grow with a certain character, which I think means if you didn't choose to help Sam or didn't tell Vlad that Sam was having a problem fixing the Eye, if I'm wrong sorry in advance, but also you won't have to worry about Sam's death once you complete the main quest cause it's basically temporary, Spoiler Alert: SUPER sorry in advance to those who haven't gotten that far once you become Starborn and the whole game becomes even cooler and I will say no more "Mums" the word!! 🤐😊😊😁😎❤❤👍👍
I started playing and I’m so frustrated with it. I’m not sure if I skipped over things I should have started with or what, but I’m stuck with certain missions that aren’t very far into it.. definitely a big learning curve with it for sure
Yeah be patient and keep going, Bethesda games have tons of mechanics and systems and a lot of times barely put any tutorials for them, don't hesitate to watch tutorials on RUclips if you are too lost, but in any case, the first 10 hours like can be slow and complicated.
I had just married Sam when this happened. NGL I loaded an earlier save before getting those last two artifacts to continue. The game makes you choose from your two best liked companions.
So it is supposed to be based off friendship level. So the 2 highest relationships are the ones you have a chance of losing. In this case either Sarah or Sam. Although it could have been Andreja or Barret as well. So not to rub salt in the wound but you did pick between Sam or Sarah there even if at the time you didn't know it. I lost sarah But I was playing mine primarily solo minus the missions you have a guaranteed companion. Luckily I picked Sam. As between Sam or Sarah I would pick Sam over Sarah.
Big decision about the Starborn attack. You have to choose between your 2 favorite companions. (based on time spent with them) If you leave before the Starborn shows up, Sam lives, (or whoever Vlad mentions in the call) but the one that stays at The Lodge dies. (probably Sarah in your case) When I played it, Sarah was on the station and Barret was at the lodge and I always found Barret to be annoying so when he started thanking me for choosing him I figured out what he meant then reloaded the save and chose to save Sarah instead. Was much happier with that timeline. edit: Whoops. Posted this before you asked us not to tell you this exact thing.
Yeah i was half way through my comment when i realised this might be a spoiler or add unneccessary meta-knowledge. You CAN still edit your comment btw :P
@@Musabre So you were worried that it would be too extreme a spoiler to confirm something that she commented on being able to do at the end of her video? Like there was some giant discovery to be made by reloading an old save and I've taken that away from her by confirming her suspicion? lol. Whether she chooses to change the past or not will be up to her, but confirming that it's possible is less of a spoiler than Bethesda gave when they said it started in a mine.
I'd just married Sam before this happened and was positively devastated! And after a long walk around New Atlantis after the funeral, you bet I save scummed the crap out of it, zero shame!
I re did it and went back to a previous save cause Sarah died at the Eye, my mistake was staying at the Lodge. With the redo I went to the Eye, and Sam died at the Lodge. I realized I wouldn’t be happy with either result 😢 BTW Sarah was my active most used Companion and was hoping Barrett could be the victim, but it was Sam, my 3rd most used companion who dies at the Lodge.
I'm going to go back and try to get it to be Andreja (because her accent is annoying to me and her Varuun stuff) Or Barrett because he is one of the oldest, and therefore lived the most life.
What an emotional train wreck! I’ve been dreading this episode for so long lol I didn’t understand that I could leave the first time and I was not going to lose my wife Andreja and get stuck with Sarah so I had to go back and never felt bad about it.
@@garrisonn8781better yet choose a companion you least like and start end some time with then they will be the one to lose , that is if Sara wasn’t the least you like in the first place 😂😂
She apologizes for the chaos at the beginning, like thats not what we're here for. She wouldn't be our favorite creator if she acted any differently. Sorry about Sam but my boy Jin said he misses you and will take you back..😂😂😂
My first play through I lost Sarah. My next play through I lost Barrett. My next play through Sam will have to be sacrificed. Andraja can also die. It’s whomever you’re closest with who will be killed by the hunter.
Whats the trigger the determines if Sarah or Sam dies? I cant remember what companion i hade active when i did this but in my game Sarah ended up dying. The only thing i can think off is that i hade completed the romance path with Sarah and not Sam. But i turned down the relationship option with Sarah so we remained friends as i wanted Andreja.
Starfield puts you a terrible situation in this quest, I was dating Sarah at the time and I also chose to fight at the Loge and lost her but I cheated and turned back time with a earlier save and I didnt care at all that I did!! Just do what you feel you need to do and dont care about anything else.
I had feels like you had feels when the thing happened. It was almost as bad as the thing on the evil path with the little girl and the wookie in KOTR or KOTR2, can't remember which. That was like 20 years ago or something and I still wish I'd have just stuck with the light side, heh. But yeah, I did not enjoy the way that played out. Chin up? :)
You should add SPOILER to this title. I buzzed through this and got spoiled a little. But not completely. Just did this last night. The game creates a sense of urgency with staying to protect and also if you wait just a few seconds they attack Walter and you are stuck there. But when I heard Sarah was bleeding out at the eye I went to her and amazingly I saved her. But I think I'm going to reload so I can lose a different companion or at least see their story before this part. Still I hear New Game + is different depending on who passed so that can be interesting. Worth many playthroughs. One of the under-mentioned things that make Bethesda games great is the ability to save anywhere. I couldn't play Fallout 76 because of its weird system and many modern games are the same where you don't get a hard save.
the thing about spoilers for lets play videos is the whole thing is technically a spoiler. we are playing the game, playing the story, etc... it's kinda up to the viewer with watching playthroughs. if this was a review video, i would agree with having a spoiler tag or title.
@@TheMirandalorian yeah, understood, my bad. I'll watch your final two videos after I finish the main quest. BTW, number 22 isn't in the starfield playlist.
Hi I could give you so many spoilers that would make this clear, but I can't. But plus don't stop playing. All will be clear in the end. When Sam died it was a wtf moment For me also. Finish the game. You have to. There will be so many unanswered questions if you don't.
I don't know about you guys... But I may or may not have seen anything and wouldn't say nothing about Sam being here next episode, talking still like he always does and definitely not coughing up blood...
If you advanced the main quest more before you develop a relationship it seems to go between two other main characters. Where you stay is protected. The other character... Game over man. If it helps that was the most dramatic outcome I've seen so far.
Seems like its always Sarah since you are forced to spend some time with her before going solo. I'm on a good playthrough so I've been hanging out with all of them, but this came up quick, I had only finished Sarahs companion quest.
I lost Sam too on my first playthrough, but for me we were just besties while Sarah was my wife. But hearing Cora yell "I hate you" was really hurtful still.
When I lost Sarah, it was really sad too. Amazing how we can get attached to a companion in a game. Definitely caught off guard with this episode.

10:26 an uneaten sandwich!!! 🙌🏼🙌🏼
Never had Sam as a Companion except when they required you to. Then Sam died, So I never had this story line. Looked like fun 😊
After the past few episodes of you getting closer to Sam my sadistic side has been looking forward to this main mission
And sarah bought it on my run as i went to save andreja, and id already married sarah in my 1st game (didnt get far with that one tho), and was generally very fond of her being around, especially on my crew, it made me sad
😆 .
Do you see? Do you see where Breaking Bad gets you??
The Crimson fleet has missioin boards too but since i went the good route and helped sysdef i don't think i have acess to those boards anymore. I can always go back to the Key and see if they have any. I just Hijacked my 1st starborn ship today. Not mucdh cargo space and not mods. but it really brings up different dialog with people and the systems when you enter them.
9:55 they a lil exaggerated the blood scene too much 😂
So technically it's actually about who you choose or who you would've chosen, it's not about the attachment you grow with a certain character, which I think means if you didn't choose to help Sam or didn't tell Vlad that Sam was having a problem fixing the Eye, if I'm wrong sorry in advance, but also you won't have to worry about Sam's death once you complete the main quest cause it's basically temporary, Spoiler Alert: SUPER sorry in advance to those who haven't gotten that far once you become Starborn and the whole game becomes even cooler and I will say no more "Mums" the word!!
So making up with his ex, a love confession, a fight, and then Sam DIES????? WHO’S WRITING THIS KDRAMA?! Omg the timing
When I did this I went to the Eye and saved Sarah. When we got back to the lodge I found Sam had taken a fatal hit and dies.
I had just married Sam when this happened. NGL I loaded an earlier save before getting those last two artifacts to continue. The game makes you choose from your two best liked companions.
oh you should have gone to the eye, but the good thing is that in new game plus you’ll get to see him again
Love seeing your smile pretty eyes. Your doing great in Starfield
(based on time spent with them)
If you leave before the Starborn shows up, Sam lives, (or whoever Vlad mentions in the call) but the one that stays at The Lodge dies. (probably Sarah in your case)
When I played it, Sarah was on the station and Barret was at the lodge and I always found Barret to be annoying so when he started thanking me for choosing him I figured out what he meant then reloaded the save and chose to save Sarah instead. Was much happier with that timeline.
edit:
Whoops.
@@the_omg3242 Nope. Just what i said in my comment, nothing more. No need to put words in my mouth.
I'd just married Sam before this happened and was positively devastated! And after a long walk around New Atlantis after the funeral, you bet I save scummed the crap out of it, zero shame!
Dont' worry you''ll see him again.
And yeh if you would have left you could have saved Sam but Sarah would have died at the lodge.
Sorry about Sam but my boy Jin said he misses you and will take you back..😂😂😂
OK Miranda, I would be perfectly fine with reloading a save now and go back before the Hunter, I really wanted to see your wedding with Sam.
It doesn't have to be Sam, I saw another playthrough where Barrett dies instead. I think it takes away whomever you bring with you to do repairs.
My first play through I lost Sarah. My next play through I lost Barrett. My next play through Sam will have to be sacrificed. Andraja can also die. It’s whomever you’re closest with who will be killed by the hunter.
Oh no I was really hoping you would have gone to up to the eye. That makes me sad.
I keep affinity at zero for all companions so if I lose one it's like well... bye.
No pain?? No pain!! 🙂
Hopefully there's a new episode soon. Whatever you decide to do will be entertaining.
Oh this part, heard about it, didn`t know it would happen now.
hi Miranda hope your having a great weekend I'm felling a bit low this hopefully this is going to get me in a better mood u don't dissapoint ❤x
Chin up? :)
Hi Miranda hope you are having an great and awesome weekend ❤
I agree that you should not load an earlier save, go with the game and your choices. Quite the twist inn the tale though.
This is why I have Quicksaves...
Why I can't find this game on ps5?
You broke your promise to Lillian...
I laught a lot on last episode lol
Hi
I could give you so many spoilers that would make this clear, but I can't. But plus don't stop playing.
All will be clear in the end.
When Sam died it was a wtf moment
For me also. Finish the game. You have to. There will be so many unanswered questions if you don't.
Barrett actually died in my playthrough
nope from what i've heard there would of been a death either way. if you went ot he eye you would of lost someone at the lodge. and vis versa.
SAM NOOOOOOOO!!! This is the worst timeline 😭😭😭😭😭
Let's go!
It would have lived if you had immediately gone to the Eye.
The game kills the companion you have the strongest affinity for.
I don't know about you guys... But I may or may not have seen anything and wouldn't say nothing about Sam being here next episode, talking still like he always does and definitely not coughing up blood...
you can go back and just leave the lodge and you will save sam and the whole team lives well someone dies at the lodge but not sam
Omg I shouldn’t have read the comments first now I don’t know if I can bear to watch this! 😭
use your save
So as i understand this, if you save Sam and the Eye crew, everyone at the Lodge would have died. Shit choices. Sorry it was so upsetting.
Only 1 would die, the one with the second highest affinity. Probably Sarah
Yeah. I realized that after i posted...still in shock, i guess.
@@tomm1109 it was Barrett for me. I had finished his quest line. Then he was deleted.
I married Sarah and they killed Barrett so depends where you go
