How to set up LFO’s in Cubase | Q&A with Greg Ondo

  • Low frequency oscillation (LFO) is frequently used to rhythmically modulate or alter sound to make it more interesting. In this video Greg demonstrates how to quickly set up LFOs, using the automation in Cubase, to produce effects such as changing filters and cut off, as well as using it for plug-ins that do not respond to MIDI CC messages.
We hope you find this video entertaining and useful. If you like what you see, please leave a comment and tell us what you think. Thank you.

Steinberg should make this dead simple, just like in ableton. Make and LFO vst plugin, that can connect with other plugins in the chain.

Hello Cubase it's 2023 now. It's already past due! They really should improve these types of workflow stuff. I'll probably stick to Version 12 till they fix it. And Auto LFO is always synced to bpmand only goes to 1/16 note. Not very handy if you wanna smoothly wanna automate the lfo though.

I really appreciate Greg! And I'm a certified Steinberg trainer myself for the last 10 years. Yet, this video just proves hard far behind cubase is...things that should be so simple are so cumbersome to the point of being not usable. This video uses such ridiculously cumbersome workarounds....please wake up Steinberg, your losing it.

  • @brkpsytrance1376

This an awesome, yet old (Cubase SX I think), and cumbersome feature. Specially because this MIDI LFO is limited by 128 steps from MIDI resolution VS the "full" resolution of an automation based LFO, like the one on Ableton Live with Max4Live. This means that everything you modulate will have a "steppy" quality to it. Please, catch up with everyone else.

  • @gerhardbinkele3753

1:25 You don't need this MIDI-CONTROL-effect first. Choose directly the AutoLFO and select an unused controller there. Then right-click for example on Cut-Off in Retrologue and choose LEARN CC. Afterwards press play. And there you have it !
In general I think is this to complicated and limited! A good idea for an update in Cubase Pro10 !!!
BITWIG, ABLETON, WAVEFORM 9 - and others: they all can do this with 2-3 clicks.

It's a three-click operation in Reaper, and one-click in Bitwig, Live, and FL Studio. In each of them, you merely select any arbitrary parameter in the plug-in's parameter list, right-click and assign an LFO or any modulator to it. The "16-click and install 3rd party software" solution by Steinberg is fairly ridiculous by comparison.

    • @pwiksell8772

Yes, and you can't save the loopback with the project, nor give the project to anyone else, without them also having the same kind of loopback. I work cross-platform, and features like this are just unusable because they're not portable. Hopefully a Cubase 10 internal implementation.

I love Cubase but other DAWs offer proper system-wide LFO features and not a workaround/afterthought. To call this easy (especially in the case of implementing external MIDI and General Remote) is kinda ridiculous... A very simple solution would be to add an LFO plugin that targets all the channel's automation-enabled controls (just like Quick Control), or at least have an LFO that targets the Quick Control.

Hey Greg, you could skip MIDI Control as an insert in the first part of your video. Just add AUTO LFO on your midi track, activate Midi Learn on the Cutoff in Retrologue and Midi Learn will connect to the correct Midi CC set in Auto LFO (since its sending continuous control messages anyway)...

I use LFOs a lot for sound design within Kontakt, so I appreciate the tip. I do wish that the approach for plugins that don't support midi-learn was more straight-forward. I'd rather see that added to future versions of Cubase than a lot of the interface revisions and other features that have been added in the past. It's pretty rare that I'm compelled enough by a new feature to upgrade. The last time I upgraded was because drag and drop functionality was added to mediabay (for dragging samples to plugins like Kontakt).

  • @snookofficial7211

I've been feature requesting LFO tracks in Cubase for ages and every time a new version comes out I'm disappointed with features that I'll likely not use, or plugins that I don't need!
It's cool that you can do this but it's not user friendly. A dedicated LFO track that you can assign multiple parameters to from any plugin would be awesome, especially if it had an easy to use interface with MSEG window for drawing in LFO shapes.
I feel like Steinberg love making new plugins, making interface tweaks and modifying existing systems but recently they've been a bit slack at coming up with anything new.
i.e in previous versions we had the introduction of chord tracks, vari audio, sampler track, render in place, all of these were great, but it seems there's been nothing ground breaking added since. An LFO track could be that thing, just wished they would listen.

I've been a cubase user for 20 years and I don't understand why it's all so complicated, the midi plugins are like they were 15 years ago and with the LFO effect, how awkward. Am so jealous of ableton user so many functions made so easy. This Lfo function for electronic music is so important to control effect or plugin with Lfo. I really don't understand why it is made so complicated. A lot of daws go much faster with time, cubase doesn't look at the new generation of users. I see a lot of electronic music tutorials, very rarely that anyone uses cubase. But I still find it difficult to switch, I always hope that everything will be better with the next big update.

This many steps to assign an LFO to a filter position is frankly laughable compared to the ease in DAWs like ableton and bitwig's ability to just assign the same LFO to other parameters , then flip polarity and depth if needed , Steinberg if you don't address this in Cubase 11 I may have to switch , Cubase is fantastic but it's still missing creative modulation routing capabilities

There's an problem with this solution: The Generic Remote Definitions are project-independent.
When opening a different project the mappings in the lower part of the window (the targets) are mapped to other parameters of other FX in other channels.
