PERIPHERY - Mile Zero

- This song started out as a very short soundclick demo. I had actually written all the parts that are in the demo in a Guitar Center whilst trying out the new Mesa Mark V which had just arrived, and sometimes you just get inspired by good sounding gear. The part I demoed ended up being the middle section of the song, and I remember being very intrigued by Mark's phrasing and style and was definitely letting that influence me (even though he wasn't in the band yet). This sat as a very short demo for a while because I just didn't have any other ideas for the song, and didn't want to force it. But when Mark joined up, I knew he and I would have to complete this since he was an influence on the writing. The first riff of the song was something that he had been jamming on for a while, and it is the perfect example of how a simple riff can be just as moving and powerful as a complex one if written just right. We started recording his ideas, and as I was writing riffs to add to his, I realized that my original Mile Zero ideas fit perfectly and fluidly moved the arrangement along. Before we knew it we had a complete song, and at that point Spencer started to demo some vocal ideas for the complete arrangement. When we heard his demos we knew that this song had to be on the album. It has a very different vibe from the other songs, and the arrangement is a lot more progressive than the beginning of the song might leave the listener to believe making it a pleasant surprise in my opinion. The finishing touch was Wes Hauch's solo. Wes is one of our best friends, and we have always told people that he is the best guitarist that people don't know about yet, we wanted show people why we believe that, and his solo is definitely one of my favorite moments of the album. Again we gave him no direction and just told him to do his thing, and he just went to town on that section. An interesting to note about the section that he solos over is that it is technically the beginning riff of the song, but with the downbeat in a different place. Before we ever recorded this song, Mark would jam on the riff, and that was where I heard the downbeat on the riff, but when we recorded it and Mark was playing it to a click, i realized the downbeat was in a completely different place, giving the riff a much groovier and swingy feel. We decided to have it go Mark's way first and mine second (which ended up being the solo section after the fact) and the intro riff is purposely introduced in a way that makes it a bit unclear as to where the actual downbeat is. Fun times! - Misha
I had written a couple really simple, fluffy riff ideas - the first 2 riffs in the song - they had sort of a Devin Townsend vibe to them and we tried to see if we could make them work with any of our pre-existing song ideas. They ended up being the same tempo as the original "Mile Zero" riffs that Misha had written beforehand, and we succeeded in connecting those ideas in a natural way. It's a really different Periphery song but I love how light and optimistic it sounds coming near the end of such a dense album. I remember us arranging it late at night and not even really intending it to be for the new album, it just happened that we all liked it and felt the album could use one more song. It also has probably my favorite solo on the album, with Wes Hauch being the perpetrator. His guitar playing makes me want to jump off a bridge. - Mark

The metal screaming of "I WILL MISS YOU MY FRIEND" are just so touching like letting out all your sorrow and grief
I love it, Mile zero has less complex meaning compared to the overarching storyline of Alpha and Omega. And yet this song is just as powerful simply because the passing of a friend is something that hits so close for so many people.
My friend died yesterday. 32 years too young. Goodbye my friend George. May your soul have Godspeed back to your home in the sky. Love you and we will meet again
May you meet geogre again
Sending love George ❤ (also team humanity is truely beautiful)
Gasssss
I sobbed hysterically the first like ten times I heard this song, makes me think about my ex who committed suicide. Right in the feels. Thank all of you for existing and bringing this beautiful noise into the world.
Bro what the hell !!!!
My ex committed suicide too
She was the person I thought when I listen to this song, even though our relationship turned into a disaster, I still love her and would have enjoyed a friendship. After we broke I never saw her again.
I found out 3 year from the time she had committed suicide which left in limbo mentally
fuuuuck. I wish both of you the fucking best!!!
I listened to this on repeat after my brother did the same.
Love you guys
hey friend hope you're doing well
“And it hurts just to know that you’re not coming back again” ….always gets me.
Why aren't more people talking about how powerful these lyrics are?
That said, this is everything I could ever want out of a song.
so painful, so perfect, almost crying
it really is sad
right I feel like periphery is what I have been looking for sonically. they provide all the things im looking for in a band
i just relistened to this whole album and wow the lyrics on the whole album are afuckingmazing
@@Aozora333 I
After at least 3 hours of listening to this album front to back, my mind is absolutely blown.
This song really tied it all together for me. I really loved the back stories the band wrote in the about section for each song and I think Mark explained it perfectly on this one.
It's hard to explain but after listening to this song, which is one of my favorites from the album, I feel like I've evolved or something. I can't say I've ever felt this way after listening to an album and I've listened to A LOT of music. I've been a fan of the band since the beginning and I've always been very impressed but this album took it to another level. These guys are very special musicians. This is the stuff of legends.
Even though some of the songs didn't move me emotionally, somehow I felt very motivated to continue listening. This album demanded my attention and even when it left me confused, overwhelmed, and uncomfortable I still was drawn in like a magnet and now I feel enlightened, humbled and peaceful.
The last few hours have been an epic journey that I will never forget. Thank you Periphery!
WonderGhost i totally agree, i love periphery and everything they do but this is the only album that has really spoken to me on a musical and personal level
It's been many years since this album dropped, but you sir, nailed it with this comment.
P2 has done nothing but age even better. Truly a legendary album
R.I.P. to the greatest brother I've ever had Casey Crowder. You will forever be in my heart brother and I will miss you my friend.
This song is literally perfect.
More i listen to these guys the more i like them, easily one of my top 5.
I get that a lot haha.
Love music :)
*****
What else do you like?
*****
same, I like a wide range of pretty much everything, i guess thats why bands like periphery, which have elements of everything are my favorites.
*****
everything metal anyway. I dont care for pop or country haha
GetScaredGaming I agree, this song is fucked perfect. One of my absolute favorites :D
this song is so deep especially this when Spencer starts singing/screaming this part " Life is ruthless and shot full of pain,
It lifts you up, leaves you out in the rain, and it hurts just to know that you're not coming back again.
I will miss you my friend!
Memories like a slug to the brain, paint the walls that with a love that will stain the darkest of nights!
You left to join with the stars and I cannot shake this off my chest."
+godofwar0678 it´s called the chorus dude
I love the explanations of the songs! More band should do this, it's really awesome to read about the writing process of renowned bands. :)
Im gonna try to push my band Proliferation to do it when we finally finish a full length album! (Which will be the next thing we do) so yeah youre right more artists should do this thats why I want to contribute to it lol
Zyborggian Yeah, and cite the influences, I find all of that really interesting!
No kidding man. It is ridiculously powerful!
this ^
I don't think I've ever felt more feeling come from a song both lyrically and instrumentally than in this song. Truly amazing and inspiring. One of the best songs on the album in my opinion.
That harmonic before the solo works so well.
3:25 is what keeps bringing me back. I cannot hear this often enough. THAT FKN PROGRESSION
It starts as one festering feeling
The kind that cuts from the flesh down to the soul
No way to make amends for the time behind the door
Street lights feed lies straight to the mind of the wishful wanderer
How could he give up?
No second chances to say goodbye.
Wrapped in this cold, nostalgic energy from the cries of the ones who are
Buried
Ascend beyond.
Life is ruthless and shot full of pain.
It lifts you up, leaves you out in the rain,
And it hurts just to know that you're not coming back again.
I will miss you my friend
Memories like a slug to the brain
Paint the walls with a love that will stain the darkest of nights
You left to join the stars and I cannot shake this off my chest.
In death we grieve until all have transcended from this realm
In time we will meet again.
Suddenly I can feel the connection between dimension ties
Open gut on the floor. Trembling down to the core.
What is this?
It's been a long ride without you
I'm lost inside my own world.
There's not a single day where I've feigned the acceptance,
But it's a somber stroll down this road that we call life.
The silence still is crawling out of my sedated sight.
How can I be free?
Wrapped in this cold, nostalgic energy from the cries of the ones who are
Buried
Ascend beyond.
Life is ruthless and shot full of pain.
It lifts you up, leaves you out in the rain,
And it hurts just to know that you're not coming back again.
I will miss you my friend
Memories like a slug to the brain
Paint the walls with a love that will stain the darkest of nights
Left to journey alone, but I can find my way back home
Turning 31 this month, and listening to this amazing Periphery song while applying for a life insurance sales job. Who says growing up can't be fun?
Damn. 39 now?
@@nickkohlmann yes indeed!
@@dylangrieveable Time sure does fly. Wish you the best!
10 years ago My friend and I worked 3rd shift and he had this CD in his car for months and this was always my favorite, I'll always thinking of riding home at 4am when I hear it.
That's what they tend to do, stay in the cd player for months
Being a guitarist, I want to love periphery as much as I do for the guitarist. Mark, Misha, and Jake are great. Technically gifted but don't allow the technicality to overtake the musicality, which is key. However...What makes this band so amazing to me is Spencer. Such a vocally gifted man. What sold it for me was seeing them live. First time I've heard a vocalist sound so great live and on a record.
Keep it up Periphery :)
Always been one of my favorite songs ever I'll never forget listening to this on my 23 year old cousins funeral he died of a heroin overdose and it kills me every day but I get emotional as hell when I play this song brings back memories some good and some bad but ones I'll never forget
I salute to you dear friend.
Periphery II: This Time It's Emotional
:(
ded
nailed it
Actually made me laugh lol
Made me sadboi :( no other music will hit me like this did. Set and setting. Set and setting...
lo0l
Dat guitar tone, in the first minute i swear the guitar is alive and breathing. Fk me
The chorus gives me serious chills every time
3:25- 4:18 has to be one of the greatest moments in progressive metal history!
IT IS
agread
Hands down in my top five favorite periphery solos ever. that one particular hits me in the feels. I think Jake has the best solos but that's just my opinion
today, a twitch streamer by the name of puppers passed away.
he was well-known in the dead by daylight community as one of the friendliest, comfiest guys out there. he made no enemies, only friends. his amazing community was always growing, and he'd peak at a thousand viewers each stream.
and then in early 2020, he suffered a stroke. it turns out he had terminal ALS.
for the next 3 years, he suffered. he would regularly vent his frustrations and pain on twitter, which was just heartbreaking. he slowly lost the ability to do the things we all take for granted: walking, talking, moving, eating, drinking, and at the end of may 2023... breathing. he spent a short time on a ventilator, but he'd already fought his fight. he chose to be taken off the ventilator for his last days. he finally succumbed to his disease earlier today.
as someone who had been keeping an eye on his situation, it's devastating that the day we all dreaded finally came.
so why am i writing this? well, being an autistic person is very interesting when it comes to emotions. i often find myself unable to properly grieve as my brain responds weirdly to things like death and loss. yet, i find music like this, and it helps me ground myself. when i heard 3:46, i was finally able to shed the tears that i'd been bottling up.
thank you.
On top of being somber, this song is completely empowering. Its like one of those things that make you want to smile through tears. This song is absolutely amazing in every way.
This band has changed my life...and to think that half a year ago, I wasn't really a fan of these guys, mainly due to the fact scream vocals put me off a tad since I wasn't used to it, though I always did appreciate the musicianship of these djentlemen. Now they're my favourite band. Strange how things turn out, huh
I've noticed this is the case for a lot of people, myself included. It's an acquired taste!
+zamkowicz acquired is right...but now Im wondering HTF ppl can NOT like this radical mesh of vocal/scream. 1-2 punch if you ask me
Same thing happened to me, I used to despise this band, but they inspired me to change my life, and now I ended up with a tattoo of their lyrics, including their logo. Definitely interesting how things turn out!
Stranger things indeed...I'm sorry I just went there XD
+Jay Degraffenried Which lyrics did you get? :)
This is seriously one of the best song that this band have, or otherwise. Masterpiece!
I always come back to this song. Something about the guitar solo really lends to the tone of the lyrics. This song paints a good picture of what loss is like
My best friend showed me this song since years ago, he just have passed away today, rest in piece Sergio, I love you bro
Extremely personal song for Spencer. (You can hear him throwing his headphones on the ground at the end)
My favorite song from Periphery by far. Both musically and lyrically.
Is THAT what that is!?!?! I've always wondered >_
Haha holy crap thanks for clearing that up. But C'MON how could this NOT be a personal song for Spence, just listen to how he sings that fucking chorus! What a real, raw sound!
It's about one of his friend, who passed away :(
Sounds like someone dropped a bullet shell aha
Yeah, I don't think the mic will capture the headphone drop. More like an on purpose effect which in this case, a bullet drop. Maybe his friend joined the army, presumably.
This whole album is a soundtrack to my early teenager years. Thank you so much Periphery
PERIPHERY will hopefully be around for a very long time. Haven't seen them live yet but damn, I love every song.
Dude...you gotta see them live. Fucking INCREDIBLE!
His vocal range is insane! Not only that this band is very creative with their riffs and beats I cant get enough. Thank you for your efforts periphery, you are appreciated
That riff and the chorus together just Eargasm
i listen to this song not being i had someone close pass away but for a friend that i thought would be by my side for the rest of my life, we both shared a love for periphery and even went to see them in Manchester a few years ago, i will miss you my friend.
I knew from the beginning when I first heard that guitar riff this was going to be a great a song.
PercyJackson10 is it because you're psychic?? :P
These lyrics are so damn powerful and full of emotion. Spencer really brings this band together I believe.
Ahhhh... years ago I declared this one the best song I ever heard... I mean just listen the way that the rhythms enhance the melody and how the melody flows. I love the emotional weight and the way the song progresses it's very unique with the key changes after the first chorus it feels like the song is turning upside down and falling apart just to reassemble in the last possible second to take us to one of the greatest solos ever. It's like reading a novel when you finally hit the climax of the story and you be like "jesus what is going on!? this is GREAT!". It's taking me from the first to the last second and leaves me in awe even after so many times of listening. Absolutely inspiring stuff!
No matter who you are, you can't put as much passion into your voice as Spencer.
beauty. the melodies of vocals, guitar and drums perfectly combine to create the powerful atmosphere of this song. forever a favorite
9 plus years later and this song still gives me the chills, i love this album soo fucking much!
\m/ Periphery
I'm gonna actually see them on February 9th this year! So pumped!!!!!!!!
Lucky :3
I'm so excited!! :3
i would be :3
***** - I'll warn you now in case you don't know: Spencer is really that good live. Try not to jizz yourself... though I would totally understand if you did. It *is* pretty fantastic.
Thanks for letting me know ;) There's gonna be a one crazy-ass moshpit then :D
RIP to everyone who was lost in this life, and strength to carrying their names and memories with us. Thank you, Periphery, for helping us.
Man is that chorus good.

Wes is a beast! First time I've saw his name was with The Faceless. I was stoked! Now we have Alluvial.
What a masterpiece.
I'm glad I found this band.
For me the 2:15 part is still one of peripherys sickest riffs, holy shit...
Oh snap I literally just realized lol XD
My pants fly off everytime.
for me the sickest part was 0:00 to 5:31

R.i.p. Micheal Bradley Cochrane. 😭 My brother i will see you again..
Who dis?
@@ottonilsson3942 he's my older brother whom I dedicated this song too. He's the one that introduced me to periphery and he passed away October of 2019.
He'll always be with you 💜 stay strong and let his memory live in all that you do.
Much love!
Yessir you will see him again
This album is mind-blowing from beginning to end!!!
Ah remembering hearing this album for the first time when I was in highschool. The nostalgia is real.
They sound very much like a mixture of volumes and in fear and faith! I love it
wat :D
Clean vocals sound a lot like in fear and faith if you've ever heard them.
Lol not at all....
They really do.. Listen to imperial or INFAF self title album and cleans are similar. Uncleans sound very similar to volumes. It's a good thing. At least you like northlane.. Seeing them this Thursday actually
Love the descriptions on these videos!
These lyrics are beautiful, holy shit
This is the most emotional and touching metal song I've ever heard. Anyone who's lost a loved one can relate to the lyrics
3:51 marks the beginning of perhaps my favorite guitar solo
The riff preceding it is the highlight of the song for me... But Im just weird ;.;
WhaddupImJohn hell yeah dude, erised has my favorite of all time on it
The rhythm plays a huge part why that solo was so good too. It's insane how good that part is.
Marks* Mark Holcomb’s lol I had to
Thank Wes Hauch for that ;)
That chorus...it's just so damn addicting. I can't stop listening to it.
I miss you my best friend my brother... Wish I was able to pick you up from the street.... Always love you carnal... ❤🖤🤘
The snare ghost notes/fill at 3:36 gives me chills every single time. Simply amazing song.
Love the picking during the chorus by Jake, just adds another level of awesome to the song.
I love the vocals in this one... amazing.
Probably the best song on the album to me
Omg i love this band so much
:D fell in love with them instantly
Heard the original version idea for this song for first time on your soundclick(still my favorite) and hoped dearly that you would consider turning it into a full fledged song. Thank you for that Misha! Thank you..
This song is unbelievably good
and i thought i was the only one who got feels listening to this haha def one of my top fav songs
I wish Periphery III was this amazing
It’s still incredible
This song takes you on a journey. Best since 2014
I don't know if it's just a musician thing, but I absolutely love stories about the writing process and how songs come together over time. If you ask me, these kinds of series should be common practice for anyone who puts out a good album.
This is the only song to legitimately give me goosebumps, I love it.
reminiscent of long walks down a busy snowy ny highway to wash dishes ty guys for every moment
Kudos for the reply to that guy. Very well presented.
That guitar solo though man...
I'm alive because of your music. Thank you.
such voice many riff wow
This is my favorite song on the album. It has such a good vibe.
“It hurts just to know that you’re coming back again” RIP Alex I love you buddy
I'm just now getting into Periphery with this album, and I swear every single sound has blown me away.
Periphery, as a whole, is a work of art. Congratulations on the new album guys. I'm a big fan and please come to Evansville, Indiana.
Respect,
Misha's Personal Troll (Brett) lol
Def one of my favorite songs...this is perfect
This song reminds me so much of my best friend, who passed away just over two years ago. I still can't listen to it all the way through without crying.
why doesn't this have more views? I'm dissapointed:/ this is such an incredible song!
This is my personal favorite, it's just so meaningful and you can feel the emotion and passion in Spencer's voice. Well you can in just about every song on this album, but this one is just so powerful to me, I love songs like this.
Totally agree with Tiago. And on top of all the above.. I doubt if telling a person who probably won't even read this to ditch the singer who, in his opinion, compliments his music in the right way is the proper way to support him and his musical choices.
I love you Periphery, you seem like my bestfriend at times.
misha is love misha is life
Well mrak actually wrote this song lol
Brendon stacey Not really. Mark wrote the intro and the after-intro riff, not sure about the chorus, but the rest were Misha's. There's an old demo by Misha, try look it up :)
Well those two parts are the foundation for this song so its basically marks song with contributions from the rest of the band
In another perspective, it could be Mark wrote it to fulfill Misha's demo haha. But the shit is amazing anyhow.
King, Masterpiece, Fuking Brilliant.... Genius n Ingenious
Very Good Song, I Love It
What’s their not to love ? I’ve always listened to metal , all genres . Periphery is in their own genre to me . Spencer has a great voice and is a great song writer . It’s challenging to lay down vocals over music that is so complex . We’ve all lost loved ones so we all can relate . This is one of many of musical masterpieces they have Witten !
Spencer's voice is so powerful
this song makes me absolutely love spencer as a vocalist
One of my best friends commited suicide almost two years ago now, and every time I listen to this song, I cry. I know it must've been hard to record this song for Spencer, and I want to thank him for being so brave and putting something so personal out. Thank you.
Stunning song. Love this song
This.. just helps me overly much at the moment. I am glad that you wrote this song!
Really tempted to learn this on guitar. Such a beautiful song.
1:50 - 2:32 = Amazing guitar work, i love that little riff before the Spencer comes in, then he just makes it that much more boss with his amazing voice :3 then cue guitar solo. LOVE IT! you guys are amazing. enough said
