I did a video about WAO last week. Those KNetz went too far in mass reporting their Twitter account, just because they are not handsome to fit the beauty standards in K-Pop. I hope that those boys won't get affected by the undeserved hate they received.
I know I’ve seen so many idols receive hate but this was my breaking point, I was bullied and tormented because I didn’t meet my hometowns beauty standards and suffered for it. It took years for me to over come it I would never wish that on another person.
When i read about the reason why their Twitter Account was temporary closed, my First thought was literally: "wow we reached a new Level of stupidity" 😖😖
Why is it always about looks in kpop? Like netizens complain that some idols aren’t talented and their only talent is their looks but when a group is very talented they still get picked on because they aren’t attractive enough like what more do you want from them?
I always hate when people is not listening to good songs because the singer is "ugly"...i mean, thats like someone asks me where im going and i said im 20...
Honestly even if Trouble Maker was “controversial “ It was still one of the most Iconic Duos in Kpop! Unfortunately there won’t be any such groups in Kpop now:( And I mean the fact they were dating behind the scenes just makes it better I think I mean their sexy scenes seemed natural and they felt comfortable with each other , Not to mention their chemistry on Screen was just another level ! cause most of the times when idols try to pull of such concepts it rather looks Akward than sensual.
i think something that should have been mentioned but wasn't is the fact that hyuna was only 17 when she debuted as a soloist, meaning that not only was she underage, but that she was starring in a music video she herself wouldn't have been able to watch. i often think that netizens babying their idols and not allowing them to mature is ridiculous, but guess what: she was a minor, she wasn't supposed to be "mature", thus cube should have never put her in that situation to begin with. in that sense, people had all the right to be outraged, not at hyuna, but at cube.
I know this will probably NEVER happen, but we need another group like piggy dolls again. They were so talented and beautiful, and I loved their concept. I wanna see plus sized girl groups with powerful voices on stage again! As a plus sized girl myself, that would make me happy to see. Piggy dolls shouldn’t have had to lose weight to fit the beauty standards in Korea. They were beautiful just the way they were. Being plus sized doesn’t make you fat, and being fat doesn’t mean you aren’t beautiful. I hate the word fat, but it’s a term so many people use.. 🙄
The W.O.A One I was so shocked people could be so cruel it literally broke me to tears. As a victim and surviver of severe bullying for my appearance when I was young. Seeing this group get so much hate hurt me. I wish them all the best in the future and will support them endlessly I hope they can over come this and achieve success.
11:33 - this is actually a really good point. I personally have no issues with non-Koreans in kpop IF their home base is in South Korea and IF they speak Korean or are learning to speak the language (and obviously create their music using the language). You can't say you're kpop and not even run your operations from Korea....that should be common sense.
I just learned about Lana & have been weirdly fascinated by her. It's definitely an interesting issue - unlike Kaachi and EXP Edition, she did go through the training system and learn the Korean language. She also technically *is* Asian - she might be Caucasian but she was born in the easternmost part of Russia, near Japan. The main issues with her, I think, were that her debut song was poorly mixed (it's actually kind of a bop but god the mixing is awful) and that her live vocals were kind of weak - which could have been nerves, or it could've been that maybe she needed a little more training in that area, who knows. But obviously these things weren't really her fault - her company, while small, could have handled things a lot better. Maybe things might have also been better if she debuted in a group instead of solo. Anyway, I'm glad she seems to be doing well for herself in the Chinese market.
I would love to see a deep dive into Global Icon (GI). Their group was such a roller coaster. They had a unique concept, their company did their best to say that they were going to have a "global debut," but just uploaded their song to different digital platforms in different countries, then two members sued the company for mismanagement, the group went through line up changes, and completely re-did their image....it was a whole mess....
Its so funny to me that netz were hating on piggy doll for "promoting unhealthy habits" when we all know their faves starve themselves to keep their skinny bodies.
as a queer person, i'm not sure if you could say a real person is "queerbaiting", because while of course companies would do anything to appeal to a broader public, we're talking about real people here. we don't know if the artists in question are actually queer or not, especially in an environment so conservative like sk, so I don't think is fair to treat the self-expression of an artist/group at the same level of the writing of a fictional character, because again, they are real human beings.
Yeah, but assuming they are straight is just as bad, unless they come out. (Which would probably happen, never.) That they are queer or straight we don’t know. Like they are lgbtq idols, they exist.
Same, it’s very messy when you’re talking about real people. I’m more bothered by the fanservice aspect - if this is just to titillate a straight audience, I’m uncomfortable with that, then it really does make queerness a performance for the appeal of a straight person’s fetish
I remember when Piggy Dolls debuted. My first thought was, why did they have to give the girls that name? Is it because they're not skinny enough to fit the korean beauty standard? I then became happy to see that Korea might finally open up a bit towards different body shapes.. but boy was I wrong. Their story is really sad :/

I don't know about that. As a gay man the video made me a bit uncomfortable. It felt kinda "sexy gay men aimed at a female audience" tbh. Like it's sexy, which is fine. It never felt fetishy to me. But like... it did not feel authentically gay to me so I don't really consider it praise-worthy representation. There was some stuff there. But the video definitely felt aimed at women and not gay men. Same thing goes for the Red Velvet video. Weirdly the best kpop video i've seen with this concept is Chuu's Heart Attack. It just feels authentically sweet. Reminds me of having a crush in high school.

The thing is kpop is the biggest culture appropriation ever, I don't understand how Korean and international netizens can hate on american people or people that aren't Korean being in kpop when kpop isn't even it's own thing
The fact that netizens criticised Piggy Dolls for promoting an ‘unhealthy lifestyle’ is LAUGHABLE when you think about how they praise othrt idols for being super thin, dieting constantly, and restricting their food to the point of fainting on stage. They’re obsessed with unhealthy restrictive eating, but can’t stand someone with a bit of fat on them 🙄 It’s sad
The hate W.A.O got when those teasers came out was totally unjustified but sadly that's I how heard about them cause someone mentioned it on Twitter and so I checked out their debut and I loved it it gives me 2nd gen vibes which is nice. Also, I would like to see a deep dive video on Global Icon I'm very curious about their history
I'd be interested to hear more about how Lana has been treated. As someone who hopped on the hate bandwagon at the time, it was really eye opening when you mentioned that international fans expect to have such a large say in a genre that they think needs protecting from outside influences.
I love Lana, this girl is truly talented and hardworking ❤️ She's good at singing, she can rap, she's a great dancer and she actually knows Korean in addition to Russian and English, she even learnt Mandarin too for CHUANG and her promotions in China! Plus it's not hard to realize she's actually a very sweet girl, she's not acting like a koreaboo and always remained true to her Russian origins while being respectful towards the Korean culture. She really doesn't deserve the hate she got! ❤️
If Midnight Theory does make a video on Rania/Blackswan or a general video on DR Music, I hope they cover about how DR Music tried to sample a Tupac rap verse without having the rights cleared for Baby V.O.X's lead single for their last album, causing a scandal big enough to kill their cash cow. It completely reflects DR Music's shady behavior later on down the road with their artists they debuted after Baby V.O.X. (I might still be a bitter Baby Angel 17 years later after the said event.) I'm just happy that DR Music didn't try to market Blackswan as the fourth generation of Baby V.O.X.
Because wether or not she is matters to you, how? Sunmi like most successful entertainers is a smart, and makes money from your desperate need for validation.
Queerbait is something that happens a lot in literature, plays, media, etc. Sometimes they cant be direct because of lack of freedom or just art expression, other it is a tool to catch attention + the artist is flopping and needs desperate hype be it hate or support or just easy money. I dont blame the people that do it, I blame who is making money(idols dont gain that much anyway)
And? xD You have these "communities" endlesslesly speculating on which idols are and aren't. Theres a desperation for representation in every last drop of culture, why not make some coin from it?
@@SuperArea31 And? You wouldn’t understand if you weren’t apart of it, it’s not respectful to do something like that, it makes you a bad person, if you don’t care about other communities and only yourself and money.
I feel sorry for Lana because she is very talented, dances well, has a beautiful voice, knows English, Korean, Chinese and Russian, I love Lana and hope that she will return as a singer ❤️
with all these strict rules and standards and the high risk of being bashed by the public, i don't even know how so many idols had the guts to even debut, i'd be way too scared and lose all motivation
10:26 I kinda get why people have a problem with artists that are not Korean but (for example) English, Russian, so it doesn't fit the typical idol image. But it seems strange to me, why are they not allowed to be a solo artist? If a (for example) Japanese, Chinese or x people join an group then it's cool and ok but if they become a solo artist then it's suddenly horror and forbidden?? (Without joining a group -> they start their careers alone) I get that it that if you go too far (,but how can that happen?) that in a case you might call something Kpop which isn't. But how do you know what Kpop actually is? For me it's a person who writes song that have at least some lyrics in Korean and who can write a song in any other language but I think that it would become strange if you would call somebody a Korean Idol, when the only Korean thing was the one sentence in that one song. I myself think that it sounds weird but idk. Lol :D
I feel so bad for Lana. Everyone only talked about her race and never about anything positive. There are groups and artists that I don’t like, but I don’t go to there content and post hate comments. People need to get over themselves
- Trouble Maker? That song and choreography became iconic though.. it has been covered and parodied plenty of times on tv. - I remember watching another video about GI. What made me sad is that most of their "fans" basically abandoned them after they switch concepts and tried to stay true to their real selves, which as mentioned here, was girly. - Just like korean fans, international/non korean fans have their fair share of hypocrisy. I agree on that last comment about Lana, let the korean market decide if they want her or not. - Being fat and being on tv promotes unhealthy lifestyle? what kind of bullshit was that?!
i am trying to stan wao since some of them really stood out to me. i just have to say that the fact that antis sent malicious comments to them was alone not okay but suspending their Twitter account because they "don't have visuals" (which i can't see at all) is really not okay you guys are sick for that. also about piggy dolls that's also not okay at all. calling them "overweight" and that they're promoting an unhealthy lifestyle, sending malicious comments to them because of that. but when they lose some weight and people protest because they aren't overweight now? kpop industry has gotten sick. always remember to not send hate to someone who doesn't deserve it; after a minor inconvenience.
The Lana one pisses me off. I'm tired of international fans being privileged and being assholes for no reason and thinking they have a right and speak over actual Koreans and Koreans who live in South Korea. There is NOTHING wrong with people of ANY race being in K-Pop. As long as they have talent, went through the trainee system, speak Korean, and respect other artists and the culture, there is nothing wrong with it. And I'm Korean myself (I'm biracial). Lana can make good music. And as a singer, she is a good vocalist. And she went through the trainee system.
But making groups with lgbt "concepts" are the best way to change Koreans society, to change its way fo thinking, to start accepting lgbt people and accepting that there are idols who are from lgbt community
Honestly I think none of these idols deserved the backlash exept from the queerbaters. People shouldn't be criticised for looks in a music industry, people should be able to do the concepts they want and sexualising idols is gross on its own so like why not kiss on stage. I also think that K-pop should be able to include non Asian people, since K-pop literally only means Korean pop, pop in Korea, usually sang mostly in Korean. If you follow the training and learn how to speak the language I don't think there should be any problems with it.
The first comment about the queer-coding is really on point, coming out, be it in korea or in any part of the world, comes with the risk of being insulted, denigrated, sexualized and harassed, specially in the internet and specially by cishet people, sexual and gender identities are not a costume to put on when you want to get money from a minority that is desperate to get some representation of themselves, and will applaud anyone who give us some attention, even when it is only in a fetishizing way because we have no other way to see ourselves in the media, even if they are honest about it, it doesn't make it any better
Hello i’ve never been this early I just wanted to say thank you and that I truly enjoy the hard work and effort you put into your videos! Please have a good day!! Much love !
14:07 what exactly do netizens want anyway? honestly why cant idols live normal lives. Why can't they live as humans? or as actual idols and not objects?
1:50 That's legit unnecessary hate. I have always believed this and I'll say it with no hesitation this time, most k-netizens are hypocrites and always want something to hate on.
Dope new intro~ Piggy dolls arent a bad idea at all. I am only against the name...like piggy isnt a compliment, being overweight isnt unnatural, bad or ugly at all :(
I wouldn't say the hate non Asian idols face has lessened, just that it's always redirected anytime another non Asian person tries to pursue K-Pop. LANA faced hate for quite some time, then KAACHI debuted, and the haters decided to instead attack them instead. After them was BLACKSWAN's Fatou, and there's a chance that other members of the same group will become the next targets of the hate.
Oh wow, I was really not expecting to see the story of Piggy Dolls end like that....has there ever even been an entire group that had their whole lineup changed like that before?? That's nuts, but I guess they just wanted to reuse the concept, but it feels odd to throw in 3 new girls who are drastically smaller than the old members when they sang about body positivity. Idk why they thought that would go over well with the fans.
I don't get why people use Chuu's debut as queer baiting, since under the video the company says that it's a romantic relationship, but admiring in a chuu way
i also don't think it's queerbaiting (as a lesbian myself). it looked like a genuine romantic affection between two girls. plus, it wasn't sexual (which a lot of "queerbait" videos do)
Wait people really thought Monster was queerbaiting? Wasn't that just the concept? You know the monster being one with them and tempting them to become the monster by showing affection? (Seulgi and Irene were dressed and styled almost identical in the MV so I thought they were portraying each other's monster side)
@@acaterpillargivingbirth I don’t know about them being twins bestie...they were being very affectionate and twins don’t do that....unless they’re into incest which is disgusting
I hate the hypocrites criticizing piggy doll for "promoting unhealthy lifestyles" when your typical idor literally has to starve themselves, get phasic surgery and do training with almost no rest Idc what anyone says they are cute and I hope that they are doing well and don't let the haters get to them
It’s very annoying to watch a Kpop idol decide to “clap back” at the haters by releasing a half baked poorly executed rap diss track instead of just coming back with a better song with better dancing and vocals. I’m tired of non-black people using African American music as a way to portray negativity and aggression. I don’t care about Lana or her career but I hope she doesn’t leave her regular idol gig and start making more “rap” music because that clapback was forced and disingenuous.
it's funny looking back at people worrying about hyuna and hyunseung 'dating' now that hyuna and dawn are engaged after several years of publicly dating
But it is “trendy” and “cool” to be LGBT+ of some sort..It’s become a horrifying bandwagon and this is a great example of it. The only difference is KPop industries make money while people on Socials get likes, RTs, followers, subscribers, etc.
The QODES situation is a rough one, because the video for LALALA definitely falls more into sexualizing same sex female relationship, but we don't know how ok the women of the group were ok with using queerbaiting. The group seems to be talented, they even got to heavily influence the choreography among some other stuff according to a Instagram live they made, BUT their idea of "representation" was not very good, or helpful representation outside of some same sex people touching up on each other. Generally I find their other mv or as they call them "Quest" LIKE YOU, a much better depiction of a relationship between two women, be it platonic or romantic. They seem like a talented group of women so hopefully the LALALA discussion isn't the only thing they are remembered for, and leads to an end of their group.
Wow this was a Good Video, Midnight Theories I saw part 1 excited for part 3. Maybe in part 3 or another video you can examine Dreamcatcher and The Show- Alleged stolen Win controversy.
With onlyoneof their song libido isn't baiting anything. "Libido, which means sex drive or the desire for sex, varies dramatically from one person to the next. It also varies depending on a person's preferences and life circumstances. Libido can be affected by medical conditions, hormone levels, medications, lifestyle and relationship problems." It has nothing to do with being gay. They're showing a strong desire for sexual action. Also we have no idea if any of these people are gay, Lesbian, bi ect. If they actually were who are we to criticize them.
I think the queerbaiting conversation gets messy because these are 1) real living people who 2) aren’t allowed to disclose their personal lives. For me it’s more about fanservice - what is your intension with the performance, what audience are you trying to titillate? It’s the yaoi fangirl problem all over again.
oh my god G.I. thank you for mentioning them! They debuted only a few months before BTS and they had such similar styling lol what a shame members left and they didn't succeed
The hypocrisy of netizens saying piggy dolls promote an unhealthy lifestyle when Kpop idols have to starve themselves to stay skinny.
Ikrrr
They literally promoted that you dont have to be skinny to be beautiful- why are ppl like this
Also something so funny is that these people who say these mean comments probably have an unhealthy life style.
I swear to God those netizens are on crack

@@emsbanifufu2642 oooh I never knew that!
@@figcookies1389 I have :)
Let's not forget that Hyuna was barely legal when she debuted in Troublemaker and that her partner was almost a decade older than her -_-
I’m looking at WAO and trying to understand how they don’t fit Korean standards????? They’re all gorgeous???
If you do a part 3 you have to talk about Naked Girls. Also would love a deep dive for any of these group
I don’t think Tail is queerbating since Sunmi has said she likes girls too ?
Look yeah task is definitely not queerbaiting sunmi is either bi or just the ultimate ally
Shes never said she likes girls shes just shown her support for the LGBTQ community
sorry but when did sunmi said it? can you send me the link
@@theraefication she didn’t
Not me immediately thinking all the wao boys were cute 💀. Antis are weird
I'm so sad lana got hated for HER RACE although she is under a korean label and fluently speaks Korean. It's disgusting
GLOBAL ICONNNN YOOOO I USED TO LISTEN TO THEM SOOOO MUCH AS A KID
Tail (Sunmi) is not queerbaiting she is definitely an ally (also possibly closeted bi/les)
Because wether or not she is matters to you, how? Sunmi like most successful entertainers is a smart, and makes money from your desperate need for validation.
@@SuperArea31 Omg, shut up, and stop commenting everywhere, why you so salty bro.
@@chenmae9747 Why wouldn't I comment? This is an open discussion
Sunmi has said that she has romantic attraction to both men and women, there is queer and cannot queerbait
Piggy dolls's what is love still on my playlist, they have one of the best vocal on kpop history imo
Part three HAS to have LIPBUBBLE!!!!
can we talk about how hyuna couldn’t even watch her own debut video because it was 19+ and she was literally a minor at the time
Queerbait is something that happens a lot in literature, plays, media, etc.
Why is it like, a group showing LGBTQ+ relationships blamed so much, while kpop fans (even kfans) engage in writing same sex fanfics??
with all these strict rules and standards and the high risk of being bashed by the public, i don't even know how so many idols had the guts to even debut, i'd be way too scared and lose all motivation
(Without joining a group -> they start their careers alone)
I get that it that if you go too far (,but how can that happen?) that in a case you might call something Kpop which isn't.
People need to get over themselves
more people need to start breaking the whole “only asians can be kpop idols” mindset. 🕺🏿
Omgg you included "imitation" clips :D
I had not heard of Qodes or Global Icon before watching this video. Always nice to hear about something new!
the fact hyuna's vid was rated 19+ whilst she was 17..
And she went through the trainee system.
glad i made it in time
But making groups with lgbt "concepts" are the best way to change Koreans society, to change its way fo thinking, to start accepting lgbt people and accepting that there are idols who are from lgbt community
in lanas new song “it’s crazy” she did herself dirty there by saying the n word AND RELEASING IT thinking it was okay
I hope HYUNA wasn't forced to kiss or do this concept
The first comment about the queer-coding is really on point, coming out, be it in korea or in any part of the world, comes with the risk of being insulted, denigrated, sexualized and harassed, specially in the internet and specially by cishet people, sexual and gender identities are not a costume to put on when you want to get money from a minority that is desperate to get some representation of themselves, and will applaud anyone who give us some attention, even when it is only in a fetishizing way because we have no other way to see ourselves in the media, even if they are honest about it, it doesn't make it any better
Agreed
W.A.O aren’t even ugly… so toxic
I guess there was a reason why Troublemaker were called Troublemaker 🤣🤭 they caused a Lot controversy And... Well, Trouble xD
this is really interesting
Hello i’ve never been this early I just wanted to say thank you and that I truly enjoy the hard work and effort you put into your videos! Please have a good day!! Much love !
14:07 what exactly do netizens want anyway? honestly why cant idols live normal lives. Why can't they live as humans? or as actual idols and not objects?
1:50 That's legit unnecessary hate. I have always believed this and I'll say it with no hesitation this time, most k-netizens are hypocrites and always want something to hate on.
I hope WAO don't give up🔥FIGHTING❤️ Also no one deserves hate especially for their appearance 🔥
Min seo is now in JDR records...there are some songs she had there, and covers..shes amazing
Dope new intro~
Piggy dolls arent a bad idea at all. I am only against the name...like piggy isnt a compliment, being overweight isnt unnatural, bad or ugly at all :(
WAO isnt even ugly. im so confused???? the beauty standards are crazy man
probably the one that makes the least sense is WAO. they are lil cutie pies, very similar to any other boy group. I really don't get it.
Piggy dolls concept is so good
Yeees we got part2!
bro the WAO guys are so good looking wtf do they mean?
Original Piggy Dolls were sooo good!
global icon is just sad, they know they weren't portraying their real self but have to do it so they can debut
3:59 these people are so self interested, thats not why they are 'capitalising' on it, as though we are a 'fetish'... what a joke. so self centered
Trouble Maker was iconic, and OnlyOneOf are very comfy with their sexuality.
Kpop idols deserve justice
Lana has potential I think. She's really trying and I respect that.
W.A.O's debut is really good, its so sad that they got so much backlash when they are still goodlooking
I thought they were just really close twins ?
@@acaterpillargivingbirth Um, they looked like they are about to kiss, who’s kisses, there twins, it looked like a relationship
@@acaterpillargivingbirth I don’t know about them being twins bestie...they were being very affectionate and twins don’t do that....unless they’re into incest which is disgusting
I agree. They were playing around with the concept a bit but the main message was the monster taking over someone.
QODES are a group I STAN honestly and lalala is a BOP tbh
I hate the hypocrites criticizing piggy doll for "promoting unhealthy lifestyles" when your typical idor literally has to starve themselves, get phasic surgery and do training with almost no rest
Idc what anyone says they are cute and I hope that they are doing well and don't let the haters get to them
It’s very annoying to watch a Kpop idol decide to “clap back” at the haters by releasing a half baked poorly executed rap diss track instead of just coming back with a better song with better dancing and vocals.
Jeez, people can be so vile and judgemental.
But it is “trendy” and “cool” to be LGBT+ of some sort..It’s become a horrifying bandwagon and this is a great example of it. The only difference is KPop industries make money while people on Socials get likes, RTs, followers, subscribers, etc.
haven't seen a.c.e, they got backlash on their debut too
The QODES situation is a rough one, because the video for LALALA definitely falls more into sexualizing same sex female relationship, but we don't know how ok the women of the group were ok with using queerbaiting.
Bruh the boys of W.A.O are handsome even if they don't fit the "Standard" fcking standard anyway.🥺
I love tomboy look in kpop but it is still rare 😭😭😭😭
I think the queerbaiting conversation gets messy because these are 1) real living people who 2) aren’t allowed to disclose their personal lives. For me it’s more about fanservice - what is your intension with the performance, what audience are you trying to titillate? It’s the yaoi fangirl problem all over again.
oh my god G.I. thank you for mentioning them! They debuted only a few months before BTS and they had such similar styling lol what a shame members left and they didn't succeed
The WAO one? excuse me.. that's sad, the members are actually so cute.. what the fuck ;(
WAO are cute boys. Idk why they got hate.
honestly, if woa must be 'ugly', i guess a lot of people look like trolls :/
