Babies Don’t Belong in Boatyards | Sailing Soulianis - Ep. 101

  • We’re back to the boat!! This is our fourth season aboard - but this time, baby Renata is along for the ride!
    The boat needs some work before we splash, as usual. In the past, Kirk and I would live in the boatyard, sleeping in the van and working every minute we could. This time around we do things a little differently.
    Kirk reveals how he plans to fix the deck leak we've been chasing since we bought the boat, why the boatyard makes him feel territorial, and what it’s like to leave his daughter every day.
    Much love,
    Lauren, Kirk & Renata

    Awww this was one of my favourite episodes. You 2 are so chill, and clearly love parenting - it helps that Renata is perfect! Transitioning back to sailing is really different this time for you folks so thanks for being so transparent about all the challenges. I have always said you are a great team, totally understand your aggravation with all the stuff encroaching on your boat “property”. Let it go Kirk !!!!

      I think it's just a common courtesy to grant people and their things a bit of "social space", even in a storage situation. Especially if there aren't any delineators like painted lines or whatnot already there. Just assume a few feet of space on each side where the boat owner has right of storage and passage. Keep your stuff with your boat and if you need more room, ask the yard master to put your boat on the end where you can overflow into the nearby yard or field as needed. (or rent a larger slot!) But don't put your stuff under other people's boats and don't block people from accessing their boats.

    Really interested to see such a different experience of a boatyard. Not sure if it is a UK vs US thing or what.
    When our boys were young we spent all our holidays and lots of weekends for a year refitting an old Hirondelle cat, sleeping in a folding camper next to it.
    We have been working on our present boat refit for over 2 years but it is in a beautiful spot looking over the Menai Straits, we have great showers from our sailing club right next to the boat.
    Maybe it is a size/scale issue. Maybe a climate issue (while windy and often cold maybe this is less damaging). Maybe now it is an age thing. Maybe that we are working full-time so the boat work isn't our full life?
    We are grateful that we have an aft cabin so we can sleep where we are not doing dirty work.
    Anyway relieved that we don't live with that feeling that the boat is in toxic place, that must be hard.

    • @SailingSoulianis
      @SailingSoulianis  2 года назад +1

      That is interesting. This is an assumption because I have no experience with UK boatyards, but in the US it is pretty difficult to find a yard where you can do your own work while staying on your boat. The problem is that some people just get stuck living in the boatyard and never make it out. This is pretty undesirable from the boatyard's perspective, which is understandable, but it means that often times the yards that do allow this end up having a bit of a bad reputation and then get less investment as a result and it becomes a downward spiral.

  • @svechappe6075

    I think it's understood that the ground area directly under your boat in the yard belongs to you and others should not feel they can put their stuff there. I would consider that an intrusion, for sure. To that end, we also install a webcam on our boat when it is in long term storage so we can monitor it from wherever we are. As long as you have a secure place to mount the camera, a wi-fi signal and a 110 v power supply, it's an easy thing to do. On the emotions surrounding new parenthood and integrating a baby into your boating lifestyle, I think that develops and evolves over time and every couple figures out as they go what the proper balance is for them. There's no one-size-fits-all formula and you just rely on your instincts, trust your judgment and enjoy the ride. Spoken as ones who have just wrapped up 30 years of raising 3 daughters on boats and then seeing the last one off to the "real world" this past year. It sounds like it's a long way off, but the time actually flies by.

    • @SailingSoulianis
      @SailingSoulianis  2 года назад +1

      Every year we've talked about installing a web cam or security cam, and every year we've decided, it just wasn't worth the effort. Either the yards wifi is too unstable, or the power is too unstable, or whatever the reason, we just never got around to it. In the end I think our decision was justified, we haven't had anything happen, and I think knowing I could check in on the boat would mean that I would, and I'd just worry more than necessary. :) We're looking forward to seeing your boat on the water this summer, we're in your neck of the woods now!

    I vacuum bagged about everything in building a 30' cat - hull panels, deck, bulkheads.. etc - using a shop vac. A fairly cheap one, but not a small one. To keep it from getting too hot (burning out) I placed a piece of ABS pipe inline with the hose and drilled holes in it. To get the vacuum I would tape over the holes, then when vacuum pressure was where I wanted it, I would untape enough holes to keep the vac from getting too hot. I would leave it up to 8 hours running. Built the whole boat with it. I eventually got a Fein shop vac and that seems like it has cooling air.. gets pretty warm but not hot - plus if I'm worried about it, the hose has a slider that can open up the vacuum a bit. I'm skeptical you can get the balsa dry but I hope it works for you. Seems like it would take a fair bit of time.
