- When we first bought our sailboat, we didn't know anything about boat repair. Now, a few years and dozens of boat projects later, we've acquired quite a bit of experience. With similar projects popping up a second time we don’t feel so clueless anymore!
We've had one minor deck leak that has dogged us ever since we first surveyed the boat. Kirk thinks he’s finally armed with enough experience and the right supplies - penetrating epoxy - to put an end to the leak. He also pieces together his own DIY fuel polishing system to clean our dirty fuel tank.
After tying up these loose ends, it’s splash time. Yeehaw!

I made dad jokes before I was a dad, although I was terrible on the grill.
When attaching fittings to a cored deck it's best to overdrill the holes, fill with thickened epoxy, drill out to the bolt diameter, attach a backing pad or large washers, seal with butyl tape. Winches, cleats, etc. with big loads should have the core replaced with plywood. Hope boat baby living goes well!

Double dip here. Watching a couple out of B.C. Canada and they are on Vancouver Island getting a new sail from Precision Sails. Lo and behold one of the Precision Sail guys has a Sailing Soulianis t-shirt on. Post is about 7 months old because I started Breaking Waves channel from the start. I like to do that with a new vlog. Crazy beautiful sailing up there.

There was a time when the FRAM filters were considered to be the best, however in the case of their oil filters, they are consddered to be the worst filters on the market. I asume the fuel filters to be the same trash. At present Wicks a re considered to be the best. Love your channel, been with you since you bought the boat. Take care Gramps

Hey guys. I stop the video when you were talking about what to do with the rolling of the boat and where to put the baby. When we had our youngest one who was about the same age as yours is now and we had a 36 foot sailboat, we buffeted the sides of the hull in the V birth with pillows and laid our baby boy in a vertical line equal to the hull rather than sideways and he would just fall asleep and roll between the pillows in the V birth if you put her far enough in the V birth, she won't come off the end and you watch now and again to make sure you're comfortable but you'll see it you can you can let her stay there for hours. 😊✌️
an airplane builder named Rutan had a saying: T L A R ( that looks about right) ... when he stopped working on something.
I bought exactly the same pump with the same plan and have used it for both polishing (with a Racor copy from Amazon) and oil change. I did add some stainless tube so I could use it to vacuum the bottom of the tank (like your wire trick). I also used the pump to back flow the fuel pick up line as that was nearly blocked from years of abuse and being on the hard for a couple of years in Racine. if there is a screen on the pickup line backflowing it should clear it. I bought my boat in Oct2019 from Racine Riverside!
I've heard horror stories about screens on the pickup tube. Luckily ours did not have one!

Those meals are definitely fewer and farther between, but you're right I think we made a great tradeoff. we'd make the same decision again today :)

New trucks (diesel) have kits for relocating oil and fuel filters. Also, there are several kits available for older VW bugs. With some luck, you might find something that would work to relocate the filters to the same (hopefully easily-accessible) location.

The tool is an oscillating tool but we call ours Wilson..
What about the flexible water impeller? They say every 500 hrs, or sitting for a long time, it takes a SET, gets brittle. Get a few spares to keep on hand, check the rest of the hoses and clamps, might want spares of them too. Like your fuel polisher set up.
You can go to Ran Sailing and see the seat in the cockpit that they have for their baby
You may want to look and Knot Viking's set up for an infant on a boat roughly the same size as yours. As I recall, they did an episode on sailing with a baby onboard at the beginning of their vlog and had some interesting ideas that seemed to work out pretty well over time. Keep up the good work!

You should check out the baby seat that RAN Sailing have, it's mounted in the cockpit with an articulating arm. I could imagine the same seat with a mount inside as well as outside. Thanks for the videos. Babies Rule!
I tried looking for the episode where they installed the seat to no avail. They seem very nice and may be happy to share what they did and how it works for them.

your polishing set up is good. to change your oil, use 1/4 inch copper tubing down the dipstick hole and suck away and pump into an empty 4 qt oil container. Voila, c'est tout

FYI you could have used polyester resin, nice and thin and cheap so use lots! You could always top off with epoxy later if you wanted to.

Funny thing, if we had used polyester resin, its flash point is MUCH lower than epoxy, so we actually might have been at risk of starting a fire! With epoxy, we really were nowhere near that risk. One of the biggest reasons we used Total Boat's penetrating epoxy is that it has no VOCs -- thus no off-gassing -- which is necessary for it to cure in an enclosed space like the deck core.
You should not use polyester resin over epoxy, will not bond. Polyester is great for building but repairs should always be done with epoxy. Epoxy will bond to well cured and prepped poly.

Agreed, it is an indispensable tool. For cutting fiberglass I recommend the grout removal blades, they work great and last.
If you didn’t know you can get butyl tape at Menards it is back in the roofing section
Happy new year! A solution for your baby when underway might be to check Ran Sailing. They have a super seat in the cockpit for their little one to sit up while underway and is very secure at the same time. Hope this helps.

This was an excellent video all around. Your genius was showing out in those boat repairs. 😉. One thing I’ve seen from sailing videos, you have to be someone who does a lot of on the fly boat repairs. I don’t think I’d be as good as you are. 🙂 You guys should check out another sailing couple under “Sailing Delos” on RUclips. They’re raising their child from baby stage as well while sailing. Good luck and happy sailing guys. I’ll always be envious of your sailing adventures, but enjoying your videos.
I was in your shoes about 5 years ago. I never thought I'd have been able to get comfortable doing all the work I've done the last few years. But the good part is that once you get started down that path all your experience builds on itself and you'll find each successive project becomes easier and easier, even if you've never tackled something similar, all your prior experience adds up to a different way of thinking!

you could remote mount the oil filter and have both diesel and oil filters in an accessible spot. definitely doable.
kirk you should use a full sizes fuel filter
Put Renata in the fruit hammock, auto rocker ha ha.
Find a strong place to hang the car seat from , no mater what the angle of the boat , the car seat will remand level.
Total boat “ penetrating “ epoxy requires thinning. A lot of thinning. More useful as a coating. Smiths is a real cpes, no thinning required.

.... Yikes !! .... so what would you do if you thought the temp was too high and near to spontaneous combustion .... would imagine that where the temp was higher that there was a larger void that was filled .... brilliant product and great idea following it with the temp gun .... guess you will have a few spots to secure Renata's car seat, interested to see how you handle this ... Is Renata always as relaxed as you show her on the boat .... no mention of the possibility of a different boat this time around .... seeing you in the warmth is very welcome we are coming out of a week where the highs were around -17C to -20C. Thankfully the high today is above -10C .... thx for sharing ... and as always .. never stop dreaming, just dream bigger .. have fun be safe, save our oceans ....
Great question. Stand at the ready with buckets of water? Throw our hands up, scream and run in circles?! Probably at least grab the fire extinguisher. Not sure! Just glad we really weren't close to that risk, probably needed to be a few hundred degrees hotter, at least.
Ha no, Renata is not always that relaxed. In fact, if she's not being held by one of us, she's often demanding we remedy the situation.

If your going to do fuel polishing to need 4 big Racor filters set up online with a water seperstor, filters being 20 micron, 10 micron, 5 micron, 2 micron. Change out each fliter as it gets blocked.
That's what I thought, and it's ultimately what turned me away from attempting this early on. That's a great setup, but it's $$$ and would have been way overkill for our needs. Mr. Beke is a marine-ized tractor engine. He's a rough and tumble guy. Going all the way down to 2 micron would honestly be a waste of filter media. We only ever used a 20 or 30 micron filter on the engine itself. Our cheapy little filter was fine enough to gather up all the sludge, and that was all we really needed. You may have a different experience with newer more finicky engines, but it's hard to stop the Beke. :)
